Report: Condoleezza Rice Near the Top of Romney’s VP Short List

Drudge Report: Condoleezza Rice Near the Top of Romneys VP List

As speculation continues to swirl around Mitt Romney’s pick for VP, Drudge is reporting former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is among the “handful” of remaining candidates.

Romney is expected to officially name is running mate in the “coming weeks,” according to his campaign.

More from the Drudge exclusive:

And a surprise name is now near the top of the list: Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice!

It was Condi who received two standing ovations at Romney’s Utah retreat a few weeks ago, and everyone left with her name on their lips.

Rice made an extended argument for American leadership in the world.

In recent days, she emailed supporters:

“2012 is perhaps a turning point for the United States.”

“The upcoming elections loom as one of the most important in my lifetime,” she warned. “I’m very often asked to speak about our current foreign policy and challenges that lie before us. However, we as a country, are not going to be able to address any of those international challenges unless we first get our domestic house in order.”

Almost immediately after Drudge put the story up, the conservative world started reacting. Many are questioning whether or not Rice is seriously being considered for VP or if this is just a ploy by team Romney.

Robert Costa, a political reporter for the National Review, tweeted that a “top Romney source” told him “no Condi”:

Drudge Report: Condoleezza Rice Near the Top of Romneys VP List

RedState Editor-in-Chief Erick Erickson stopped just short of using an expletive to express his doubts about the Condi announcement:

I don’t know who is hitting the crack rock tonight in the rumor mill, but bull shiitake mushrooms.

Condelizza Rice is pro-abortion.

She worked for George Bush for eight years.

In those eight years at National Security and then at State, our relations with Russia deteriorated though she was an expert in that field. Central and South America went to pot as well, the ramifications of which still have not been sorted out. She was one of George Bush’s most trusted advisors and her supporters would have you believe that everything bad that happened, happened because of Cheney and Rumsfeld.

The problem is that this ignores the Americas and Russia, areas where State played a big role.

The Blaze’s S.E. Cupp was also skeptical and shortly after the story broke, she tweeted:

Drudge Report: Condoleezza Rice Near the Top of Romneys VP List

Further casting doubt on the report is a previous interview in which Rice said she would definitely not be Romney’s running mate, the Hill reports.

“It’s not going to happen — and no,“ Rice told ”CBS This Morning” host Charlie Rose on Tuesday.

She said Romney has a “deep bench” of candidates who would be happy to be his VP but added, “it’s really not me.”

There‘s no doubt intense speculation will continue to run wild concerning Romney’s running mate until the presidential candidate finally decides to put it to bed by naming his pick.

This is a breaking story and updates will be added.

Waiting till after the Olympics would be good. We need to fix the American Economy and Paul Ryan would be best to help with that. Is Romney far enough ahead to pick per ability rather than gaining a segment of the vote? However, Condi Rice or Marco Rubio would also be excellent!

We need to force Romney’s hand. Loudly and vocally reject these stupid ideas and campaign for actual conservative like Rand Paul or maybe some body who can articulate what and who we are fighting like Allen West.

Romney at this probably is dumb/progressive enough to pick McCain or Bush. Our country might be lost. I’m almost tears. Why do we have to elect fools? I don’t want my country to fail.

How is this a choice? Marxist Obama or huge progressive Romney who is liking the most liberal V.P picks (Christie, Condi etc).

I can see how people are considering voting third party and writing in names. What the hell is wrong with these people! Or should I say us.

Newt & Romney were the two most progressive candidates. Even close to being full marxist themselves these were the last two running(other than Ron Paul)? What is wrong with this country? Please wake up and force these peoples hands!

The issue is the size of government, healthcare, spending, the economy, jobs, trade, education and our convoluted tax system. Fix those and you’ll have your reduction in abortions. Romney cares about votes more than anything else. He is a pure politician. He was like a rabid pitbull against true conservatives in the primaries. He is Mr. moderate nice guy against Obama. He is looking for the biggest possible reach for votes he can get. Since he feels most conservatives will back him no matter what now. He is trying to play the first true black/woman card. A brilliant chess move for a true politician. Unfortunately Romney is nothing more than Plastic Man! No one knows what the heck he is going to do if he does become potus. Looking at his past it’s not a bright future for conservatism. After following politics very closely for over 12 years (including seeing this snake Romney in 2000) I can say with certainty this country will never be what it use to be, ever. You can’t blame the idiots who support this guy. They work fulltime, and just don’t have the time to find out who Romney truly is. Romney or Obama, it doesn’t matter. This country is over. Sad indeed.

