Report: Social Security Disability Benefits to Jump 71 Percent Over Next 10 Years

A new report from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) shows Social Security Disability Insurance benefits will increase 70 percent over the next ten years, leading Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) to warn that the disability trust fund will go bankrupt in four.
“[This] report from the Congressional Budget Office reveals a dramatic increase in applications and awards for Social Security disability, placing the disability trust fund on a fast-track to insolvency in just four years,” said Sen. Sessions, the ranking Republican on the Senate Budget Committee.
The disability insurance program, as the Washington Examiner’s Joel Gehrke notes, paid out $119 billion to 8.3 million workers in fiscal year 2011, accounting for approximately 18 percent of all Social Security spending.
$119 billion, folks.
“The department expects that number to jump to $204 billion — an increase of 71 percent, approximately — as the number of disabled workers and dependents receiving money increases to 12.3 million by 2022,” Gehrke adds.
Republicans on the budget committee also point out that more disability claims have been created in the last three months than jobs.
“It is clear there is a great need to distinguish between proper and improper disability claims, and to better incentivize and find acceptable work for those who are able,” said Sen. Sessions. “Today only 1 percent of Social Security disability recipients ever return to work.”
The expansion of the disability trust find has also driven up Medicare expenses due to the fact that all disability applicants automatically receive Medicare benefits after two years.
“In 2011, the disability trust fund caused an additional $80 billion in Medicare spending,” writes Gehrke.
Here’s an infographic from the CBO that helps makes sense of it all:

Posted on July 17, 2012 at 4:51pmWhy would you rat out your own brothers family? You and your other family members should be doing this kind of repair and problem resolution. Sit down and talk to her and your brother…tell them why you think what they are doing is distressing and disrespecting your entire family.
Report Post »We are not talking about some hideous crime like pedophilia or murder or anything close to any of that.
If you “turn in” your own family….then you have simply agreed to let the government get involved in yet another problem. Families apparently have become SO dysfunctional and risk averse that just look at what you typed in the post above. You want the government to “fix” your sister in law…and somehow you have forgotten that the entire welfare and public assistance “business” unit of the government(s) need to have as many welfare recipients as possible in order for their own government offices to flourish and grow. So in the end…your brother and sister in law will probably win the case you brought against them….they’ll still get benefits…the family will be damaged and hurt because of you ratting them out….and in the end nothing good at all happens. It is up to you and your other family members to fix this problem….start a business…get her involved in it….there are many good options and things that can come out of having your family fix it’s own family problems….the number one good thing is that you did NOT rely on the government to do it for you.

Posted on July 18, 2012 at 2:28pmSome people don’t learn from you telling them anything, and they definitely don’t learn by you being the government check. I have a sister-in-law (who thank goodness isn’t smart enough to get on disability). We (as a family) tried for years to get her and her husband on their own feet. He gets a job, loses it in a couple months. She has a degree as a assistant vet but doesn’t actually WANT to work. They live off his grandma. If it were me, I’d throw them out and let them sink or swim. But, like I said, at least they aren’t on welfare. I know a lady, and I’ve said this numerous times, who is on disability (and works every year at VBS in the kitchen for a week with over 200 kids) and all 4 of her children have Blackberries, including her.

Can any of us blame them? SS is poorly managed, no doubt, but people who wouldn’t otherwise are applying for the benefits out of sheer desperation.

Posted on July 17, 2012 at 4:21pmMy neighbor has been on SSD nearly her entire life. She could work if she wanted to but chooses rather to revolve her entire existence around “her benefits”. She doesn’t even try to “get well” and re-enter the workforce doing something gainful. She is a 50 year old human mammal who has permanently attached her lips to the Federal Governments teat…..yes I understand that there are folks who are simply too messed up to work anywhere…I understand all of that. I also know full well that there are perhaps millions of Americans who have decided to be just like my neighbor…..and so politically any one of any stripe that would put forth a campaign agenda to re-think this SSD program is committing a form of political suicide. The only way to end this entire SSD mess…..is to simply let it die from starvation. Let the program become insolvent and die. As harsh as that sounds…there is no viable political way to “make it better”…..because those politicians will be ousted from office or never elected in the first place. For the love of Pete….we can’t even get seniors who claim to be conservative and who DO have other income streams to give up one single cent of their own Social Security Benefits. The only way to cure the entire Social Security System is to let it die on the vine. Even the most pernicious weeds in the garden will die from starvation. Harsh? Yes. Any other way? Nope…there is no other way to stop this mess…other than simply letting it go broke.

