TRIPOLI, Libya (AP / THE BLAZE) — Libya declared an immediate cease-fire and promised to stop military operations Friday in a bid to fend off international military intervention after the U.N. authorized a no-fly zone and “all necessary measures” to prevent the regime from striking its own people.
But a Libyan rebel spokesman has dismissed the cease-fire announcement, claiming Moammar Gadhafi’s forces are still attacking key cities in the east and the west.
According to Reuters:
Twenty-five people, including several children, were killed during heavy bombardments by forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi on the western city of Misrata on Friday, a doctor in the city told Reuters.
The doctor and another resident said government tanks were still shelling the city, despite an earlier claim by rebels that the attack had been defeated.
“Gaddafi’s forces are bombing the city with artillery shells and tanks. We now have 25 people dead at the hospital, including several little girls,” the doctor said by satellite phone.
Mustafa Gheriani, a spokesman for the national opposition council based in Benghazi, says “no cease-fire.”
Gheriani says regime forces are shelling the eastern city of Ajdabiya and Misrata, the last rebel-held city in the western half of the country.
Western powers are racing to prevent more attacks after the U.N. Security Council passed a resolution setting the stage for airstrikes, a no-fly zone and other military measures short of a ground invasion.
Hillary Clinton said today that she was not impressed by Libya’s declaration of a ceasefire. Gadhafi, she said, must go. According to Reuters:
“We are going to be not responsive or impressed by words, we would have to see actions on the ground and that is not yet at all clear,” Clinton said to reporters after meeting with Ireland’s Deputy Prime Minister Eamon Gilmore.
“We will continue to work with our partners in the international community to press Gaddafi to leave and to support the legitimate aspirations of the Libyan people,” she said.
Libya said it would halt military operations and comply with the U.N. resolution after the United Nations authorized a no-fly zone and attacks on forces loyal to Gaddafi.
Clinton said the U.N. resolution was only one step and the international community would continue to consider options.
“While this resolution is an important step, it is only that, an important step,” she said.
“We and our partners will continue to explore the most effective measures to end this crisis,” Clinton said.
Libyan protesters were initially elated at the news of the ceasefire. For a moment, no longer fearing a massacre at Gadhafi’s hands, they celebrated:

Posted on March 19, 2011 at 2:24pmThat “Hopeless” poster is priceless of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. The American “Hopeless” poster of President Obama is the sign of other leaders who are taking to much power OVER the people. Down with these dictators. All they do is take and will not make better lives for the respected peoples.

Posted on March 18, 2011 at 8:14pmThis is just like the reporting that came out of Egypt. We DO NOT know who is doing the shooting. In Egypt it was REPORTED that they were supporters of Mubarak…now it is supporters of Gadhafi. Remember, in all these places we have 3 different groups…the government, the people, and then the THUGS who went in to start a revolution. Gadhafi is evil, but does his claim that al-Quaeda has infiltrated and is destroying his country have any truth to it? The radicals are the ones who are moving country to country and trying to oust the existing leaders that do not ‘GO ALONG with New World Order”. obama MUST get Gadhafi out because Gadhafi will not ‘toe the mark’ and will not let the Islamic extremest take over Libya…same as with Egypt’s Mubarak.
Also…has any one seen mecheeele doing any public announcement spots asking for help for Japan? She did a lot for Haiti…but then again, the Japanese do not fit into the plan either.

Posted on March 18, 2011 at 3:11pmLadies and Gentlemen, THIS IS A TRAP!
“But a Libyan rebel spokesman has dismissed the cease-fire announcement, claiming Moammar Gadhafi’s forces are still attacking key cities in the east and the west.”
He can lie to the world that he has order a “cease-fire” but the KILLING has not stopped. We must not play into his hands. Rescue the innocent people, provide cover as they escape Libya. Shout back when fired upon, but DO NOT engage these Radical Muslim Terrorist. This crazy man wants us to go to WAR with the United States! He needs to draw us into a religious confrontation to energize every Muslim in the that part of the world.
THIS IS A WARNING for everyone to hear – When the United States starts bombing Libya, ALL of the Muslims will join together and bring the FIGHT to US!
Commander Gates has tried to warn us about the consequences and what is involved in a NO-FLY ZONE. Any military person knows how the enemy thinks and operates. However, our President Barrack Hussein Obama has NO military experience what so ever! Unless you count his time spent with SEIU and union operatives at the White House.

