Report: High School Christmas Sweater Club May Have Been Overzealous

The controversy over a high school “Christmas Sweater club” punished for distributing candy canes has sparked national outcry, especially given the principal’s reported comments regarding Christmas. But now that controversy has taken another turn, as the school and some of its students offer conflicting views of what happened.
Some students claim the boys were out of control, and injuring others, while others contend they were spreading light and jovial Christmas cheer:
WUSA has been trying to get to the bottom of the story and issued a follow-up report:
What were the intentions of the boys in the Christmas Sweater Club at Battlefield High School? Were they innocent? Did their plan to hand out candy canes get out-of-hand? Whatever your opinion, sides have been taken and people are angry over what happened; or didn’t happen.
“I think the administration lost its holiday spirit,” said Heather Williams, a mother of the of the boys in the club.
The boys say they were just handing out or gently tossing two inch, wrapped candy canes as students arrived at Battlefield one morning. And several boys who were there back them up.
But Abdus Khan, a senior, saw something different. “They had candy canes and they were chucking them,” he said. Khan said he saw a few people who had red marks on their faces where the small candy canes had hit them.
A few postings on our Facebook page describe a similar chaotic, and unfriendly scene. Khan said he heard a few of the boys shouting “Merry f—— Christmas”.
The story, however, gained national attention not because a group of high schoolers dressed up and passed out candy canes, but rather because the principal’s reported comments seemed to show a bias against Christmas.
But since the school’s principal refuses to be interviewed, questions remain regarding her earlier, potentially disturbing, comments. In a previous story, parents quoted her as saying, “not everyone wants Christmas cheer. That suicide rates are up over Christmas, and that they should keep their cheer to themselves, perhaps.”

Posted on December 23, 2010 at 12:49pmThere was a time, in the far distant past, when a story like this would have been reported with the facts. Not the facts that fitted the reporters agenda, the plain truth of the matter. I fear that is long gone. Now one has to search for all the various reports from all the different points of view, to even come close to what actually happened.
Just in the comments here, we a racial aspect, and you can be sure that came from someone of color, as they see everything as racist.
There are the Islam angles, undoubtedly from a Muslim, they see a problem at every gathering that isn’t held in a Mosque.
And the old standby, the “Kill Christmas” crowd. Oh for the good old days when the story was about what happened, not what someone wished had happened.

Posted on December 23, 2010 at 12:42pm‘parents quoted her [the principal] as saying, “not everyone wants Christmas cheer. That suicide rates are up over Christmas, and that they should keep their cheer to themselves, perhaps.”’ Perhaps NOT! If you don’t want the cheer, don’t accept it – but you cannot decide for anyone else what is cheerful. You [the principal] should get another job where your training and judgment benefit others – perhaps at McDonalds.

Report Post »SeekerEmerald
Posted on December 23, 2010 at 12:27pmHas anyone considered how incredibly FAST those candy canes must have been thrown to be able to cause a red mark at any distance? Due to the design of the wrappers, they will slow down VERY quickly after the “release.” Had they NOT been in any wrappers at all, this MIGHT be possible, but they STILL would have to be thrown at a very high rate of speed.
This kid Khan saw “a few people” who had red marks? REALLY? a few??? Not just one, but a few?
He stood there long enough to watch, and then watched each of the “few” long enough to see the marks appear?
Where are these kids with the marks? Why did THEY not come forward? Since every kid has a cellphone, where are the pictures of these marks? Where is the video of this horrific scene where kids were using deadly candy canes as weapons? (perhaps the video is too graphic, and can’t be shared…)
Red marks?
I don’t beleive it.
Sounds like this kid just wanted to be on TV at best, or slam some Christians at worst…

Posted on December 23, 2010 at 12:21pmI can see both sides. The boys were pretty much all white, so by definition they are exploitive animals. They probably tossed candy to the white guys, chucked candy at the non-white guys, and used the candy to try to bribe the girls out of their, er, umm, Christmas cheer. Man, what a better world this would be if all those white men would go to Antartica or somewhere. Ya know?
But I stick with what I posted yesterday concerning the principal’s hypenated surname. If she can’t decide something as simple as which name to use, what is she doing leading the youth in the community? I would can her on that alone.

You would have to be pretty damn good to fire them with sufficient speed and accuracy to make marks on people’s faces. I think Abdus Kahn is lying, a little mini jihad against the Christians. I I was the reporter I’d have asked him what religion he was. Is that too un-PC?

Posted on December 23, 2010 at 2:42pmI posted on a related thread a number of days ago. I posted statistics about the community and the school itself, including a link to its profile. I was accused of being a race baitor, because I pointed to the percentage of Whites at the school and in the community. Khan is a Muslim name, but you find it among Afghanis, Pakistanis, and Indians. This school has a huge Asian population in relation to the U.S. as a whole. The school population is 13% Asian, I am sure if you wondered the halls, most of them would be Afghanis, Pakistanis, and Indians. I also questioned whether this wasn’t so much a chase of a fake “War on Christmas” as a bunch of middle class brats being caught being obnoxious. It would seem that I was probably right. And why I felt the need to post the White population head count is reflected in the very, very bigoted comments above.