I bring this up to juxtapose and support your comment on what conditions now qualify for SSD…..there are thousands of such group home and care facilities in the United States….there are jobs available at these places. Maybe..just maybe…many of these applicants for SSD should be compelled to work in one of these places for a month in order to qualify for SSD benefits….and maybe that might help get a few SSD applicants minds right when it comes to who is REALLY disabled and who is…..not so much.

I know you are passionate about your unique perspective of “all good things are rooted in socialism” theory….and I respect that. But holding a 3 trillion position backed up only by US Bonds…..can become a position of complete worthlessness very rapidly once those bonds turn into nothing but toilet paper. The moment the gold those bonds were once pledged against no longer was the standard….a US Bond simply became an IOU with “the full faith and credit of the US Government”……and that my friend is what the problem is. The conversation really has nothing to with polemics or politics or social theory. This is pure economics….and the United States is on the edge of the money cliff. The American Social Security System as we know it…is dying a slow painful but rapidly escalating death…and there is nothing proposed or dreamed or possibly ever contemplated from either side of the political or social theory aisle can do to save it. The Social Security System is broke….and in this context broke has 2 meanings. Insolvent and broken.

Most of the retiring baby-boomers WORKED and PAID taxes (both income and payroll) for those benefits. In fact, one couldn’t even “opt out” if they wanted too as the govt literally held a gun to their head in the form of arrest and financial ruin. The politicians made the rules and guaranteed Social Insecurity (both retirement income and disability).
Many of us baby-boomers argued against the big socialistic plans, even offered to forego any benefits and voluntarily kiss off the money we paid in to get out from under the system. OH NO! YOU CAN’T DO THAT said the Liberal politicians that were busy skimming the tax revenue for their own programs.
So, the system of stealing from one‘s children began with PROGRESSIVE LIBERAL politicians that can’t let a pot of saved money sit; rather they simply MUST spend it.
After working for most of our lives, we’re here to collect on the “promise” that we were FORCED to accept. You don’t like it, then DON’T vote Progressive Liberals into office. They have no idea of financial reality. And if you voted for President Marxist last time, STFU and pay your taxes… for the rest of your life.

Posted on July 17, 2012 at 2:39pm@Detroit Paperboy: Social Security Disability per se is not a scam, it’s a system created without much forethought. Rather as Social Security was instituted back in the ’30s, when few people lived past 65, SSDI was created back in the ’90s, when times were good. Now, in the absence of jobs and in view of state cutbacks, desperate people will grasp at it, and it’s the sort of thing that lends itself easily to scams. It’s galling. Even if very few who are on it live high on the hog, their numbers are multiplying, and it‘s taxpayers’ money they’re gobbling up.

Posted on July 17, 2012 at 5:23pmYeah Detroit….we should all be “reporting” these people to the very government that created the mess in the first place…..in fact SOCIALISMROCKS advice to you sounds as if it were being uttered by a staff sergeant in Hitlers SS. “Report” someone? Man I have to tell you that sounds almost creepy to me….
Just what we need…an entire nation of people that “report” on each other….“My neighbors lawn is too high” “Those black kids on the corner are listening to loud RAP music” “The guy two streets over has a hole in his muffler” “My son’s car inspection sticker has expired“ ”A woman in the grocery bought 58 dollars worth of crab legs with her food stamps” (Oh wait that’s not a reportable crime) “I saw Tina in the casino playing slot machines and her welfare card and food stamp card fell out on the floor” (Oh wait…that’s not a reportable crime either)
You see the pattern here? “Report Everyone”……that is exactly what socialism and communism employ as techniques to make all the sheep in the herd feel like they actually did something that mattered today….meanwhile all the upper echelon party and board members…the big wig comrades….are mostly overweight cigar smoking Boss Hogs who haven’t done a good days work in decades.
I’m sorry SOCIALISMROCKS…your comment to Detroit was NOT one of your best…and it leaves a sour creepy feeling in the palate.

