NPR Reports FBI Investigating more than 100 Suspected Islamic Extremists Within Military

More than 100 investigations into suspected Islamic extremists within the military have been carried out by the FBI, including 12 cases considered serious, NPR is reporting.  Investigators believe the main target to be military bases. NPR reports:

Officials define that [a serious case] as a case requiring a formal investigation to gather information against suspects who appear to have demonstrated a strong intent to attack military targets. This is the first time the figures have been publicly disclosed.

The FBI and Department of Defense call these cases “insider threats.” They include not just active and reserve military personnel but also individuals who have access to military facilities such as contractors and close family members with dependent ID cards.

Officials would not provide details about the cases and the FBI would not confirm the numbers, but they did say that cases seen as serious could include, among others things, suspects who seem to be planning an attack or were in touch with “dangerous individuals” who were goading them to attack.

The investigation was discussed at a closed hearing on Capitol Hill in December. Though the FBI and Defense Department would not disclose details, Sen. Joseph Lieberman spoke to the radio network:

“I was surprised and struck by the numbers; they were larger than I expected,” Sen. Joseph Lieberman, an independent from Connecticut and chairman of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security, told NPR. He stopped short of confirming the numbers.

“I know one can say that as a percentage of the millions of people in active military service or working with contractors, the numbers you talk about are a small percentage of the total, but the reality is it only took one man, Nidal Hasan, to kill 13 people at Fort Hood and injure a lot more,” Lieberman said.

In 2009, Nidal Hasan, a military psychiatrist and a U.S. Army major went on a shooting spree at Fort Hood in Texas, killing 13. He presently faces charges of premeditated murder.

In December, the Pentagon was criticized by lawmakers for classifying the massacre as “workplace violence.” Republican Sen. Susan Collins then suggested political correctness was taking precedence over security concerns and blasted the Obama administration for not calling it a threat from radical Islam.

Prosecutors say Hasan, an American Muslim of Palestinian descent, had communicated with the U.S.-born al-Qaeda cleric Anwar al-Awlaki before the shooting. Awlaki was killed in a U.S. drone attack in Yemen last September. If he is convicted at his scheduled August court-martial, he could face the death penalty. Earlier this month, The Blaze reported Hasan’s pre-trial hearing was delayed over his beard, which was in violation of the Army’s grooming standards.

NPR provides more detail on the categories into which the FBI is dividing its current 100 investigations:

The FBI typically divides investigations into three categories: assessment, preliminary investigations, and then full investigations in which agents have enough evidence to justify using all the investigative tools at their disposal. As of last December, there were a dozen cases in that last category.

“This number speaks not only to the reality that there is a problem of violent Islamic extremists in the military, but also that the Department of Defense and the FBI since the Nidal Hassan case are working much more closely together,” said Lieberman.
Officials stressed that the FBI and the Department of Defense track all kinds of extremism within the military community from white supremacists to neo-Nazis, not just Islamic extremists.

But the Fort Hood shooting inspired new reporting procedures aimed at catching plots before they unfold. Since 2001, law enforcement officials have foiled and prosecuted more than 30 plots or attacks against military targets within the United States.

Fox News detailed previous threats to domestic military bases:

In June [2011], two men allegedly plotted to attack a Seattle, Wash., military installation using guns and grenades. In July, Army Pvt. Naser Abdo was accused of planning a second attack on Fort Hood. And in November, New York police arrested Jose Pimentel, who alleged sought to kill service members returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Both Pimentel and Abdo also allegedly drew inspiration from al-Awlaki and the online jihadist magazine Inspire, which includes a spread on how to “Make a Bomb in the Kitchen of Your Mom.”

In December, New York Republican Rep. Peter King, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, suggested to Fox that “enlisted jihadists” pose a double-threat:

“There is a serious threat within the military from people who have enlisted who are radical jihadists,” King said. “The Defense Department is very concerned about them. They feel they‘re a threat to the military both for what they can do within the military itself and also because of the weapons skills they acquire while they’re in the military.”

King believes military personnel are considered by terrorists to be a uniquely valuable target, since they are “symbols of America’s power, symbols of America’s might…And if they (military personnel) can be killed, then that is a great propaganda victory for al Qaeda,” he said.

      @SOYBOMB A friend blogger from the Blaze sent me a news article a year or so ago that stated that Obama had issued an executive order that stated that illegals could get amnesty by either joining the military or going to college.. This was never reported on the Blaze or other MS news media… Do you rememeber the uproar that students were exhibiting for having to pay for their own college plus that of an illegal? Californians received the greatest attention for being angry.

