‘Repulsive’: Jewish Leaders Angry After Church Wraps Pastor in ‘Torah’ & Exalts Him as ‘King’

ATLANTA (The Blaze/AP) — Jewish leaders are criticizing a ceremony that involved a controversial megachurch leader being wrapped in a religious scroll and exalted as a “king” to the applause of his parishioners.

The video from a service last Sunday at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church shows Rabbi Ralph Messer, a Messianic preacher, instructing two men to slowly wrap Bishop Eddie Long in a large scroll that’s purported to be the Torah.

“It doesn’t matter where you go, how you try to attack him. He’s sealed,” Messer proclaims, before the scroll is opened to reveal a teary-eyed Long. Moments later, Long was seated in a plush chair, covered in a prayer shawl while holding the sacred scroll and lifted by four men.

“He now is raised up from a commoner to a kingship,” Messer proclaims, as the men walk Long’s seat around an adoring crowd.

Messianic Jews believe that Jesus Christ, or Yeshua, is the Messiah, putting them at odds with traditional Jewish theology. Most Jews consider the faith to be a form of evangelical Christianity.

Rabbi David Shiff of Congregation Beth Hallel, a Messianic Jewish synagogue in Roswell, condemned the actions in the video.

“Ralph Messer in no way represents Messianic Judaism,” Shiff said. “He is not affiliated with any legitimate branch of Messianic Judaism. His actions in no way reflect the position of Messianic Judaism. I found the presentation to be repulsive and inappropriate.”

The Torah is one of Judaism’s most sacred objects and Jewish groups said the notion that it was used in a ceremony at the church was offensive.

“The notion that he wraps Bishop Long in a Torah is horrifying simply because it’s completely inappropriate. It’s an awful way to use the Torah,” said Bill Nigut of the Anti-Defamation League. “And it doesn’t in any way approximate any Jewish ritual.”

Long was accused of sexual misconduct in September 2010 by four male former church members who accused him of abusing his spiritual authority. He settled out of court in May for an undisclosed amount.

He took a leave of absence last year to deal with his divorce and other personal issues, but returned to the pulpit in January.

The video, which was recorded Sunday, shows Long sitting on a chair under a spotlight as Messer repeatedly chants, “It’s a new birth.” The camera pans to congregation members, who cheer.

Long’s church, which is in Lithonia east of Atlanta, issued a statement from Messer saying that the ceremony was based on a passage from the Old Testament on restoring the Kingdom of David.

“My message was about restoring a man and to encourage his walk in the Lord,” Messer said in the statement. “The presentation of the Scroll of Torah was simply a way of bringing honor to a man who had given his life to the Lord and had given so much to his church, the Atlanta metro area and throughout the world.

“It was not to make Bishop Eddie L. Long a king.”

    What is he a bishop of? I’d like to know where he went to seminary or if he has a degree in theology. A lot of these black “ministers” give themselves titles having no affiliation with a real church or have no real training. They just proclaim themselves whatever title they think sounds important.

      @ Amos This guy has a Bentley, a helicopter, a huge home, etc. These material possessions are not what Jesus had in mind for preachers. His “church” takes the ten percent right out of a parishioners pay check. He is involved in so much corruption in our area with politics and the way things are run in our county and school system. He is not a good man and does not show Christian values the way that I learned them. Those that follow this man, are no better.

He takes his parishoners money and gets EXTREMELY RICH off the backs of his congregation. I have seen this man before and the ego on him is unbelievable. The SELF proclaimed bishop gave himself this title. Eddie Long made the “Top 10 preachers who are absolutely loaded article”. This is NOT the message of the TRUE Christian faith. These “megachurch” pastors who live in palaces while their congregants for the most part live in poverty. This is NOT what the tithe is suppossed to be for!!! They have become the modern day Ciaphas getting MEGA RICH off God while preaching but NOT walking what they preach. But hey you know once saved always saved!!!     If this Torah Scroll they used is in fact a kosher scroll (meaning it was created and cared for according to Rabbinc Law), then I am wholly disgusted and offended.

