Report: ‘Social Justice’ Group Gets Physical With UT Immigration Bill Supporters

Members of a social justice group got into a heated, and physical, argument with supporters of a controversial Utah Immigration bill at the Capitol building in Salt Lake City on Wednesday.

During a rally yesterday, Sam Rangel of the group United for Social Justice (USJ) began heckling state Rep. Stephen Sandstrom, author of a controversial Arizona-style immigration bill. When a supporter of the bill yelled back at Rangel, the argument quickly turned physical. News cameras from KLS-TV caught part of the altercation:

“It’s just a theater puppet show,” Rangel told KLS. “They’re trying to sell fear to people.“ The ”they” included Rep. Chris Herrod, also a bill supporter, and Arturo Morales-Llan, a legal immigrant and a Latino member of the Utah Coalition on Illegal Immigration who also supports the bill.

According to the Salt Lake Tribune, Melodia Gutierrez, also of United for Social Justice, and Michael Picardi, of the Progressive Coalition of Utah, were ushered away by Highway Patrol troopers. While neither was arrested, Troopers said they were trying to separate and calm emotional people.

Gutierrez, co-director of USJ, told the Tribune she was trying to shield a friend who was being bumped by protesters, and Picardi said he stepped in by tapping on the shoulder of a man who was bumping Gutierrez, “and he started yelling that I was assaulting him.”

United for Social Justice calls itself “a band of misfits” with a vision for “Equality and social justice.” The group opposes the Arizona immigration bill (SB 1070), the similarly-styled Utah immigration bill, and supports “full equality in wages, jobs, voting, union rights, benefits, housing, health care, and education,“ as well as ”full legalization” for, illegal aliens.

The group’s website includes a quote by Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara explaining that “the true revolutionary is guided by great feelings of love.”

Like Arizona’s immigration bill this summer, Sandstorm’s bill requires law officers to verify the legal status of any person they stop if “reasonable suspicion” exists that they are in the country illegally.

The bill is opposed by a group of faith and political leaders who signed a document called the Utah Compact. Signers, the Tribune says, “include high-powered civic and religious groups, including the LDS Church.”

“That compact opposes immigration policies that unnecessarily separate families through deportation; says immigration is a federal – not state – issue; favors focusing resources on criminal and not civil issues (in which it classifies illegal immigration); and calls for civil dialogue on the issue,” the paper explains.

Sandstorm isn’t detered.

“Contrary to what you may have heard in recent days, my bill, the Utah Immigration Enforcement Act, is alive and well,” he said at the rally. “This bill will become law in the state of Utah.”

    We are supposed to be a nation of law…that law applies to all citizens whether they be homeborn or strangers. (If that sounds familiar, it is straight out of the Bible..strangers had the same rights as the homeborn IF they followed the covenant teachings and instructions) The strangers could not become part of the assembly if they were not willing to live by the rules. If you don’t want to abide by the laws of America,then you need to go somewhere else!! If you come here illegally, you have already broken our laws and should not be allowed to stay.
    I really don’t understand why the LDS church opposes this law….because I am sure the church has teaching and instructions…and I am sure that you need to abide by these rules to remain a member in good standing in the church. Why would we expect less for the laws of our country.
    So I am going to suggest to you that people standing around with signs saying “Who would Jesus Deport” have not read enough of their Bible to understand what it really teaches about justice.

    Yes, we are all mostly Immigrants and that is DIFFERENT from Illegals Aliens.
    Look up the definition. Immigrants came here LEGALLY. Aliens are here ILLEGALLY and as such, are criminals. Citizens all over this country get ARRESTED every single day on lesser charges.
    I am sick and tired of people treating Immigrants like Illegals. They are NOT the same.
    Immigrants came here and were invited here, legally and they had PAPERS and health certificates and OBEYED and RESPECTED the laws of this country. America. Stop comparing Immigrants to Illegals. Immigrants worked hard and made sacrifices you would never hear of an Illegal Alien doing. Immigrants never asked or expected a handout. They were proud, clean, hard working and made every sacrifice they could and more to ADD to the wealth and economy of America. They gave and never took or expected anything. They did not feel like they were OWED anything. They were LEGAL.