Nidal Hasan had been ‘under investigation’ for years BEFORE he slaughtered 13 soldiers plus an unborn child at Fort Hood Texas and the FBI already knew Hasan was a muslim terrorist who just hadn’t acted yet and they did NOTHING to stop him, I knew it then.
      When American soldiers had been killed by Asan Akbar another american muslim infiltrator with a granade in 2003, I just naturally assumed no more muslims would be allowed military access, which is what should have happened, but that was not the case.
      This President and his administration have let it be known that muslims are protected under his rule. He said, ‘We are not now or will be ever be, at war with Islam.”
      He has mentioned the ‘Holy Quran’ many times. He has bowed to muslim leaders. He has welcomed muslim terrorists into OUR Whitehouse. He, on tape talked about ‘My muslim religion’.
      I could go on and on. We all know the score.
      It is crystal clear this president hates everything about America in it‘s present state and he aims to ’change’ it into something unrecognizable. He is working feverishly to destroy all that we as Americans know.

      Does the name Timothy McVeigh ring a bell? He was military trained and a terrorist.
      I was pointing out that The Blaze likes to report stories that paint Muslims and anyone associated them them as evil people. 100+ Muslims causes a fervor, and I mention that thousands of soldiers are in hate groups and I’m somehow a bad person and possibly an extremist myself (thanks Florida123).

      Should I even bother to bring up the 20,000 violent sexual assaults that happened in the military last year?

      I‘ll be the first to admit that I don’t want extremists of any sort in our military, but when sites like The Blaze only focus on groups like Muslims, it’s in a way, irresponsible. It does nothing more than to stoke the flames of hatred and intolerance. To read the comments on most of the stories on here is usually quite disgusting. They are filled with bigoted, racist, sexist, homophobic and violent tendencies. It’s rather ironic that so many on here complain about the way society is going while doing nothing more than to help it along the path of destruction.

      When I do comment on a topic here I try (and sometimes fail) to bring civility and reason with my argument.

      The DoD claims there were 3200 violent sexual assaults reported last year. Where did you get your stats?

      @PPM the 3,200 is the number that were reported. As with sexual assault in civilian life it goes largely unreported.

      The 3,192 reported incidents were just 34 more than the previous year, a 1 percent increase. But so many sexual assaults go unreported that Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta estimated earlier this year that the total number is closer to 19,000.

      That problem HAS been brought to the attention of the military, and they have taken action to deal with them, just like the problem they have with street gangs. The problem is unlike the last two, the military didn’t want to acknowledge that there may be a problem, just like they did with the racial groups and street gangs in the 80s and 90s. The fact that it takes major things like crimes or terrorist attacks to finally bring these problems out into the open is pretty sad.

      I was in from 1988 thru 1996. The scrutiny that I went through would have exposed any affiliations I had. Not we have Mexican gangs , Islamic finatics, New Black Panthers,KKK, Arien nation, Nation of Islam , MS13, along with alot more initials getting the best combat training in the world so they can be a benifit to there perspective groups. The cause of this is we have become complaisant and think the world is like people see on TV and the Web. Its a simple thing, there are people in this world that want to kill us because of our,ever eroding, freedom. There has to be people that stand in there way and protect the weak. Because of what goes on in our schools there is a decreasing amount of people that are willing to stand up for our country. We have more trying to tear it down. Check out the naked communist from 1962 and see where there agenda comes from. Seems to me they can just about declare,“Mission accomplished”.

      When I joined the Navy in 1984, they did a background check on me. If any of my FAMILY MEMBERS OR FRIENDS had ever even been to an event that was sponsored by a communist organization, I wouldn’t have been allowed my security clearance. So, tell me, how does the PRESIDENT have a security clearance?

    this is just now coming to light? They have been in the military for years.

    As far as background checks before entering; never happens unless you are going into a field (job) that requires a clearance.

    Besides, according to the WH, we are not at war with Islamist radicals. So, it’s ok to enter the military.

      The FBI doesn’t conduct background investigations for the military. The Defense Intelligence Service conducts the investigations. The investigations are for Top Secret clearances.

      I was a member of the US Army Counterintelligence Corps from 1970-1974. Prior to 1974, each branch of the service conducted their own BI‘s and SBI’s. They also conducted counterintelligence operations that targeted people like Hasan who posed a threat to the mission. I was in a detachment that conducted these types of special operations.

