ISLAMABAD (AP) — Intercepted militant radio communications indicate the leader of the Pakistani Taliban may have been killed in a recent U.S. drone strike, Pakistani intelligence officials said Sunday. A Taliban official denied that.
The report coincided with sectarian violence – a bomb blast in eastern Pakistan that killed 14 people in a Shiite religious procession.
The claim that the Pakistani Taliban chief was killed came from officials who said they intercepted a number of Taliban radio conversations. In about a half a dozen intercepts, the militants discussed whether their chief, Hakimullah Mehsud, was killed on Jan. 12 in the North Waziristan tribal area. Some militants confirmed Mehsud was dead, and one criticized others for talking about the issue over the radio.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to reporters.
Pakistani Taliban spokesman Asimullah Mehsud denied the group’s leader was killed and said he was not in the area where the drone strike occurred.
In early 2010, both Pakistani and American officials said they believed a missile strike had killed Hakimullah Mehsud along the border of North and South Waziristan. They were proved wrong when videos appeared showing him still alive.
The Pakistani Taliban is linked to attacks against U.S. targets. They trained the Pakistani-American who tried to detonate a car bomb in New York City’s Times Square in 2010 and is tied to a suicide bombing that killed seven CIA agents at an Afghan base in 2009.
There was no claim of responsibility for Sunday’s bombing that killed 14 people during a Shiite observance in Punjab province in the east – the latest of a series of sectarian attacks in volatile Pakistan.
Hundreds of Pakistani Shiites gathered in the town of Khanpur in Punjab province for a traditional procession to mark the end of 40 days of mourning following the anniversary of the death of Imam Hussein, a revered seventh-century figure.
The explosion went off as the mourners left a mosque, said District Police Chief Sohail Chatta. The bomb appeared to have been planted ahead of time in the path of the procession, he said.
The Pakistani Taliban and other Sunni extremist groups have in the past claimed responsibility for the bombings of Shiite religious sites and ceremonies. Many Sunni extremists in Pakistan regard Shiites as heretics.
The Taliban and other groups have carried out hundreds of bombings over the last five years that have killed thousands of Pakistani troops and civilians as part of a campaign to install a hard-line Islamist government.
The attacks are so common that the country’s interior minister in December actually thanked the Taliban for acting on what he said was a “request” not to stage attacks during the Shiite rituals of Ashoura that month.
Punjab law minister Rana Sanaullah said police investigators were still examining the area of Sunday’s bombing for clues. Security was provided for the procession, but it was breached, Sanaullah said.
The continuing strikes by presumed religious extremists come during a political crisis that pits the Pakistani civilian government against the military, sparking rumors of an impending coup.
Last week the military warned the government of possible “grievous consequences” ahead, and President Asif Ali Zardari took a one-day trip to Dubai that renewed speculation that he might flee the country.
Analysts say the military may be looking for the Supreme Court to push out Zardari rather than risk an outright takeover.

To give Bush credit, he did neutralize the one military counterbalance to Iran in the region, and so now there is no check to their influence, and Iraq is now a new breeding ground for Iranian promoted terrorism. But at least they’re a democracy and no longer have WMDs.
The fake birth certificate issued by the state of Hawaii is meaningless and has fooled no one because we know he born in Kenya, or somewhere besides the United States anyway. He’s really kind of dark looking and liberal and hates America and stuff.

Well I just figured it out. We have been using the Taliban to hone in the targeting systems on the drone aircraft and we just needed some fresh targets. Since it is illegal to shoot them in Cuba we are just moving targets to a better down range target area. I hope they enjoy their trip back down range.

We must have been separated at birth or something. How many times now have you said what I was thinking?
Has anyone else noticed how the timing of all of this military tarnishing comes at a time when they are coming home? Just like Vietnam. What the media doesn’t want to confirm is that in private, the majority of people I talk to don’t really care if the Taliban gets pissed on by the military. They understand the frustration caused by the current ROE.
Current ROE = Sand rat shoots at them until ammo gone, sand rat drops gun and walks away unmolested.
My ROE = Deplete the sand rats out of ammo and then blow their f’ing heads off after they lay down their empty arms and try to walk away. We would have finished this crap 7 years ago.

