Republican Congressman Apologizes to Obama for Awkward ‘Tar Baby’ Comment

Republican Congressman Doug Lamborn Apologizes to Obama for Awkward Tar Baby CommentIt’s not what it sounds like. Or, is it? Colorado congressman Doug Lamborn reportedly stated on AM radio that he was reluctant to associate with the President over the debt deal because he is a “tar baby.”  The comment was made during an interview with radio host David Sirota on AM 760 in Denver, where Lamborn argued that, given the President’s economic policies, being associated with the President could damage a politicians image. The tar baby reference, in this instance then was perhaps not intended maliciously but was rather misused. Nonetheless the Republican lawmaker reportedly issued a written apology to the White House Tuesday for his statement.

Lamborn’s controversial remark was part of this statement:

“Even if some people say, ‘Well, the Republicans should have done this or they should have done that,’ they will hold the President responsible. Now, I don’t want to even have to be associated with him. It’s like touching a tar baby and you get, you get it, you know, you get in and you are stuck and you are part of the problem now and you can’t get away. I don’t want that to happen to us, but if it does, or not, he’ll still get, properly so, the blame because his policies for four years will have failed the American people. Look at the economic numbers.”

According to CNN Lamborn’s office released a statement saying the Congressman gad sent a letter to the White House apologizing and explaining his comment:

“Lamborn was attempting to tell a radio audience last week that the President’s policies have created an economic quagmire for the nation and are responsible for the dismal economic conditions our country faces,” the statement notes, and that while the Congressman regrets the choice of words, he is “confident” the President will accept the apology. He notes he should have used the term “quagmire” instead of “tar baby,” which is a bit of a grammatical stretch, but an improvement.

Mediaite provides the audio for Lamborn’s comments on AM 760 below:

THANK YOU! Why should this guy apologize when the vice president accused millions of law abiding American citizens of being “terrorists”? And look at all of the condescending crap that Odumbo says about us. Neither one of them EVER apologize. Why doesn’t that buffoon-in-blimps-clothing Sheila Jackson Lee have to apologize for any of the absolutely idiotic insults that she hurls at us?

I’ll tell you why: because we live in a world now where white people have fewer rights yet are held to a higher standard than their brethren of other races and ethnicities. The liberal fascists have succeeded in developing a new form of Apartheid: against whites. So we are now the ones who have to bend on one knee and apologize to master.

Wrong is wrong and we shouldn’t tolerate it.

Wikipedia terminology: The Tar-Baby is a doll made of tar and turpentine used to entrap Br’er Rabbit in the second of the Uncle Remus stories. The more that Br’er Rabbit fights the Tar-Baby, the more entangled he becomes. In modern usage according to Random House, “tar baby” refers to any “sticky situation” that is only aggravated by additional contact. The expression tar baby is also used occasionally as a derogatory term for black people (in the U.S. it refers to African-Americans; in New Zealand it refers to Maori), or among blacks as a term for a particularly dark-skinned person. As a result, some people suggest avoiding the use of the term in any context.
Of coarse leave it up to the Obama Administrative run media outlets to immediately apply this term as an expression against black Americans. A true racists would claim it to be derogatory automatically despite the other uses for the term. I do not believe congressman Doug Lamborn intended to use this as such. But thinking of it like this, any Liberal/ RINO who jumps on the Soros/Obama “band wagon” is basically playing with two “tar-babies.“ I believe the term properly describes the ”sticky” situation they are all in. It doesn’t matter what the Progressives say they will always call us Tea Partiers racist, terrorists, etc. But I for one am proud to be a terrorist against the progressive ideology.

What a person means by what they say is more important than the words they use. He clarified the context of his words, so I don’t see why an apology was warranted. Then again I’ve never heard the term “tar baby” so I wouldn‘t know if it’s a bigoted term or not, but I got his point and wasn’t outraged by it. Too many pansies saying sorry for what they mean. It’s always a fake apology anyways.

Absolutely, Alibert. And I am over the atmosphere we have created with constant apologies. Because these apologies amount to nothing more than self-censoring for political preservation, they mean nil. He didn’t say anything untoward yet, here we are. It’s getting OLD.

It is not racist. I still have my Uncle Remus book I read as a child decades ago. It is a compilation of stories told by a black man. The congressman should have referenced though Brer Rabbit “Please Brer Fox, don’t throw me into that briar patch.” Dems seem to concede defeat to the Tea Party while approving the bill and signing it in record time.

To ALIBERTARIAN: If you Google “Uncle Remus Stories” by Joel Chandler Harris you will probably be able to find out about the Tar Baby. “Br’er Rabbit” plays a part, if memory serves me correctly and the Disney song “Zippidy Do Da, Zippidy A” is from the film, I think. My Uncle Albert used to tell us children in our family “Uncle Remus” stories. I am 67 years old so that should tell you how old the stories are……You’re very welcome.

Absolutely agree @ Marci! Liberals have rendered apologies and calls of racism absolutely null and void with their wolf crying and crocodile tears over the recent years. I don’t care who says what about whom anymore and they have themselves to thank for that.

Like anything, pound it mercilessly into the sand it becomes useless and meaningless. Especially political and Hollywood Mea culpa’s. They can shove that strait up Barney Boulevard as far as I‘m concerned no matter who’s dishing them GOP or Liberal Weiners. Makes no diff ;)
