Report: Giffords’ Gunman Is ’Left Wing, Quite Liberal’

According to Business Insider, a woman claiming to have been a classmate of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords‘ alleged shooter Jared Loughner says he has run into the Congresswoman once before and that he’s “left wing” and “quite liberal.” That comes as some on the left are trying to paint Loughner as one who succumbed to angry, Tea Party rhetoric.

Business Insider says Laughner’s classmate made the revelations about his political persuasions via her Twitter account:

Report: Giffords Gunman Is ’Left Wing, Quite Liberal’But when news of the shooting broke, some conservatives, especially Tea Party officials, expressed concern that the left might try to label that gunman as a radical right-winger.

While Tea Party Nation founder Judson Phillips condemned the attack on Giffords, he told The Hill was concerned the Tea Party movement would be blamed for the incident.

“While we need to take a moment to extend our sympathies to the families of those who died, we cannot allow the hard left to do what it tried to do in 1995 after the Oklahoma City bombing,” he said.

Debbi Dooley, a national coordinator for Tea Party Patriots, echoed a similar sentiment to Congress.org. “A lot of people have bets on how long it will take before they blame this on the tea party and that’s absolutely ridiculous,” she said. Her group condemned the attack via Facebook.

“This heinous act will change the interaction between elected officials and their constituents,” the group’s Facebook wall said. “People also pray for the safety of congressmen, senators, President Obama and other elected officials in the aftermath of this shooting.”

Phillips and Dooley were right.

“Some prominent liberal bloggers wasted little time before politicizing the horrific and tragic shooting of a congresswoman in Arizona on Saturday,” Politics Daily’s Matt Lewis writes.

For example, Markos Moulitsas, founder of the liberal website DailyKos, sent numerous tweets chiding Palin and the right for the attack:

Report: Giffords Gunman Is ’Left Wing, Quite Liberal’And:

Report: Giffords Gunman Is ’Left Wing, Quite Liberal’UPDATE:

There’s more anti-conservative political rhetoric bubbling up Saturday evening from a number of Democratic members of Congress.

New Jersey Democratic Rep. Bill Pascrell said he feels like the United States is slipping from the rule of law and order and used the opportunity to publicly lambaste Fox News.  “There’s an aura of hate and elected politicians feed it, certain people on Fox News feed it,” Pascrell said.

“This hostile rhetoric, I hope we put it behind us and try to work on things to move this country forward,” Rep Albio Sires, D-N.Y. said.  “Nobody knows why this guy shot all these people or shot [Giffords], but I just think this rhetoric has to change.”

Additionally, Arizona state Sen. Linda Lopez blamed the tea parties and their “horrible signs” and irresponsibly claimed that the gunman was a “veteran of the Afghanistan war” — an false assumption.

UPDATE II:

We have a number of stories on the front page showing others who have tried to pin the killer, and the killings, on the right, but here are some other examples.

While not specifically saying the “Tea Party” or Republicans, former presidential candidate Gary Hart described the right in a column on the Huffington Post saying that we have now “seen the results of this [angry] rhetoric.”

“Those with a megaphone, whether provided by public office or a media outlet, have responsibilities. They cannot avoid the consequences of their blatant efforts to inflame, anger, and outrage. We all know that there are unstable and potentially dangerous people among us. To repeatedly appeal to their basest instincts is to invite and welcome their predictable violence,” he said.

He added: “That this is carried out, and often rewarded, in the name of the Constitution, democratic rights and liberties, and patriotism is a mockery of all this nation claims to believe and almost all of us continue to struggle to preserve. America is better than this.”

Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-AZ) did name the Tea Party specifically, and also Sarah Palin, while debriefing the shootings.

“[Grijalva] who represents a district adjacent to Gabrielle Giffords’s, said that Saturday’s shooting is a consequence of the vitriolic rhetoric that has arisen over the past few years among extreme elements of the Tea Party,” writes HuffPo. It continues:

“The climate has gotten so toxic in our political discourse, setting up for this kind of reaction for too long. It’s unfortunate to say that. I hate to say that,” Grijalva said in an interview with The Huffington Post. “If you’re an opponent, you’re a deadly enemy,” Grijalva said of the mindset among Arizona extremists. “Anybody who contributed to feeding this monster had better step back and realize they’re threatening our form of government.”

