Report: Feds Concerned 9/11 Terror Threat May Involve Dirty Bomb, Times Square Strike

Authorities believe the terror threat about a possible Al Qaida plot to attack New York or Washington, D.C. this weekend could involve a dirty bomb, CBS New York reported.

According to reports, the alleged plot involves detonating car bombs on bridges and in tunnels in New York and D.C. to coincide with the tenth anniversary anniversary of 9/11.

Sources told CBS intelligence suggests the threat could be a dirty bomb, with terrorists mixing radiological isotopes with an explosive device.

“We have to think about a dirty bomb, where you take radiological material and mix it with conventional explosives,” New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said.

In response, the NYPD is deploying radiation detectors, including panel trucks with sophisticated instruments. On Friday, police officers had personal radiation detectors on their belts, and detectors are being used within a 50-mile radius of New York City — in New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania and on Long Island.

Three suspects are currently being sought, at least two of whom authorities believe could be U.S. citizens. They are believed to be of Pakistani origin and possibly fluent in English.

There is also enhanced concern that Times Square could be the target, to finish the job of Faisal Shahzad’s failed car bomb attempt in May 2010.

Security officials told CBS this is how Al Qaida operates: After their 1993 attempt on the World Trade Center did not succeed in causing widespread carnage, they struck again on Sept. 11, 2001.

According to CBS, some of the information on the latest threat could be coming from senior Al Qaida operative Younis al-Mauritani, the man hand-picked by Osama bin Laden to develop terror targets in the United States.

Al-Mauritani was arrested in Pakistan last week with his computer, BlackBerry and other tools.

I would almost agree with you if I didn’t understand Islam.

As much as I am against murder and war Islam as you so “main stream” posted is a religion. It is not! It is a political ideology shrouded in religion, a way of life based on choice by worshiping a pagan idol professed by a murdering pedophile to destroy freedom and liberties across the world and to incorporate it’s doctrine on all human beings by conversion enslavement or death. I don’t know how else to simplify this ideology that you feel the need to protect and allow them to hide behind a religion.

How many Americans must die before you get your head out of your a$$ and see Islam for what it is and not what your politician or msm talking head tells you what it is.

I’m not a bigot. If this same ideology was tagged with the religion of Christianity I would be equally against it. Same as our President being black yet a socialist. Why cant we expose the very speech and quote the very passages from their books of faith without being called a racist, and being ignorant.

Why must you chastise us for our fear of our children and grandchildren when Islam becomes bolder and more blood thirsty as they strive to emulate muhammad? Ignorant? I ask you to please show me where we’re wrong point to a verse in the Koran that shows us wrong. But remember one thing abrogation. So before you go defending allah under our constitution understand Islam and its designs on you and yours!

The terrorists are not stupid. This whole thing smells like manufactured BS.
Terrorists are not looking to kill a few thousand over a couple of decades very slowly through cancer.
Their goal is to instill terror. Not fear of a slow agonizing death. Duh!
Does anyone here understand what a dirty bomb is? It is a bomb to spread radioactive contamination over a relatively small area. This would be a major inconvenience but not a highly visible terror event.
To instill fear you need people screaming and running in fear for all to see on television not a ten block area of a city blocked off for a couple of years until its all cleaned up.
I worked at Nuclear power plants for eleven years so I know a few things about this idea of a dirty bomb. Anything that is very highly radio active can not just be picked up and moved without killing the person attempting to move it. If it is movable by a person without a lead and steal cask then its not going to have the level of radioactivity that would kill anyone.
So has anyone seen a truck or a crane moving a steal and lead cask into the center of new york city? Do the research for yourselves. This is total BS.

@THEVOICE That is exactly what the NAZI would have said. The terror networks would love to hear you. The very nature in which they themselves put force on and ended many lives ultimately DIED out. Long story short; look how that ended up, brought the world in crashing down with them. There is a battle of truths in America right now. One of them is that American Democracy is here to stay – greatest nation mankind has ever witnessed, one of them is that Americans are United as One, and one of them is that Americans wants to see America continue to be prosperous and bear beautiful life never DESTROYED. We are Genuine and Lead in many beliefs. Here is the difference, you and people with the same mindset as you, have no problem with the idea of America divided because you want to believe that the real threat is Christians/Religion standing in the way. When in fact the American people have a problem with people having a problem with this mythical lunacy. Accountability is not a myth. You best learn that before the tide turns, when we take the fight to those accountable for attacking America’s awesome way of life and for future generations to be very prosperous in anything the individual American citizen wants to pursue. In the name of liberalism the adoption of socialism is a reality and socialism is the biggest dupe played on the human mind – this with your confused sense of religion’s role in humanity, I, like so many other Americans I know, have a problem with that.

And @Steve, I know you aren’t interested in reality, but Islam isn’t a pagan religion! They worship the God of Abraham. Humorously, Christianity on the other hand, has numerous pagan associations by virtue of Roman influence on early Christianity. The most significant perhaps being the doctrine of the Trinity born from the councils at Nicea! The Christian-Pagan relationship is one that has been heavily studied, hundreds of books dedicated to it. You can even find a wikipedia page. How many books are there exploring the associations between Islam and Paganism…? lol, do you read books @Steve? Books not written by conservative talking heads?

