Report: Gibbs May Step Down From WH Press Secretary Post

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs is seriously considering taking a new position outside the White House, Politico reports. The chief spokesman for the Obama administration is reportedly considering filling in as a media surrogate for Obama’s upcoming 2012 re-election campaign.

Senior administration officials say Gibbs has not solidified his plans yet and the administration has not found a replacement for him yet. If he decides to leave, Gibbs’ departure will likely come as other White House positions are being moved around, including senior advisor David Axelrod who is expected to leave to begin work on the campaign within the next month.

The two top candidates to replace Gibbs are his deputy, Bill Burton, and Vice President Joe Biden’s spokesman, Jay Carney – although White House officials haven’t ruled out the possibility of other candidates, sources say, which could delay the handover for a few weeks.

Gibbs had discussed staying at the White House, possibly as a senior adviser, with interim chief of staff Pete Rouse and Obama himself, but they concluded he could best serve the president from the outside – as an occasional cable TV commentator and as a political adviser unconstrained by the demands of briefing the press or the responsibilities of serving as a central member of Obama’s kitchen cabinet present at most major policy decisions.

Even after he leaves the White House, Gibbs will remain in close contact with the president and is likely to be included in many major decisions, an official told POLITICO. …

The selection of a Gibbs successor has proven to be harder than originally envisioned. Burton, a favorite of Obama’s who is popular with the press and West Wing staff, has been Gibbs’ stand-in on the road or at the podium during the press secretary’s intermittent absences. But some in Obama’s inner circle view him as too young and inexperienced for the job of delivering Obama’s message and serving as the face of the White House on a day-to-day basis.

I personally hope the Burton rumor is true, especially since we would have more episodes like this to look forward to:

Either way, if he stays as press secretary or becomes a media surrogate for the next campaign, Obama’s opposition benefits.
Burton and Gibbs are the worst.

Do you think that maybe Obama can find a press secretary who can speak for five minutes without interrupting his dialogue with an unbelievable staccato of fillers? Have you ever heard anyone speak at any function who uses every filler known to man as many times as Gibbs does? What do you think when you ask your child if he spilled the milk and he responds; er, um, ah, um, ah, um, ah, ahem, er, ah, um-guilty as charged. Good riddance Gibbs, er, aahhhh, um don’t expect a job in public speaking- no one has the time to listen to your lies!

How can they deny this if they are asking for e-mail addresses? I do not want them to have mine. As far As far as I am concerned it is frankly none of their business unless I choose to e-mail them or willingly give it to them. This is wrong, and I am angry that it could even happen to anyone. I guess since the FCC passed the net neutrality law today, we can expect further invasions of our privacy. As for Gibbs, this guy is such a puppet but I have to admitt comical as a spokesperson for obama. He lacks tact, and does not come off as a professional. His temper and arrogance show clearly when anyone opposes the administration’s agenda. He hasn’t proven to be effective in any way. This other younger man Burton, seems to be out of the same mold as Gibbs. Must be a tough job to try to defend the destruction of your country. Both Gibbs and Burton have obviously been tramed to avoid direct answers to questions. The progressives need to start plotting and schemeing now to re-elect obama, though their efforts will be in vain because America is waking up to this administrations plan and are not going to support loosing our freedom any longer.

Pamela, net neutrality isn’t about invading your privacy. The idea is that service providers treat all content the same. In other words, Verizon can’t give you faster access to mediamatters.com or block theblaze.com just because they want to. That’s how the internet works now, and net neutrality aims to keep it that way. Please check this out for yourself — Glenn is being really misleading on this one.

@MOONBAT – If that is the way the net now works (I am certainly no expert) why do we need a law to tell us to do what we are doing? Are there providers that have been accused of manipulating content? If we try to make laws against what people or companies “might” do there would be no end to it.

moonbat is EXACTLY wrong. i work as an admin in the IT sector. Net neutrality is about controlling the internet where major players are able charge more money, fees etc to the consumer if they start using more bandwidth. Basically, it is about crushing the competition. Don’t believe me? I can certainly elaborate and give examples and links that explain these concepts in greater detail if desired.

Gibbs probably got tired of the stench. What did Obama say today to the GOP ? Plenty of time to campaign for the 2012 election in 2012 ? So, he’s sending all his cronies to get HIS campaign up and running now. Shouldn‘t these people be helping in the white house instead of getting Obama’s campaign up and running ? NO………he wouldn’t do that…….

They might not be making a list as such, but you can bet your rosterium that they will have them STORED. Think about it — the “census takers” GPS-ed your house and PHOTOGRAPHED your front door! I have been unable to get a response with a reason for that yet. The government can search the texts in your cell phone and put a GPS tracker under your car without a warrant. And, don’t even mention airports to me!
