Report Claims: New Middle East Turns Away From Jihad, Terrorism

According to an interesting report in the Wall Street Journal, Osama bin Laden–and his breed of Islamic fundamentalism–is becoming increasingly irrelevant in the new Middle East.
That new Middle East is being shaped by pro-democracy movements “in which al Qaeda has played no role,” the Journal reports:
Bin Laden hadn’t been seen since his last video address was released in 2007. He died without commenting on the collapse of U.S.-allied regimes that al Qaeda tried and failed to demolish with violence.
Despite bin Laden’s attempts to jump-start a global Islamic revolution with the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, in the end Afghanistan’s ultra-conservative Taliban regime was the only government his movement actually managed to bring down, by sparking a U.S.-led invasion.
Pro-American governments in Egypt and Tunisia fell this year at the hands of a new generation of peaceful protesters. They demanded democracy, human rights and social justice, not the return to puritan Islamic rule espoused by bin Laden.
And while some Islamists continue to take bin Laden’s message to heart, other Muslims have grown disheartened by it:
But al Qaeda’s indiscriminate attacks on civilians in places such as Jordan and in war-torn Iraq alienated many Muslims, who were repelled by the disregard for fellow Muslims’ lives.
Saudi Arabia intensified its efforts to discredit al Qaeda after a wave of terrorist bombings in Riyadh in 2003.

Posted on May 2, 2011 at 10:49pmTotally disagree with the WSJ’s opinion of what it believe is going on in north africa and the middle east. The question is who is behind all this sweeping change? Iran and Turkey aren’t members of the arab league, and closer ties between Iran, Russia, and Turkey is an alliance to be reckoned with. Egypt is going to be an Islamic state, and who really knows what going to evolve in Libya,Syria, or Yemen. If and when we leave Afghanistan and Iraq there’s little chance for any democracy.

Posted on May 2, 2011 at 11:02pmMom,
You are mostly correct and it is true the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) is the more dangerous foe. The fragmented and de-centralized nature of groups like and including Al-Qeada makes them dangerous for their cellular nature, but limits the scope of their possible activities and funding. MB on the other hand has a huge scope with well-established and funded longevity and a long-term outlook on their activities coupled with perceived legitimacy within the region. The MB has achieved grassroots populism through providing social services that Arab governments do not traditionally engage in (same with Hamas and Hezbolah as well), causing them to be more trusted then the government because they are the ones caring for grandma and the orphans. The MB has organizations in nearly all Arab states and have similar views to all the other taqfiri groups ( Islamist, Radical Islamic groups, etc.) but has a veneer of respectability that apologists use to cover for their long term goals (which the goals are the same as taqfiri groups). Taqfiri in Arabic refers to a doctrine that makes all Muslims the same as infidels if they do not agree with you by saying they were never Muslims in the first place, so like infidels you can do anything to them lawfully without repercussions according to this version of Chaos Theory. This is the true enemy that is represented as terrorism. This explains why when they attack the west it is considered a just act to murder children and civilians, and when counter-terrorism reacts they are angered by what they see as an unprovoked assault. I hope this helps with understanding the cognitive dissonance that occurs with dealing with these groups or dealing with their motives.

Really? The muslim brotherhood had nothing to do with any of this! Surely not. Sharia Law is wonderful. The majority of Egyptians approve and embrace it. That’s peaceful? That would encourage democracy? If folks in other countries don’t want democracy – fine. Their country – their business. Just please stop lying about it. A majority of Americans equate “democracy” with our country & our form of government so they think it’s great for everyone. (We do not live in a democracy!) A true democracy is true anarchy. It hasn’t, can’t, and won’t work for any period of time. So when things get really bad the people will look for “law & order.” Lucky for them the brotherhood or a similar well organized group will be ready, willing and able to “save” them.

Revelation 6:7-8 “And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see.“ ”And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.”

CATB, you nailed it. Their modus operandi is changing, that’s it. All we’ve done is make them change their tactics.
————————————————-
Their tactics are reminiscent of the 60′ radicals in this country. Many of them, the ones that lived through the drug overdosing, eventually figured out that the only way they could make change is from within. The College students of the 70′s started to work their way through the process of becoming part of the government, instead of always being on the outside looking in, they could work from within the halls of government. We are now experiencing that movement, and we can tell the world that it sucks. Glenn Beck was also right about this. Our radicals are working with Muslim radicals because both groups hate us.
The bottom line for me is… I still don’t trust most mid-east nations. They have a lot of proving to do!

Posted on May 3, 2011 at 10:13amThe real answer to end terrorism is to get out of the middle east all together. We are breeding more and more terrorists each day we are there. Put yourself in their shoes, what if China was occupying our lands and was wageing war against our local militia groups? What if they accidently killed a couple of innocent American civilians occasionally? What if it was your children? What if they posted pictures up of them poseing with their dead bodies? Would you not want to become a “freedom fighter” and get revenge? Good/bad, freedom-fighter/terrorist are simply a matter of perception. It all depends on which side you are on. We are all rational human beings so lets think rationally instead of jumping up and acting like savage animals. I see the constant hatred for muslim people yet branding them ALL terrorist and degrading the race as a whole is like saying all Americans want to wage war and occupy foriegn lands and nation build simply because our politicains do. They are not a representation of the American people anymore. I believe most Americans want to worry about Americas problems and stop getting in everyone elses business. If not we will fall like every empire in the past. We’ve followed the exact footprints of Empires step for step. They all collapsed internally not through battle. We are on the precubice now and if we dont change drastically we will be a echo in the pages of history as the nation that used to be great
