Report Finds 49 Percent of Americans Don’t Save For Retirement

What was once considered sound fiscal policy isn’t getting a lot of attention these days. Approximately 49 percent of Americans say they aren’t putting any money aside for retirement plan, CNN Money reports.

The CNN report is based on a new survey conducted by LIMRA, a “trade association for the financial services industry.”

“The findings from this survey were disturbing, given that people will increasingly need to rely on their personal savings to make ends meet in retirement,” Matthew Drinkwater, associate managing director at LIMRA’s retirement research division, told CNN.

The study, which was conducted in April, surveyed 2,697 Americans.

The report found that American ages 18 to 34 are the “least likely to be saving.” A full 56 percent of the respondents in that age group said they aren’t contributing to a retirement plan like an IRA or a 401(k).

“In order to have the adequate savings necessary to meet their financial needs in retirement — which could last 20 or more years — it is critical that these individuals begin saving systematically early in their working years,” Drinkwater said.

The biggest reason consumers say they aren’t contributing to an IRA is because it’s too expensive.

Only 25 percent of the survey’s respondents said they have worked with a financial professional to plan for retirement.

I have no doubt that Social Security will be means tested by the time I retire. That’s OK. I’ve never counted on it being there, and it’s not a legitimate function of the federal government anyway. When it does make the transformation into a welfare program, I hope that they base it on how much an individual has EARNED over the years, rather than how much they’ve SAVED.

If they just look at savings, those of us that have not foolishly bought iphones and ipads, but saved our money instead, will get the short end of the stick. Just like the bail out for mortgages benefited the people that lived beyond their means and the people that bought a house they could afford ended up with the tab.

Of course it will be based on how much you saved. Get used to it. Those who did the right thing, scrimped and saved, payed their mortgage, only bought a house they could afford, didn’t take expensive vacations, didn’t buy expensive toys with the grocery money and are generally responsible will ge nothing. If we don’t get rid of Obama now watch out for your 401k and IRA they are coming for that next.

HOW CAN THE GOOD CITIZENS SAVE? – We Owe Organized Crime.

The American Revelution was over roughly a 14% tax. Many US citizens currently pay in excess of 50% of their earnings when you include direct and all indirect tax, sales tax, property tax, gas tax, and etc. It’s outrageous we continue to accept this slavery.
God never intended man to pay the fruit of his work to a criminal syndicate claiming to do him good.
The gov. and the bankers have the same racket. One is tax and one is banker interest. Both do nothing but steal Your hard earned fruit while sitting on their axx.

It’s really not that difficult to understand. Obtain a marketable degree( engineering, accounting, nursing) or trade(electrician, welder, oil field worker); live within your means; max out your 401(k) and Roth IRA; purchase rent houses for cash near a college campus and retire comfortably at 55.

That is the old way of successful living. When SHTF, none of it will work.

      (1) You cannot find a job, when the country is in chaos. You are also competing with all the other engineers, or Indian engineers in India are much cheaper.

      (2) When a country is poor, Middle Class seems “Rich.” Our Gov. is coming after our 401 K and Roth IRA. That is why the WH is pushing for “spread the wealth.”

      (3) When a country turn to the Left, Education is the least of his priority. China had closed ALL of their schools for 10 years during Mao. People with education were sent to farm and became hard labors. So, the house next to the college may not work either. Unless, it is a government propaganda school.

      (4) Actually, having property is a crime in a pure Communist society as well.

I’m sitting here shaking my head. You really do have a problem with “Normalcy Bias” don’t you? “Can’t never could do nothing?” That‘s a quaint saying but doesn’t always apply. It would seem that you have all your retirement vehicles maxed. Cool, until the dollar is worthless and then what do you have? A truck load of toilet paper. Putting your money into 401Ks or IRAs at this point in time is foolish to say the least. Hard assets, gold, silver, food et. al. should be the ‘savings’ plan of the future.

As for we would never become a Communist country unless we lost a war to a Communist country? That, I’m afraid is going on right now. Almost every senior cabinet official and czar is a commie revolutionary from the 60‘s and 70’s. Have you heard about the leaked Army FM that tells of US I/R camps and how they are to be run? Probably not. It broke a couple of days ago but there’s been only one source reporting it. FM 3-39.40 Internment and Resettlement Operations (PDF) and YES it includes US Citizens on US soil. It was broke May 3rd, but nobody else is saying a WORD about it. Here’s something for you to read also. “The planned re-election of Obama, revolutionary style” It’s about 1/4 of the way down, 3rd article here: http://homelandsecurityus.com/ It’s chilling reading what they are planning to do as soon as this summer. How could we?

