Research: Bible May Have Been Right About Red Sea Miracle

The parting of the Red Sea, as portrayed in the movie "The Prince of Egypt."

It’s one of the more famous Bible stories. While fleeing from their Egyptian masters, the Israelites reach a dead end at the Red Sea and are almost assured death or a return to slavery. But, the story in Exodus goes, God parted the waters allowing the Israelites to cross, and collapsed the waters on the Egyptians when they tried to use the same passage.

Now, according to new computer analysis from the National Center for Atmospheric Research, the miracle may not be as impossible as some detractors think. The study, published today in the online journal PLoS ONE, finds that strong, persistent winds could offer a physical explanation for the event.

“The simulations match fairly closely with the account in Exodus,” lead researcher Carl Drews told the London Telegraph.

Here’s how:

Analysis of archaeological records, satellite measurements and maps allowed the researchers to estimate the water flow and depth at the site 3,000 years ago.

An ocean computer model was then used to simulate the impact of a strong overnight wind on the six-foot-deep waters.

The scientists found that an east wind of 63 mph blowing for 12 hours would have driven the shallow waters back, both into the lake and the river channel.

For a period of four hours, this would have created a land bridge about two miles long and three miles wide.

The waters really would have been parted, with barriers of water raised on both sides of the newly exposed mud flats.

Ken Ham, president and CEO of the Creation Museum, in Petersburg, KY told USA Today that he needs no scientific explanation in order to believe that the event occurred: “The parting of the Red Sea was a miracle,” he wrote in an e-mail to the paper.

“It was an extraordinary act of God. Yet, God used a force of nature — wind — to bring about this miracle. But there is no need to come up with a naturalistic explanation of a supernatural event.”

What is it that you believe? You believe God parted the Red Sea because that is the named sea in the area of Egypt? Note that Exodus 14:9 says: Pharoah , and his horsemen, and his army, and overtook them encamping by the sea, beside Pihahiroth, and before Baalzephon.
Note that God told Moses to: lift up his rod. This is what happened: Moses lifted up his own spirit, and Moses divided Pihahiroth, and divided Baalzephon, and then God for Moses struck a portion of the Egyptians with the light, and Egyptians took the wheels off the chariots, and Israel moved through the divided Sea of people of Pihahiroth and Baalzephon. Then Moses turned around and raised his spirit again and caused the sea of Pihahiroth and Baalzephon to fall upon the Egyptians.

Robert Ballard, the same man who found the Titanic, has alraedy found and filmed the Egyptian chariots on the bottom of the Red Sea. I saw some of the videos, there where chariots that had the wheels still intact and there were some chariots that obviously were smashed. Some of the chariots had gold gilded wheels. Amazing how God has preservd the remains to this day when they can be found, filmed, and recovered, Just more proof is being found everyday that proves the Bible is the infallable Word of God.

Red Neckerson, I don’t mean to burst your uncircumcised hearts bubble, but if they had been on the bottom of the red sea for over three thousand years, they would never have found them as they would have been covered by dozens of feet of silt and sand. They were placed there after the fact. I would think people are slightly smarter than science, as even science lies today directly to your face.

      See Neckerson,
The way history is, is first the world had hellinistic gods and an earthly god; then incarnated gods using science as sorcery to keep and hold power(pharoahs); Then the real God came and undid all those past religions with a real spiritual presence; and now science is trying to take back over by making things the way people’s hearts hear and understand the Bible, imitating God’s actions. So basically, science needs there to be chariots at the bottom of the Red Sea.

Eliasim, God created Science. There are two kinds of Science. The one that observes and tests the world around us and the one that makes up things. There are Christian Scientists. There are no “gods” The is One God, then there are the forces of evil. Now either you are being a dork and making up things, or you are Intellectually Bankrupt and believe it. Either way is not too good for you.

About the Chariots, they were covered by coral and no silt might not have covered them.

You really need to brush up on your Biblical history.

      Breakingthepresidium,
It’s alright, I understand, you externalize your belief in God like Muslims do. I’m sure it makes you feel better and takes less guts. God does work miracles, wiping out firstborns, plagues and such. But God didn’t part the Red Sea, Moses parted a sea of people. Explain why God would slowly work the Pharoah by God doing small things to Pharoah, and then do a giant thing by wiping Pharoah and all his army away with the Red Sea, when God could have just as easy just struck them dead? Striking them dead would be a big miracle.

Let’s do the math. Three miles long, two miles wide, six feet deep.

      ((3 * 5280) * (2 * 5280) * 6) = cubic feet of water. A cubic foot of water weighs 62.4 pounds.

      1,003,622,400 cubic feet * 62.4 pounds…….

My guess is getting nailed with a speeding wall of water of that mass would be somewhat harmful.

