Suspect in ‘Dark Knight Rises’ Shooting Identified

Batman shooting suspect James Holmes

Federal law enforcement officials have identified the suspect in the mass movie theater shooting in Aurora, Colo. as 24-year-old James Holmes, according to the Associated Press.

(Complete Blaze coverage of the ‘Dark Knight’ shooting)

Officials believe Holmes, described as a “white American,“ is responsible for killing 12 people and injuring dozens more at the opening of the new Batman film ”The Dark Knight Rises.” Witnesses said the shooter was wearing a mask and set off some sort of gas in the theater before opening fire.

Holmes is in police custody. According to ABC News, the FBI said he has no significant criminal history. Officials do not believe the shooting is tied to any terror groups.

Police said he was found near a car behind the theater with a gas mask and an assault rifle, shotgun and two pistols, according to the AP.

Police have given no information on a possible motive, and said there is no evidence of a second shooter.

According to ABC, a San Diego woman identifying herself as Holmes’ mother said she had not been aware of the shooting but “immediately expressed concern that her son may have been involved.”

“You have the right person,” she said. “I need to call the police…I need to fly out to Colorado.”

U.S. Army spokesman George Wright posted on Twitter Holmes has no record of service in the Army, Army Reserve or Army Guard.

A spokeswoman for the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver told the Associated Press Holmes had been a student there until withdrawing last month. CNN reported Holmes had been pursuing a Ph.D in neuroscience.

Police released a statement from Holmes’ family in San Diego, stating: “Our hearts go out to those who were involved in this tragedy and to the families and friends of those involved. We ask that the media respect our privacy during this difficult time. Our family is coopering with authorities in both San Diego, California and Aurora, Colorado.”

UPDATE:

The AP has new information as a result of recently-held press conference:

Police said 71 people in all were shot.

Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said the gunman wore a gas mask, a ballistic helmet and vest as well as leg, groin and throat protectors. He said he had an AR-15 military-style, semi-automatic rifle, a shotgun and two pistols.

While some witnesses said the gunman entered through a side-door emergency exit at the front of the theater, a federal law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Holmes bought a ticket and went into the theater as part of the crowd.

So full of humanity, the both of you.

I can’t “tell you how to feel”, I can suggest perhaps considering sorrow for the murdered and prayers for the children and other people killed as a better action than political lens viewed anger. But clearly, you won’t have that. That’s too bad. I thought the Left was the domain of the emotion driven teeth gnashing haters who view everything through a Soviet political lense. Now I know it’s not a disease restricted to their side of the debate.

If you listened to Beck today you‘d hear he was saying essentially the same thing I’m saying. Oh well. Good luck with living life viewing everything as politics.

I don’t know that there is a connection, but isn’t it funny when Major anti-Firearm ownership bills are about to be signed, we have these mass murders take place. On July 27th, Hillary Clinton is to sign the U.N. Small Arms Treaty, which will essentially gives the U.N. the power to supercede the U.S. Constitution‘s Bill of Rights’ 2nd Amendment and order the registry of ALL Firearms own by private American Citizens, under penalty of a felony charge and jail time. There has been growing concern among Tea Party types and sympathy from non-Tea Party against signing this treaty, which will have the same legal power as a “Constitutional Amendment”, unless the Senator votes to reject it or the President kills it. It might all be just a wild coincidences that this man would going on a killing spree one week before, but one can’t help but wonder!

Yes, extremely interesting that BHO has already jumped to become part of the event! Funny how he picks and chooses what is worthy of great TV time and photo ops. Stay on your toes everyone, there are a lot of good sites that are having people petitioning to have the UN arms vote negated. If you need links, I am sure we can come up with some. I want everyone who has any pull to ask this administration why they cannot go on national TV and tell these roving hyena gangs, to cut it out. People are going to get killed. When they strip an Albertsons in Oregon and a Walmart in Florida, it can happen in your neighborhood anytime. Who is agititating this situation. It is not really random, someone is behind it and I want to know? Soros, BHO, the NBPanthers, these kids are being used for some agenda. Meanwhile the POSPOTUS does not comment on this in any way? What is wrong with this picture? They are not driving lots of cars to these scenes, are they being transported, how does that many people suddenly appear without a lot of commotion, where there are warnings that can be sounded, stores locked down, etc. There are parents with kids and older people just shopping, this is going to end badly. IS the Prez too busy setting up kissing scenes to comment to these hoodlums with a very STRONG warning. Or is he behind it?

One can send one’s thoughts to the victims — and can also immediately see the political mileage that the gun grabbers will go for. (Hint: look at the mileage the Al Sharptons got out of the scene in Florida — let us not wait for facts but, even with facts, let us not distract us from our agenda. One person even said the victim could be his son. Right now we have the same person stating we must protect our people but MORE people have been killed in the USA by illegal aliens at our borders than those in the Colorado movie theater. WHERE is the concern to protect the citizen from illegal aliens?)

Compassion for the Aurora victims — sure. But look at what the media did 18 months ago when a federal judge and a US Congresswoman were killed in Tucson….a rush to blame speech for the killings.

We are quick to sign away our freedoms for so-called “protection.” This shooting will create an opposition to the 2nd amendment, our right to bear arms.

