Report: Russian Nuclear Attack Sub Patrolled Waters Off Gulf for a Month…Undetected

A file picture taken in Brest harbor, western France, on September 21, 2004, shows the Vepr Russian nuclear submarine of the Project 971 Shchuka-B type, or Akula-class (Shark) by NATO classification , the same type as the Nerpa Russian nuclear submarine. Russia has handed over the nuclear-powered attack submarine Nerpa to India at a ceremony that followed more than two years of delays, a source in the naval chief of staff told ITAR-TASS today. Credit: AFP/Getty Images
A Russian, nuclear-powered attack sub patrolled the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, off the U.S. coast, undetected for a month, a new startling report from the Washington Free Beacon says.
The sub, the Free Beacon says, is an Akula vessel loaded with cruise missiles and is one of the quietest in the Russian fleet.
From the report:
The stealth underwater incursion in the Gulf took place at the same time Russian strategic bombers made incursions into restricted U.S. airspace near Alaska and California in June and July, and highlights a growing military assertiveness by Moscow.
The submarine patrol also exposed what U.S. officials said were deficiencies in U.S. anti-submarine warfare capabilities—forces that are facing cuts under the Obama administration’s plan to reduce defense spending by $487 billion over the next 10 years.
The Navy is in charge of detecting submarines, especially those that sail near U.S. nuclear missile submarines, and uses undersea sensors and satellites to locate and track them.
The fact that the Akula was not detected in the Gulf is cause for concern, U.S. officials said.
[...]
“The Akula was built for one reason and one reason only: To kill U.S. Navy ballistic missile submarines and their crews,” said a second U.S. official.
“It’s a very stealthy boat so it can sneak around and avoid detection and hope to get past any protective screen a boomer might have in place,” the official said, referring to the Navy nickname for strategic missile submarines.
If confirmed, this isn’t the first time the Russians have made such a bold move recently. In 2009, the New York Times reported two other nuclear-powered attack subs were found to have patrolled the eastern seaboard, about 200 miles off the coast.
“It’s a confounding situation arising from a lack of leadership in our dealings with Moscow,” Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) told the Free Beacon. “While the president is touting our supposed ‘reset’ in relations with Russia, Vladimir Putin is actively working against American interests, whether it’s in Syria or here in our own backyard.”

Posted on August 14, 2012 at 11:50amI was in a anti-submarine helicoptor squadron in when I was in the Navy. This is what we did. It is really freaking hard to find this guys if they have a good captain that knows what he’s doing. The best way to find them is dropping sonoboueys where you want to patrol and fly P-3′s, S-3′s, and SH060F helicoptors to monitor them. It’s still hard to find them. But, I suspect we’ll be stepping up patrol now.
Don‘t think for 2 seconds that we don’t have subs in the russians waters too. I KNOW how hard to find our guys are!!

Report Post »Just thought I’d let you know. If obama gets re-elected his 2nd term plans; gut the military! So Glenn and Rush don’t need to look at cutting it. From WND, the Greatest Military in the World is going to end up pointing fingers shooting rubber bands, rather than guns! He’s gutting everything, and basically, we’ll have peacemakers like the UN! These peacemakers will carry guns like Barney Fife and have 1 round! And that round is not for others!

Did I miss something? Are the Aliens attacking? No, if its not for Aliens, “illegal or space” and their not for Military who’s it for? Why then would the National Weather Service order this? Could it be for killing Americans? Why would DHS need that many rounds? How many people are in the US? Isn’t it like 350 million? I’m not sure, but is it possible something else is happening and maybe their arming a Militia? Come on people, Why in H_ll does the National Weather Service need ammo?

Last, why would DHS buy bullet proof checkpoint booths with stop and go lights? From the way it looks; DHS is getting ready for Civil Unrest!

The DEFENSIVE missile shield is meant to defend Europe and America from Iran – not attack Russia – GWB started this then Obama told Putin he would stop this defensive program.. Amazingly, Obama only reduced it. Still, 71 nukes in Cuba 90 miles from America but no one is reporting on it (at least past 24 hours when Putin said it).

With our technology, how could a sub the size of a football field be undetected unless of course the Commander and Chief who has shown in everyway except to just come out verbally and tell We The People that he is a Communist, and by coincidence a Russian Submarine armed with nuclear warheads is in our waters. Putin who is not the leader of Russia and was the leader of the Soviet Union‘s KGB probably knows more about our military defense then the Pentagon and if We The People don’t realize Obama‘s ultimate plan of replacing our Democracy with Communism then you are all really some dumb mo fo’s.

loriann12
Posted on August 14, 2012 at 11:20amYou’d be surprised how many Russian subs get close to our borders. That was my job in the Navy in the early 80′s. The only reason they were not detected is because one of ours didn’t get that close to our border. I was stationed in Bermuda, and one went undetected for a while until a US sub picked it up and chased it away. We reported it, only to be told it wasn’t there. That’s because the US was going faster than they told us it could go. I ws told in ASchool that one came into the harbor near Norfolk. We were classified Secret NoForn, No Foreign nationals, and were told (perhaps to scare us) that there was a Marine with a bullet with our name on it in case we got attacked.

