Reports of 1,000 Citizens Killed: Why Was Obama Silent for 9 days on Gadhafi and Libya?

UPDATE – Wednesday 5:30pm EST. President Obama finally spoke out about the violence and killings in Libya. While Mr. Obama made many strong statements about the deplorable killings of protesters, what should be noted is what he did not say. The President never mentioned Muammar Qaddafi by name. The question remains, WHY?
Additionally of interest on the question of why it took so long? WH Press Secretary Jay Carney lets us know it was a “SCHEDULING” ISSUE.
The original story appears below.
As Human Rights Watch reports 223 citizens have been killed protesting on the streets of Libya, an Italian news agency claims that number is more than four times higher with over 1000 dead in the streets, cut down by government troops.
Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said Wednesday that estimates of 1,000 people killed in Libya during violent protests against the government.
Since last Friday’s brief written statement from the President, decrying Libya‘s violence against it’s citizens, Mr. Obama has been silent as the bodies pile up in the streets. The State Department did issue orders on Monday for family members of embassy personnel and non-essential workers to leave the country and Secretary of State Clinton said the following:
“I think that the message today is very clear and unambiguous from the entire international community. There is no ambivalence. There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that the violence must stop and that the government of Libya has a responsibility to respect the universal rights of all of its citizens, and to support the exercise of those rights.”
A strong statement, but NOT a Presidential statement. And Obama was out in public yesterday, appearing in Ohio speaking to small business owners, but made no mention of the four biggest stories of the day. Mark Knoller from CBS was in the audience and noted the omissions in a tweet:
The BBC reports that Peru was the first country to cut ties to Libya because of their attacks on protesting citizens. Peruvian President Alan Garcia was very clear in his statement:
“Peru expresses its most energetic protest at the repression carried out by the Libyan dictatorship of Muammar Gaddafi against his people, who are demanding democratic reforms to change a government led by the same person for 40 years.”
French President Nicolas Sarkozy stood up two days ago condemned the violence in Libya, calling it “an unacceptable use of force.” Sarkozy also urged the European Union to stand up and impose economic sanctions on Gadhafi.
After Obama’s speech yesterday in Ohio, new press secretary Jay Carney was questioned about the President’s silence. He deferred to previous statements and said that he did not anticipate the President addressing Libya.

Why, look at that…Yes, they did:

…and didn’t Barry plan to donate or did donate $400,000 to Q‘dafy’s charity in 2009?

Food prices are going through the roof…cotten is higher than it was during the all time price during the civil war for god’s sake…flour, wheat, corn, all are way up in cost….I can name quite a few other things Beck was ridiculed for all of which have come to pass or they are in the process of coming to pass as we speak (type)…..So …name me ONE other media person that has even come close to Beck’s track record…I’ll save you the time…there isn’t one, not a single one and THAT is part of the problem with the US MSM……there are only 2 sides of coin…one is the truth , the other is the lie. Can you provide any links to back that information up? I’m not asking in a rude, sarcastic kind of way, I’m genuinely interested in reading that information first hand. Thanks!

Posted on February 23, 2011 at 5:52pmNow it’s unfortunate that Obama refused to speak the issue of unrest in the ME directly or the slaughtered American hostagges. The man is clearly in over his head. However, GB this afternoon acts as if we should send the troops into Lybia and oh while we are over there bomb the Iranian ships which recently passed through the Suez Canal in International Waters.
I’m so dissapointed w/ GB. It’s so obvious that he would never be a Ron/Rand Paul supporter because he wants War now and War forever in the ME! He has done such a good job exposing evil doers in our gov’t over the past two years but he is now losing all credibility by insisting on more US interevention in the ME.
Why can’t he just shut up about the ME. You don‘t see China or Russia trying to stick their noses in everyone’s business.. My goodness don’t we have enough problems here at home GB???