      Who is the Black Bloc?
The black block is a self-styled anarchist tactic. It is not an identifiable organization. It is a method of creating violence and chaos in the streets. They desire to be an effective street-fighting force to oppose the police. They think they’re being bold revolutionaries, when in actuality, they’re cowards hiding behind masks, wearing a terrifying uniform.
That uniform is generally all black clothing, and they often carry dowel rods to which black flags have been affixed.
They start fights with the police, they destroy property, they attack other occupiers, and they give the police an excuse to attack us.

What’s telling is how predictably stupid, fearful, opportunistic and egocentric people behave after an event like this:
“If I go to the movies, I will be shot.” Wrong.
“Therefore, there should be enhanced security at the theater.” Careful what you wish for…. need I remind you of the TSA.
“It’s all about me!” No, it’s not.

“We need to surround movie houses and search young adults.” Wow. This last bit was actually spewed by a mustachioed cop in last night’s FOX Report. Yep. Time to profile the kids. ‘Cause now they are probably carrying bombs, guns and tear gas in addition to drugs and alchohol (which was also insinuated by this fine agent of the state). Never let a good tragedy pass without taking advantage of it, right?

“Guns are bad.” Wrong. Guns are tools.
“All people who have guns are bad and potentially dangerous.” Wrong. Replace ‘guns’ with ‘cars’ (or any other tool).
      THEREFORE
“Only the state should have guns.” Brilliant. Yep, if guns are bad and only bad people have guns, the logical conclusion is to arm only agents of the state. Once again, careful what you wish for.

Too many people are craven little bugs and the media loves it. Disgusting.

Hmm… generally speaking, when only the state is armed, people historically will die in astronomical numbers. See the continent of Africa, SE Asia, WWII era Germany, China, etc.
Murdering dogs should be dealt with swiftly and harshly. Whether it be the private citizen or the state.
I’ll tell you why the state believes it needs assault rifles: To shut you up and shut you down if and when it pleases.
This issue is a little more complex than saying all gun owners are culpable. You assume this kid was even a legal owner. Details are lacking.
Guns, like govt., are tools. Yes, they can be misused. Just like cell phones, cars and ladders. To assert that, because of the misuse of any tool that can and will kill others or get you killed, ALL such holders of any given tool are ‘bad’ and need to be punished is a logic argument that doesn’t pass the smell test.
This is a stupid tragedy. And, as usual, the knee jerk reaction from folks ruled by emotion is to assert something must be banned. This is the zero tolerance creep that makes us less and less free.
As I said, govt. is a tool. Historically, it was envisioned (in the U.S.) as a tool to protect the collective from the one harmful goon such as this shooter. Use it as you would a scalpel. But it’s just so much easier (and apparently comforting) to use it as a sledge and assume ALL all guilty.
Ban guns, cars, ladders, cell phones and prescription drugs; your world wil be a safer place, yes?

Oh, if ONLY no one could buy guns – everyone would be safe. Not True! People who randomly kill people, are NOT law abiding! I would agree that ANYONE on a pysch medication should be banned from owning a gun. Anyone that has to medicated to be “normal” should not be able to purchase a gun. What if the medication is interrupted for some reason? I’m not being political in any way. If a person is delusional when off their medication, that person should NEVER have access to a gun.

No what we need to do is string this guy up by his neck right in front of the theater. let him switch and twitch til he‘s dead and then tell the family you can come and get him down or we’ll dump his butt in the land fill for you. There’s no need for million dollar trial when he was caught red handed without a shadow of a doubt. And even if he has mental issues don’t care publicly hang his butt and make an example of him. The people in that down need to march on the station and drag him out and do it themselves if the police won’t hand him over willingly. Time for real justice give him a rope not free housing, clothing, food, healthcare, dental, gyms, library, legal advice,….ect.

@DianeTX, I agree, but they also want to try to remove all stigmas from being “mentally ill”. They have even put out ads trying to get people to believe that just because mental illness is an “illness” that these people are normal! In some segments of our society people think it is a status symbol to be taking the latest drug for the latest “fad mental illness”.

It scares me to even have such random thoughts go through my mind, and I’ll be looking for more information. Better that it be one of those crisis things to good to waste by the left, than an actual set up. Crazy, I’m praying a nut is befind this and nothing else. What happy thoughts. If they would just enforce the 2000 laws they have on the books, it would cut down on quite a bit of gun crime. Instead, our government ships thousands of firearms to cartels in mexico , and in the same breath, tell me we need “comprehensive gun legislation”. Hell, we just read about the New Black Panther member (that put the bounty on Zimmerman, dead or alive) who, as a convicted felon, was arrested for carrying a firearm and only served 150 days in jail. By the end of the day, there will be countless grandstanding on this tragedy, calling for additional gun control.

Well, considering what is going on in the middle East and that Israel is about to strike out at Iran which may well be the spark in the tinderbox, and considering N. Korea has nukes and a delivery system, and Iran is awfully close, or already does, once WWIII begins over there and N. Korea and/or Iran lobs a few nukes in our upper atmosphere from just outside the boundary waters, it’s a good possibilty 90% of you here in America will be dead within a year (I say “you” because myself and those around me are quite prepared for any roving gangs that happen our way … you may be too and I hope you are, but sadly most are not and will not be).
