Repubs Vow to Block All Legislation Until Budget, Tax Cuts Addressed

All 42 GOP Senators have signed a letter vowing to block all legislation until a budget is passed and the Bush-era tax cuts are addressed. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell announced the letter on the Senate floor this morning:

“We write to inform you that we will not agree to invoke cloture on the motion to proceed to any legislative item until the Senate has acted to fund the government and we have prevented the tax increase that is currently awaiting all American taxpayers,” the letter, which was delivered to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, says. “With little time left in this Congressional session, legislative scheduling should be focused on these critical priorities.”

“The true effect of this letter is to prevent the Senate from acting on many important issues that have bipartisan support,” Reid responded this morning on the Senate floor. According to National Journal, he said the letter codifies a GOP strategy of delaying action “on critical matters, then blaming the Democrats for not addressing the needs of the American people. Very cynical, but very obvious, very transparent.”

Democrats responded to the threat by setting a tax vote for Thursday. But not before considering pulling a procedural fast one on Republicans. According to Politico, Democrats may lump extending unemployment insurance into that vote.

“I believe that passing unemployment insurance is a moral imperative, not a political deal,” House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) told reporters in the Capitol. “We have millions of American families who are without the resources to have any confidence they can put food on the table the next day. That they can pay the rent, get gasoline in their car so they can go look for a job. I think that making a political deal on unemployment insurance is not what America ought to be about.”

Hoyer, however, told Politico that he is not necessarily in favor of wrapping the votes together, but that it is an option that’s been “on the table.”

“It is a shame that what we have agreement on is being held hostage by that on which we do not have agreement,” Hoyer said.

The only thing small in my GREAT STATE OF TEXAS is our government, from December 1999 through December 2009, Texas added 724,300 net private sector workers, a 9.30 percent total gain. For this same period, the nation experienced a 1.41 percent loss in the number of private sector jobs.
This is what happens when you say “NO” and limit your government to what they can do, so JUST SAY NO TO SOCIALISM AND JUST SAY NO TO DRUGS!!!

Once again Nancy Pelosi has me pulling my hair out. When President Bush passed the TAX CUTS it was a TAX CUT the first year, then it stayed in effect as a TAX RATE. There are no TAX CUTS only TAX RAISES. So today, Nancy says if the Right includes the CURRENT TAX RATE for the top 2% earners, it will ADD $700 billion to the deficit ! This woman is INSANE. What is reality is that if the current tax rate is NOT extended to the top 2% then the top 2% will have a TAX INCREASE. And out of that increase the Feds will TAKE $700 billion in taxes that they will SPEND. None of this has anything to do with the deficit. If the Feds increase taxes they will not use the increased revenue to pay down the deficit, they will GIVE it away. NANCY….there are NO TAX CUTS for anyone. Ten years ago we got a Tax cut. For the last 9 yrs we have stayed at that rate….ONLY ONE YR WAS A TAX CUT. Any change now …for any income level is a TAX INCREASE and has nothing to do with the deficit. No wonder we are so deep in debt . She is saying “If you don’t give us more of your money, you are adding to the deficit”. STOP SPENDING

I was with him until the word “until”.

Block all legislation for the next two years, unless that legislation repeals laws, or taxes, or reduces spending according to real world accounting practices. Also, if legislation includes riders on it, even if it’s good legislation, block that as well. They need to pound home the fact, the idea, the notion nay the very principle of resistance, and do so in no uncertain terms.

No bargaining. No compromise. Block all new, and repeal all existing that is bad.

Them’s the orders, GOP. That’s why we elected you. Fail and you’re gone next election.

One thing that can be agreed on is that folks making 250K per year should have their taxes remain at current levels. Why not just vote on that?

And don’t you think that not raising taxes on the rich will increase the debt? And please don’t give me any Laffer BS…that has been proven false many times over.

A law needs to be passed to say one vote for thing at a time, no more grouping crap together like tying the deadbeats on unemployment wanting their extensions to sit at home, and tying it to the tax hikes, two different items, should be two differnt votes.

Make congress and the senate accountable for all funding, did you know that stimulus money went in the form of a grant for $700,000 to a college for a study, the study was on COW FARTS of cows that ate organic foods. WHY? start cutting the budget and start there on stupid things like this.

There is no doubt in my mind that every unsavory and unwanted piece of legislation cooked up by these loons over the last few years will be passed through this lame duck session. All we the people, the taxpayers, the contributors, can hope for is that the massive infrastructure put into place and the senseless money and power grabbing legislation can be reversed or dismantled in the 112th. These hourly updates of how the 111th continues to press forward with their progressive agenda, regardless of what is in the best interest of the United States and its citizenship, is simply the confirmation I needed that term limits are a necessity and the remaining power players must go.

It is disgusting that the GOP insists that hedge fund managers, bankers, Wall Street traders and tort attorneys get tax breaks for their income above and beyond the first 250k we all get and will borrow the money from China to do it but chooses to bankrupt people like my cousin in the name of fiscal responsibility.
What is even more disgusting is the GOP blocking the attempts to end the tax break the company got when his job was moved to India. This issue isn’t about job creators. They could easily be exempted from all income taxes on money used to create jobs. It’s about taxing the greedy who will sell their country out so they can make more money than they could send on a hundred life times. There is no patriotism among those who put profit above the national good.
The GOP is not aligned with my view of how to make our nation strong again when they back policies that destroy the middle class, our industrial base and dig us into deeper debt defending a 2% tax increase for income over 250k and borrowing 700 billion dollars to do it.

