Reporter’s Gibberish May Signal Stroke on Live TV

Initially, the video caused some to chuckle. But now it may show the moments a reporter had a stroke on live TV.

Last night, CBS 2 News (Los Angeles) reporter Serene Branson was reporting live from the Grammy Awards. While explaining her report, however, her speech quickly degenerated into slurred words and gibberish.

“‘Well, a very, very heavy burtation tonight,’ she starts to say, but her words quickly melt into indecipherable sounds,” the New York Daily News reports. “She struggles to speak for nearly 10 seconds before the video cuts away to pre-recorded Grammy coverage.”

According to the Sun, Branson was taken to the hospital after the report and may have suffered a stroke. The Daily News notes that in the past she has received two Emmy nominations.

I heard a radio reporter out of Florida having the same problem a few weeks ago. About 15 minutes later he was back on the air with no apparent problem. I think maybe he was having what’s called a mini stroke. I hope this is all this poor girl was having. A wake-up call to get appropriate treatment before anything really serious occurs. We should pray for her.

A stroke is horrible. I was with my mother when she had one. The saddest part was watching her try to carry on like everything was ok. It wasn’t. She lost the use of her right side and never spoke anything but gibberish until the day she died twelve years later. Twelve years of living hell for her. That reporter woman is young. I pray that she’ll be ok. I pray the lord to let her go if she won’t.

My father had a stroke and never regained his speech. It is a devastating thing to happen to anyone. The individual understands and wants to verbalize but either nothing comes out or what comes out is gibberish. It is sad and is far from a political exploit posting such an event. It should be shown and people should recognize the event as serious and needing immediate medical attention. I pray for her and her family. She has youth on her side.

So this person may be having a serious neurological episode, and The Blaze posts the video so we can watch it? How sick is that? Is this really the kind of journalism people are looking for?

And just so no one thinks I am being partisan here, the HuffPo picked up this story too. Frankly, its disgusting, not to mention incredibly embarrasing to this reporter, whether she had a stroke or not.

      Publiuspencilman,

You’re not really serious, are you? This has nothing to do with “our worse natures”. It’s reality TV at its best. Is it instructive? Is it reality? Does it raise the public’s awareness of strokes?

The answer is yes to all three. The reporter never intended for her broadcast to be a public health segment, but it turned out that way. There is no shame in a stroke as it was not likely to have been her fault.

I can remember that, when I had my stroke, the thought running through what was left of my mind was, “This is remarkably incovenient”. No pain, no confusion. Just part of the system came offline, that had never come offline before.

You don’t need to be protective. The victim gets that way naturally. As I recall, President Wilson had very similar symptoms during a speech when he had his stroke. Of course, we weren’t around to see it, but this lady provides an almost classic display of a TIA/Stroke affecting the speech center while it was in progress.

The difference between Wilson and this reporter, is that there are some great therapies that can prevent or treat strokes that weren’t around back then. Think of it, man has been knocking around on the Earth for a bazillion years, and only in the last 50 have we had the ability to counter that which kills plenty of us.

Clot busters, Coumadin/Warfarin, Lovanox. It‘s all good when you’re battling the alternative. Sounds like she came off without any permanent damage, though she’ll no doubt be going through what will hopefully be life changing modifications. We play the hand we’re dealt, and the more knowledge we have re. the threats facing us, the better chance we have of surviving for an extended period and dying of something really interesting after a long life. So don’t get outraged, without being invited by the reporter. She may feel completely different about the publicity than you do.

I felt great but suddenly without any warning signs my right side went completely limp and I lost all ability to speak.