Such a shame.. even worse is the left’s denial of reality, hence our surrendering…

“After 9/11, we should have known that the war we faced was greater and wider than one group of thugs sheltering in a desert wasteland half a world away. Our leaders should have told us, and they should have prepared us for all the ugly truths about the nature of the war against us, and the philosophical base from which it was being waged. We should have learned it ourselves and demanded a thorough war, but now we arrive on the eve of that event’s tenth anniversary, and still we cower and huddle in fear at the credible threats looming over us. Our founders, and all the men from their time until the end of WWII must be turning restlessly in their graves at the spectacle of our defeat by such an enemy. ”

I think the threat of a dirty bomb is all hype. Think about it for a second. Why take out a bridge with a dirty bomb, I mean what sets a dirty bomb apart is the nuclear waste aspect of it, but if one did go off on a bridge, I hope one doesn’t, but if it does, the radiation would be over a river and not in the city. Hell, the rivers around NYC are some of the most polluted in the country from what I have heard, so maybe the nuclear fallout will kill some of the germs in the water. I am pretty sure if there was a real threat they aren’t going to tell the media for fear of causing a panic anyway, so if we know about it, it is either intentional misinformation or a hoax. Those backwards thinking middle east morons couldn’t assemble furniture from IKEA, let alone make a functioning nuclear weapon.

JCG is correct with the scenario he described. Also a dirty bomb would send a very large quantity of radiological material airborne and then picked up by prevailing winds. The fact that it is over the water would mean nothing.

I do agree 100% though with the scenario you described as far as trying to trap people on the island before detonation of dirty bomb. However, I am skeptical of the reports of an attack. We didn’t receive any kind of warning before any other attack so why now? I am sure someone, somewhere has at least 10 plots on us at all times. Sounds like using these threats for their own purposes. Why is it permissible for a ‘Believer’ to refer to an atheist or agnostic by stating “Enjoy Hell” or “Your Going To Burn For All Eternity”, but it’s not OK for said non-believer to refer to the believers as “religious nutballs”? Answer: Because that’s how the hypocritical religious right rolls.

And no, my argument (if that’s what you want to call it) is not “silly”. It is in fact substantiated by the very posts here on the Blaze. Look at every single so-called “news” item Scott posts that has to do with some sort of accident or tragedy (e.g., Crane falls at National Cathedral, Irene, etc), and you will find that the majority of the posts fall into either of the two categories I describe.

The key to a collectivist statist central authority is no religion. Make everyone who seeks something higher & greater than themselves become believers in Gaia or a benevolent lets all hold hands while we steal your wealth world government. So long as people can and do believe in something greater than man and the state, they will never be ruled by man or the state. This is what statists like you get all upset about, you hate the refusal to submit to a central authority comprised of sociopaths with a desire to rule over the populace like tyrants.

This has nothing to do with believing in religion or superstition as you call it, it is about rejecting morons like you who want people to bow to a statist all powerful central government that dictates every aspect of life and delivers equal results – except for the ivy league political class & their private jets & lavish lifestyles.

Your tactics are rather transparent and ill conceived. How much did the Soros people pay you to regurgitate this garbage? Reality check…when someone tries to kill you and your family, it is better to kill them first, as distasteful as it might seem….just reality, survival trumps philosophy.

      @Logictrumps,

You arrive at your conclusions about me via a common misconception—that ‘Conservatism’ is married to religion. Nothing could be further from the truth. Conservatives—true conservatism has been hijacked by the religious right in our republic. Beck is the poster child for this axiom.
The reality is that I despise the concept of central statism no less than I despise religious control. I am staunchly opposed to Marxist socialism. I’m staunchly opposed to big government. I’m staunchly opposed to Barack Obama. What I am for is Constitutional Liberty—no more, no less. As far as I’m concerned, Obama, Soros, Evangelicals, Beck, MSNBC, Fox News, and yes even The Blaze are all equally as much a threat to true liberty.

“Conservative,” it appears as if your efforts in patronizing me are a direct reversal in your personal philosophy. You stated in a previous post that it was “no big deal” that New Yorkers are faced with the possibility of an imminent attack. For one harboring so much anger at those that would impose themselves and their beliefs on others, you seem quite complacent in regard to yet another attack on American citizens at the hands of Muslim extremists. I am a veteran, and my husband is active duty military with two tours in the Middle East under his belt. Our family has sacrificed more for this country than you and your corrupt ideology would ever imagine taking upon yourself. I suggest you put your money where your mouth is; shut your trap, get off your liberal fanny and move to France if you think our country is so unjust. Heck, move to Iran or Afghanistan if you love Muslim extremeness so much. In case you have forgotten your history, our country was founded upon creationist principles; that all men are created equal in the sight of God, and that most importantly, in God we trust.

Why so hateful to Christianity in one post and yet defending Islam in another. Within these two posts you have been outed and labeled a fraud to the very ideas and trust laid down by the founders and the Christian precepts that formed this republic.

