Report: Ford Pulls Anti-Bailout Ad After Pressure From Obama Admin.

Remember that clever little Ford ad that showed an actual buyer being led into a surprise news conference and answering impromptu questions? You know, the one where the buyer says, “I wasn’t going to buy another car that was bailed out by the government. I was going to buy from a manufacturer that’s standing on their own: win, lose, or draw. That’s what America is about is taking the chance to succeed and understanding when you fail that you gotta’ pick yourself up and go back to work.”
Ford, you may remember, didn’t accept any bailout money. Here’s the ad:
Well, the last time you saw it may have been the last time you saw it. What do I mean? According to a report from The Detroit News, the ad has now been pulled by Ford due to pressure from the Obama administration.
Columnist Daniel Howes explains:
[...] Ford pulled the ad after individuals inside the White House questioned whether the copy was publicly denigrating the controversial bailout policy CEO Alan Mulally repeatedly supported in the dark days of late 2008, in early ‘09 and again when the ad flap arose. And more.
With President Barack Obama tuning his re-election campaign amid dismal economic conditions and simmering antipathy toward his stimulus spending and associated bailouts, the Ford ad carried the makings of a political liability when Team Obama can least afford yet another one. Can’t have that.
The ad, pulled in response to White House questions (and, presumably, carping from rival GM), threatened to rekindle the negative (if accurate) association just when the president wants credit for their positive results (GM and Chrysler are moving forward, making money and selling vehicles) and to distance himself from any public downside of his decision.
The Hill reports the ad is gone from both TV and YouTube. In fact, the only version we could find is from someone using his phone to record the TV (seen above).
The White House didn‘t return The Hill’s request for comment. Hot Air’s Ed Morrissey, however, did offer his thoughts:
[T]he fact that the White House exerted pressure on Ford to cease and desist is a rather ominous example of why we want government to stay out of the business of running auto companies at all. A free market doesn’t stay free when government begins competing in it, and just the mere existence of the ability to use its regulatory power to favor its own operation will distort market behavior in significant and freedom-chilling ways. Knocking an ad critical of government policy off of television and the Internet is simply a more visible symptom of those dangers.
UPDATE:
Ford is claiming (via Facebook) that it didn’t pull the ad out of pressure but that it stopped running it after four weeks per normal rotation procedure. That still doesn’t explain why the ad was pulled from YouTube. However, as Hot Air notes, the ad was re-posted on YouTube last Friday and only has about 300 views.
UPDATE II:
Michelle Malkin has been corresponding with representatives from Ford and the White House via Twitter. Both have denied any pressure:
Scott Monty is the Ford social media director and writes on Twitter: “We did not pull the ad under pressure.”
I have asked him directly: “Did the White House contact Ford to complain about the ads or not?”
Waiting for a response…
***
Scott Monty’s response:
My follow-up: “So can you find out and let us know whether WH called to complain or not? It’s germane.”
And: “If you are denying substance of D. Howe’s Detroit News report, are you going to ask paper 4 a retraction?”
Seconds later, White House press flack Dan Pfeiffer tweeted: “Lots of bad info/reporting out there today: Report on POTUS and Troy Davis and Detroit News column saying WH pressured Ford are both false.”
My follow-up: “So did anyone at the White House contact anyone at Ford to complain about the bailout ad or not?”
I think a FOIA request is in order…

Submitting your tip... please wait!

One of the great things about driving a big diesel spitting truck is when I see a hybrid with an Obama sticker on the back, I pull right next to them on the freeway, punch the gas and give them a nice, black diesel smoke screen. Makes me feel wonderful to do my part of “spitting” in the face of what this administration represents and anyone who supports it. I does my heart good to piss off a liberal. In closing, I’d like to issue a challenge to Uncle Sam, considering they would love nothing more than to tell the American people that they have to drive “eco-friendly” vehicles. Come and try to take it……….I dare you.

