MOSCOW (AP) — A top Palestinian official says Russia is supporting his government’s bid to seek recognition of a Palestinian state at the United Nations this fall.
U.N. membership requires a recommendation from the Security Council and approval by two-thirds of the General Assembly, or 128 countries.
Nabil Shaath, head of a Palestinian delegation that met Tuesday with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, said “our plan to go to the United Nations will get support from Russia.”
Shaath did not specify exactly what he meant by Russia’s “support.”
Lavrov was quoted by Russian news agencies as saying the aim of talks by the Mideast Quartet – of which Russia is part – is the creation of an “independent, democratic Palestinian state.”

Also the soviet Union won the second world war while America did all but stand idly by.
If you have to dredge up some old stories you may not want to miss that part.

We appear vulnerable and other countries are taking advantage of it.
And I blame both parties for our current weakened economic and military strength. We are over stretched and over spent. If we don’t stop spreading ourselves all over the world finically and militarily America will fall under its own weight.
It’s like building a bigger roof by using the truces from underneath. It can not hold. We are very close to the point of collapse. You might want to learn some basic Chinese and Russian phrases.

Indeed they will, so many nations are seeking the destruction of Israel; and aside from the religious differences there does seem to be another underlying theme to it. If I am reading the other reports on the new gas fields Israel is trying to develop, these would fall into the new state of Palestine for almost all of it and hence could be exploited easier by foreign inflences.

Are you kidding me? You see no reason why people would find Israeli policies pertaining to Palestine disgusting? Does “apartheid” ring a bell? Does the word “ghetto” mean anything to you? Encroaching on their land with illegal settlements? Globally punishing a whole population for the acts of a few? Using weapons that are illegal under international laws against civilians? Upholding an illegal blockade?
Hell yes there are “underlying reasons”. And those reasons would be that Israeli policies are terrible and against human rights. And don’t start with the whole “destruction of Israel” thing and don’t you even dare use the word “antisemitism”, because it’s not against the Jews. It’s against the horrible policies of the Israeli leadership.

Posted on July 5, 2011 at 9:01amWill be interesting to see how this plays out.
From the UN website:
The Council is composed of five permanent members — China, France, Russian Federation, the United Kingdom and the United States — and ten non-permanent members (with year of term’s end):
Bosnia and Herzegovina (2011)
Germany (2012)
Portugal (2012)
Brazil (2011)
India (2012)
South Africa (2012)
Colombia (2012)
Lebanon (2011)
Gabon (2011)
Nigeria (2011)
The General Assembly elected Colombia, Germany, India, Portugal and South Africa to serve as non-permanent members of the Security Council for two-year terms starting on 1 January 2011. The newly elected countries have replaced Austria, Japan, Mexico, Turkey and Uganda.
The Presidency of the Security Council is held in turn by the members of the Security Council in the English alphabetical order of their names. Each President holds office for one calendar month.
Each Council member has one vote. Decisions on procedural matters are made by an affirmative vote of at least nine of the 15 members. Decisions on substantive matters require nine votes, including the concurring votes of all five permanent members.
Under the Charter, all Members of the United Nations agree to accept and carry out the decisions of the Security Council. While other organs of the United Nations make recommendations to Governments, the Council alone has the power to take decisions which Member States are obligated under the Charter to carry o

Posted on July 5, 2011 at 9:37amIf this comes to a vote, I’ll bet the US “abstains” . Voting Yes or No would be political suicide at home and internationally.
A permanent member of the UN Security Council does not necessarily have to veto a resolution if it doesn’t agree with it. As a matter of strategy; a member may also decide to simply abstain from a vote if it so chooses. Abstaining from a vote does is not counted as a “veto”.
Example: This is exactly what happened with UN Resolution 1973 regarding the no-fly zone that’s now being enforced in Libya. Brazil, China, Germany, India and Russia abstained from the vote. However, because the remaining three permanent members were unanimous in their vote, the resolution was adopted.

Posted on July 5, 2011 at 9:46amObama could allow a UN resolution supporting Palestinian statehood to pass, just by abstaining from the vote.
With this action, Obama wouldn‘t be directly voting against Israel and he wouldn’t be voting in favor of the Palestinians. The Israelis couldn‘t accuse him of directly voting against them and the Palestinians couldn’t claim he directly voted in their favor.
It’s the perfect Obama solution: “Hey, it wasn’t my fault”
