Report: Stuxnet Cyberattack Was the Work of the U.S. and Israel

President Barack Obama secretly ordered a sophisticated wave of cyberattacks against Iranian nuclear enrichment facilities, according to the New York Times.

Obama decided to accelerate the program — started under President George W. Bush in 2006 and codenamed “Olympic Games” — which included the Stuxnet virus that wrecked Iranian centrifuges at its Natanz plant, setting the country’s nuclear program back.

American officials revealed for the first time that Stuxnet was developed by the United States and Israel.

When Stuxnet became public in 2010 after a programming error allowed it to “escape” Natanz, Obama and his team gathered to consider whether the project had become fatally compromised:

“Should we shut this thing down?” Mr. Obama asked, according to members of the president’s national security team who were in the room.

Told it was unclear how much the Iranians knew about the code, and offered evidence that it was still causing havoc, Mr. Obama decided that the cyberattacks should proceed. In the following weeks, the Natanz plant was hit by a newer version of the computer worm, and then another after that. The last of that series of attacks, a few weeks after Stuxnet was detected around the world, temporarily took out nearly 1,000 of the 5,000 centrifuges Iran had spinning at the time to purify uranium.

The revelations come amid reports of a new computer virus deployed against Iran, dubbed “Flame.” Flame appears to be at least five years old, and officials said was not part of Olympic Games, though declined to say whether the U.S. was responsible for the attack.

According to the Times, Obama was “acutely aware” that Olympic Games was pushing the U.S. into new territory and “repeatedly expressed concerns that any American acknowledgment that it was using cyberweapons…could enable other countries, terrorists or hackers to justify their own attacks.”

“We discussed the irony, more than once,” one of his aides said. Another said that the administration was resistant to developing a “grand theory for a weapon whose possibilities they were still discovering.” Yet Mr. Obama concluded that when it came to stopping Iran, the United States had no other choice.

If Olympic Games failed, he told aides, there would be no time for sanctions and diplomacy with Iran to work. Israel could carry out a conventional military attack, prompting a conflict that could spread throughout the region.

Still, Obama reportedly impressed upon aides the risks in using cyberweapons:

In fact, no country’s infrastructure is more dependent on computer systems, and thus more vulnerable to attack, than that of the United States. It is only a matter of time, most experts believe, before it becomes the target of the same kind of weapon that the Americans have used, secretly, against Iran.

The Times piece was adapted from correspondent David Sanger’s book, “Confront and Conceal: Obama’s Secret Wars and Surprising Use of American Power,” to be published Tuesday. Read the full article here.

The US was going to become a target of the same kind of weapons whether we use them or not. Like any other weapon, the more we use it the better we become at using it and defending against it. It is clear that Barry has simply continued what Bush put in motion. More drones is a no brainer. Cyber warfare is a no brainer. Both save lives, our lives. Obama fails terribly by refusing to capture and interrogate just so he can avoid the same criticisms he continuously belched out against Bush, and that will cost lives…our lives.

The new technology is beam weapons. Put in the GPS coordinates and shoot right through the earth. Yell “Clean!; it was a naturally occuring earth quake.” Things like HAARP have made this a new ball game.
BTW: There is the allegation that the 2011 tsunami in Japan was caused by the US exploding 51 nuclear devices in the trenches north of Japan. Just waited for the right moment to do it.

Like everything else it will be thrown into a supreme Court fight while obama goes on and declares himself the President based on early voting. Urban votes will win the day for him and statewide Senate Candidates. With the help of the bogus George Soros owned and Union employed voting machines he may get the first 100% Supermajority in the history of the Universe.

If this report is accurate, Obama should be impeached immediately. This is an Act of War which the Congress did not sanction. Obama’s use of power, in this case, in many other cases related to our foreign relations, and in his use of executive orders, exceed the authority of the presidency…meanwhile, Congress fiddles while he acts like an emperor. The Republicans are afraid of being labeled racists and there is not one honorable, patriot among the Democrats. Expect the Iranians to run to the UN, where the Chinese and Russians are just waiting to bring American down a peg or two.

