Report: Iran Revolutionary Guard Commander Killed in Explosion was Testing Intercontinental Missile

A cloud of black smoke rises after an explosion rocked a weapons depot in Iran Nov. 12, 2011. A senior commander killed in the blast was reportedly testing a missile, his brother said Saturday. (Image source: Fars News Agency)

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — A senior Iranian Revolutionary Guard commander killed in an explosion at an ammunition depot west of Tehran last week died while testing an intercontinental missile, his brother was quoted by a government newspaper as saying Saturday.

Mohammad Tehrani Moghaddam, himself a Guard officer, also said in an interview published Saturday that his brother Gen. Hasan Tehrani Moghaddam had founded the missile unit of the Lebanese Hezbollah group.

Gen. Moghaddam was killed together with 20 other Guard members Nov. 12 at a military site outside Bidganeh village, 25 miles southwest of Tehran. The Guard said the explosion was an accident and occurred while military personnel were transporting munitions.

But Mohammad Tehrani Moghaddam was quoted by the government-run Iran newspaper as saying that his brother was killed when the weapon exploded during testing. He did not dispute that the explosion was accidental.

“He lost his life while doing a final test of the missile,” Moghaddam said. “The project was in the final testing phase. It was related to an intercontinental ballistic missile … It was a completely high-tech, confidential process.”

These key quotes were left out of the text printed by the newspaper. They appeared on the paper’s website early Saturday, but were deleted later in the day.

The Guard has praised Moghaddam as the founder of the elite unit’s surface-to-surface missile capability.

In a statement released after the explosion, the Guard said it would not forget Moghaddam’s “effective role in the development of the country’s defense…and his efforts in launching and organizing the Guard’s artillery and missile units.”

Moghaddam headed a “self-sufficiency” unit of the Guard’s armaments section, it said.

In the interview, Mohammed Tehrani Moghaddam said that this brother had set up Hezbollah’s missile capability. “Hasan…visited Lebanon and created Hezbollah’s missile unit there,” he was quoted as saying.

Iran is a key supporter of Hezbollah and is believed to funnel it weapons and millions of dollars in funding, though Tehran denies arming the Shiite group. Hezbollah, also closely allied to Syria, boasts a heavy arsenal of rockets capable of reaching deep inside Israel.

The Revolutionary Guard, Iran’s most powerful military force, is in charge of Iran’s missile program.

Iran’s arsenal boasts missiles with a range of about 1,250 miles that were designed for Israeli and U.S. targets. The missile capability, along with Iran’s nuclear program, are among the reasons why Israel considers Iran its most dangerous enemy.

Moghaddam said his brother was also involved in Iran’s space program, assisting the rocket that took an Iranian satellite into orbit.

He didn‘t elaborate but said Hasan was favored by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Moghaddam himself was once Khamenei’s bodyguard.

The Guard initially said 17 Guard members were killed in the explosion. The semi-official Mehr news agency listed the names of 21 victims prompting the military force to say some of those critically injured had succumbed to their wounds later.

Keep not thou silence, O God: hold not thy peace, and be not still, O God. For, lo, thine enemies make a tumult: and they that hate thee have lifted up the head. They have taken crafty counsel against thy people, and consulted against thy hidden ones. They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance. For they have consulted together with one consent: they are confederate against thee: The tabernacles of Edom, and the Ishmaelites; of Moab, and the Hagarenes; Gebal, and Ammon, and Amalek; the Philistines with the inhabitants of Tyre; Assur also is joined with them: they have holpen the children of Lot. Selah.
Do unto them as unto the Midianites; as to Sisera, as to Jabin, at the brook of Kison: Which perished at Endor: they became as dung for the earth. Make their nobles like Oreb, and like Zeeb: yea, all their princes as Zebah, and as Zalmunna: Who said, Let us take to ourselves the houses of God in possession. O my God, make them like a wheel; as the stubble before the wind. As the fire burneth a wood, and as the flame setteth the mountains on fire; So persecute them with thy tempest, and make them afraid with thy storm. Fill their faces with shame; that they may seek thy name, O LORD. Let them be confounded and troubled for ever; yea, let them be put to shame, and perish: That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth. Psalm 83

Ahhhhh… Just how do you test an ICBM?
      Fire it?
And why was the test in the middle of a city?
Something more than a little weird here. I mean, it‘s not like they don’t have plenty of available desert.

Testing in a city is a ridiculous idea, but knowing Iranian style tactics it isn’t a surprise. One, you can theoretically conceal the excess heat off an engine test in the background heat of a city much more than if you were in the open desert (Depending on which satellite is watching). Second, it fits in with their usual tactics of building vital military targets in the middle of a city so that any attack will result in high civilian casualties, they do love their human shields. Still, it is very odd for them doing final testing for an ICBM in the middle of a populated area.

Yep. As I’ve said before, Iran is a joke. Iran is not able to militarily or technologically compete with any highly developed Nation. A nuclear weapon is much more difficult to actually use, then it is to make it. Look at North Korean and their many failed mini missile launch tests. These suicidal idiots are playing with fire, and they’re going to get burned. Sorry, but I find Freddy Kruger scarier than Iran. I will lose no sleep or run scared like a sissy because of Iran. Our collapsing economy and the immorality and ignorance of our youth is a bigger threat than Iran can ever impose.

The defense policy of the United States is based on a simple premise: The United States does not start fights. We will never be an aggressor. We maintain our strength in order to deter and defend against aggression – to preserve freedom and peace. – Reagan

America does not go abroad in search of monsters to destroy. She is the well-wisher to the freedom and independence of all. She well knows that by enlisting under other banners than her own, were they even the banners of foreign independence, she would involve herself beyond the power of extrication in all the wars of interest and intrigue, of individual avarice, envy and ambition, which assume the colors and usurp the standards of freedom. – JQ Adams

      Just my two cents.

I think we are seeing the beginnings of cyber warfare. If the Russians can fry an Illinois utilities water pump by hacking into its controls, the Israelis shouldn‘t have too much problem hacking into Iran’s missile system and caused them to self-destruct. I understand we already hacked into the Iranian computers that control their uranium enrichment plant and set them back couple years on that.
Google has the chutzpah to take on China and published many photos China would rather keep censored. It shouldn’t be any problem for the Israeli engineers at Google to handle Iran.

On the 17th, Debkafile is reported that the explosion may have been an Israeli covert operation.

“The two statements together aroused lively speculation in the tense climate left by the latest nuclear watchdog agency‘s evidence of Iran’s work on a nuclear weapon. Linking them might suggest that the Israeli prime minister had decided to refute the Iranian general’s claim. By stating that “efforts are ongoing” to stop Iran’s nuclear armament, he may have been implying that the explosion at the Guards base Saturday was indeed a covert Israeli operation in line with those efforts.”

    http://www.debka.com/article/21488/

And yesterday they raised the possibility that either it was an Israeli covert operation or the Stuxnet virus is responsible for the explosion.

    http://www.debka.com/article/21496/

I hope either and or are correct?