Grijalva said that Tea Party leader Sarah Palin should reflect on the rhetoric that she has employed. “She — as I mentioned, people contributing to this toxic climate — Ms. Palin needs to look at her own behavior, and if she wants to help the public discourse, the best thing she could do is to keep quiet.”

Earlier you believed this was a direct effect of the tea party. You were so convinced that you called for the murder of its members (because you’re a chode). Now that all evidence points to this guy being a feeble disgusting liberal worm, you’re stuck with the “I’m not lost in the woods scenario.” If you would remove your head from your rectum and realize both sides have their faults, maybe you would be more capable of assigning blame. 2011 WILL BE THE YEAR STARS BEGIN FALLING OFF OF THE US FLAG

Democrats have threatend us with violence, murder, riots, and shutting down the government for the last time. We are angered by their threats everytime they are rejected by the American people and loose elections. They are now sending out letter bombs across the nation. They killed a GOP political adviser and dumped his body in a trash bin, and now they open fire on 20 Americans killing a Federal Judge and try to blame it on Conservatives. They did the same thing with the DC snipers, the Uni-bomber, and Zibra Killers. The poisoned brain Democrats do things and then blame it on their political opposition.

We are finished with Democrats. The GOP should erect a high sound barrier in the House of Representatives seperating the GOP from the Democrats.

Short history lesson: Mein Kampf, and the Nazi movement (and fascism in general) was, in large part, a far-right reaction to communism. Nazi supporters in Europe and the US were aligned with this monstrous ideology because the Nazis were also against communism, which they felt, threatened their capitalistic privileges.

I just want to point out that, Left or Right, it is the radical, reactionary, fundamentalist rhetoric and actions, aggravated by instability and mental illness, that lead, inevitably, to this kind of terrible violence.

If we should learn anything from this tragedy, it is to tone down the freaking rhetoric on all sides.

If your going to give a history lesson you should know and understand the history your trying to give a lesson on.

Nazi was short for National SOCIALIST party, as in the far left definition and understanding of socialism. It was fascist and only different from communism in that you could still own your business, but you had to operate it under complete government control.

Naziism was only considered “far right” to the communists. They both occupy very close to the same space on the far far left of the political spectrum.

That‘s the most absurd straw man argument I’ve ever heard. Hitler is not on the left in Europe. Hitler is not on the left in the United States. Hitler and the Nazis were center-right economically, and hard authoritarians. Literally within Mein Kampf, Hitler denounced what he believed was the Jewish-created global conspiracy of communism.

This left-right allgovernment-nogovernment paradigm is absolutely fallacious. The Political Compass, with a dual axis (economic collectivism vs. economic individualism, government libertarianism vs. government authoritarianism) is generally regarded as the best display of political beliefs.

      http://www.politicalcompass.org/

There’s the link, if you want to check it out. But the point is, argue this “Fascists and Leftists believed in the same thing!” nonsense. There’s a reason that the various worldwide “Antifa” movements (ie, “Anti-fascism”) use a black and red flag as a symbol.

      @ AntiFa

“This left-right allgovernment-nogovernment paradigm is absolutely fallacious.”

      (citation needed)

What’s so hard to understand? The terms “right” and “left” ON THIS PARTICULAR CHART, which has zero, nothing, nadda to do with conventional American/European notions of left & right, simply delineate direction on the chart.

Farther to the right *on this chart* is toward anarchy or zero government. Farther to the left on the chart is moving towards more government control and terminating at total despotic rule. Governments take different forms, like Communism and Socialism.

The “top-bottom” vector of the chart indicates whether the government is more socialist (government owns some but not all things, some government-controlled private ownership) or whether it is more communist (government owns and controls everything & everyone).

The main difference between Socialism (of the USSR type) and Fascism (of the Nazi type) is nationalism. Socialism of the type in the old USSR was of the “world socialism” type which sought to convert other governments to Socialism. Socialism of the type practiced by the Nazis is a “nationalistic socialism” which mainly sought to conquer other nations for control & spoils.

We don’t want to just change from “Left” to “Right” in American terms, we *demand* a move to the “less government of any kind” direction. Staying locked in the box of the old “Left vs Right” paradigm is what has brought this nation to this tragic point.

