Reporter Tests New ‘Taser Grenade’ on Himself: ‘Shock and Ow’

It’s a clever title for a puzzling story. But it did produce some great video.
The Daily reporter Justin Rocket Silverman decided to test the new “taser grenade” and its 50,000 volts. Guess what: it hurts. So much so he decided to call his story “Shock and Ow.” Appropriate.
First, Silverman gives the specs of the new weapon for maximum effect:
Fresh out of Taser’s R&D lab in Scottsdale, Ariz., the Taser Grenade, or 40mm HEMI (short for “human electro-muscular incapacitation”) projectile, works much like a grenade. But instead of blasting deadly shrapnel, it releases tiny metal barbs that latch onto skin or clothing, creating a “circuit” for the massive jolt of paralyzing electricity.
Since they can be shot out of the same grenade launchers soldiers attach to their M-16s, and cops use to fire tear gas canisters, these powerful projectiles allow authorities to “tase” someone from afar.
The new projectile means law enforcement or military officials can tase someone from as far away as 900 ft. And even at that distance, it leaves burn marks on the skin.
This is what 50,000 volts surging through someone’s body looks like. But, a little disclaimer: officials didn’t want to fire the actual grenade at Silverman, so instead they hooked him up to the taser’s shocking (in the voltage sense of the word), and powerful, guts:

small, easily held in the hand, and unseen by the punk invading my ring of dominance

Posted on April 4, 2011 at 3:06pmI have a friend who is a LEO and a taser trainer. All officers who take the training are required to get “tased” as part of the certification before they can carry it. It would explain why many officers are somewhat reluctant to employ it, but they will if you insist on volunteering. The security firm I work for is considering using them, I’m really not looking forward to it,really.

Posted on April 4, 2011 at 2:24pmI’m curious why this is called a grenade?
Report Post »A grenade is an area-of-effect weapon (hits everyone in a blast radius).
This is a remotely deployed taser and it affects only one target.

Posted on April 4, 2011 at 2:17pmHere’s the problem I have with Tasers: They are potentially lethal. As a law-abiding citizen, I hope never to be on the receiving end of one of these, but I’ll tell you, from my perspective, they’d be better off shooting me dead then hitting me with one of these, leaving open the possibility I’d ever get out of the lockup.
I consider Tasers to be torture. I also think too many cops think this is a way to impose a little punishment on the people they decide to apprehend. Punishment is not their job.
Love cops… Just not ALL cops.

Posted on April 4, 2011 at 2:30pmI say arm them with whatever it takes. At least the police don’t have to shoot and kill them when they have their freak outs! Why do the POLICE always have to be the ones to defend their actions? How about we question what the evil CRIMINALS are doing?

Posted on April 5, 2011 at 11:55pmits not the voltage, but the wattage that causes problems. The tazers have very low wattage.

Posted on April 4, 2011 at 11:58amWhy is it called the Tazer Grenade? It doesn’t behave anything like a grenade. It doesn’t explode in a storm of tazer probes that incapacitate everyone in the area. It’s just a tazer stuck into a large projectile that they shoot out of a gun.
Report Post »ozchambers
Posted on April 4, 2011 at 2:03pmMy guess is because it is launched using what looked like an M32 grenade launcher and the projectile is shaped just like the grenades it launches as well as the M203 launchers.

Posted on April 4, 2011 at 11:46amDevolop Taser for the military? What the hell for? So that our Soldiers and Marines will be killed like the Federal Agents in Mexico? I was taught in Basic Combat Training if you can wound, so that we would tie up enemy resources in caring for the fallen soldier, but still kill anyway. I guess that our government hates the military so much that they will take their firearms and replace them with non-lethal toys.

Posted on April 4, 2011 at 12:01pmOK, this is what I learned – if I hear anyone saying taser, taser, taser, – lay down quickly!!! This is what the military is going to use on citizens if martial law is ever ordered!!! OUCH!! http://maboulette.wordpress.com

Posted on April 4, 2011 at 12:08pmLet’s be fair. Nonlethal weaponry has been in development for decades. And with the rise of “civil” disobedience globally putting the lie to the effectiveness of current less than lethal armaments, I’d be eager to find something new too.
My concern is the implication that our military will be used to restore order either because law enforcement is unable or unwilling.

Posted on April 4, 2011 at 12:23pmThey are not equipping the military with this technology so it can be employed in a foreign theater of war. It is being deployed so it can be used here in our cities (and towns) for non-lethal crowd control. When TSHTF, they’re gonna need it.
Report Post »One may ask, “If it gets bad, will US troops fire on US citizens?”
No need now. Taser will be on the front lines to help put down any revolt.