He is bent on destroying life as we know it. At least you have a car to worry about putting gas in!! Some of us no thanks to his policies cant get work!!
So much for Freedom of Speech. Of course it only applies to those who are an arm of this regime. Who in the bluehell do these ppl think they are to tell Ford to pull that ad? We all know this ad was yanked b/c of of regime pressure and not normal rotation/ lifespan of an ad… I mean cmon Ive seen the same ads by companies run for over a year!! I ask all of you to call Ford:
Customer Relationship Center
800-392-3673
800-232-5952 (TDD for the Hearing Impaired)
Tell them to start running the ad again or to make another one with an even stronger message. Pressure Ford to push back against this regime, regardless of the excuses coming out… obviously we know this Chicago style tactic to push it off like coincidence etc by the “victim”.
Since when does the government get involved with ads… oh wait this wouldnt have anything to do with the fact that Ford sell more cars than GM (aka Government Motors) would it?You cannot give in to this regime. The more you give the less we will have left to fight them. This is political correctness on steroid but even worse as it is bullying from Emperor Obamas regime. If companies give in lttle by littel we are truly doomed. http://SavingtheRepublic.com

Posted on September 27, 2011 at 3:29pmI’m disappointed they caved under the pressure, but understand that they will probably experience a Gibson style raid should they not comply. While I don’t think companies should dabble in politics as a whole, this one is different for me. They didn’t take the money and that is HUGE for a lot of us. For the administration to go after them unfortunately these days is no surprise. Another reason we have to get this dictator out of office and start getting back on track.

Posted on September 27, 2011 at 3:45pmAnother example of the Obama administration meddling in business and picking winners and losers. This is wrong on so many levels. Ford has every right to advertise it’s vehicles as being made at a company without fiscal problems. The consumer will decide if that’s a viable strategy NOT the government but the perpetual election campaign that is the Obama administration is paranoid. Any environment where secrecy and social and political control are the operating parameters can breed paranoia. We saw this with the White House healthcare “snitch site” (flag@whitehouse.gov) where citizens were encouraged to turn in information — or people — who were reporting “lies” about ObamaCare. Not learning from their earlier mistake, recently Team Obama launched attackwatch.com. If you follow the link, you will notice the address is “my.barackobama.com.” How touching, how personal, and how very, very creepy. So this kind of “sensitivity” to anti-bailout (and by proxy anti-stimulus) publicity is it be expected from such a despotic, controlling, inept and corrupt administration. And Ford being heavily unionized and knowing the retaliatory nature of the Obama admininstration sanitizes the administration’s role in the decision to pull the ad. But the ad speaks for itself nonetheless.

In other words, Ford took advantage of the whines and cries of the eco fruit jobs desire to “go green” with vehicles that cost twice as much money.
It didn’t have anything to do with the stimulus garbage. The CEO was for the stimulus for what reason again? Because the demise of competitors would cause chaos to the industry as a whole. I realize some aren’t to quick on this whole “old fashioned” Free Market stuff, and it’s effects on the Nations economy, so I’ll help you out a little. It drives competitive pricing, which is good for consumers, helps to combat inflation, also good for the consumer, and means more people are working, surprise………..that too is good for the economy!

And if you’re one of the stupid apologists/fans of GM… what do you think about this “American” auto company‘s plan to build Chevy Volts in Communist China so they can take advantage of China’s $20K/car “incentive”….. under the stipulation that GM must share their advanced electric car technology with the Chicoms (which was funded with the aid of American taxpayer money). Report Post »“You really showed them, supporting the company that ASKED FOR THE BAILOUTS IN THE FIRST PLACE.”
It doesn’t matter if they asked for anything or not, the fact is they didn’t take any. That is like the parable in the Bible where the man asked one of his sons to go out and do some work for him, the son said that he wouldn’t do it. The man then asked his other son to go out and do it for him, this son said that he would do it. The second son never went out and did anything while the first son decided to go out and he did what had been asked of him. Now, which one is the “obedient” son? GO FORD. I will never go out and buy a GM or Chrysler until they first give me the car that I paid for in the bailout. To make up for the money that was stolen from me to pay them, it would have to be a top of the line, fully loaded car of my choice. Then after that I MIGHT consider buying another car from them when/if I need one.

