Report: Hidden Expenses Associated With Wind Farming Cancels Out ‘Green’ Benefits

Civitas, an independent think tank, recently published a report by British economist Ruth Lea — director of the manufacturing renewal project at Civitas and an economic adviser to the Arbuthnot Banking Group – that concludes the expense of wind farms and need for backup energy makes harvesting wind “inordinately expensive and ineffective at cutting emissions.”
According to the U.K.’s Climate Change Act, signed in 2008, greenhouse gas emission goals set a 20 percent reduction by 2020 compared to 1990 levels and an 80 percent cut by 2050. Such drastic reductions fundamentally change the way many businesses operate and require adoption of renewable energy or carbon-cutting technology. Since generation of electricity alone accounted for nearly a third of the U.K.’s CO2 emissions in 2010, according to the report, this is clearly an area where the government is seeking to make improvements.
The Telegraph reports that the U.K. plans to build as many as 32,000 wind turbines in the next two decades. This initiative is part of a goal set by EU’s Renewables Directive to have 15 percent of the energy produced in the U.K. come from renewables by 2020.
The Civitas report states that while wind power looks like a competitive option for alternative energy, additional costs associated are not being considered and may in fact negate the carbon-saving benefits:
The costing of wind-power electricity generation is clearly very complex. But one conclusion can safely be drawn and that is that wind-power is expensive – especially offshore. Under these circumstances it seems unwise to be embarking on a huge programme of investment in wind generated electricity, especially when the country is facing grave economic challenges. This analysis also ignores the perceived environmental costs of wind-power, especially onshore wind turbines.
According to the report, Lea finds that the expense of maintaining backup forms of energy for periods of unreliable wind power could mean that “energy users pay twice: once for the window-dressing of renewables, and again for the fossil fuels that the energy sector continues to rely on.”
The Telegraph reports that skeptics of this research consider evidence in the report “outdated and inaccurate.” According to The Telegraph, Dr. Gordon Edge, director of policy at the lobby group RenewableUK, said the information in the report was developed by “anti-wind cranks” and went on to explain that wind power is meant to supplement existing fossil fuels not replace it all together.
Although Edge considers the data evaluated by Lea as outdated, most of her analysis is based on the U.K.’s Department of Energy and Climate Change 2010 report on electricity generation costs of the major technologies, which includes wind turbines, nuclear, and use of traditional fossil fuels with carbon capture and storage.

This table from the Civitas report evaluates costs of different energy producing technologies in the near term.
Lea also makes note of a 2011 BBC report that states in periods of intense cold, when coal- and gas-fired power stations are relied upon the most, analysis of the weather has shown little to no wind available to generate power.
The Civitas report also points out that work published by the Dutch physicist C. le Pair in October 2011 that found even on “normal windy days” in the Netherlands use of wind turbines actually increased fossil fuel consumption and therefore increased CO2 emissions. It should be noted that this research was published on le Pair’s website and has not been peer reviewed, according to The Guardian. The Guardian states this is not to say the research should be discounted, but that it should be vetted by other experts in the field before holding to this claim.
The Huffington Post UK reports that a spokesperson for the DECC said that the department acknowledges some of the upfront costs associated with wind turbines, which it is working to reduce, but still considers wind power is still a viable source of energy now.

Posted on January 10, 2012 at 5:03pmThe major floods in Vermont and north western Massachusetts from hurricane irene are directly attributed to windmills. The rivers that generate power have been preventing hydro plants from releasing water because the windmills have lowered the price of electricity. Ther hydro plants store the water for high demand peak hours and couldn’t dump the water quick enough when storm was coming. The result was billions of dollars of damage

Report Post »As President, Ron Paul will lead the fight to:
* Remove restrictions on drilling, so companies can tap into the vast amount of oil we have here at home.
* Repeal the federal tax on gasoline. Eliminating the federal gas tax would result in an 18 cents savings per gallon for American consumers.
* Lift government roadblocks to the use of coal and nuclear power.
* Eliminate the ineffective EPA. Polluters should answer directly to property owners in court for the damages they create – not to Washington.
* Make tax credits available for the purchase and production of alternative fuel technologies.

