WASHINGTON (AP) – Senate Republicans have blocked an effort to repeal the law banning gays from serving openly in the military.
The partisan vote was a defeat for gay rights groups who saw the provision in a defense authorization bill as their last chance any time soon to overturn the law known as “don’t ask, don’t tell.”
Democrats fell short of the 60 votes needed to advance the legislation, which authorized $726 billion in defense spending. The vote was 56-43.
Maine Republican Sen. Susan Collins had been seen as the crucial 60th vote because she supports overturning the military ban. But Collins sided with her GOP colleagues in arguing that Republicans weren’t given sufficient leeway to offer amendments to the wide-ranging policy bill.
The vote fell mostly along party lines, although Arkansas Democratic Sens. Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor sided with Republicans to block the bill.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., also voted against the measure as a procedural tactic. Under Senate rules, casting his vote with the majority of the Senate enables him to revive the bill at a later date.

Posted on September 21, 2010 at 4:03pmWhy is it that if you are gay or lesbian that you have to throw this in everyones face? I don’t care….it is not my biz! Do heterosexual men and women in the military run around anouncing that they are straight? So why does the homosexual community think they need to anounce this? What does this have to do with serving in the military? If I have someone start work at my biz, do they need to have the right to let everyone know their sexual orientation? It has nothing to do with the job!!
Report Post »SummerB
Posted on September 21, 2010 at 5:06pmThey don‘t have to put it in everyone’s face. Everyone is assumed heterosexual until known otherwise. It’s that there are career military members who are homosexual & don’t reside in baracks & would like to have personal relationships when they are not working, so DADT presents a real problem in their personal lives. Unlike most of us who go to our jobs & then go home to our separate personal lives in separate towns where we don’t spend much time socializing with the people we work with, the Military is a specialized institution; members usually live on bases, & it (the Military) encompasses both the members’ working & personal lives so it would be impossible to keep one’s sexuality hidden.

Posted on September 21, 2010 at 4:00pmit’s not even about the “safety” of the gays in the military. I’ve seen a couple comments about “bashing” or “hazing” it’s about living in a baracks as a unit. I used to serve and I would hate to have a gay room mate. not because i hate gays, but because i don’t want to have to change infront of someone who might be having sexual thoughts about me. same as a woman wouldn‘t want to have to change around a man that she’s forced to room with. gays have the same rights as anyone else in the military. just don‘t talk about another man’s backside and everything is fine.

Posted on September 21, 2010 at 3:59pmUnfortunately this vote will be reported in the media as homophobia and needless jeopardizing of the military by the Right. It will also be speculated that the GOP caved to the pressure of “hate groups”, meaning conservatives, in order to further mischaracterize them as undesireables. Do not doubt that the Dems knew all along that tacking DADT onto this bill would give them fodder for the November campaign.

Sadly I actually like McCain he has spunk certainly more than most Republicans. No but seriously, why would you want to be openly gay in the military? So you can be ridiculed and hated on? I don’t think they would be thought of to highly in the military…maybe its just me.

Posted on September 21, 2010 at 3:40pmRomans 1: 18 – 32 says, “The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – his eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles. Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator – who is forever praised. Amen. Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion. Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.”

Posted on September 21, 2010 at 3:39pmI know that many of you are against allowing grown children of illegal aliens of no fault of their own to become US citizens. But I‘m glad it wasn’t passed here. In my humbly opinion, if they are ever allowed citizenship, I pray it is allowed with out slavery stipulations, such as the ones on this Bill. Paying a fine and having a notable impeccable life, may be an important part of the needed requirements, but not having to serve in the Arm Forces. Everyone that has served is honorable, and has not done this for self, instead for their beloved United States of America. So, although I want a Bill for these people someday. I‘m glad this one didn’t pass.

Posted on September 21, 2010 at 5:15pmDimmuBorgir:
This defense appropriations bill had 3 amendments to it that were added for political reasons:
1) The repeal of DADT. The Republicans are going to allow this to happen…they just want to wait until AFTER the Pentagon report they are conducting to see what effect this will have on the Military. The House already approved a repeal earlier this year.
2) The DREAM act was added. This allows illegal aliens who were brought here as kids to be allowed to be documented and earn a citizenship status. The bill allows for anyone age *35* and younger who was brought into the country before age 16, who has graduated High School and has no record, to get a green card and become a citizen with 2 years of college or enlistment in the military. Major problem is they wanted very little in the way of PROOF that they were in the country before age 16, etc, etc. It would be easy for anyone close to age 35 to opt into it and get it. Amnesty in other words.
3) Making all military medical facilities both in the U.S. and overseas to allow elective abortions. This means the U.S. government would be essentially funding abortions. Currently service members have to leave the base to get an abortion. If they are overseas they can hitch a ride back on a military transport to get to the U.S. for the abortion.
All 3 of those amendments deserve their own debate and tacking them on to the appropriations bill, while not against the rules, is terrible, IMO

However, the military should not be held resposnible for the morons who would redicule or harass a gay person serving openly. This type of stuff is only taking away from what we should really be talking about. I know a few gay people and most of them are very kind and seem to be good people….Its none of my business what they do in their bedroom….as long as that is where it takes place. Not in the barraks, not in public……hmmm I think those laws already exist for heterosexual people, so we are good. Listen up GOP……EQUAL RIGHTS means EQUAL RIGHTS. Now marriage is a different story. That, by definition, is between a man and a women. Civil unions should be sufficent. Equal rights, different name.
