Report: VA Teacher Told 6th Graders Republicans Are ‘Stupid’ & Only Care About ‘Wealthy People’

Republicans are “stupid.”
That loaded statement was purportedly delivered to sixth-graders by their public school teacher in Fairfax County, Virginia. The educator, Kristin Martin, is said to have railed against conservatives, allegedly telling students that “[Republicans] don’t care about anyone but wealthy people and businesses.”
These comments, reportedly made at Powell Elementary School as voters were flocking to the school to cast ballots on Super Tuesday, are certainly eyebrow-raising. The Daily Caller spoke with students who were apparently in the classroom that day.

“It all started when this disabled kid came in and named all the Republicans candidates for Super Tuesday,” one student said. “She [Martin] said to him, ‘I don’t like them, I think that they are stupid.’”
One mother, a Republican who is going unnamed in an effort to protect her child from retaliation, claims that the teacher’s words constitute indoctrination.
“I felt like the teacher was brainwashing naive, young children to believe people like me, my family and, to a certain extent, my daughter, were stupid,” the woman told The DC in an e-mail.
According to the woman’s daughter, Martin also made it known that she had voted for President Barack Obama and that the Democrats tend to do more “for the community and schools.”

After learning about the incident, the mother promptly contacted Linda Clifford, the school’s principal. Via e-mail, Clifford responded with an apology, writing:
I am so sorry that Miss Martin used such very poor judgment. I will certainly address it with her tomorrow. I share your assessment of the situation that there is no room for that kind of comment in a school setting. Thank you so much for bringing this serious situation to my attention.
Students report that Martin did, indeed, apologize to students the next day, claiming that she “shouldn’t have shared” the opinions with the class. You can read more about this incident over on The DC. It follows another report about a middle school in the same county that allegedly encouraged students to do opposition research on GOP candidates.

Posted on April 6, 2012 at 11:50amI teach in Fairfax County in a school where the teachers represent a wide range of political views. In fact, I learned about The Blaze from one of my colleagues. There are some teachers, liberals and conservatives, who just can’t seem to keep their politics out of the classroom and they are a frustration to the rest of us. It gets worse every election year, too. It’s not just bad for students, it’s bad for teachers: we have to work together and it‘s hard to want to work with a colleague who says that you’re stupid.
Teach your children to think critically about the information they’re receiving at school. Support teachers who do the same. Its not enough to eliminate the bad: you have to uphold the good.

Living in Fairfax and being a LIBERAL teacher, you are complicit in MS13, Crips, Bloods, Mexican Mafia, and creeping Sharia- all being alive and well too, not just your coolaide tendancies. You have to think and do things a certain way to maintain your precious role as the private sector has zero to offer you. We used to look up to judges and educators. Do you see any correlation to the current view as panderers and union tools instead of equatible moderators and decent educators? You are not a fan of Moran or Kaine right? You cannot think or vote moderate or right in order to maintain the staus quo of your area or employment. NOVA sucks by the way; in proximity to the swamp and govt think-speak. I remember when the Moohamad dude was shooting people and every where you went there were liberals hiding behind their cars to fuel, jumping at trucks back firing, running from the metro to their compact cars in groups of lemmings. Liberal teachers produced him.

Posted on April 6, 2012 at 12:23pmI think that the teacher here made two mistakes: the first was to express her political opinion, the second was to insult Republicans. IMO the second is by far the worse one: it demonstrates that you have no problem being a bully in the classroom and does not uphold the standards of civil discourse which are the backbone of education.
As for expressing your political opinion, I understand why, as a matter of policy, one shouldn’t do it, and I do not discuss politics with my students. However, I sometimes think it would be better if teachers COULD let students know what their political perspective is, because even in the best of cases it can produce a bias. Subjects like High School English, all levels of History, Environmental Science and Biology have serious political dimensions. By hiding our politics, we make it harder for students to call us on our biases, which is something I would welcome in my classroom if it wouldn’t threaten to become a serious distraction.
For instance, if you’re an American Lit teacher covering the first half of the 20th century, you could assign The Jungle, The Grapes of Wrath, or Atlas Shrugged. All three are important books that changed the face of American culture. All three are well-written (Grapes of Wrath is probably the best from an artistic perspective, but they’re all acceptable). However, all three were written to advance particular political ideologies as well. They include characters who deliver ideological talking points.

