Report: Sen. Joe Lieberman Will Step Down in 2012

Senator Joe Lieberman, D-Conn., is facing an uphill battle in his home state for reelection in 2012 and, according to Politico, will likely not seek reelection when his fourth term comes to a close.

Report: Sen. Joe Lieberman Will Step Down in 2012

Sen. Joe Lieberman, D-Conn.

Politico reports that the former Democratic vice presidential candidate will make a statement Wednesday to announce his retirement from the Senate after political pundits have speculated his future for months.

“After many thoughtful conversations with family and friends over the last several months, Sen. Lieberman made a decision about his future over the holidays which he plans to announce on Wednesday,” a Lieberman spokeswoman told Politico. The Senator will speak Wednesday afternoon at the Marriott Hotel in Stamford, Conn.

On Tuesday, former Connecticut secretary of state Susan Bysiewicz announced her intentions to run for Lieberman’s Senate seat in 2012. A Lieberman aide insisted, however, that the Senator’s decision to step down had already been made and the Wednesday announcement has been in the works for several weeks.

After winning his fourth term in office during the 2006 election as an Independent, Lieberman’s popularity among Democrats continued to decay as he supported the Iraq war, opposed the public option in health care reform and endorsed Republican John McCain for president in 2008.

Lieberman’s announcement comes on the heals of other notable 2012 retirement news in the Senate, including recent announcements from Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., and Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas.

Look at how Joe voted for God’s sake!
Yes, he was an “INDEPENDENT”, Really?! He voted Democrat!
The worst thing that can happen is that he’s replaced by a Democrat. No loss, No gain.
Maybe selling his state down the river on OBAMACRE will finally wake up a lot of people in his state.

It seems to me that, while it would be nice to replace Joe with a true conservative, it would be otherwise favorable to have an obvious liberal in his seat instead of a ‘wolf in sheep’s clothing’ moderate. The moderate’s are the most dangerous because they typically retain the ability to pull the wool over the eyes of their constituents, the media or even worse they are able to persuade republicans to compromise(their principles) on a bad/unconstitutional piece of legislation. When everyone can see a liberal for who/what they are it eventually only helps the conservative cause.

Lieberman is as close to an actual Independet as any politician I can remember. He is a true “middle of the roader” who can listen to reason most of the time. As politics have evolved so has Lieberman. The problem with this evolution is that he has moved away from the basic majority of Americans like most politicians. He has been as complicit in the spending binges as many of his colleagues and, therefore, it is high time for him to step down. We can do without one of the preeminent Washington outsiders who have been there far too long.

I am glad that he is going. He’s a dinosaur. He does not get it.
Yes, I understand that he was a good advocate for the people. I think that he is a good man.
I understand that he is a member of the Senate who is not clueless about the threat to this nation from Islamic Jihad, the violent, AND the peaceful.

I‘m glad he’s going because ,even though he won his last election as an Independent, he still voted YES!,YES!, a thousand times YES!, for OBAMACARE. He abetted our 14 TRILLION dollar debt!
I cannot forgive him for that.
He is one of the reasons that this nation is holding a big scrape and bow state dinner for Hu Jintao.
Here’s a little F.Y.I. to put things into perspective. One million seconds is about 11 1/2 days. A billion seconds is 32 years. A trillion seconds is 32,000 years.
A vast difference,NON? Translate seconds to dollars…,IT’S INfreakingSANE!
To me…,his legacy? Joe sold his country down the river with his YES vote! That obliterates any good he ever did!

But look at it realistically, if you have someone that is moderate and agrees with the Republicans half the time is that not better than having a progressive Dem that never agrees? This is simply the way our government works, they cant all be extreme right wing libertarian tea partiers. I would actually be scared if they were…Power corrupts. Well, I sure won’t be missing him. It was Joe Lieberman, Susan Collins, and Tom Carper who proposed and sponsored the 2009 Cybersecurity (PCNAA) Bill that gave President Obama an “Internet Kill Switch” – the “authority to shut down private sector or government networks” (viz.- to shut down the Internet). The origional bill granted the President the authority to shut down networks (viz.- Blogs like this) INDEFINITELY if the President “determined” that a cyberattack has taken place (they’re always taking place), but it was amended to require the President to “get Congressional approval after controlling a network for 120 days.” That’s a full SIX MONTHS of Presidential control of our speech. Anyone care to name for me ANY President they’d feel comfortable giving that kind of power to? Well Old Joe Lieberman felt that THIS President, and ANY President to come, could readily be trusted with this kind of control over our most fundamental freedom!
Now, given the general Leftward slant of the mainstream media, the constant Dem cries to reintroduce “The Fairness Doctrine” in order to rein in Conservative Talk Radio, the recent passage of an Act allowing the Attorney General (Eric Holder) to shut down ANY web site he chooses simply by getting a single Federal Judge’s Order (they’ve already shut down a lot of sites – no day in Court, no Appeal, the site simply disappears…), Joe’s engineering the creation of the “Internet Kill Switch” for the President at the very least puts Old Joe in the category of “useful idiots”, if not firmly in the crowd of Anti-Free Speech Progressives who don’t much care for speech that disagrees with their own. So now, is anybody here STILL going to miss Joe Lieberman?
