Report: Obama’s Bus-Tour ‘Greyhound One’ Made in Canada

They say that perception is important, especially in politics. So even though Obama’s new, tricked-out bus for his three-day, Midwest bus tour was purchased through a U.S. retailer, the fact that it was made in Canada will surely raise some eyebrows.
Rumors started swirling this week on blogs and in comment sections that Obama’s bus — nicknamed “Greyhound One” — was not American-made, which is ironic considering part of the president’s goal on the tour has been to talk about jobs and getting Americans back to work. The New York Post reveals the large vehicles were originally built in Canada by luxury bus-maker Prevost:
President Obama is barnstorming the heartland to boost US jobs in a taxpayer-financed luxury bus the government had custom built — in Canada, The Post has learned.
The $1.1 million vehicle, one of two that Quebec-based Prevost sold the government, has been tricked out by the Secret Service with state-of-the-art security features and creature comforts.
It’s a VIP H3-45 model, the company’s top of the line, and is used by major traveling rock bands.
“That’s the more luxurious model,” Christine Garant of Prevost told The Post.
The luxury liner apparently has electronic equipment allowing him to communicate worldwide, armored doors, flat-screen TVs, and comfy couches. But while it has a bathroom, it doesn’t have a sleeping area.
Despite being made in Canada, the Post says, the Government purchased the bus (plus an additional one) for $2.2 million from retailer Hemphill Brothers Coach, based in Tennessee.
Still, the contract allegedly made clear where the buses were made: “The contract lists the country of origin as Canada and place of manufacture as ”outside U.S. – Trade Agreements,” a possible reference to the North American Free Trade Agreement.”
So, should the president be blasted for buying buses not made in America? During times of fiscal restraint, it could be that the government got the best deal by buying foreign buses, so we can’t say for sure. But then again, perception is everything.

HOWEVER, I do have a HUGE problem with this bus tour. This is a campaign bus. Plain and simple. He is using our money to campaign! There is no big message other than “don’t blame me, blame them” tour. They purposely made the bus black and nondescript, omitting campaign signage on it so that they could use your tax dollars. Also, look at the podium he uses. They carted out the presidential seal podium so again, he could campaign under the guise of “doing his job”. This is absurd. Nobody in the media is calling him out on this. Could you imagine if Bush did the same?? Just one look at his itinerary, and you would aware beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is campaigning. Change the aesthetics a little, and SHAZAM! It’s not a campaign!!….and here mr. taxpayer, I care so much about you, our deficits, and your jobs, that I’m going to go blow millions of your precious tax dollars to get a leg up in this presidential competition…because I care of course.

There are American companies which make tour busses every day. They provide luxury coaches for music stars, NASCAR drivers and owners and a host of other people. Using one made in Canada is a slap in the face to American workers.
Another thought, this was billed as an impromptu tour by the president. HOGWASH!!!! It took many weeks to outfit this rig with the communications equipment, security devices and other equipment needed. No way was this a “Spur of the moment” trip. It was planned months in advance. Again, this shows the hypocracy of Obama administration and his supporters in the Democratic party.

No there are not. As a staunch conservative and tour bus company owner, we conservatives need to be careful to not fall for the MSM rhetoric. There is no such thing as a 100% American-made tour bus. Prevost is among the 4 major over the road tour bus manufacturers that make up 99% of the American market. Prevost, by far, has the lion’s share of the market for coach conversions for a number of reasons. Your country stars and NASCAR teams are running the same brand of bus (Prevost) because it happens to be the best for this type of operation. In fact, Hemphill brothers (who sold the bus to the govt) leases their buses to many of the traveling bands for their tours. Of the 4 major tour bus manufacturers that serve America, MCI is the only partially built American bus. It is a half breed, made partially in Canada and finished in the USA. The other 2 majors are built in Europe.
Let’s be careful about falling into the trap the liberals are guilty of most of the time. Knee-jerk reactions without full knowledge of the subject is not helping our cause in any way.
Personally, I wish The Blaze would have researched this article a little better before spouting off on something without full knowledge like the liberals do so often.

Fact of the matter is manufacturing here and outside the US often mirrors what you laid out: A piece from here, a piece from over there, assembled here, using tools from over there, etc, etc…

Before America lost the majority of its manufacturing ability, an entire unit such as this would have been assembled from parts made in America and assembled in America. That is where the true tragedy is.

The bus was purchased in 2008 by the Secret Service, who operate a fleet of protective vehicles for not just the President. They used to rent special buses and specially outfit them with protective equipment.
They rented Rock Star buses for McCain and Palin at $11,000.00 a month in 2008, and spent another 50,000.00 on security and communications kits that had to be installed and removed.
A Secret Service spokesman said, if these $1.1M Bus last ten years, the investment will pay for itself.

If an elected national person flies home to campaign-fund raise that trip and all costs must be born by the individual.
If a President must campaign to get re elected for a second term, (ear marks and pork barrel spending) than that individual is not worthy of re election. Pay your own way, includes all previous Presidents, Representatives, Senators.

I know for a fact that there are several American manufacturers who could have built this cruiser. Yeah the ‘broker’ was here, but the actual money for the purchase, minus the ‘brokers’ fees, went to C-eh-N-eh-D-eh!!!

Cast your eyes on Him and do not dwell on things of this world. Just be glad you do not live during the time of the Roman persecutions. Be happy you do not live during the time of the inquisition. Be grateful you do not live in one of the persecuted countries today. We are lucky that the free church can worship today, in this country, as Scripture dictates. Is it getting worse? Sure it is, we are told this in the Bible. But be secure in your faith and enjoy the fireworks. He is all that matters.
And remember…It is the persecuted church that always grows. It is time Christians in the US woke up and turned towards their Savior and started taking their faith seriously.

If the candidates (any of them, including the prez) want to campaign in a special bus then let them or their party or their PAC pay for the thing – including any retro-fit the secret service recommends. Why should the taxpayers pay for someone’s election campaign? The government isn’t forcing them to run for office. The campaigns can always use those buses again for the next candidate. Or sell them.
And this IS a campaign tour for the prez, no matter what else they try to call it. But off hand, I can’t think of any other time a sitting president traveled by bus.
I’m not opposed to secret service protection for the candidates. I do not want anyone injured or killed because they are running for office but I think there should be limits as to what costs the taxpayers have to pay for that protection. And any costs over & above should be paid for by the campaign.
I feel the same way about members of congress using military planes, government jets etc when they want to visit their home districts or just go home period. Unless they are traveling by direct order of the government, why do I have to pay for it? They willingly put themselves in office. If they want their personal travel expenses as a “perk” of their employment, I don’t have a problem paying them 30 cents a mile or whatever the average going rate is.
And I’d still like that bus in October please! LOL :D