Posted on July 18, 2012 at 10:47amFirst of all for all the SS arm chair generals on this board; You have to work and pay into the system for a minimum of ten years to claim SSDI benefits. This is that little SSDI deduction on your paycheck (assuming you know what a paycheck is)
When you are unable to work a doctor’s note does not get you disability payments. You will spend the next three years of your life between government hired doctors, psychiatrists, social workers, your doctors, and lawyers and a crap load of discouraging paperwork before you meet the DOJ (disability judge). By then you will have exhausted any savings you had (assuming you had any).
Yes of course there are those abusing the system, but there are also those that are legitimately disabled, with families that are at the end of their rope(s). There is a huge difference between welfare payments and food stamps and the Social Security Disability Insurance program. And statistics say one in four American workers will have a disabling injury during their work lives, so the odds are pretty good you may find yourself in the same boat. (if you actually work that is)
Report Post »jaylew
Posted on July 18, 2012 at 11:03pm@THELEFTMADEMERIGHT …respectfully the look back period in order to be considered eligible for SSDI is indeed 10 years….but depending on your age at the time of the disability you may only have to have worked a year and a half (in younger peoples cases) or only 5 years if you are over age 31. That means a person 35 years of age would only need to have worked a total of 5 years in the last 10 years. The 10 year aspect you may be confused with is for folks 60 and over…and in that portion of the eligibility test that simply means they have to have worked a total of 10 years during their entire lifetime while paying into social security. It is possible for a 27 year old person to be eligible for SSDI after only working 3 years since they became 21. That is a far cry from 10 years of work…and it is as I posited before many many times….just another portion of the Ponzi scheme that is the Social Security System in this country. As harsh as I seem to be…..understanding as I do and admitting here that yes we have folks who are genuinely disable and hurting…..the quicker this current system goes completely broke and belly up….the quicker a replacement and alternative system can be put in place. No politician or political party has the fortitude or the ability to actually get this done….the citizenry doesn’t possess the ability to accept this harsh reality either…it is simply going to have to wither and die on the vine. Sad…but true.

Posted on July 18, 2012 at 11:14pmI hear you man…..but at this point it doesn’t matter any longer….even if every applicant was rejected and denied by every SSA administrative judge…..the system is still going to collapse. It is similar to the Democrats complete inability to accept the following premise: The Dems want the rich to pay more income taxes…..you could tax every single so-called rich person at the 100 percent rate…in other words take their entire income…every red cent…and that STILL would not bail this country out of this fiscal mess…..it still would not cover the debt and the interest on the debt. Why Democrats can’t fess up and admit that to be the case is nearly stupefying. In fact all their banter and blather about the rich paying their fair share is in reality pure hogwash….to create a division…a class envy and warfare strategy simply so they can get re-elected once again. They will promulgate absolute financial fantasies and lies….NOT to help the people they claim they are trying to help….but they do it simply to get re-elected. Which makes anyone who campaigns in this fashion…and anyone who repeats the drivel as if it were the truth…it makes them all prostitutes of the worst sort. Soul Sucking Vampires and Ghouls….and therefore abusers of the less informed and less educated….those least able to afford the Democratic Mantra….are the very victims of the entire mass of lies.

This is not going to be funny in a couple of years. We have masses of folks who planned on social security being around, they paid into the system for decades and now the politicians who forced the taking of our money are telling us the system is broke.
I say fold the system completely and shut it down starting Jan 2013. Quit collecting social security out of the pay checks of American citizens and let them fend for their own retirement. We as Americans will work with our local church systems and in benevolence, we will take care of the needs of our elderly and disabled, just as we did before the catastrophe called social security came along.
You simply can not trust politicians. This is an example of the discussions we will be having concerning health care in the coming decade. We should simply consider dumping the entire thing a starting from scratch. We simply can’t do worse what what these politicians have done.
