Report: Ex-General Will Run for TX Senate Seat…as a Democrat

Report: Ex General Will Run for TX Senate Seat...as a DemocratYou may not remember retired Gen. Ricardo Sanchez, but you will probably be hearing his name a lot very soon. That’s because Sanchez, who was forced out as the top commander in Iraq, is reportedly going to be running for U.S. Senate in TX. But he’s not going to be running as a conservative, as some might think. Instead, the man once disgraced by the Abu Ghraib scandal has been recruited to run as a Democrat.

The news has reportedly been confirmed by former Texas Lt. Gov. Ben Barnes, the McClatchy Newspapers reports:

Former Texas Lt. Gov. Ben Barnes confirmed that Washington Sen. Patty Murray, the head of the Democratic Senate campaign committee, was referring to Sanchez Thursday when she said that Democrats were very close to announcing a candidate in Texas.

Sanchez, reached by phone at his San Antonio home, said, “I can neither confirm nor deny.”

What Sanchez was willing to talk about was his political views — views that include the key word “progressive:”

“I would describe myself as during my military career as supporting the president and the Constitution,” Sanchez said. “After the military, I decided that socially, I’m a progressive, a fiscal conservative and a strong supporter, obviously, of national defense.”

Sanchez, a Rio Grande City, Texas, native, said that he was shaped by his upbringing.

“It’s my views and my history, having grown up in south Texas, depending on social programs and assistance, that America has a responsibility to its people,” he said.

Considering the strong — and growing — Latino population in Texas, some think Sanchez has a good chance in the historically red state.

“I think he will be a very viable candidate,” Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) said. “He’s got the background. Texas is about ripe to start shifting into the blue area.”

But the Republican Party isn’t convinced, and issued a challenge.

“Republicans can only hope that national Democrats are going to waste their money in the state of Texas,” National Republican Senatorial Committee spokesman Brian Walsh said, “We look forward to their mystery candidate.”

High ranking retired Military officers have spent over 20 years reared and nurtured in an admitedly essential organization but that by definition is as socialistic as it gets. It has to be to be to perform its CIVILIAN entrusted and directed mission.
Ex USA high rankling career military people, while generally disciplined , focused, mostly honest, socially conservative are by training and habit, economic morons. They all bow and scrape at the altar of government largesse and their favorite psalm is ” spend it all or you won’t get more next year..
They are by training and nature, economic progressives, with little or no sense of economic cause and effect.
They have also been trained to be social servants, regardless of rank and will always do the bidding of their “superiors” Be very careful putting them in elective office .
Please make note that I am referring very specifically to career , high ranking ( 0-6 and above) or “senior management”, who by rank and priviledge rarely qualify to represent “we the people”

The US Military is probably the only truly Socialist society that works, but is also notoriously expensive and wasteful. They just don’t focus on accountability when it comes to buying and conserving things not directly affecting a mission.
A commander’s skills are many, however; knowing how to stave off an aggressor, and knowing the art of war can come in very useful; especially if the ex-military congresspersons are independent of the military industrial political complex.

I wouldn’t trust any former high ranking military officer that runs as a Democrat. During my time in the service the Democrats did nothing but screw the military personnel. Peanut Brain Carter is a very good example.

From a military point of view, you can support the POTUS and the constitution. The POTUS is your boss, according to the constitution (I think that’s the way it works).

Instead of a blue dog democrat, might he be considered a DINO (Democrat In Name Only). Maybe a little subversion on the GOP’s behalf?

Like you say here, it might well be true that the Military are not fit to represent us in congress. A good example would be Representative West, a career military man with tons of opinions. Years from now, his storied political career will prove or disprove this argument. I happen to think a general Officer will make a fine representative or Senator, especially if they are a skilled paper pushing bureaucrat.

Good grief… Sanchez’s career spanned many presidents. He is referring to the office, generally, not the current president, and in fact he retired in 2006, before Obama took office. Moreover, the Constitution stipulates that the President serves as commander in chief. Sanchez has a good bit of baggage from his military career, but honoring his pledge to protect the Constitution isn’t in the negative column.

Interesting! Two weeks ago many of the people in here were criticizing Jim Moran for saying that a retired combat soldier was not as experienced as a former mayor in serving constituents, citing the “public service” of being in the military. So which is it? Does the simple detail of a military career make one a “magic politician” or not? Do you mean to say that it requires specific skills and expertise?

      TeacherMitch;

I was responding to the other comment, but seem to have struck a nerve with you. Of course your opinion that serving as a democrat is “dishonorable service” needs to go unchallenged, and there is “no way” our all volunteer forces could reflect the political demographics of American society, and contain independents (46%) and democrats (24%).

It is unfortunate that so little is actually known about our military, and so few people spend any quality time with the military. God Bless the new initiative to recognize military families and actually help veterans get jobs!

It is not a very difficult paradigm if you love your country and know how to be a military person. When it was my oath in question, I clearly understood the chain of command as bounded by the US Constitution, and faithfully carried out the orders of my command, which never approached a constitutional question or legal ethical dilemma for me; but certainly did for LT Calley and some others.

The professional US Armed Forces do not have the luxury of judging the duly elected president. Obviously; 99% of military persons do not receive orders from “the President” and posers who say they would not follow the Commander In Chief are probably not fit to serve.

      ————
It’s never enough for the “progressives”. They cannot tell you what their exact “formula” is, specifically how much money they need and what % of GDP is enough for them. Their answer is always some “feel good” nonsense like “it’s enough when everybody is taken care of”. They always want more and more of our money. Take, take, take… that’s their M.O.

People had better wake up because they always START with the rhetoric of class warfare and “tax the rich”. But then they need more and more and start to come after everybody’s resources. It’s always just a matter of time with these frauds. They are liars who will not tell you exactly what their end-game is. They need to lie to people to get their votes. They need to lie about their opponents. They lie and lie and lie. It’s what they do best.

Another general (like Colin Powell) who played some acting role in order to rise through the ranks and become successful. Once out of the military, they become political hacks. Washington is filled with political hacks and that is a main reason for out country being in such deep trouble. You can’t just throw money at a social problem and expect it to work magic and solve the issue. Education is a perfect example. Since the 1960s, trillions of dollars have been spent on it, good public school systems have been destroyed, and the students today are performing at lower levels than ever.