Posted on September 28, 2011 at 1:36pmAnd to underscore the in-your-face Facism being exhibited by this administration and its Rockfellow/RatsChild/Build-A-Turd Puppet Masters:
“But other car-buyers who want to follow his lead better be careful not to purchase a Ford car that was funded in part by the $5.9 billion loan that Ford Motors received from the Department of Energy’s Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program. The Administration brags that this taxpayer-backed loan would help Ford upgrade factories in the Mid-west and “convert nearly 33,000 employees to green manufacturing jobs.” Yes, because these workers now spend their time manufacturing more fuel efficient cars, the Administration gets to tout them as a part of the much hyped “green jobs” revolution.
Ford’s was just one of dozens of loans that the Energy Department made through the loan program to spur “green jobs” with government “investments” in new technologies. Readers of course will be most familiar with the $535 million loan that was given to the now-defunct solar panel manufacturer Solyndra.
Americans are rightfully outraged about this brewing scandal, with emails showing the White House pressuring the Office of Management and Budget to expedite the loan and the almost-expected fact that a big Obama fundraiser stood to gain from the federal support.”

Posted on September 28, 2011 at 2:54pmI grew up a Chevy guy but I am so disgusted with them. I hate to say it but I have a lot of respect for Ford right now. A few years ago before all of this happened. Ford saw the writing on the wall and sold of several of the brands that weren’t bringing in enough money. That allowed them to stay afloat through the rough times. If GM didn’t see it coming then their accountants need to be looking for a job.
Report Post »Don’t anyone be fooled. The bailout was not about saving the American Auto but to save the American Auto Workers Union. GM and Chrysler could have filed bankruptcy dissolved their union contracts and started production in a very short period of time. Unions are sucking the life blood out of every industry that has the misfortune of being associated with them. They are the reason that so many American cars were put together so poorly that people stopped buying them.
Keep buying American!

Posted on October 2, 2011 at 3:30pmFord took a $5.9 billion loan from department of energy at same time it refused Obama government bail out loans. It’s a bit disingenuous on their part to create a commercial claiming to not take govt. money. Plus the bail out agreement which car companies took helped them restructure union contracts thus enabling them to post profits for the first time in a long time.

Posted on September 27, 2011 at 2:35pmAh yes, history once again repeats itself, just as under the Johnson administration feeling that the non profit churches and charities would turn upon his administration. So it is with Obama and the pulling of the ad via Ford due to the image Mr Obama needs to project — the saviour of the auto industry and the unions as well.
He will never just up and admit to being a failure across the board.

KICK ‘EM OUT ON THEIR COLLECTIVE BUTT ! ! !
This is a CROCK !
Are there no LAWS governing this sort of government intervention in the affairs of private industry?
If not, I can think of a new Constitutional Amendment we need to get ready for 2013.
ANYBODY BUT OBAMA, 2012 ! ! ! !

Posted on September 27, 2011 at 2:28pmNow, that is sad. Ford giving in to thug pressure from the WH. Raids on Gibson guitar! Wow, we are moving into Communistic control. Isn’t this against the Constitution or have they done completely away with that. I wonder if the MSM will talk about this situation. This is getting scarier and scarier.

I do want them to air this more, but I also understand that the government plays hard ball and more or less controls the unions that work at Ford.

I say we stick together, AND SHOW THEM HOW TO PLAY IT.

Posted on September 27, 2011 at 2:31pmI totally agree. My husband has always preferred GM trucks but has started rethinking that preference. When did we start allowing the government to apply pressure to the use of truth in advertising?

Posted on September 27, 2011 at 2:32pmIt has gone beyond thuggery and we are spiraling toward communism. Since when does the White House get to control companies and ads? Did we go to sleep and wake up in Russia? Who hijacked America? Oh, I forgot, ever since this POTUS has been in office, he has run the nation toward dictatorship through intimidation and fear. We have got to get him voted OUT!