      The Army effectively dismanteled the Counterintelligence Corps in 1974. Within CONUS, counterintelligence units did not report to local commanders. The chain of command went up through to the Assistant Chief of Staff, Intelligence.

      When the CIC was disbanded, most agents ended up working for the DIS.

    How the heck are they getting in?
    How did they pass the security clearance for their jobs?
    I was on hold over for months waiting for mine,and had never been more than 100 miles from the place I was born till I signed up! The only members of my family that had ever been overseas were in the Military and at war as US Soldiers at the time they left. At least if you dont count when we came here. A couple hundred years back. I still remember filling out the paperwork on my clearance, and being scared of getting something wrong. As they told us if we filed anything false it was a crime!
    I didnt know half of what they were asking so I asked the NCO running the show about what they wanted to know. He listened to my question and asked where the HELL I was from!
    I told him North East TN. He asked if I was a commie.I said no Sargent. He asked if I hung out with commies? Well no again. Boy just check no to all as I have never met a commie that was backwoods as you! I still waited for months to get cleared while they checked all my BACKWOODS family ,and friends. If I had to wait that long how does someone that is a Radical Muslim that hates the US even GET IN the Military?

      Simple, when the security organizations are forced to go PC, and they find out your religion is Muslim, they stop looking and become afraid of asking things that might make them look biased and “profiling”. That is why AFTER the Ft. Hood shootings, they already knew so much, they were simply afraid to act on it before it happened.

      Now another question – why are we hearing this story? Why do we need to know there are investigations underway. We should only hear about this AFTER the arrests. Is this yet another leak from the White House?

      The House of Saud is pretty much running our Federal Government and much of our Military and also much of our Media. The Saudis have been telling us what to do for decades hidden behind their massive dawah campaign promoting multiculturalism, interfaith dialog, diversity, respect for muslims and at the same time promoting violent jihad, sharia, and Islamic culture.

      This has been talked about for years by men like Robert Spencer on Jihad Watch but too many Americans are deceived and truly believe that Islam is peaceful and muslims are honest brokers for the information to have much of an affect. Even the jihad attacks of 9/11 seem to have cowed the Americans even more.

      Jihad is real and the muslims are working day and night to see their goals achieved…using our hands to do it.

      The non-violent solution is to reduce Islam, not increase it.

      Lets see.Some have no criminal record.Unfortunately religious profiling isn’t allowed.More PC BS.The feds have been in the hip pocket of these animals for years.[CAIR}They have used IDTheft of the living and the dead.They like the dead.They think no one will catch them until its too late.There have been people who have attempted to report abuse of dead peoples security clearances..The feds didn’t want to hear it.All they did was keep refraining that unless money was missing it wasn’t a crime.Yes I can attest from personal knowledge They are beyond useless.

    I don’t understand why the FBI is investigating either. First let’s look at something call FACTS. Fact #1 – If they knew who they were they are too scared to do anything. Fact #2 – DOJ wouldn’t allow them to be prosecuted. Holder has already said even after killing 13 & wounding 29 that doesn’t qualify as a terrorist act.

      Also, there’s the matter of some of our own men being held as “criminals” in Leavenworth. The Leavenworth 10. Political correctness is going to be the death of this country. If they would cull Muslims out when they apply to be in the military, this wouldn’t be happening at such a great extent. Besides, now we’ll have more illegal aliens entering the country unchecked because of the latest Supreme Court ruling. Americans are gonna have to start fending for themselves.

    BUT wait that’s a horrible idea, Biden would crack and Hilary Clinton would be president for a spell and I am afraid Americans would vote her in on Bill’s merits in November and his golden years. OH wait, maybe Reagan should take credit for Clinton administration‘s success if you can call it that because George Bush is taking the blame for Obama’s poor performance as president.

    Why is Nidal Hasan alive today? If the military was allowed to carry real weapons this might never have happened. Armed Forces means Armed Forces and not to call 911 when a crazy Muslim jihadist goes nuts. Nidal Hasan should be pushing up Daisies and not living in a Free America.

I say any soldier that attends a Muslim facility, needs to be checked out thoroughly. And yes, we need to do philological profiling with any soldier that is showing Muslim interests.     I encourage all decent Americans to HEAVILY arm yourselves before or Marxist Dictator (Obama) bans future sales (that’s just the beginning). This POTUS actually tried to manufacture a gun violence crisis in order to make a case for why we need to stop it (Fast&Furious)….Think about that…Our government actually ARMED CRIMINALS!!! And now they don’t want to talk about it?!! 3 years later and no one has been held responsible?!!
