Report: Mitch Daniels ‘Would Like to Run’ for Prez, Just Waiting on Wife’s OK

Jon Ward of The Huffington Post has the story:
Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels wants to run for president and is not in the process of convincing himself to do it, a close adviser said. The last hurdle remaining is ongoing discussions between him and his wife, Cheri Daniels, over whether she is ready to face questions about their past.
“I think he would like to do it,” the Daniels adviser told The Huffington Post by phone. “I actually think he’d have a decent chance of getting the nomination.”
The issue that Daniels and his wife are discussing has to do with their familial past:
The confirmation that the Daniels’ marriage is the last hurdle in front of a bid for the White House highlights the delicate situation in which the Governor finds himself.
In 1993, Cheri Daniels left her husband with their four daughters and married another man in California. She returned a few years later, reconciled with Daniels, and the two were remarried in 1997. That is, in a nutshell, the story. The national press first picked up on it last year when it was buried at the bottom of an 8,600-word Weekly Standard profile.
But much is unknown. Why did she leave Daniels? Why did she come back? That she would be reluctant to publicly answer such delicate questions in front of the nation seems only natural.
A senior Republican official who worked in the Reagan White House said that “quite understandably, that’s a difficult chapter in your life, and whether you’d want to talk about that, if only for a few times, it’d be something you’d have to talk about.”
For more on Daniels, check out this profile of him from The Weekly Standard, where he said that the next Republican president will have to call a truce on the social issues.

Posted on May 9, 2011 at 8:48pmIt’s damn hard on the family for anyone whose President. Sorry – I’m as much a male as anyone – but if my wife said no – I would not run either. Marriage is a partnership – and both partners have to agree on such monumental issues – like kids, running for office, etc. Running for office is opening EVERYONE – including friends and associates as well as family – to the constant buzzard attack by the press and anyone who opposes you. I could notrun – I’d piss the press off too much – especially when I shoved that microphone up where the sun don’t shine. Daniels should not blame his wife though – you don’t go to an exploratory committee if the wife and family are not on board. So sounds like a woosey-out that he won’t have an easy time so he does not want to play!

Mitch is a man of conviction and he doesn’t bend or bow to the left. He is no RINO! Indiana also has past some very pro life legislation the last few years. And you are going to call him a RINO? Get a friggin clue before you throw you stamp on this guy. He is probably our best chance to win. I have NO idea why Rush is so against him. Maybe because he thinks the dems can expose his family issues? That is no reason at all not to support the guy. Posted on May 9, 2011 at 9:13pmHis very own words??? What words?
The question is electability. The *insert any candidate here* will be electable if they can communicate the conservative message to the electorate. They also need to explain why it is the best policy for everyone, well everyone without their hand out.
Can he do it? Not only CAN he, but he has. His record his rock solid and he is rock solid conservative. Screw Rush in this case. The reason I heard Rush repeat over and over is “the liberals are trying to pick Daniels and we can’t have liberals picking our candidate.” I agree with Rush 99% of the time but something really stinks here. Daniels is no McCain. When the left says things like “Daniels is going to bring gravitas to the debate” they are simply trying to compliment him into taking on Obama head on. It doesn’t mean that Daniels is going to choose that route.
The other hurdle any conservative candidate has to get though is the liberal media buzzsaw. They will try to trip you up with: being stupid, being wimpy, not being a good speaker, not being well read, being too lofty, pigeon hole you into the corner with politically divisive issues such as abortion, gay rights or the environment. We have a few strong black candidates but don’t think that the media will treat these guys with kid gloves, quite the opposite. The rules are different for conserv vs. lib.

Its not that Mitch Daniels isn’t Conservative enough. Mitch Daniels is a very good fiscal Conservative. No, Rush is angry because of what Mitch Daniels said during his CPAC speech.
And I quote………….‘We will need people who never tune in to Rush or Glenn or Laura or Sean, who surf past C-SPAN to get to SportsCenter.’
Rush Limbaugh took that statement as a swipe or a “diss” against him. When in fact, all Mitch Daniels was saying is that to gain power to effect change, you have to build a coalition of Conservative Republicans AND Conservative leaning democrats AND independents, just like Ronald Reagan did.
I like Rush and try to listen to him every day. On this, Rush is acting as a child who had his feelings hurt.

He just passed education reform where teachers are held accountable, made it illegal to have abortions after 20 weeks unless a rape or incest situation, brought us to a $1B surplus, and stremlined gov’t entities. I am very proud that he is my governor and hope he runs for president. He has done more for our state than any of the candidates running so far. I think that Obama and the left are playing Rush Limbaugh like a well tuned violin. Knowing that if they appear to “like” Daniels, the reaction from Rush is what they expected……no support for the strongest Conservative because Obama likes him. Obama (with the help of Rush Limbaugh) then effectively marginalizes one of the better GOP candidates in 2012.

Posted on May 10, 2011 at 4:54pmI agree with people who are pointing out that people from outside of Indiana telling people from inside of Indiana what he is like. There are a few things I haven’t seen brought up on here yet. 1) Check out the deal he made on the Indiana Toll Road that he leased to an overseas company. This is amazing because he took something that lost money for the state every year and managed to get a private company to come in and lease it from us thus making us money for a change. 2) He has extensive foreign policy experience as he travels overseas to persuade them to invest in Indiana. This is how he has gotten our unemployment levels down. Not only that but the jobs he is bringing here are good paying technical jobs. And finally, for those who don’t think he has a spine, a few weeks ago when our democrats ran to Illinois as well, he pointed out that they had a job to do back here in Indiana instead of legislating from the Hot Tub. He doesn’t have a problem calling dems out on issues…he just doesn’t feel the need to rant and rave and have bumper sticker slogan speeches. If there was one thing that the media truly responded to at his CPAC speech it was simply that. He gives speeches the way Reagan did…he engages his audience with a calm demeanor and a good sense of humor.

Posted on May 13, 2011 at 1:53amKILLKEE AND BLUEGOLD NATION, I am straightup republican, have been all my life, both of you must have those really good Union jobs or work directly for the GOVERNOR. I would not recommend him for President because he is too interested in being friends with China. Pull your blinders off and look at all the trips he took to China and other foreign countries. He outsources everything, he does not focus on Indiana or USA products, or business. He claims to bring in business for Indiana, what he really is doing is letting others do business in Indiana. You are both the liberals, if you really think he is building Indiana businesses. Stand down, take a seat, watch the race from the sidelines, and quit sucking up to the same person that has helped more businesses close, than open. He would outsource the USA if given the chance and we do not need anymore NAFTA or FREETRADE…..