Right, God parted the Red Sea through Moses. He could have used a natural method but I believe it was through His divine power. But still, it is nice when scientists can prove what the Bible says to be correct. It shows the fact that God and science can and do coexist. The Bible is not full of fairy tales and outdated science.

“as about as likely as your winning a state lottery”. Actually a lot less likely, but, state lotteries are won all the time. this is only recorded as actually happening once. Not to be disrespectful but this makes a lot more sense to me than a “Ghost Dance”. This story and many others were recorded in writing from the times they happened by period contemporaries, and not just handed down by word of mouth where the story teller adjusts the “facts” to convey the slant he wants to put on it.

      OKPULOT TAHA,

I will cite a couple of modern miracles:

The foundation of America was a miracle, really the first time in history that people kept their freedoms that god gave them and had proper protection to pursue happiness. Our founders created our country in faith of “divine providence.” America‘s constitution has outlasted any other country’s governing document.

A more recent, less purpose more symbolic miracle is that of the geese flyover of 8.28, after trying to organize a flyover, Mr. Beck failed. Amazingly, A flock of geese in perfect formation flew over the crowd almost at the perfect time, nearly right at the beginning of the event.
      Youtube video link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GyK9QRr4ebQ

Answering your pondering over why I pray for you is because I care for you. Once you fully understand the power of god, you will become a much more enlightened individual.

Please respond with something that disproves miracles. I pray that you will see god.

Once there was a man who said, “Come, walk to me upon the water.”

Those in the boat were afraid (of him or his own particular brand of madness?), except for one.

The one climbed out of the boat and crossed the water without sinking…until he doubted himself and lost faith.

      Then he sank.

      Allegory, parable or truth?

Who among you has never lost faith or sunk to the depths of despair?

Yet, there are enough of you here with the combined faith to both find and upraise the Titanic, albeit, for decidedly different reasons.

      Instead, you bicker over miracles.

Everyone travels The Trail of Tears at some point in their lives, thus legends, tales and stories enable them to connect with those who went before.

The story of Chahta and Chickasha, speak to the beautiful strength and tradition of the Choctaw People, one story among so many Native American spiritual words.

Various peoples of color, race and creed!

You do not view a different sky, nor walk a different Earth.

Although you may take very separate and distinct paths toward your goals,
every single road converges to one end.

If you do not come together in life, how will you ever overcome yourselves in death?

      Exactly.
If God did create the universe (which I believe He did) then everything else small potatoes.
Miracles to people are nothing to God. He’s capable of anything so to part a small body of water–that He created, is kinda of silly to think He couldn’t. He created gravity, so for Jesus to walk on water is for Him to only suspend His own creation. But these miracles are for our benefit for our finite minds to get a glimpse of God’s power.

Exactly! “Perfect Laws in Nature.” I don’t buy the theory of the big bang causing life as we know it. Explosions cause chaos not perfect order. If anyone ever doubts that, just blow something up and try to find any semblance of order and perfection anywhere near the blast radius.

Some of us believers won’t call it “blaspheme.” We might just point out that when Moses did take personal credit for one of the miracles that he was rebuked by God over the matter. And according to the Bible that did happen when Moses struck a rock and water came forth for the Isrealites. Moses took credit–and well, I think I already mentioned that Moses didn’t get the good end of that deal.

What I find interesting is that they say, “Yes, it could have been caused by a wind.” Well, while I believe in the crossing by the Isrealites, I have a few questions still with this explanation.

For example, okay a 63 mph wind can drive back 6 feet of water and you would have walls. I can accept that. But what goes through my mind are a few of the following questions: Would that wind be traveling across, with, or against the people crossing the inland sea? Have you ever tried walking in high winds? And they weren‘t just traveling alone weren’t they? Maybe they were traveling without any food, water, clothing, sheep, cattle, or any other provisions that might have made travel in that wind any interesting challenge. I cannot say for sure.

It could have been wind and the real miracle is both the timing (the wind blowing when they needed it) and the fact that they made the crossing in such wind. Or perhaps it was something else. Did you know that there was already another explanation for how this miracle might have happened? A second proposal that actually was linked to a possible explanation for the plagues? Someone theorized that it could have been earthquakes and volcanic activity. That was interesting to learn about. Doesn’t mean that is the way it was done. Because even that brings into the question of how would Moses have been able to know when and if all these things would have happened. Because, although they were able to attribute examples of all the plagues connected with volcanic activity, I do not recall them placing all of them with an all encompassing example of volcanic activity. They just used a few repeated for connected effects. Water to blood (not literally in their analogy but would have seemed so) was also connected to the plague that killed all the eldest (hint: they claimed that the eldest boys/men were given the best beds in the ancient Egyptian homes–which were beds down low while the family typically slept on the roof–so a low laying gas would have killed them while their family up above would have been spared as well as the Jews who were not laying down–seem to recall they were feasting and most of us eat upright). I mean, without God, how would Moses have known to time the feast, the river to blood miracle, the locusts, and everything else. And by the way, they attributed the Red Sea crossing to a mistranslation of ancient texts. Apparently there used to exist another inland “sea” back then known as the Reed Sea. It no longer exists as an inland sea…. But they claimed that an earthquake would have created the rushing of water overnight followed by the water rushing back in like a wall a bit later…. So, perhaps the options available to God were wide and far more varied than one possibility. Wind, water, and earth. I hear that God created them all.

