Alleged movie theater gunman James Holmes mailed a notebook “full of details about how he was going to kill people” to a University of Colorado psychiatrist before the attack, but it sat unopened in a mail room until Monday, Fox News reported.
According to Fox, police and FBI agents were called to the University of Colorado Anschutz medical campus in Aurora on Monday after the psychiatrist said he received a package he thought was from Holmes. While that package turned out to be from someone else, a search of the mail room netted another package for the psychiatrist with Holmes’ name in the return address.
“Inside the package was a notebook full of details about how he was going to kill people,” a law enforcement source told Fox. “There were drawings of what he was going to do in it – drawings and illustrations of the massacre.”
According to Fox, “among the images shown in the spiral-bound notebook’s pages were gun-wielding stick figures blowing away other stick figures.”
One source said the package had been in the mail room since July 12, eight days before the shooting.
The notebook is now in FBI possession. The agency declined to comment on the matter, citing a gag order on the case.
According to Fox, the psychiatrist the package was meant for is a professor at the school who treated patients at a psychiatry outpatient facility. It was not clear whether the psychiatrist had ever had contact Holmes, who dropped out of the school’s neuroscience doctoral program last month.
Twelve people were killed and 58 others injured when Holmes allegedly opened fire during a midnight screening of the new Batman film, “The Dark Knight Rises.” Holmes appeared in court for the first time on Monday; charges against him are expected to be filed July 30.

Posted on July 29, 2012 at 12:13pmThis story never made sense from the beginning which is probably why the media pulled it for a few hours last Thursday so they could coordinate the “details.” At one point, they even tried to claim that it was James who had told them about it, claiming that he said he wanted it back because it was his property and would go against client/patient confidentiality. They, of course, had to scrap that story because it didn’t mesh with their “James hasn’t said a word” story.

Posted on July 25, 2012 at 5:06pmThe psychiatrist apparently thinks that there is some kind of ‘psychiatrist / client privilege’.
Report Post »Chet Hempstead
Posted on July 25, 2012 at 5:23pmActually, there is a psychiatrist patient privilege. A psychiatrist is a doctor and he can’t break privilege without a court order. But that has nothing to do with this case as far as we know. The psychiatrist called the cops, and we don’t even know if the killer was his patient.
Report Post »formidable_foe
Posted on July 25, 2012 at 5:54pmIf the psychiatrist never treated him, the psychiatrist could certainly say that. Regardless of whether the psychiatrist did or didn’t, Holmes sending the notebook is just further evidence of premeditation.
Report Post »SgtB
Posted on July 25, 2012 at 10:21pmActually, the doctor could have taken the murderer and put him in an asylum for treatment and rehabilitation or for his own protection. While the patient might have the right to confidentiality, the doctor has the responsibility to protect his patient, even from himself in some instances. IF he sent in a package detailing a mass murder that he wanted to commit, then that is good enough for this Libertarian to say the doctor can take him into medical custody under the auspices that the aforementioned is not of sound mind. The police are not necessary until after the event takes place and people are hurt or dead.
Report Post »formidable_foe
Posted on July 26, 2012 at 12:44am@SGTB,
Commiting someone is not as easy as you may think. The person must be found to be an active danger to self/others. Violent drawings in a notebook would not be enough grounds. Plans of an assault may not even cut it, depending on the timeline. The subject could testify in the commitment hearing that he made those drawings months or years ago and deny any CURRENT homicidal thoughts or plans. Then what? Every state is different, but even if you were able to commit him, you would have to continually justify keeping him. He may stay 2 or 3 days, then be discharged. Remember that someone who is truly psychotic can fool even the best psychiatrist. My gut feeling is that this guy is malingering.

Posted on July 25, 2012 at 3:24pmWhat? Psychiatry connected to another mass murder? Noooooo!? Who would have thought. Funny how mass murderers are always connected AFTER they see a psychiatrist. Oh well, we should have known after all the commercials for the meds warn of suicidal tendencies. If all he wanted to do was kill himself we’d all be better off. I think truth in advertising requires an inclusion of “may want to kill everyone but himself” to the label.

Posted on July 25, 2012 at 3:22pmNot sure how that could have been intentional for an insanity defense because if the doctor had
an employee who opened his mail and alerted him to anything that required immediate attention
(as many doctors do), this would have been discovered several DAYS before the shooting and
he would have been institutionalized. UNLESS the doc only is at the college on a certain day of
the week (Mon) for example and the chances were very calculated that he/she wouldn’t see it beforehand. Makes me wonder too if the mailroom had lots of people on vacation, only rookies/temp help and they didn’t know how to process the mail promptly and Holmes surmised this.
Guess we’ll never know.

One clue the first word. Alleged? are you serious Blaze. You mean to tell me you don’t have the balls to call it like it is. There is nothing alleged about it. Cut the crappy assed PC when it comes to writing stories about known guilty mass murderers. That is part of the problem with our society. No one wants to tell it like it is. He is the movie theater gunman and he is guilty.
Report Post »v15
Posted on July 25, 2012 at 4:09pmIt’s called “due process” and fortunately we have a legal system that extends rights to individuals so that they may be innocent until proven guilty. “Alleged” implies that no charges have been filed against him (They will on June 30th) and that he is being accused of the the shooting but it has yet to go to trial. Yes, there’s a 99.999999% chance that he committed that horrible massacre, but we have these laws to protect everyone’s rights. Read the constitution.

Typical, arm-chair-quarterback psychology from the media. How many people in America would say have ever drawn something similar? And, how many mass murders did those lead to???
I mean, if you step back and think about this for a minute, it isn’t rocket science. We have 315 million freakin’ people in this country. How many commit mass murder? Get my drift?
This type of thing is going to happen in a “free” society. And, it could very well happen in just about any type of society, really.

Posted on July 25, 2012 at 3:28pm1%? No way you can tell me 3.15 million “mass” murderers in this country at any particular point in time.
3.15? Maybe – which would be .00000001 percent of the American population, which essentially means it’s a non-issue for all intents and purposes.
I just think that given the fact half the people in this country can’t raise children properly, and another half doesn’t understand limited government and a multitude of others have issues that cause irrational thought processes – do we really need these types of people making decisions on “who” or “what” is psychotic???