Do you know what an adhominym attack is, it is making a statement as a fact without providing proofs. Such as “ they voted for Obama”, who did, what are their names, may I review their ballot? That’s like saying “you both are liberals”, I’m sure you are not, but I provide no proofs if I stuck to my statement as if it were fact. So no, I’m not buying your baseless accusations.
Secondly, I’m not tring to besmirch or belittle you, vote for whomever you choose to. I’m of the opinion that a vote for anyone but RP is going to get us what we have today. And Lord knows that going just peachy isn’t it? What do I base me beliefs upon, hours of background searches on all the candidates, but do your own homework boys, I’m not your school marm. And to answer your unasked question, should RP not get the nod I will not be voting. WHY? Because unlike some, I don’t vote to cosign evil and my own demise just to replace one globalist with another, based upon skin color or any other reasoning.
Lastly, I laughed at the “ butt patting” comment, I lead, and I couldn’t care less wether I have the approval of anyone else in my doing so. My self esteem is vertically based not horizontally, try it someday. From my previous comment one can easily ascertain where I stand on war, with or without RP’s or your approvals. But RP is the only constitutionally sound candidate, it’s not even close.

Posted on January 15, 2012 at 1:09pmA new way to look at Ron Paul’s “non-interventionist” stance (which I personally think is “isolationism”) but we’ll call it what HE thinks it is. I don’t think it’s a good thing because I don’t think it’s a thing at all. “Non-interventionism” is no more a principle than “interventionism” is. It’s not obvious to me that “never intervene” is a wiser, more sensible, more prudent or more just approach than “always intervene” would be.
It seems to me, rather, to be the sort of crutch Paul falls back on instead of engaging in the difficult, messy conversation of an actual principled approach to evaluating any given situation. It allows you to escape having to know or care at all about any particular situation, because you’ve got a one-size-fits-all answer to any and every question. A Ron Paul cop-out, like some issues he likes to say is a states issue, not a federal one. Ignoring or passing the buck is a Paul answer to many hard questions.

Ask yourself this question, “When is war ever beneficial to the people?”
The spoils of war are always handed to the few and priviledged, yet the costs are always spread out. This is only monetary mind you, the real cost of war, the lives and the economy lost from fine young people losing their lives, will always out weight any gains.
The only JUST war is that of self-defense of the nation as a whole. You call Paul a pacifist, which indicates you don’t understand where he is coming from. He understands that war is never good, and it is only a necessary evil that is to be avoided at all costs. The communists the everyone has been proclaiming to be disgusted with believe the ends justify the means. If you think whatever mischief we have caused around the world is justified by the ‘strategic gains’ we supposedly obtain… you’re no better than the uber fascist/communists who are willing to kill millions for their utopia.
War is not glamorous, it is never good, and it is only just in self-defense. If you think Iran/Iraq/Afghanistan have ever posed a threat to the United States, we would have to go to war with nearly every country in the world.
Our current foreign policy is not Republican, George Bush got elected on Ron Paul’s platform.

Report Post »I see what your missing in your thought process, and considering we have a tyrant at present it might be difficult to see where a President Paul would act differently.
War, is not an act constitutionally in the power of a president to declare, nor was it ever intended to be so. Lincoln, had a problem, when the Southren States seceded there was no longer a quorum ( see Roberts Rules of Order ) in congress to constitutionally declare war against them because all the Southren congressmen left DC en Masse. Lincoln was constitutionally without authority to wage war then, so what did he do? He had the remaing congress pass the first “ war powers act” which empowered him authority to declare the war. Constitutionally Lincoln was wrong, but morally he was very correct in doing so. Lincoln had stated that his most fervent desire was to reconvene congress after the war and to repeal the “war powers act” and all the martial law that went with it. Sadly we know Lincoln was murdered before he could get congress to act, and the law was never repealed. This established “precedent”, one that is used lately against us, citizens by presidents and to declare war without constitutional authority.
Where your thinking departs from reality, is in the assumption that congress will blindly follow President Paul even if war should be declared. Congress would not do this say should anyone attack us or our allies, like Israel, and a president has NO CHOICE then.