      Actually, she is in her early 40′s and her friend who is helping her is 38….but you are right. They are trying to make a difference there in their own country, community. And, her husband and kids support her. Gotta hand it to them…maybe even send them funds to help. they have the right idea.

      My question to you is “if you elect a governmental body to write, enact, and enfore laws in this nation, under what form of governance do you expect those laws to be written? Republic/democratic laws or socilists laws? If a government rules by duplicity are christians or citizens at large expected to conform and obey the laws the duplicit lawmakers write? Is GOD a lier? Does he not both set up and tear down governments? Does he not use humans as his instriment in doing both? Are you saying whatever Obama and his socialist (lucifarian) minions choose to enforce as law in our Republic that GOD says we need to comply?     In California, yesterday, students were protesting and screamin because Illegals are being given tuition tax breaks while the Legals had their hiked up. A lot. Taxpayers are paying 200 million dollars plus 23,000 per student for tuition breaks and cuts in their costs. No wonder students who are here legally are angry as all get out. There are also other subsidies that we are paying for regarding these illegals. This is happening now, has already happened.

    Nothing to download. All the Senate schedule and bills are posted. This new illegal alien bill anger you.
    No residency requirement and the age is 15 no matter where they presently live. It get’s pretty bad. I don’t call illegals “Immigrants”. Immigrants came here legally. These are illegal aliens and criminals. They already have the votes to pass tis Dream Act Bill. Write, call and don’t limit your efforts to only your Congressman or Senator. I write and call all of them. I let them know the entire world is watching and I have family and friends in many States.

    California has already received, without our knowledge, 88 million dollars this year to “KEEP” illegals in their State. To pay for those illegals they have in Calif. jails. California is being paid NOT to deport and NOT to call ice and NOT to follow the laws. This is a fact. It is being given to several other States also. New York received 14 million of taxpayer dollars. Another State received 13 million. All taxpayer money, without your knowledge. It is being handed out by the Department of Justice as FREE GRANTS. For States that harbor Illegals and provide a Sanctuary for them. They tried to hide it but as usual, they cannot hide from their own lies and an Investigative reporter uncovered it last week. Was on the News and the papers.
    Listen people, I could NOT make this stuff up if I wanted to.
    This President will NEVER enforce Immigration Laws. He is all for Global Interests and that means open borders. Every word he utters, every speech he makes, listen carefully. It is like George Soros is speaking. Parrots.     I keep hearing the same old sob story: “They are coming here to better their lives…” OK, so what? If we continue to let this happen, our way of life and more importantly, that of our children, will be a pipe dream.

    Stop them at the border BY ANY MEANS POSSIBLE!!! As far as those already here, round them up, and kick them out. Cut off any and all traffic through our Southern border. No one in, no one out.

    This is somewhat of a segway, but I’m hoping someone will be able to provide a decent answer: What kind of retort can be used in the illegal immigrant debate whenever someone brings up the twist that American colonists were “illegal” and pushed against Native Americans? It recently came up in a debate, and I’m too dumbstruck to respond rationally. Something definitely doesn’t jive, but, again, I’m at a loss to reply. Any help?

      Interesting as that rebuttal is (and as a partial Native I find it interesting indeed, with sad laughter), it is moot. By moot I intend to point out that the “law of the land” is the “law” written by those who control the “land”. At present the “law” says those who enter by non-legal means are illegal (no matter the race no matter the social standing or class). Therfore illegal is illegal, and no attempt to mitigate it or transfer responsability by deflection makes it any less illegal.

    I always like the separating families’ argument. Why wouldn’t the rest of the family go with the ones being deported? Don’t they want to be together, aren’t we a mean Country Like Michelle Obama says, why would they want to stay? Please keep the family together.       This argument of don’t separate the families is old and dumb. People who break the law are constantly separated from their families: if you kill or rape someone (and are caught) you are separated from your family, if you sell drugs (and are caught) you are separated from your family, if you wright bad checks (and are caught) you are separated from your family, If you grow marijuana (and are caught) you are separated from your family. This list goes on and on… This is what has happened to people for over 1000 years for violating the “laws of the land”.