    To us Jews, a Torah Scroll is the physical word of G-d. As its words are perfect, so must be the scroll. True scrolls are handmade by master scribes according to strict rules. The parchment and ink must be authentic and unblemished. The calligraphy cannot embellished nor imperfect.

    Scrolls must be handled in a way that doesn’t destroy this perfection: The parchment is not to be touched by hands as bodily oils and perspiration could stain the parchment or cause the ink to run. Care must be taken not to tear parchment. Any rips or tears render the scroll unusable until it can properly be mended.

    We regard these scrolls as living entities. When a scroll is damaged beyond repair and usability, it is given funeral rites and mourned.

    Doing what they did in the video could damage the scroll. I doubt a scribe would sell a scroll he took years to complete to a “messianic” who likely isn’t really Jewish and who would likely not properly care for it. It is very likely that this “messianic” obtained an untrue scroll that he uses for his “ceremonies.” If that is the case, and no Torah Scrolls were harmed in the making of this video, I‘m offended but grateful a kosher scroll wasn’t put at risk. This is neither Christian nor Jewish, nor is this Messianic! There is nothing in the Torah, the prophets, the songs or the New Testament that allows for this. This is beyond the pale!

    He does not represent true Christians who truly honor, love and respect the jewish scriptures and people.
    The priests who wrote the torah had to follow utmost “cleansing” rituals and had to stop writing each time Gods name is mentioned and “cleanse” because they treat it This Holy.

    I don’t know about all this, but we do need to seriously define what “Religion” is and what qualifies as “religion” and religious protection in this Country! Somehow we have allowed “Destruction and death of all other religions (infidels)“ come under ”religious protection” around here! Just because you get a mail order i.d. card calling yourself a minister, you do not automatically become a Bishop! Just because you are fervent about your culture, kill for it, does not entitle you to “religious” status!

      I don‘t agree with that this church is doing with this disgraced preacher and I’ve been in churches that have fallen due to the head of the body falling. It harms everyone who were based their faith in their their spiritual leader rather than in God.

      But they have the right to be a flaky church under our constitution.I don‘t want our gov’t to decide what religion is valid and what is not.

    This is NOT a Christian Church, this is a LIBERATION THEOLOGY church….BIG DIFFERENCE!
    Liberation theology teaches that “Black theology refuses to accept a God who is not identified totally with the goals of the Black community. If God is not for us and against White people, then he is a murderer, and we had better kill him. The task of Black theology is to kill Gods who do not belong to the Black community”.

      Enrico – I’ve seen this man on TV. I never heard black liberation theology being taught so this poster doesn‘t know what he’s talking about.

      I stopped watching bishop Long because there was something I didn’t like about him. Something felt wrong, and my son and I agreed. When I found out about the people accusing him of sodomy, I thought maybe that was it. It’s difficult to know if he really did it. If he did not, you’d think he would have fought it out in court. But he ended up divorced anyway so his life was not where it ought to be to pastor, and he really ought to have stepped down as pastor but still stayed in their church for a time of repentence and learning how to be a real Christian.

      Their church isn’t a Black Liberation Theology Church. They do preach the word/gospel at their church, I’ve been their. But I would question Eddie Long and the whole church after he settled the charges of molesting four men out of court and right after divorcing his wife. And then he still decide to stay as the leader of the church.

      That man just need to step down as the lead pastor. That’s if they are still teaching the word as written.

      I vistited thiers years ago and I didn’t hear any type of black liberation theology talk. They tout the gospel when went there.

      I wouldn’t know what they have been now days though.

      Looks like Black Liberation theology to me…

      C’mon really! “Long was seated in a plush chair, covered in a prayer shawl while holding the sacred scroll and lifted by four men.” And proclaims himself King! Yea, you know I see this in white and mix race churches all the time… NOT!!!

      I’m not defending Long or what ever is going on there. I was just saying that the church wasn’t a black liberationists church.

      It was years ago when I visited. I wasn’t only black (like it is now) and he was preaching the gospel as it was written. Me and my family felt welcomed.

      I don’t trust anything that is going down in that church. I don‘t like or truth these mega Church’s and I don’t care the black culture style of preaching personally. I was just commenting on the theology