If you have your Bible, please turn to the 24th Chapter of Joshua, in this chapter you will find the answer to the origin of miracles. The light bulb is to Moses what the Power Plant is to God. The light bulb and Moses demonstrate power, but the true source of power is no mystery.

I really didn’t intend to start a Biblical debate here. I know that God made the Sea part but Moses was the man who raised his staff and thus it happened. I was referring to what is commonly known to most people. Moses gets the credit for parting the seas in every story I have read. But yes, it could not happen without God making it happen. Thank you!

Miracles only wane when people stop believing. I love the scientific study of miracles, it gives me a small glimpse into the mind of God. No, I don’t need to see them to believe, but it adds to my faith rather than diminish it. If someone has a problem with something like this then they need to do more meditation on their own spirituality and open their minds a bit.

If God didn‘t want us to know how he works with nature then we wouldn’t have the ability to explore science. Those who have ears let them hear…Those who have eyes let them see.

For those who are wondering how the Egyptians could drown in 6 ft of water, when the winds stopped, the water came rushing back creating rip currents and such. You could drown in 2 ft of water if it was moving fast enough. And really it doesn’t have to move that fast.

Actually, knowing how it is done should help people understand the greater miracle that it was. If you seek mysticism then you need to re-look at your own beliefs. (no insult intended) Knowing that the very winds obey and how they did obey does not change that the feat was still a miracle. Even if we could understand how the elements can follow the will of God, will not detract from the fact that the element DO follow the will of God. Do they follow your will? Do they follow the will of the scientists? Not without manipulation. God has always followed the laws of nature, do you think that makes Him weak or less powerful?

IndependentTess, good point! Praise God… even for nay sayers who will argue that “there is a scientific explanation and its not a miracle” still doesn’t account for it happening right at that moment!! What would the chances be that this “just happened”?

I believe it takes more faith to believe that God doesn’t exist and all these things “just happen” then it does to believe there is a God and He is in control.

To believe the “big bang” theory is like believing you could put all the pieces of a clock into a box, shake it up for a million years, then open it up and expect to find a perfectly put together clock. It just doesn’t work.

Okay, so this is a naturally occurring phenomenon with large expanses of shallow water and areas that experience long durations of high steady wind. It is still proof of the work of God either way you see it.
Either God sent the wind and parted the water, or He led His children to the exact place at the exact time, told them to trust Him at what must have been a terrifying prospect, and convinced them that the right action was to go out into and cross a mud flat that would have been next to impossible to move in. They would have felt even more trapped in the sucking mud! But God told them it was the right action.
Some would find it a stretch to believe that the Egyptians all died in 6 feet of water. Not if the winds only let up a bit and they were knee deep in mud and silt with 3 to 4 feet of water and strong currents pulling them down.
I know, please don’t jump on me for demonstrating a possible situation that could be simply explained by science and presuming a possibility that is not exactly how it was stated in the Bible. Even if what I presume did happen, it still would have been written the same way by those that experienced it, so I can’t be completely discounted. What I am saying is that this is a real phenomenon, but it is an extremely rare one. The odds of Gods children being there at just the right time and place and the waters coming back just in time are just way to much to be a coincidence. I am not claiming any truth to this, but it would still be a miracle just the same. It is also much like the subtle, but very real miracles that we see happening to this day, which I see as proof that God is still with us.

It is impossible for all of what we see around us to just happen. the human body is designed to perfect. any defects after man was created is man’s doing. God does not make planes fall from the sky, man builds planes, defects of birth are from man fooling with chemicals and Gods creation. free will is dangerous, but needed to find the path to truth. God reveals himself to us in many ways, we are just to busy, selfish and self centered see it. instead we as man choose to let the boogie man chase us from the truth.

Think about it, we as humans build things and try to perfect it. we keep working hard at making everything better, planes, cars, phones, robots, computers, etc. we are Gods creation, he is seeking perfection in his creation as well. he is watching how his creation is evolving.

Like us, God can scrap his project at anytime. Don.t try to confuse it or spin any of this, we are not in charge. a conscience doesn’t just happen. love is real, God is love,God is good, all the time.