      The supporters of illegal immigration would blame the government for breaking up families like a woman blames the mistress when her husband cheats. Come on, blame where blame is due, the ones who sneek in here are breaking up families if they are deported and don’t bother to take thier family with them. Besides most of their family is assumedly in Mexico.

      The girl who claims to have been pushed was just acting like someone pushed her, I watched it a couple of times. Nobody pushed her.

      My great grandparents were separated for a year as they had to come one at a time. My Great Grandmother Irene stayed in Italy and came by ship alone, and struck with polio! Before her husband Marc could come here his brother had to sign a legal paper agreeing to support him if he couldn’t find work. He did find work and he sent for his wife after getting everything ready. This is how it has always been done. One problem with immigration today is that we’re all so damn spoiled. Spoiled rotton.

      The young lady who made that claim might look up the meaning of illegal and, straw-man.

    Since when is breaking a federal law a civil issue? We could use an injection of clear-cut values into these discussions, as the rhetoric is becoming so muddy it’s hard to agree on anything. I believe we could make progress if we (all sides of the debate) could agree on some basic terminology and principles. But when the progressives refuse to acknowledge that illegal aliens have broken a federal law by crossing the border without going through proper channels, how can we ever resolve this?
    And, no, I have no interest in simply giving in and opening our borders.

      Who would Jesus deport? Probably the people who lie and cheat to get in this country and then suck the life out of it on welfare.       I also particularly liked the sign about Who Jesus would deport. The person who made that sign is probably resting heavily on “Let he who has no sin cast the first stone.” (Jn. 8:7) but I think back to when Peter asked Jesus about the poll tax and Jesus told Peter to render unto Ceasar what is Ceasar‘s and to God what is God’s. (Mt. 22:21) And then there is Titus 3:1″Remind them to be subject to rulers. to authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good deed….” (NASB) I think PatriotDave was also referencing that verse in his post, too.

      So, I wonder if the person who made that sign intended to say what the sign actually means? Interesting, no?

      there they go its going to hurt little school children if we inforce our laws and throw them out. of course we are going to take the money from the schools to do this. we are not smart enough to cut off funding to anything else. why do they always use that lie? i live in az and from what i hear the schools are getting better because we got less illegals in our schools. teachers got more time to spend with each student when there are less illegals in our schools. sorry george soros your not going to get away with your little game. we will hunt you down like a dog. tell that to your daddy ********! we will get you george no matter what happens. lets see if you can handle what you put your own people through. do you think you scare us ? hardly your just another rich loser who buys your friends. well some things cant be bought. we are not for sale to you or anyone else. your playing with a hornets nest and your about to be stung badly!

As a matter of fact, I think they are just as oppressive and tyrannical as progressivism.

      Our government is clueless. Misfeasant and Malfeasant is the best way to describe the United States Government’s handling of border security and illegal immigration. Our politicians fail to understand that, no law that they can pass, no amount of Border Patrol Agents or National Guardsmen on the Border will stop illegal immigration and the threat on our national sovereignty.

      The answer? As long as there is “Hope”, illegal immigrants will continue to come, they will continue to take the necessary risks associated with illegal entry into the United States. Take away their “Hope” and illegal immigration will trickle to a stop. We can take away that “Hope” by taking away the jobs. If our government is so eager to pass legislation, pass legislation that will make employing illegal immigrants so horribly dangerous that they simply will not do it. Corporate as well as personal asset forfeiture for employers that benefit from illegal labor. Horrendous fines per illegal immigrant found to be employed. Take away the jobs and illegal immigrants will have no more reason to come, take away the jobs and we will not have to worry about “How” to remove millions of illegal immigrants already in the United States as they will self deport when they have no more jobs.

