A 61-year-old man collapsed and later died while doing some Black Friday shopping in West Virginia, yet nearby bargain hunters continued to shop, some even stepping over his body, according to local reports.
Walter Vance collapsed in Target just after midnight Friday, local station WSAZ-TV reported. One witness told the station fellow shoppers, seemingly unconcerned, simply walked around him.
An ER nurse and an off-duty paramedic who happened to be among the crowd eventually assisted Vance and tried to administer CPR before an ambulance arrived. He died later in the hospital.
Vance, a pharmacist, had reportedly had heart problems for years, though did not complain of any pain beforehand. He had gone to Target shop for Christmas decorations.
“Where is the good Samaritan side of people?” his co-worker and friend Sue Compton told WSAZ. “How could you not notice someone was in trouble? I just don‘t understand if people didn’t help what their reason was, other than greed because of a sale.”
But despite those reports, Vance’s wife told the Charleston Gazette that at least several other people, including more nurses, did try to help her husband: In addition to CPR, one woman fished Vance’s cell phone out of his pocket to call his wife and tell her what had happened.
Target has not yet responded to media inquiries about Vance’s death.

Posted on November 28, 2011 at 9:09amWe are truly near the end times when mankind no longer has feelings for their fellow man. I feel so sad when I see madness in what is supposed to be love and a celebration of life through our Lord Jesus Christ and it seems that love has left the building. Men and woman are dying around the world to protect a country like this. Shame on all of you who have lost the real reason for life for living for a few pieces of gold. You will have to account for you deeds one day. Enjoy your day! God Bless all of you who still have the love of God in your heart.

Posted on November 28, 2011 at 7:05pmPlease look at it from both sides. If the regular people stopped to help and he still died, they have opened themselves up for a law suit to lose every thing they have. Why no one stopped is beyond my comprehension, but to help my fellow man these days is with great risk.
I will end on this note, leave a man to die to save $1.00 on a pair of socks, we may be at the lowest we have ever been as a society. May god help us all.

Posted on November 27, 2011 at 4:06amGrammar errors aside, I agree with you…. folks that shop like it’s a full contact sport are just plain nuts. They fight over the last of some electronic babysitter that their brat has to have or won’t be as complete for some imagined reason. I don’t shop at all at these door buster shopping days at the big box stores. I usually don’t shop in the big box places any time because they have fundamentally destroyed Downtown, America. I might be a bit sentimental because I remember taking my ten or twenty bucks and going from store to store downtown to find a present for my Mom and Dad and going through the Sears, Montgomery Ward‘s and JCPenny’s Christmas catalog for weeks before Christmas circling all the things I wish I could have and dreaming about what I might get. Those were the days. It was busy downtown during the last weeks before Christmas but nobody was fighting over the last of some stupid toy that the marketers convinced people their kid had to have or would not be a whole person anymore. At worst there might have been a few horns honked over a parking spot. To be honest, the way the season is marketed these days and the P.C. crap that stores do now, it’s not even something I look forward to anymore. Especially when everything that is for sale was made by Chinese slaves instead of hard working, quality oriented, American manufacturers. The spirit of the season is definitely gone when people act the way they do today.. It’s sad.

@theburningtruth:
Report Post »I would not call them stupid but it does show a highly developed lack of common sense for these things. While flatbroke did not say it very eloquently and was a little too harsh on these people, he was fundamentally correct. Anyone that ever mentions to me and complains to me about the financial situation that we are in, the first thing I would do is ask them what they did on Black Friday and what they bought. We all have the right to buy whatever we wish with the money that we have but if they are going to go out and basically buy (for the most part) JUNK and then complain about not having any money because of the government or anyone else means that I would have to do my best not to laugh in their face. And if I couldn’t hold it back and did laugh, they would deserve it. I would also have to tell them to go back to their group of highly intelligent friends at OWS so that they can sit around and cry together while lying about being the 99% when they are more like the average level of their IQ’s which would put them around 15 1/2.

Posted on November 27, 2011 at 5:04amI doubt the reporting in this story. It looks like manufactured story line. It appears to be designed to be startling. People did help; others, those without skills, reported to the store or 911. There is nothing in the article about that, so we can’t know it happened, but the reporter doesn’t know it either. This is plot journalism, not reporting. I hope this gentleman’s family is not subjected to this story.

My experience has been if someone tells me they are “a good christian” they are the first to con you, stab you in the back, or steal your wallet. My sister working at a resturant in NC during sunday morning/afternoon would always tell horrid stories of bad manners, & rude behavior by these so-called christians. Posted on November 26, 2011 at 2:31pmIndeed, and here in Phoenix we had a grandfather trying to help up his grandson who had been shoved to the floor by other shoppers; the security/police body slammed the man to the ground and have arrested him on grounds of “shoplifting” a vidoe game, and trying to help out the kid.

Posted on November 26, 2011 at 8:09pmExcellent idea and perfectly timed. You never know what the smallest kindness can do for someone. Even a smile with a wish for a wonderful day can help if it’s sincerely given. If we’re blessed with a little extra cash we could pay for coffee for the person in line behind us or in the fast food drive-through, etc., but it doesn’t have to be about money. Thanks for the reminder.

Posted on November 26, 2011 at 2:44pmWhat an odd comment. Black Friday has nothing to do with Christianity. The only comment related to Christianity was his co-worker’s comment about the Good Samaritan. This news story reflects the absence of a moral conscience – something Americans used to have before atheists started molding us into a materialistic secular society.

My favorite idiot troll. How the heck are you, your curmudgeon?
When I read this story I though about the 2 year old girl who got ran over twice in China & ignored by over a dozen people. Those people weren’t Christian. I was going to point out that different day & different ethnic group but same human indifference (psychology).
But then you show up literally spouting crap. I don’t think mouth wash will help you. You are to far gone for it to work. Have you consider the fine, fine Islamic country of Pakistan? a country where Sunnis would roll into a Shia mosque during Friday prays. This is all pre-911 mind you. A country where the tiny Christina minority live in ghettos & have to sell kidneys to make ends meet. This is just one of the many Islamic countries that treat their fellow man in a similar fashion. You should move there!