Americans are too busy paying taxes so Obama can give $60 BILLION PLUS and more to come to the IMF (international monetyary fund) so Americans can BAIL OUT Greece and the rest of Euopre who get to retire at 60-65 with a generious state penstion AND every working year of their life get 30 days FREE PAID VACATION for every European.

And don’t forget, Americans are paying taxes FOR THE DEFENSE of EUROPEANS (England/Germany/Spain/ etc) and for Asians (South Korea/Japan, etc) and now Obama is opening up a new military base in Australia . ALL these countries can pay for their OWN military defense – bring out troops home.

And don’t forget, AMerican taxpayers are in debt for TRILLIONS for the Iraq war and Obama slapped BILLIONS more on starting the LIbya war (those pessky Muslim protestors were going to shut down LIbya oil wells if the wrong people got in charge and France and China get THEIR OIL from Libya (USA only gets 5% of oil from Libya) so American military was trotted out to Libya on Chiana bidding.

Me: 53, $19.00 an hour, $900.00 a month mortgage, $4500.00 in CC bills, no cell phone, my TV is 18 years old and works great, I have (as of april) $451,000 in savings, annuities, 401K, stocks.

Him: 36, $17.00 an hour, lives with mom & dad, $22,000.00 in CC bills until he BK’d, $1,200.00 mortgage until he short saled it and ruined his credit, buys 1-4 big screen TV’s a year, has a new smart phone every few months, has about $4,000.00 to his name all told.

Now, in 17 years (when he reaches my age) could he be at or beyond what I have if he buckles down? Not in this economy or the worse one heading our way. But I hope he does do well somehow…nice kid…just a little youthful irresponsibility financially at the moment.

You are probably right, I see many people (even food stamp users) with fancy phones, clothing, new cars. They eat out and go to movies, amusement parks, and blow money on all sorts of things that I consider needless.

If people took a good look at where their money was actually going, they would be able to save. For most younger people, they eat out 3 meals a day. Most of their money ends up going into the toilet, literally, and causes health problems at the same time.

And most of the people I have met on Food Stamps, don’t even own a car.

If you even qualify for Food Stamps, and most people don’t qualify for them, even if you have no income at all.

A family of five will get around $300.00 a month Food Stamps.

So if most people don’t qualify for Food Stamps, who’s getting that money your talking about ????

WHOA NOW! It wasn’t my generation that started the entitlement state and decided to enslave their children in a mountain of debt. It was not the under 30′s who have given us the almost century of a ponzi scheme known as “social security” and it wasn‘t the under 30’s who have forced us to live in a society that locks their elders away in a “nursing home” when they are in the last years of their life because it might cause them some kind of burden. No, I lay the blame squarely on the shoulders of the men and women who made this nation what it is today while I will try to steal the reins from them and steer us away from the edge of the precipice. God help my generation be successful in bringing back true liberty to this nation. We’ll need it to right the wrongs of the previous generations.

And lastly, my generation isn’t perfect. Nor do they all think like I do, but please remember that they are working with the handicaps that they were dealt. Handicaps such as an egregious social education system brainwashing them with socialism and never teaching them the important things in life life how to provide for themselves or their family. Oh, and growing up in a police state has its disadvantages as well.

Well, Bryan, you must know honest people using the food stamps. I see the tally of some of the carts that are overflowing with meats of all sorts, junk food, etc. Not cart. CARTS. they are into the 700-1000 range. This is at my local stores. I tend to pay attention to how people spend my tax money.

Now, not all food stamp people can do all the things I listed, and actually was only including them in the new phone, clothing and car category. I dont follow them all day to see where they live and what they do for recreation.

I see these people with the overfowing carts load all their food, after they pay cash for beer and smokes, into a newer car than mine, and mine is a 98. If you went to the welfare office in my area, it looks like a Cadillac Escalade/ lincoln Navigator car lot. The people have shoes that cost 100′s. designer clothes, and hair styles, with finger nail jobs that cost alot of money as well.