      The “Myth” that illegal immigrants come here to do the work Americans don’t want to do is simply that…a “Myth”. They come here to do the jobs that employers are unwilling to pay an American a decent wage to do. Take away that “Paid Slave Labor” of the illegal immigrant and employers will be forced to employ United States citizens and LEGAL residents under the protection of the nations labor laws. That will of course, raise prices but, why not pay 25 cents more a pound for tomatoes rather than steep health insurance premiums to cover uninsured illegal immigrant health care. High car insurance to cover “Uninsured Motorist” (Illegal immigrant) drivers, and higher local and school taxes to educate illegal immigrant children. Then, maybe our Border Patrol can manage our borders they way they should.

      Border Security and illegal immigration can happen tomorrow but, not with any plan our government has put forth so far.

      Forcing employers to employ United States citizens and LEGAL residents will reduce unemployment, working Americans are less of a burden on social services, working Americans pay taxes reducing the deficit. Then, if there is still a need for “Imported” labor, willing applicants can list themselves with the U.S. Consulate in their country allowing background checks on applicants ensuring we are not allowing criminals to enter the United States. Once approved, U.S. employers can request “X” amount of employees by location. Work Visas can then be issued for cleared applicants to enter and work in the United States. We will then know who, when, where, and why a foriegn national is entering the United States, where they will be, and what they will be doing. After a pre-determined period of time, if the worker has abided by the laws of the United States, they can then apply to adjust their status to a legal resident and ultimately U.S. citizenship providing that “Path to Citizenship”.

      Now, I have sent this to Gov. Brewer, Senators and Congressmen alike and guess what? NO RESPONSE!!!

      I guess they really don’t want to “Fix” illegal immigration or “Secure” our borders…hmmmmmmm

      you forgot an important not-often-mentioned element to the illegal mexican migration into America.
      that is the fact that Mexico is teetering on becoming (if it isnt already) a failed state.

      is it really the “american way” to leave the poor masses destitute in a land that is imploding on our doorstep when what this country stands for is opportunity and freedom?

      granted, the same could be said about our country teetering on implosion but our problems are not because of the mexican migration.

      you should try thinking more dialecticly and less polemicly.

      Okay, it has been hours since I last read the responses so I think I have a pretty good perspective: It seems there is alot of misunderstanding and bickering going on here and I’m afraid that attitude is playing right into the hands of those who want to see us divided (I know I sound like a mother and I’m sorry). We have different takes on the same subject which makes for lively banter but I hate to read the attacks as most of us care so deeply about God and country which means we are all on the same team.       Hmmmm…give a man a fish and feed him for a day, teach him to fish and feed him for life.

      Allowing illegal immigration as a measure of “Good will” is feeding the illegal immigrant for the day, and not the answer, unfortunately, the Mexican people are responsible for their condition by allowing the corruption of their country…not our problem.

      AND, having spent 16 years as a Border Patrol Agent, I can tell you that, the poor migrant MEXICAN isn’t the major problem with our failed, misfeasant/malfeasant system. The fact is, the poor migrant Mexican worker is a drop in the illegal immigration bucket. On ANY given day, I would arrest 30 or more illegal immigrants. Of the 30, MAYBE 7 were non-criminal Mexican citizens. They other 23 were: Chinese, Pakistanis, Bosnians, Serbs, Cubans, just about any country you could think of…THEN, there were the MS-13 (Mara Salvatrucha) gang members coming from Central America, most, if not all, with criminal records here in the United States. Criminal records that included murder, rape, drug distribution…et cetera that are RETURNING after having been caught, convicted, and deported.

      ANYONE that believes illegal immigration is only poor little Mexicans is a fool and unfortunately, on the border they aren’t lining up before crossing to get a “Migrant Worker” sign hung around their neck so that we know they are just good people looking for work, nor are they getting that “Rapist”, “Murderer”, “Drug Dealer” or “Pedophile” sign hung around their neck indicating that they are the ones we should be targeting in our enforcement of the border. In order to stop the bad ones…we must stop them ALL and allow for the good ones to LEGALLY Immigrate through the legal means already in place.