Of course, the New York Times is not completely altruistic in it’s actions. Reading the NYT article, it appears that they are hawking a new book, “Confront and Conceal: Obama’s Secret Wars and Surprising Use of American Power,” by David Sanger (who, ironically, is also the author of the NYT article. Originally, the Bush plan for the virus was as a delaying tactic towards a different end… While this is meant to show how “tough” Obama is, put it into proper perspective. He was forced to resort to it due to his utter failure at “negotiations with Iran with NO pre-conditions” (remember that from his 2008 campaign???). There was actually a much better plan in place left by the Bush administration that Obama nixed in favor of his no-preconditions direct talks with Iran plan, (and in conjunction with another ill-advised campaign promise) that, upon failure, caused him to have to resort continuing the virus as a delaying tactic with no clear plan of what to do after that.

An interesting side-note to this is that in early 2008 the media almost unknowingly and unwittingly outed the virus project; but that’s another story for another time…

Obama has no military background, no friends or relatives who are former or current military, and no concept of secrecy or honor. Obama’s inability to keep his mouth shut is appalling, and puts our troops in danger.. But it is a perfect match for the rest of his behavior.
My reaction upon reading this headline was to loudly chant “USA, USA, USA”. After reading the story, I feel the same way I do about his claiming to have “killed Bin Laden”. He (and his minions) will occasionally be dragged kicking and screaming by the Joint Chiefs into doing the right thing, but they will do it only to use it for political gain (”If we do this, it will strengthen your position during the election”) Especially when they make sure the military absentee ballots don’t get counted. So what was Manning’s crime? He leaked docuuments that corroborated what the world already knew, namely, that Obama is a brain transplant gone wrong, a chicken in black, but no Johnny Cash. Meanwhile, AMERICA’S enemies at Club Gitmo get pillows and blankets and recently, a $750T soccer field. It sucks to be a dictator’s enemy.

I am reminded of one of the sayings from WWII, “loose lips sink ships.” As members of the intelligence community are saying, it is frightening to see an administration divulge state secrets for political reasons. However, I don’t understand how divulging US involvement in Stuxnet along with Israeli assistance could help garner Jewish support. Seemingly the only secrets this administration is able to keep secret are the ones involving how they will steal the election in November.

The left and especially the anti-war “Bush” hating left (including the extreme right Paul crowd) have always said the “State Secrets” are a way for [bad men] to cover up bad things (mistakes, a way to abuse/tear apart the Constitution, war crimes, crimes in general… etc).

That’s exactly right… [bad men]. I don’t include Bush in that [bad man] category… never did. Obama said as part of his platform that he would be transparent and reform the “supposed abuses” as a way to curry favor with the Bush hating crowd (anti-war left and right alike). And he hasn’t disappointed to the detriment of our nation and our national security.

Sometimes (many times) our elected leaders should have the leadership, honor and ability to shut their damn mouths. Not every detail of what our country does and needs to do to keep us safe should or has to be divulged. Good men with good intentions and leadership ability know this, bad men don’t. I submit that Obama is a bad man with bad intentions, ulterior motives and zero leadership ability. But I’m preaching to the choir… as we all know this to be true.

It is criminal to release these details. The only reason is an attempt to bolster his sagging poll numbers. Nothing is more important to this charlatan than re-election.

Agree. He can’t run on his record, so maybe destroying American security is their new form of “ social justice ” / aka revenge .

Yeah and just wait until the poll numbers even show him he will not be re-elected.
Then the destruction of America, by his hands, will be at full throttle!

1.“Obama decided to accelerate the program”….because it’s an election year.
2.”started under President George W. Bush in 2006″….and if it goes south he can be blamed.
    3. Do we really need to tell the world about our cyberweapons? No…see #1.

So just what is the reason that the US would divulge this cyber attack on another country? Could Obama want himself to be seen as proactive against Iran to get the Jewish vote this fall and dampen his anti Israel persona? Nothing like compromising national security, revealing sensitive info, and implicating Israel all to get re elected.

Yes… read the article (and a couple other sources) a couple times to see what the justification supposedly was for the administration to admit to this. Unclear. Will go with your assessment.

Providing this program‘s inside information to the press by the Obama administration in order to bolster Obama’s sagging image is criminal, anti American, and pure treason. Congress should impeach the president if he cleared the release of the information, and investigate this serious and malignant leak.