I like Rand, but he’s green, plus he needs to distance himself from the dreams from HIS father. So who’s left? Rubio or Ryan. I like them both, but I get the distinct impression that Rubio doesn’t want to risk his political career at this point. Marco Rubio would be the best choice……by far.

A black woman can do nothing to attract voters, since blacks aren’t going to vote for Romney no matter who he chooses. And those who like will votefor Romney anyway, so what’s the advantage?

I think the Republican management are shooting themselves in the foot…..AGAIN.

While Rubio won’t attract West Coast Hispanics who will ALWAYS vote Democrat, he’s the most capable and intelligent person available, and he could at least help in the Florida vote.

Pat Buchanan, in his rush to put a black lady on the ticket, screwed up big time. She was virtually unknown, and the entire party supporters consisted mostly of whites who wanted change.

Putting Rice on the ticket will be just one more Republican loss, and the out-of-touch foolswill wonderwhy.

These advisors who advised McCain are probably behind this. If it wasn’t for them, McCain MIGHT have won in 2008.

That’s correct. She was very clear about wishing to leave the active political arena.

That said, she would be an excellent choice. She has had an enourmous amount of hands-on experience in the international arena. Her credentials in foreign affairs are first class, and one only has to look in her eyes while she is speaking to see the towering intellect behind them.

Forget the fact that she is black and female. What America needs right now is someone to fix some very serious, nation-threatening problems. Only the best person for the job should be acceptable.

It might be said that she quit politics because she was worn out after eight years of non-stop slog which included a couple of wars (and some contrary allies and other actors which was her perticular problem) and, having rested, she might now reconsider her position.

It’s an attractive idea, but I doubt it.

Thats fine. But i dont get why someone like you would make a broad generalization about me basically saying the only reason i dont like her is because she ‘isnt a paul’. My original post was legit and I was looking for answers – and your response was out of context and misinformed. If you take offense to describing that as “ignorant”, then maybe “close minded” will work better.

That seems to be the way it goes around here….I post a question (or a series of questions) regarding a politician’s record without mentioning Ron Paul, and the responses are shallow and full of anti-paul. I wish Glenn read the posts on this website – he would realize there is A LOT of work to be done intellectually

While my first choice is either Rand Paul followed by Allen West, excuse me for getting a little bit more excited with Condi versus the names I have heard in the past few weeks, i.e. Pawlenty, Portman, etc. However, it would be a tricky thing to name the Rand VP, son of someone who still thinks he is in this race. Maybe if Ron Paul were to step down off of his high horse, we could get Rand Paul. That would sure make it less “awkward”.

And btw, why do people on these blogs think people who don’t agree with them are ignorant. That, in itself, is ignorance and kind of makes you look like a *****.

SOY, you sure do like to talk down to people alot and talk about “intellect”…You are NOT smarter than me, although I’m sure glad you seem to think you are. If the ONLY thing you are looking at is fiscal policy (and I AGREE that is the most important thing right now) then Condi doesnt have much of a resume. She is, however, absolutely brilliant and was an amazing SoS…she isn’t my first or second choice, I was commenting on the fact that you simply went to bashing her and acting like she had NO qualifications for VP…she definitely is more qualitifed than at least the last 5 VPs this nation has had. I just think that those that follow the RP cult to the letter seem to be more hostile towards fellow conservatives than maybe they should be…the way you continue to talk to me is case in point

The second paragraph of my last post was about the way things go around this website and not directed at you – you’re being too sensitive. This website is a place where people can talk about issues and things that matter. It is not for ‘victims’ and emotions. There was no “bashing” other than the obvious observation that George Bush trampled the Constitution and she, as SOS, was complicit in it.

The fact remains that I asked some simple questions about things that matter to the fabric of this nation, and instead of answers, you gave me Ron Paul generalizations. Like I said, this is what typically happens on this website. It is truly a shame, because if you listen to Glenn Beck, he is calling us to a higher understanding of issues – but his own followers cant get past the “R” after politician’s names.

@justangry You are right. I alway knew that Romney was a progressive but hope he would surround himself with conservatives & tea like folks to get elected and at least try to look conservative. He act even act the part!

Why did these fools elect him? I hope that we could win this election with this maybe small progressive hide as a conservative posing as as fake-tea party and then he try to act the part so we can survive until the next election. When so we can make some history and boot his progressive butt out in 2014.

He isn’t even trying to act the part. Romney seems to be a progressive to core if pick one of these moronic V.P choices. I pray he changes his message and picks Rand Paul as his V.P! If not I’m afraid we are doomed.