Posted on March 18, 2011 at 2:22pmGo get em Gadhafi. I would like to see one thing. Gadhafi with fingers of both hands telling Obama to shove them where he cannot see them. Gadhafi is no more threat to the US as was Hussein in Iraq. The US is past its prime and is on a down hill slide. The muscles it flexes today mean nothing. There is no head to direct the muscles. Obama is an empty shell, a marionette puppet if you will. If the people in Libya want freedom they must fight for it themselves. They cannot depend on the United Nations. The only the no fly zone passed is all the other nations who voted for it mean for the US to do it. Russia and China the super power abstained. Does that tell you something? Leaders of both nations know Obama is an empty shirt. Just facts folks.

Posted on March 18, 2011 at 1:59pmWhy would we risk anything to support this rebel force that appears to be backed by Iran?
What is going on in Libya is wrong but who is to say that our intervention does not lead to even more blood shed. Egypt has taught us that it only takes a handful of violent protesters to over throw a government and eventually run it.
It looks like the other heads of state are following Gaddafi’s lead. If it is truly a people’s backed overthrow it will succeed. If it is a handful of insurgents trying to capture oil wealth for Al Qaeda then interfering could lead to even more blood being spilled.
The truth of who is backing this insurgency is being hid from the general public deliberately.

Posted on March 18, 2011 at 1:09pmLibya wins another victory over free enterprise, capitalism and democracy! They thinned out a few dissenters while the heads of England, France and Uniter States “made the usual threats” but once again, they picked their NCAA tournament champs and were at a loss as to what to do – what a way to fight a war! So congratulations Gaddafi, return to your throne! You pulled off the Lockerbie bombing, survived Reagan tent targeted bomb and now you’ll be free to conduct trade with the United States of America. Alhamdulillah!

Posted on March 18, 2011 at 12:48pmCheck this with Beck‘s show about the govt trying to change Quaddafi’s image around the world. No-fly-zone threatened so now Gaddafi wants to talk to the rebels (the heart part right lol), then Kaddaphi will make concessions of CHANGE with “his” people, then the world will applaud Cudafi’s sensibility, and say “Gee that Guddophi is not such a bad guy”, then Momar is gonna appoint his son SAIF as supreme ruler of Libya and the atrocities will continue under SAFE’s rule for the next 30+ years. Mission accomplished Obomba!

Posted on March 18, 2011 at 12:42pmGod help us and the world if leaders are stupid enough to buy off on that. Gadhafi has defeated the rebels all but one town. He figures he can squeeze a slow death of them at this point, no need to blatantly kill them. I do see a similiarity between Gadhafi and Obama. Too little too late.

Posted on March 18, 2011 at 11:54amAgain, the world just can‘t mind it’s own business. We would not want other nations coming in and supporting insurrection in our countries, yet we are willing to go in, guns a blazing for what ? And that’s just it, nothing. let them settle this dispute themselves. Every nation has the right to put down rebellion, and every people within it’s own nation has the right to rebel. All others have no right at all. Stay out of Libya.
That being said. Libya, has done good to call a cease fire, yet continue to attack the rebels. The cease fire is the exact card he needs right now. If any outside nation attacks Libya now after a declaration of cease fire, the entire nation will side with Gaddafi and put down the rebellion themselves. Gaddafi must be laughing right now. When it’s all done, he will still be ruling Libya and the rest of the world will look like bumbling idiots.

When we go into a nation the first thing we do is install our puppet government. Not one of these nations we oppose fit the program of a global government. This is why one oppressive governments who play the game(such as Saudi Arabia) are our buddies, while the same basic scenario in these target nations(Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, etc…) are painted as a world crisis. What is left to gain when the richest people already have all of the money? You don’t play Monopoly to simply pass go and collect $200 and sit on it. This is the real world game of Monopoly paid for by many lost lives happening all around us!

All that sorry *&^%$#@ had to do is take some kind of action, ANYTHING, and that madman would have stopped shooting at people. I know it’s the UN not Obama. But if Obama had stopped doing his Erkel empression out on the golf coarse, and put as much thought into this Gaddafi mess as he does college basketball, it would have saved lives just by threatening Gaddafi. They have waited so long now that freak boy has the upper hand and it will be harder to deal with and more costly in US and Libyan lives and money. Thanks for nothing Erkel!