Posted on August 14, 2012 at 10:53amI love your optimism. Unfortunately, your assertion suggests the recipricol. Perhaps the Russians knew they were being tracked. Maybe it wasn’t about whether they COULD get close, but rather that they DID get close. Besides, the real issue is not whether we could TRACK a sub, but whether we can RESPOND in time if the Russians decided to do something. We can‘t always assume the US military is full of supermen who don’t make mistakes. And the Russians aren’t goat herders in the hills of Afganistan (who incidentally carried off the deadliest attack on American soil since Pearl Harbor). Respect your enemy. Unfortunately, too many do not consider Russia an enemy, nor do they respect them. This is not the Cold War, there are too many in positions for decisions who would hesitate in the face of a “non-enemy” who commits a seemingly inconceivable act. And given the objective, a hesitation is all that would be needed.

Posted on August 14, 2012 at 11:56am@Vitw: In the case of the Russian subs, or their bombers coming close to our borders; the key is that if they can do so, anyoen with a sub or ship equipped with one nuclear tipped missile, may be able to do the same…they only need to get it right once, and then strike for a high altitude EMP burst to blackout the nation; or detonate one over a major city.
Either way the psychological impact when combined with the physical destruction would be immense, crippling the nation in a wave of terror, that would be hyper served by the survivng press and the govenrment agencies, and Obama would have the emergency he needs.
Assuming the UN still functioned or existed, he would turn to them for ‘peacekeeping troops’ to aid the US military, and most would be Russian, N Korea, China, Iran and other groups that loathe the US and will not hestitate for a moment to shoot our people down en mass.

Posted on August 14, 2012 at 2:40pmYou obviously know more about subs then I do so I have a question. A brand new German built sub (built for Israel) carrying a 500 kiloton nuke was “stolen” from a German port the night of May 2nd. Many sub hunting planes have been combing the Atlantic looking for it. Why can’t they find it? Additional info includes NATO made an unbelievably stupid mistake. They were tracking the nuke coming from Russia to see where it was going. When told “it has been loaded on a ship” they said to not stop the “ship” if it leaves. Lost in translation was that the ship was a sub. They have no idea who the crew is or why they took the sub and the nuke. It supposedly went through the crowded port at full speed then dived at the first opportunity. They guess Israel. But the media dropped the story within 48 hours. There are a few YT videos and EU media reports from the early days but nothing since then!

Note that these moves are in additon to the warships and supply ships Russia has forwarded to their base in Syria; and the over 10 Russian bombers flown to skirt the borders of America. Putin is doing more than broadcasting the Russian Bear is back, he is allowing his armed forces to train up in the areas of strategic deterence and strategic projection.
This is a systematic build up and relearning for the Russians, one step at a time with one goal; to again become a dominate world power, especially as the traitor Obama is weakening us beyond the point of return if another war breaks out.

Posted on August 14, 2012 at 10:15amWhy attack us, we’re becoming Commies at an incredible rate thanks to Obama and his domestic terrorist buddies. In reality, the Cold War is still going and the Commies are winning.

Posted on August 14, 2012 at 10:25amConsider this scenerio . . . Russia fires off a nuke above the US from a sub in the Gulf. The EMP knocks out everything. The nuke is blammed on terrorists firing a nuke from a Gulf based cargo ship. That way Russia and China can offer to lead the humanitarian effort to help America get back on its feet, which includes security. And in the blink of an eye, “peaceful” Russian and Chinese troops patrol our street. And why would we fire on them, or fight back, after all they’re coming to help, right? And, oh well, maybe while they’re here, maybe they’ll just help us reconstruct our government using a “modified” constitution.
With President Obama, the Marxist have come real close, you’re right. Perhaps the above scenerio could be a back up plan in case Obama looses in November. Food for thought.

Posted on August 14, 2012 at 10:54amI have no idea what you mean by this comment. Why does the media know about it? Because they are suppose to know about it. They are suppose to uncover every possible fact about the branches of government they possibly can. That is their function, or rather use to be, until a little over a decade ago when they became willing subservants of the executive branch and utterly failed on reporting the lies being discussed about the invasion of Iraq. Since then, the media simply goes with the story of whoever is in charge. Don’t want to rock the boat and the gravy train and all that.

Posted on August 14, 2012 at 10:18amThey are pretty good at tracking your guns – well at least gun owners. But the guns you have aren’t going to actually help in the coming times.

Just curious, why do you say that the guns we have won’t matter?

Because we are so outgunned by our police and military any resistance would be crushed. How many RPGs do you think are owned by citizens in the US? Compare that number to the citizens of Afghanistan or Iraq. We are completely out gunned.
