Report: Gary Johnson to Drop Out of GOP Race, Run as a Libertarian

AP

Gary Johnson will drop out of the Republican primary race to run for president as a Libertarian, Politico reported Tuesday.

The former New Mexico governor plans to make the announcement at a Santa Fe press conference Dec. 28, according to Politico. Libertarian state leaders will be informed of his intentions during a conference call Tuesday night.

An advocate for marijuana legalization and critic of what he termed the “social conservative fringe,” Johnson never gained any traction in the GOP race and was excluded from nearly all of the Republican debates. Just last month he said in an interview he felt “abandoned” by the Republican Party and thought it had left him “by the wayside.”

The Dec. 28 press conference, to be held in the New Mexico State Capital, has been announced on his Facebook page, though there is no mention of what it will entail. According to Politico, his campaign spokesman only said that it would be “a significant announcement.”

Ok 1) Gary WHO? The people of this nation have heard him he doesnt appeal to anyone & is why he has floundered. Who does Johnson think he is going third party? We are trying so badly to get away from politicians who think they know better than us yet we have examples of few being rammed down our throats if they dont get the GOP nomination!

      2) NOW is not the time for ANYONE to attempt a third party(TP) run. We thought ‘08 was an important election but little did we know that ’12 will be the election of our lives. That said experimenting with a TP run is not an option. Any attempt WILL FAIL and will only give Obama a re-election.

Do we need a third party? YES!
Lets make something abundantly clear, there isn’t enough time to get a legitimate third party candidate(TPC) for a POTUS run. Push for TPC‘s at the local state and lower federal level that by the time ’16 rolls in TPC’s will have a legitimate stake in govt. It must be a true bottom up movement not top down. Top down movement for TPC (ie Johnson, Paul or whomever) will only mean disaster at the polls.
In ‘92 Perot’s TP run split the vote in favor of Clinton
In ‘04 Nader’s TP run split the vote in favor of Bush
WE CANNOT RISK IT IN ‘12 the stakes are too high and its will be a lock for Obama. We cannot handle 4 more years of Obama.

Anyone tries a TP run you will destroy this nation; put your ego’s aside & THINK of the repercussions of a 12 TP attempt! http://SavingtheRepublic.com

“A vote for ron paul is the same as a vote for an Obama 2nd term. Ron Paul zealots are almost as bad useful idiots as the progressive liberal 99%, and they accomplish the same goal…”

And a vote for Lincoln was the same as a vote for another Buchanan term in 1860. Those bastard Republicans lost the election for the Whigs. Funny how Republicans forget their own history as a THIRD PARTY that actually won when people STOOD ON PRINCIPLE, instead of voting for their party, even if their party is just as bad (or worse) than the other guy.

Make no mistake – big government, progressive Republicans like Newt “I have a new idea to shred the Constitution” Gingrich or Mitt “I’m a progressive” Romney will lead us to the exact same place as Obama. The only real difference is whether we will have a government that tramples all over our rights to “protect our freedoms” from terrorists and “abandons the free market to save it”, or one that tramples all over our rights to “protect our freedoms” from ourselves and “abandons the free market” by convincing people that it doesn’t work.

The question here is are you making a stand for liberty, small government, and freedom, or continuing on the Road to Serfdom with a guy who happens to not be Obama.

My initial impression of Gary Johnson was that he was a flake. Then after a debate or two and a couple of online interviews, I began to at least listen to what he was saying and my initial opinion began to change as I heard some of his ideas. Suddenly he was nowhere to be seen or heard, until a couple of weeks ago when he stated it was the GOP who have purposely kept him out of further debates after the initial ones, depriving me and others a chance to understand his positions more fully. How dare they! I don’t know if it would have made any difference, but with the way there has been a different front runner every other week, who can truly dispute that Johnson may be at the top of the heap right now if he was opened in depth? So he feels he was wronged by the party and I guess he’s about to teach us all a lesson, for if he does run, he will probably be handing the election over to the current occupant. The powers that be will be the ones to blame for trying to fix this election to the liking of their insider elites instead of letting We The People decide. If things weren’t so dire, I’d truly consider backing a third party candidate. In spite of what we’ve been led to believe, I kind of think an additional party on the far right and one just slightly to the left of the GOP might be better for us.