Posted on January 11, 2012 at 2:57pmThese great wind turbines are folly. They consume lost of energy just to function. The majority of people do not know. As a marine engineer its subsystems consume energy just to keep the “main” operational. Lube oil system to cool and lubricate it reduction gears heat exchangers or radiators to cool the lube oil. Energy is needed to run the motors for the lube oil pumps, fans, directional gyros, governors and all the other myriad systems it has. Just look how big these things are. Folly I tell you. As for Solar it has been around for what 50 years? It has not progressed one iota for commercial use. Only for space has it come to its forte. Batteries heavy and expensive and great for what their intended use. Limited power supply. Check this out for an alternative.

Posted on January 10, 2012 at 12:19pmI want to know where PETA is. The wind turbines kill birds every day. If we cover the globe pretty soon their won’t be any birds. Without birds we will have to up the amounts of poison on our crops because a lack of birds. We then will have poisoned food and runoff into the streams and water table. How about using the ocean waves to turn underwater turbines- with gaps between blades big enough for the fish to get thru. No – won’t work, the Kennedys, Gore and John Carry don’t want an eyesore.

Posted on January 10, 2012 at 1:07pm@turkey13 imo, the real problem is wind farms kill tons of bats. bats keep the bug populations in control. do you get alot of stink bugs in your part of the country? we do in mine. we also have wind turbines popping up all over. we get absurd amonts of asian lady beetles, and many other flying bugs that bats would otherwise consume. bats seem to be kinda attracted to the sound of the wind mills. they have poor eye sight and travel via bat sonar. they fly into the blades often. where is peta on that?

IF a person or company could build one wind turbine the size of a stop sign in the most remote, uninhabitable place on Earth that could generate and wireless deliver more power than all of humanity would ever need for a tenth the cost of today’s coal-fired Kilowatt Hour, the Greenies would demand it be shut it down. They’d accuse the provider of “Greed”, “Selfishness”, “Racism” (trust me) and still find a way to claim it was destroying the planet. Greenies don’t give a Rip about the “environment”. What they care about is the destruction of capitalism. Especially American Capitalism.

Posted on January 10, 2012 at 11:46amIt is finally becoming apparent to everyone that green power is a bad joke perpetrated on the American people by Al Gore and his lying band of phony scientists. Green power is a myth because of all the hidden costs associated with the wind turbines. The cost of building them and installing them is five times the amount reported by proponents. The costs involved in running them, is making them ineffective as a dependable source of energy. They have to have backup plants using coal, gas, oil, or any other means, like water in dams generating power. Obama and the EPA and all the other government agencies that regulate power are dead against providing newer and more efficient power plants like nuclear or any of the cleaner choices available. People have been lied to so often by the powers that be in government that they trust no-one anymore. We have enough oil and gas right here in this country to supply us for 300 years or more. The only problem we have is that Obama refuses to let the oil companies drill for it. They put obstacles in the way with lawsuits and presidential orders to stop drilling and closing areas off. This President has done everything possible to hurt our economy and drive us to the edge of fiscal collapse than it is possible to do in three short years. Now he wants more time in office to do more to destroy us. We know he hates whites and wants to destroy us all if he can. Obama must go. God Bless America.

Posted on January 10, 2012 at 11:45amWhen you take government subsidy out of wind, solar, etc., they collapse on the economics. The basic reason is not one of technology, but of scale. These methods collect energy that is too dilute to be competitive with fuel-based generation.
While government arguably has a role when there’s a technology hurdle in the way of implementing a type of energy source, such is not the case with wind & solar. So, government’s role has become one of pushing an energy agenda based on politics. In the end, this approach will fail.