Posted on April 6, 2012 at 12:27pmWe don’t need no stinkin cameras. The Blaze is full of posters who do not really care for freedom. You are for collectivism, you just do not care for Obama’s style of collectivism. You people amaze me. You are all blinded by your hatred to Democrats that you do not really see that the Republicans have done the same thing. They are the same party anymore. Not to worry though, there is a movement with the young who are being indoctrinated with liberty and freedom. Paul is their catalyst and they are growing exponentially. Even if Paul does not get the nomination, he has started a fire that cannot be put out. The young, indoctrinated with liberty, will take over at some point. The GOP is going to continue to slide toward liberalism and one day be just a memory of a party who lost their way.
Report Post »Liberal_Teacher
Posted on April 6, 2012 at 12:32pmSo even if I keep my political affiliation hidden, it might well be reflected in which of these three books I choose to teach. The Jungle ends with a speech about how Jesus was a socialist. The heroes of The Grapes of Wrath end up as Communists. The heroes of Atlas Shrugged are free-market capitalists.
All these books are long, too, which means that teaching all of them isn’t an option. An English teacher’s ideology is likely to be reflected in the choice of literature. It is, of course, possible to “teach the controversy,” as people like to say, and provide both viewpoints, but the fact of the matter is that a conservative teacher is going to do a better job of presenting conservative points and a liberal teacher is going to do a better job of presenting liberal points. In some ways, I would feel more comfortable if my students knew where I was coming from and saw it as a legitimate subject of discussion rather than all of us pretending that politics don’t influence pedagogy. As an adult, I would prefer to know if the person I’m learning history from considers themselves a conservative or a libertarian or a liberal or an anarchist or whatever else. That way I can contextualize the information they’re presenting.
That’s just wishful thinking on my part. In practice, discussing your political opinions is a bad idea. I’m not sure if this teacher managed to “brainwash” any kids, but she sure managed to make some of them hate her. Not good for educatio

You nailed it. There are plenty of Progressive Republicans – people who don’t want to be told how to live their lives, but can’t wait to tell others how to live theirs.
There are an inordinate number of people on TheBlaze who are like that, but that’s because there are so many AMERICANS today who have the same philosophy. Hell, there are so many people in the WORLD who are like that. It’s human nature. Freedom is not the norm, it’s the exception, for this very reason. People naturally want to enforce their viewpoint on others. It‘s harder to yield to other’s point of view and allow it to exist. It‘s harder to allow behavior that’s different from yours.

I question your assertion. If what you say is true, why you do think so many people here identify themselves as conservatives or libertarians rather than Republican? Most here are somewhere between conservative and full on libertarian, and see the corruption in both parties pretty clearly.
It’s DC itself, and honestly, the entire system that is corrupt these days. It doesn’t matter which party one hails from, the machine is too big to change. I don’t know what the answer is, but I’m pretty sure Ron Paul, though he has some *really* good ideas, wouldn’t be enough to change it by himself, even if he were president.

Posted on April 6, 2012 at 5:59pmthere is a huge difference between expressing what is the best way to live and behave (as in the Biblical Truths and principles) as a description for success and going to the legislature to enact laws to determine what foods are best, what speech is best, what insurance is best, what fuel is best, which vehicles are best… the list is endless.
Which political party professes suggestions? Which party enacts legislation?.
There is a vast difference between conservatives (which are best represented by the GOP) offering suggestions about the best course all the while allowing you to “chose poorly” than the leftists who truely want to enact laws to ban any and everything the elite deme unsavory.
The old adage is still true…
If I as a conservative, think that vegetarianism is right, I don’t eat meat. On the other hand if a leftist thinks that vegetarianism is the right thing to do, eating meat is banned.
A conservative will try to convince you that vegan is good, a leftist will demean you while calling you all manner of vile, evil things and ban all other thinking. Now which is more tolerant? I put up with you or the meme of the letist that to be tolerant you must agree with me?
How tolerant can it be to “put up with” that which you already agree?