“But they still allowed S510 to pass? ”
Lobbying by connected donors who contributed heavily to their campaigns and will hire them and their staffers for very high salaries when they retire. The GOP is no better than the Democrats. They just play on the people emotions better. We need a THIRD PARTY!

Do you honestly think that raising taxes wil remotely help your cousin?? The reason jobs are outsourced is it is cheaper than keeping them here. Over the past 10 years I have watched an exidus from Michigan because it is cheaper to do business in other states or other countries. So if you think raising taxes will help, just look to Michigan where businesses have been taxed to the point of leaving.

GOOD!!! Even though they don’t have the majority, it makes a clear statement to the dems that the voters want to be recognized and listened to by Congress. REPEAL THE HEALTH CARE!!! 26 year old babies DO NOT need to be on their parent’s insurance. Insurance companies DO NOT need to be saddled with pre-conditions – figure something else out (I say this after being denied two issues by BC/BS). These two items left in the Rep. health care plan are not acceptable and should be reconsidered unless we are trying to bankrupt the insurance companies.

Is anyone else considering just electing Reps over 65(for both state and national offices). Ether way we are never going to solve our medicare/social-security(unless we raise the retirement age to 75) problem, but at least this way we know they aren’t going to make a long career out of milking the public.

How can the minority stall anything? Seems to me that Congress has some really stupid rules and naturally the poor are the ones who get dumped on! http//maboulette.wordpress.com

Sure wish the GOP thought of this on November 3, 2010. Slowly starting to get a little spine, however they blew it on S 510.

A Doctors Labor Is Not My Right – I don’t know who to respond to on this thread, but yours has to be the most ill informed and ridiculous. First of all, the Democrats favor keeping tax breaks for 98% of Americans. That’s you and me and, well, 98% of Americans. So difference is not maintaining Bush’s tax cuts – and let’s remember folks, those were designed to expire after 10 years because the obvious and devastating effect on the national debt. The difference is whether we keep tax cuts for the wealthiest 2% of the population.

The claim is that by keeping those tax breaks for the millionaires, and adding a trillion dollars of debt over the next 10 years, we’ll HELP the economy. The Republican line is that adding to the debt will reduce the debt. Good luck with that idea.

But wait a second, Bush‘s tax cuts didn’t add jobs. The record of job growth under Bush was abysmal and the economy ultimately tanked. Those tax cuts didn’t increase jobs (2% over his tenure as I recall, one of the worst in the last 50 years or so), phenomenally increased the national debt, and whether cause and effect or not, preceded the worst economic situation since the Great Depression. Why is it that people think that’s so great? (And BTW, taxes on the rich were much higher under Reagan).

Here’s my conspiracy theory: rich people, the one’s who benefit from the tax breaks, support Republicans. The richest aren’t partisan, they’re just in the business of making money. They‘ll invest money in a candidate if they’ll get a return. It’s just business.

But back to you Doctor. You use the word Marxist, but can you define the term? Sounds to me if you support tax breaks for 98% of Americans, but think the millionaires are probably doing okay (corporate profits were just had the best quarter ever in the last 50 years) then you’re a Marxist. I think you need to work on your vocabulary.

The rich aren’t suffering my ill informed friend, the poor and the unemployed are suffering. Companies aren’t hiring because demand for their product are low (because – duh – everybody is broke), not because they‘re don’t have enough money to hire people.

Doctor I recall an intelligent post you made a week or two ago. I’d love to hear another one.

Exactly right. take out the clubs and bats, and beat the dems senseless until they get the message. 600+ seats lost on november 2nd apparently has not registered.. so let the beatings begin. We are the people. We are in charge. We said cut taxes for everyone, cut spending, dump the insane Democrat agenda, repeal Obamakare, and do it NOW. or face the consequences. We re not kidding.

      @JZS

Tax cuts don’t do “amazing damage to the debt”. The money is not the government’s first, there is no first claim on my labor by the government. Ergo, a tax cut cannot hurt the debt, only spending can cause the debt to grow.

      @jzs

These “millionaires” of which you speak are business and farm owners. They hire people.

You think taking more of their income is going to be an incentive to hire? Hiring involves risk. If you tax their income, they’re not going to use that income to hire, they’ll just buy property or yachts or spend in on vacations – why make investments in people when the results of those investments will be confiscated if you can instead spend it on yourself and your family?

If you’re so intent on confiscating from the wealthy, then maybe you should start taxing assets instead of income. Except those who have assets – the real wealthy – are the ones who vote DEMOCRAT. So much for your theory.

As for the awful economy of the Bush years, I’d go back in a hearbeat to the first six years of the Bush administration – before the rats took Congress. Despite the constant whining back then about the economy being the “worst since the great depression”, compared to now, after four years of Democrat controlled Congress and two years of Democrat controlled presidency, the Bush years were a freaking boom time.