Currently, the Right has got our temporary support as they are currently the best hope of reducing the size, scope, and power of government. Make no mistake, support for the current actors on the Right is *conditional* on their actions and honesty. They can and will be replaced if necessary, just as many on the Left have recently been shocked to discover and will be further traumatized again by these facts in 2012.

Last I checked that doesn’t fall under a “political affiliation” as much as either side would like to believe it in justifying a “cause.” SHAME on Sheriff Clarence Dupnik for feeling inclined to use his television press conference to interject his personal opinion (5-7X) in blaming “talk radio” and “certain television shows” in vile talk creating this issue !!! HIGHLY UNPROFESSIONAL AND HYPOCRITICAL. This should be a time to reflect on sympathy for the victims…. nothing more !!

kryptonite names please? I can find more left wing wackos than you can anyone connected to Tea Party etc. but I guess you are just re-spouting left wing talking points. #1 is our leader telling Republicans to sit in the back of the bus and shut up. That is just a mild thing said on that side. Why is Krugman already spouting off his hate filled rethoric against the right without any clue to what he is saying. The guy has always been an ignorant moron.
So yes kryptonite I am waiting for all your links to violence inspired by the right. I don’t listen to Beck very often because of scheduling but I do listen to Rush and NEVER have I heard him talk of violence towards others. Do you listen to any of the ones you mentioned? My guess is you listen to the vile drivel coming out of the mouths of people like Ed Shultz, Or whats his name Press or even Keith Olbermen, these are the people that inspire hatred towards others.

Time to turn the tables on the left. We have the ammo right here on TheBlaze thanks to Glenn and his team. We have these tweets and we have videos from hardcore radicals calling for violence. Thats all we need, the left uses less info, they go on just a hunch, to point the finger of blame. We have Pivens, Jones and countless others calling for violence. Im challenging Scott Baker, Glenn Beck etc to dig a bit deeper into this Loughner and point the finger of blame at the left for this horrific shooting.

Let the left sweat it out trying to refute it. If this kids tracks lead to any radicals site up to and including any site of The Alphabet Organized Crime Family (http://tinyurl.com/2bndrmn), or any of the radicals vids suggested thats all you need.

many here are simply pointing out that the typical response from the media is if the person was a conservative then his actions are caused by his political views. I personally think we shouldn’t blame the left or the right until evidence is revealed suggesting that his actions were motivated by his political views. these tweets certainly suggest that he was a liberal but we don’t know if that had anything to do with his motivation. The responsibility lies squarely upon the shoulders of the murderer! even if we find an email from Van Jones or some other high profile communist or progressive telling him to do it! This guy still made a choice and murdered people! If we decide to start blaming the Left for this then we are no better than the left!

just because he was a leftist doesn’t mean that he killed the congresswoman BECAUSE of his ideology.

Granted that his ideology DOES have a history of violence, I don’t think we should sink to the level of the communists and blame it on the other side.

Trqanquil. You have nerve. You search these posts for some disagreeable comment to refute. Please don’t try to tell us that you come with no agenda. Your like a paid troll that just throws stuff against a wall with little more than sick self righteousness to back you up. Sorry but your views do not represent the only correct view in the room. It’s a damn shame people died and we all feel that loss, but there were causes for this event and this place is where they get discussed. If you want solace get a bible and a priest don’t try to muddy the waters here with your incessant need to see your name posted as often as possible.

The lefty-loons that like to troll here and suddenly all high and mighty after learning that the shooter was one of their own. If you read the posts on the stories as they were first coming in, they lefty loons were probably getting their keyboards wet from the drool as they were sure it was a conservative or teaparty connected person. Posters like BECKISNUTS were almost ravenous. TRANQUILRIDER is a stone-throwing, glass house living, draft dodger, who left the USA to avoid the draft when he was a hippie a long time ago. I doubt that he is a citizen of Canada though, probably just a permanent resident alien, sucking off the Canadian system. He does return now and again for proper medical care. Am I getting warm TRANQUILRIDER?

Wasn’t it our beloved President telling Hispanic Americans not to let the enemy (Republicans) win? The speed of the leader is the speed of the pack. Vitriolic messages that the Tea Party was made up of idiots and racists went a long way in subduing the rhetoric. – NOT! I HATE HYPOCRITES!