Some of us struggle against a raging tide of ignorance and corrupt leaders who are themselves forcing public schools to teach lies. We do our best to teach what is correct with the knowledge that our jobs may be on the line for telling students to verify what they hear, to research and to question and form their own opinions. Unfortunately in this day and age these children are lambs to the slaughter. It‘s very hard to teach in public education when you only have the truth on your side and people constantly damning you when it’s the system. Don’t put all teachers in the same group. Some of us are just as frustrated. Report Post »I agreed with you until you said a teacher couldn’t have a student read “The Jungle”, “The Grapes of Wrath” AND “Atlas Shrugged” because these 3 books are long so you would have to choose just 1 for your students to read.
Are you serious? By the time I left Grammar School I had read over 1,000 books. Though it has been 57 years, I still remember my 3rd grade teacher grabbing my arm and shaking me because she said I read TOO MUCH since I always read when I had nothing else to do. I still participated in sports and school yard games but books were a magical world for me. Though I’m now 65 I still read at least a book a week and often several.
Expecting a student to read 3 books – The Jungle read aloud would take 16 hours, The Grapes of wrath at 21 hours and Atlas Shrugged at 63 hours isn’t much considering reading them would take 1/2-2/3 the time reading them aloud. In a school year its only 1/2 hour per school day read aloud but reading would be 15-20 minutes a school day, its far less time than watching a 1/2 hour TV show on school days. I listen to audio books 4+ hours a day so all 3 would take me 25 days.
Kids spend more time texting/playing computer games each mo.
When politicians admit they didn’t READ a bill they voted on (Obamacare) because it was 1,041 pages (425,116 words) what do you expect from students? Atlas Shrugged has 645,000 words. At the same speed the bill can be read in 30 hrs. They could do that during bill’s debate.

Report Post »In ‘04 Kaufman v. McCaughtry ruled that atheists enjoy the same rights and protections under the First Amendment as theists do. I believe a group of inmates wanted a reading group and were denied by a circuit court. They then won an appeal arguing that theistic inmates had been granted similar requests by the prison and that they should not be treated differently because they were not theists. The case decided that any protections given by the establishment clause applied to religious and atheist alike.
As for evolution and atheism and an 80 year old handbook, who cares? If your religion feels threatened by evolution, well sorry about your luck. I find that many people who believe in and worship fairies don’t have the necessary intellect to understand evolution, although the Catholic Church and several non-fundamentalist sects have no problem with evolution. If it makes you feel better to attach evolution to the filthy atheists, well we’ll take it. You can credit us with heliocentrism as well if you wish, I seem to remember the church condemning that one for about 500 years. Report Post »Um, I would have to beg to differ. I worked a gig that dealt directly with a Ford union puke that threatened a HR puke, spoke of exact means to dispose of body and what weapons he would use to do so. 45 days of arbitration when the dude should have been locked up, but kept on shamming getting the union wage while a person hid in fear for their life. Did I mention he was a union puke doing the union thug thing while shamming and getting paid? And on top of that the dolt never knew he was under the microscope the whole time, just revelled in his thuggery while shamming. Not a prototypical union shop guy sure, but he knew really well how to work the system while threatening a decent person he really, really wanted to put down for personal reasons.
My shop steward said you are a tool of the union no matter what personal thoughts you may have, the union owns you. Kudos on your being owned. On another unrelated topic, I have seen union handouts on which doc to see when you file your claim as they are shammer friendly, and if it progresss beyond basic shamming, which vulture lawyer to seek advice from. Great system. Pro shammers shop #666?