Posted on February 23, 2011 at 6:21pmCNN’s senior White House correspondent Ed Henry says that unnamed US administration officials have told him that White House had feared Americans in Libya could be taken hostage if President Obama took an aggressive approach to Libya. That is partly why Mr Obama held off speaking on the crisis until late Wednesday,

Posted on February 23, 2011 at 7:58pm@ TECH – If you watched Beck, you weren’t paying much attention. Beck wasn’t calling for war in the Middle East – he was pointing out the complete lack of consistency in our President’s response to different uprisings. From what I understand, Beck is a Libertarian – Libertarians support offensive military action only when needed for direct defense of our nation or allies. They also reject US forgeign intervention in terms of military or economic aid. In all the years I’ve been watching Glenn, he’s never once called for our military involvement in any conflict… that isn‘t to say he doesn’t support our troops once involved. He‘s always seemed to put forth that same Libertarian principle that it is not our job to be the world’s police force.
What Beck was urging for today was that our president be consistent in supporting the people of Libya and Iran, just as he did with Egypt. Unfortunately, Obama seems to have no interest in taking a stand against all repressive regimes – I guess some lives are worth more than others in his view.

Posted on February 23, 2011 at 8:06pmAfter more than two years on the job Obama is still incompetent and nothing more than an empty Chicago mob suit. The pockets are filled with ACORN hulls which are cared for by SEIU workers. Rham is gone and the president doesn’t seem to be able to function well. Axelrod seems to be busy trying to figure out how to get him re-elected. Vote! Every chance you get. Let’s get these incompetents out of office. Meanwhile, Libyans die and our own citizens are terrorized by Ghadafi’s mob!

Posted on February 23, 2011 at 8:52pmRogue: I wish I could agree with you but I don’t. While GB may be a libertarian at heart.. I’ve heard him say it but he gives all apearances of someone that thinks that the US Armed Forces are the Global Police. Besides there is no denying that FOX News is home to the Neo-Con and FOX more than any other Media pushes for our Internvention into these situations that have nothing to do with our sercurity whatsoever but perhaps an allys security? lol
As much as I outright hate Obama, I don’t like the way FOX is treating him on this issue.. What the hell is he suppose to do?? Send in the troops and jeopardize the lives of American civilians over there? Was he suppose to continue to support Mubarak in Egypt? No GB has been speaking out of both sides of his mouth conerning the uprisings in the ME and it‘s not good I’m telling you.. He’s losing credibility.
BTW, not the first condemnation of RedMeats comment on Muslims killing Muslims being a good thing? lol Such hypocrites.

Posted on February 23, 2011 at 11:20pmQadaffi is paying African mercenaries to mow down crowds. He also accuses “those with beards” of wanting to take him down and wonders “where they were before”. Qadaffi is crazy like a fox. He gives only lip service to Islam, has never attacked Israel and while he is plenty rich, he has shared oil money with the Libyan people. Libyans have 3X the per capita income of Egyptians.
We must also remember ancient Carthage (which the Romans destroyed via a Mohammed-like false peace treaty) was in Libya.Take notice of Qadaffi’s round hat — it is not Arab or Islamic. It is round and comes from the lineage of Noah’s 2nd son, Japeth. Every time Qadaffi wears that hat, it is a big f*** you to the Islamists.
To understand ancient history is to know current friend from foe. This historic interview on Israel National Radio deciphers all. http://www.marcrubin.com/judean-eve.ivn

Report Post »after all, she is the last top u s diplomat to meet with khadafi.
libya is a prime supplier of crude oil.
russia has already offered to buy, at market price, all of libya’s crude and natural gas.
perhaps the best way is to let a sovereign nation fix their own problems and stay out of the messy mix.
when the administration criticizes israel for violations of agreements, the administration is roundly booed.
when the administration criticizes egypt for heavy-handed tactics in the early days of their “revolt”, for lack of a more decorous term, the administration is told to keep hands off a fledgling democratic movement. but then is chastised for not doing more.
the middle east is a powder keg – that is indisputable.
to think that one nation, even a super power like the u s, can effect a move to a democratic or republic form of government is naive.
these nations, even given all their advancements over the years, are still tribal in nature.
we need to realize that we cannot change 100% of the world in our image.