If you don’t hate muslims and support ramming your own definition of Christianity down others throats, you’re not a real “conservative.” These people would pervert the Constitution just as much as Obama, just in different ways, and have a public prayer before doing so.

      @Partiotme,
First, thank your husband for his service from me. It is greatly appreciated. Second, isn’t it in fact true that you really don’t know jack shiit about me? Do you know if I am myself a veteran or not? Do you know if like you, I have family members serving this country overseas? Of course you don’t. But like the rest of your religious nutball buddies, that doesn’t seem to matter—facts don’t seem to matter. And therein lies the contradiction—the hypocrisy of religion that have and will continue to comment on and expose whenever and wherever I can. You claim, like most BBT’s will, that our Republic was “founded on creationist principles”, but at the same time choose to either ignore or pretend that the truth of factual history. You spend your time falsely accusing me of being a liberal, but not a single word of the people on this very thread calling for the mass murder of human beings solely on the basis of their religious affiliation. Of course, that isn’t surprising due to the fact that Christianity has held this stance in the past and in fact attempted to carry out those plans more than once.

Islam, as a religious dogma, is a threat to liberty. Christianity is a threat to liberty. Progressivism is a threat to liberty. Psuedo-conservatism, more popularly known as the religious right, is a threat to liberty.

I am a Christian. I beleive the Bible to be the word of God. I am also military veteran with multiple deployments into the ME. I don ‘t think the teach was supporting islam, barry, big gov, or socialism. Just because he is not of our faith should we attack him? I say no. I will probably be called a commie muslim loving obama lover now but who cares. The Lord knows the hearts and minds of all. I don’t want muslims in my community, neither do my neighbors. We have our ways to keep them and other undesireable elements out. If you all are so upset that he attack the faith, then defend it like Christ did. Use scripture, not name calling. It just goes to show that not many out there truly understand the message of our Lord and Savior. That includes the big money political religion movement. Anybody who would try to profit, be it monetarily or to advance a career or agenda, is worse than an unbeliever and an infidel IMO. The Rick Perry types are just as bad as Barry when it comes to this. It’s too bad most view the world through blue or red glasses. That’s why Ron Paul will never win, barring a miracle. Stop all the wars and aid to foriegn nations, end the fed, get a grip on spending, simplify tax code and control the damn borders. Those are the only issue that really matter right now, Abortion, the gay problem and anti christian feeling are things we can deal with on the family level for now. “Conservative,” you are absolutely right. Those calling for genocide are equally as bad as any terrorist, and should not be condoned or bestowed upon them the name of Christ. However, in regard to the problem I have with you is that you have blatantly criticized and exercised discrimination against Christians who expressed concern for the citizens of New York City at this time. You stated it was “no big deal” if New York was attacked again. We can point fingers all day, but in the end you are wearing the same shoes as those you accuse of bigotry. I have let myself become entrenched in this argument with you, but you nor I will ever see eye to eye on this subject. You are just as wrong for hating me and labeling others like me as “Bible thumping nut jobs,” as I am in labeling you corrupt. In the end, whether you believe in Christ as our Savior is up to you. I would hope that one day you may come to know Him and ask him to be your Savior. He is always waiting. I must apologize for allowing myself to be provoked and defending my Savior and my religious beliefs. We must practice tolerance across the board, not only to those of the Muslim faith, but also to those of the Christian, Jewish or any other given faith. Jesus teaches in John 13: 34-35 that we must love one another. This commandment is key to tolerance and peace.

@Patriotme, again you are missing the point of my original comment. I did not imply that it was “no big deal”. Of course it’s a big deal. It’s sickening actually, but you’ve missed the point. For a ‘believer’, the fallback position of “God’s Will Be Done” is the position of no big deal. Apparently you don’t read many of the posts on the Blaze, or you simply choose to ignore them. On topics such as disasters or the like, the vast majority of the posts are both religious in nature and fall into one of the two categories I described. You cannot escape this fact. The evangelical Christian faith demands that you either accept a tragedy as being “god’s will” or the aversion of a tragedy as “God’s intervention”, both of those being completely out of your control—hence the “no big deal” implication.

Reading back I don’t see anyone stating “Enjoy Hell” or “Your Going To Burn For All Eternity”, However I do see you referring to Christians as religious nutball’s. Your argument fails.

I carried a geiger counter in my vehicle to measure radiation leakage from Troxler nuclear gauges.
I eventually bought my own to carry in my personal vehicle just for times such as this.
But it will only measure gammas and neutrons at close range. But having an office in an Israeli company, I thought it was a wise investment. They may come in handy some day, but I hope not. The training I received convinced me the aftermath of dirty radiation will not be fortunate, to say the least. Watch around yourselves. You all know what to look for.

Yes most do not understand that a dirty bomb (given the same amount of radioactive material) is far worse than if it had been detonated. Most of the energy is consumed in a critical explosion but if it fails to reach critical that highly radioactive material is scattered widely, just remember how the dust from the towers traveled to see how far and wide such a threat can reach. True that in a critical event much more debris is created and turned radioactive but it degrades rapidly and is spread wider. Where the non critical can remain dagerously radioactive for thousands of years.
      Both are very bad.