I think everyone realises the Democrat party has been taken over by the extreme left. I think the Republican party has also been taken over, by big government progressives i.e. Gingrich, Romney and Perry etc. We’ve also gone away from our non-intervensionist foreign policy. I love Gary Johnson but I have to agree with bmartin’s 2nd point: NOW IS NOT THE TIME FOR A THIRD PARTY RUN! We really need to revamp the voting system so that 3 people running doesn’t split the conservative or liberal vote. A simple way to do it would be to vote…. eliminate the lowest person, vote again, eliminate the lowest person, etc. (This could be accomplished electronically with just one trip to the polls if everyone simply ordered the candidates from first to last choice on their ballots.)

Until that happens (if ever) a conservative third party candidate running for office is only hurting the conservative cause.

Please get your head out of the of the swamp in which you Ron Paul advocates wallow. This man is insane, because there is no real logic to his solutions. He just spews out simplistic ideas with no thought as to where it will lead us or what it will cost us in the long term. Of course, you Ron Paul supporters don’t have the capacity to think about those types things, because your only concern is your own selfish wants and needs, without any regard for others. You are willing to risk giving Obama four more years over such stupidity? If our country is in trouble, it’s not so much because of Liberals, Democrats or RINOS, but it’s because of mindless people like you. THINK! THINK! THINK!

The reason why Ron Paul has seen a rise in the polls is because he has not been properly vetted, just like Obama, so the masses don’t know the real story behind the rhetoric.

This guy is an anti-semite and bigot, just like Jimmy Carter. In fact, without question, that seems to be the underlying theme driving his candidacy and the one quality that reflects his thinking.

Tell me, what other ideas does he have that make any logical sense? Would that be getting rid of the Federal Reserve or castrating our military to extent it will never recover? Don’t you understand the potential harm of such silliness? Let me help you! What about higher unemployment rates, more people out on the street, families starving in greater numbers than they are today.

Ron Paul who is running as a republican would have to settle for the VP slot rather than the head hauncho on the ticket if he was to desire running as a libertarian.

I doubt Kucinich would be a good fit for a VP for Paul. While I agree with him on the warmongering of the major parties establishment candidates, the key problem facing America right now is economic in nature, and Kucinich is not the best option for an economic minded VP. I‘d rather an Austrian economist who shares Paul’s views on defense.

Alternatively, though, Paul could have someone like Michael Scheuer run as VP – someone from the intelligence community that has written about blowback, etc. could add some credibility with people concerned with national security threats under Paul’s presidency. It’s easy to blow off a Congressman with so-called “kooky” views on foreign policy. It isn‘t as easy to blow off those views when they are being espoused by the former head of the CIA’s Bin Laden unit.

When they can’t succeed by the rules they agree upon, they quit and crash the party. We all know malcontents like this. George HW Bush gave us Clinton by breaking his no new taxes pledge. Talk about shooting the messenger. It’ll be the same if Ron Paul runs 3rd party. Republican fools will blame Paul for Barry’s 2nd term, but the real blame should lie at the feet of the Republican party for nominating the progressive Newt Romney as their candidate. Most of us are onto the game. We understand that if we put a progressive in there, regardless of party, no positive change will happen. So, it doesn’t feel like throwing a vote away by voting for a 3rd party candidate (if Paul doesn’t win the nomination). I’d be throwing away my vote if I vote progressive. That’s how I see it.

Loyalty should be to principle, not party. Voting for the “lesser of two evils” has helped to shift the Overton Window so far to the left that Romney, McCain and Gingrich are considered “conservatives” when they are actually progressives and Obama is “moderate” despite being pretty much a socialist. It’s time to return to principle so we can shift the window back to a reasonable place and elect someone that will actually stop the engorgement of government on our liberties.

Crap, site glitched and put that on the wrong one. Anyway, in reply to this comment – Santorum? You mean the guy who, as far as I can tell, only talks about going to war with various Muslim countries (Iran, Syria, etc.) or legislating morality? No thank you.

Who? Drop out? Did he ever join? Is he really a libertarian or is he just pretending to be one so that he will get 0.43% of the vote in the presidential race.

Exactly!. The parties have platforms for a reason, and clearly Gary Johnson, as well as Ron Paul, do not espouse the GOP platform in many major regards. It is disingenuous for them to trying for the GOP nomination.

So the candidate is nonsense, and the party platform is all. Never mind that the Republican platform has been hijacked by warmongers or that it used to stand for just about everything Paul stands for. Never mind that libertarians have been a significant part of the Republican coalition for decades. Never mind that there will always be differences between candidates positions (well, normally), and that’s KINDA THE POINT of a primary process. And, of course, we should ignore the fact that you, and people like you, have been brainwashed to never vote for a third party because “they can’t win” – ignoring as well that anytime actual change has been effected has been when that has happened – such as the Republican party even existing after running on its anti-slavery THIRD PARTY platform in 1856 and 1860.