Report Post »I am willing to bet your union dues go to furthering the communist agenda. I bet The pay your money to Obama’s reelection. All unions are bad. They started off good, but once they accomplished their original goals they have just been creating havoc ever since to justify their continued existence. Posted on April 6, 2012 at 11:05amSerious changes need to be made at our public schools. Everyone needs to realize these have become, generally speaking, indoctrination centers and they are not that interested in really educating them like they are supposed to and how they used to. It’s not only indoctrination of liberal ideology, it’s also Islam. More and more Muslims, via help of CAIR, have infiltrated them all over the country and having assemblies where they have a Muslim “preach” about Islam, have them do chants, etc. & teach it in class under the guise of “multiculturism”….we have cases here in Texas of that. Everyone needs to check up on their schools, teachers – if any of this comes about, file a report, take it to court, complain to your Reps., become members of the School Board, whatever. We must fight this and do what we can about ending the unions, etc. ACT !!!!

Posted on April 6, 2012 at 10:58amAnd if these indoctrinators don‘t get our children in the elementary and high schools they’ll get them in the colleges!
Bill Ayers and his felon wife Bernadine Dohrn has been involved in the schools for years despite their past criminal records of blowing up police stations and the Pentagon in the 60s and 70s. How can a past felon, Bernardine Dohrn, be an Associate Professor of Law, I’d like to know?
The whole educational system in just a means for indoctrinating children and young adults to the “Progressive” policies of the Left! It is why our country is in such a mess to begin with. And now the Communists and Marxists are in the White House and they’ve allied themselves with the Muslim Brotherhood, saying the Muslim Brotherhood is a secular organization when they know this organization gave birth to Hamas and al Qaeda and many other terrorist arms and they are far more dangerous because they hide what they really are and say they are for “peace” and “justice” just like they’re renaming their party in Egypt! Just like the Marxists they are wolves in sheeps clothing, terrorists in suits! And they‘ve infiltrated the schools and all our educational and government systems where they’re indoctrinating and radicalizing our children at a very young age!
This woman should have been fired! She knew precisely what she was doing.

Posted on April 6, 2012 at 11:28amYears ago, it became “necessary” to get a college education. You “can’t get ahead” if you don’t go to college. We have forsaken the “trades.” Some people are just good with their hands, can fix anything, and can reason anything out. Then, you have the “thinkers” (those who can’t, teach). Well, we’ve herded everyone into the colleges through grants and scholarships in order to indoctrinate the masses. My Dad used to call them “educated boobs.”

Posted on April 6, 2012 at 10:51amOh too bad that didn’t happen at the school my daughter goes too. I’d have called the news, every conservative friend I had with kids in the school, and all the organizations in the state who would share my “concern” and THEN we’d go talk to the principle. No emails, she’d squirm. No half cracked apology, I’d be sitting in every school board meeting until something was REALLY done about the situation.
Of course they only have a couple of months left to try it, then we’re homeschooling. Bummer, I’d love for them to tick off a person who enjoys social media as much as I do.

Posted on April 6, 2012 at 4:27pmexactly my thoughts!! Parents have gotten lazy and/or too trusting. They leave it up to the school systems, daycares, tv, video games and internet to raise their children, and we are seeing the result!! Parents need to be actively involved in teaching their children!! They need to know what their children are being taught, who is teaching them, what they are viewing in their various forms of entertainment. They need to wake up and stop being lazy and naive about what your children are seeing and doing. It is the job of parents to shape their children, train them, teach them and protect them, and protecting them means knowing what their school is teaching them, or homeschooling them yourself!! Parents need to start parenting and advocating for their children, instead of putting them on the school bus and letting school department raise them. They need to be involved and know what is going on in the lives, hearts and minds of their children!!

Secondly, what this lady said was in fact inappropiate, but it was also a mistake. The principle was notified, responded in a correct, quick decisive manner. The teacher was reprimanded and apologized to the class explaining her actions were wrong. What more do you want a pound of flesh and liter of blood? As long as she in the future she does not let her beliefs overtly effect her teaching (ALL teachers let their own beliefs subvertly effect their teaching), then the matter should be closed.