Again, thats not all recipients. But even the ones that buy a small amount of food have a new car and are not starving. In CA, they run commercials all day on the radio that say you can get food stamps if you own a house, have a car, have a job. They are not something that is hard to get.

The people with the overflowing carts are also the ones that work under the table, game the system, sell drugs, sell the food they buy with assistance. I do my best to bust my ass to feed my family. It just angers me that these layabouts can eat like kings and do nothing all day

      Bryan,
to explain myself further, I am a very frugal shopper, so I go to our stores every week and buy the sale items, so I am in 6 different stores at least a few times a week per store. I am usually the only one that pays cash in any line I am in.

The overflowing cart people most likely live together and pool their benefits, as they seem to be family or friends. Sad thing is the adults are as big as a house and the kids are skinny as straws.
They still have a new car though, and most are on section 8 housing, or they would not be in this area.
We have a large % of sec 8 people here. Most abuse the system. 90% of them get kicked out of the program once audited.
Not trying to bust your nuts, just letting you know how it is.

There is no $700.00 or $1000.00 in Food Stamps. Food Stamps are based on the number of people in the house hold and income, and the government does everything it can to make sure people get the lowest amount in Food Stamp money as possible. So it‘s not a question of who’s honest, it’s what the government gives someone, and most of the time it’s nothing.

There is Food Stamp Fraud, the government just doesn’t take someones Food Stamps away from them for fraud, they’ll put you in jail for that, and it does happen.

Poor people do not buy their Beer and Smokes from the local grocery store, it’s too expensive. Even Walmart has got-in to high in their prices. Smoke Shops and Convenient Stores are alot cheaper.

And yes, people do go together and pool their Food Stamps, but mostly homeless people do that.

I know these thing about Poor People, because I am the Poor. And from time to time, when thing really get bad, I have to go to the local Food Bank and stand in line. While standing in line everyone talks to each other, no one holds back.
In that line, are people from all walks of life. The people are made up of, Business owners living out of there businesses, veterans, families living in cars and in the woods to alcoholics and drug addicts.
And the government gives most of them nothing, thats why their at the Food Bank. And because so many people go, they run out of food.

Poor people know one thing for sure, theirs very little help for them.

And the people that had cars, have been to jail for driving without insurance, expired drivers licence, expired tags…. Some people have told me they where on their way to work, when thay where arrested and had their car taken from them, and that how they became homeless…..

I didn’t put as much into it as I should have but I did save. Now that I‘ve gotten out I rolled my TSP over into my company’s 401k and increased the amount of my earnings invested for retirement. There is simply no excuse for not doing something to ensure your financialy ready to retire. It’s too expensive is the most rediculous excuse.

How can you save for retirement when the wages are low and you can barely afford to buy a house and car to live? The only way to save is if you have no debt at all. Wait until the real wave hits! Not only will you loose everything, but also still owe debts. It’s not very far from happening!

Not only that, but wait until you have to pay even more for healthcare while they let companies pay even less. If this doesn’t make you mad, I don’t know what will.

If the company’s matching on a 401k – e.g. 50% on the first 6% – cut the cable tv off and start getting a nest egg going with at least 6% of your paycheck. It might even drop you down to a lower tax bracket.

The downside to the 401ks and IRAs? The government going all Argentina or Venezuela on us and nationalizing them.

    It’s already being discussed.

Ruck. You are right, why save any money? It will just make us “selfish bad rich people,“ bigger targets to ”spread the wealth.”

At least, by not saving, we have spent the money the way we want to. I have always been very very frugal, but ever since 2008, my motto is “to spend it all, so we don’t become targets.”

I am not shocked by it either, but not for most of the reasons mentioned here. I’m surprised this number is not much higher. People living beyond their means is nothing new, but it is exaggerated now by the entire entitlement generation of useful idiots.

I see people every day driving Mercedes and BMW’s living in houses that cost only slightly more than their cars. The problem is only partially the economy, but has more to do with human nature.

Most Americans, now and historically have never saved for their retirement. Most people spend what they have. I say when they get old let ‘em die in the gutter. Their fault.

in the 90′s I would have agreed with you but now, I see what my friends and relatives go through with loss in this economy, losing absolutely everything and fighting to keep the lights on and food on the table, I would say this is more about the current economic times and less about peoples general stupidity, I do agree there are many of those idots out there but in this economy I would say many just cannot do it