I had no part in picking of these foolish progressive candidates. I actively campaigned against for the most conservative candidates.

its a movement and its not about the destruction of a party its about the destruction of the two party system, there will be a point where things get bad enough for other parties or candidates to take over, when support dies and elections are not rigged. Paul is just one of the message spreaders we have many others that will as well. the overall goal is to destroy progressivism and replace it with either nationalism or libertarianism. Its a process that takes a while, but as things get worse the easier it will get to accomplish this.

It seems to me that most of us are here to wake up the sheep and show them that establishment progressive republican party will not restore our Constitution and the Republic. We can only restore these things if we purge the progressives and replace them with small government Constitutionalists.

How do we get there? The only option is to remove our support from progressive republican candidates. I dont know how this is going to work in November 2012 but i can tell you that if the republican party sees milliions of people voting for Gary Johnson and Virgil Goode – they will see what kind of changes need to be made. There is no other way to make significant change….anything else will take decades – and we dont have decades

Just because we disagree with you doesnt mean we are evil. That is a simplistic way to look at the world. You have been blessed with education and all the information of the internet at your fingertips – there is no reason to be in the dark about our motives

      SOY:
I respect your points. If we compiled a list of candidates at all levels there would be much commonality. Reality is there are a handful of passionate folks here that would like to see smaller gov’t, less politics, better mgmt of our trust and resources. Romney may have some similar traits as POTUS, agreed.

Romney would not: have raped the auto bond holders, met with MBH or Mursi, ignored doma, sued Az., shut down cleaning of voter rolls, advertise in Spanish to get trespassers on food stamps etc.

He would support domestic energy, fair trade (monetary), work with Ryans’ budget. Most importantly, (since I don’t view him as an activist), I think he would work toward whatever bottom up pressures tells him. Conservatives in the House, Senate and very much the Governors CAN guide this guy.

Personally I’ve become active in pushing the 10th Amendment and calling for time outs on a number of issues and Walker et al in Wisc is a case study. It needs duplication and Romney will respond in my opinion.

In the end your fight is not my fight as you are looking to take votes, for whatever principled reason. Personally I don’t think it will matter if POTUS is re-elected. As far as votes go you are qualified as a vote for POTUS. I don’t view it as evil, just wrong but within your rights.

RE: C. Rice-maybe not the best choice, but she would have my vote. I feel this election could turn this mess around with a few MORE conservative wins.

      @Inlightofthings
Everyone has to draw a line in the sand for what they would consider to be an acceptable republican alternative to Obama. Some people say anybody with an “R” after the name, some people say anybody who wont make it worse, etc etc. I draw the line at someone who has the guts to make significant cuts to federal programs and return the power to the States. I could vote for a Rand Paul or a Michelle Bachmann – that is the lowest i can compromise given the times we are in.
You draw the line at a different place because Obama is so bad – i get that.

My perspective is beyond this election. Look, the republican establishment is progressive – i dont think there is any doubt about that. They preferred Romney the whole way. If Romney wins the election, the establishment will become more entrenched and less likely to nominate constitutional candidates in the future. So getting rid of Obama is good in the short term but there are long-term consequences. If Romney wins, we dont have another chance until 2020 – that scares me

Yea i know what it means to have Obama as second term. But if Romney loses, the republicans will become even more principled in Congress. Next time, the establishment may let a constitution guy through. Again, minus and pluses.

So you can see why neither result thrills me. That is why I am going to vote principle in 2012. If Obama gets >50% in my state, then it doesnt matter who i vote for anyways. Might as well make it c

Heard Beck interviewing Rand this am…I do like the guy and think he would be a great pick also. Said the main thing to win the allegiance of his Dad’s base is to support a bill sponsored to audit the Fed. Sounds simple enough. I can’t remember the name of the Bill…

Rand Paul far by the better option. Even Allen West would be better. We need to pull our head out of our ass! What the hell are you thinking?

She is a very bright woman, very well accomplished… but I fear that she is an uber Progressive.

Romney, be mindful of your selection.

I lost all respect for Cupp when she said that. She comes across as rather brain-dead on her FOX appearances anyway.

I like the Rice possibility, if it comes to be true. I’d prefer Rubio, but this would be one heck of a strategic choice. A successful manager coupled with an experienced past Sec of State (one who hasn’t been running around the globe cutting personal financial deals).

Woo Hoo. I hope it’s true!

With due respect to SE Cupp, Mrs. Romney said a woman was being “considered”. The response from SE said she was lying. If anything Ms. Cupp should address the Drudge report directly and not the campaign. If Drudge is correct then the apology should be forthcoming based on the the topic not being about the actual selection, but the consideration. SE is lying down with dogs and has a few fleas…not too late to shake ‘em now and get off MSNBC.
