Restaurant Owner Claims His Business Has Tripled Since Posting ‘English Only’ Sign

Greg Simons, the owner of Reedy Creek Diner in North Carolina, became frustrated over his inability to communicate with non-English speaking customers. So, he took a controversial step: He posted an ‘English Only’ sign. Simons claims that the results have been unbelievable. He’s received support and acclaim from people across the nation. And, his business has been surging. Watch his explanation, below:

      Its not employment discrimination if your are denied a job based on the fact that you dont speak english. There are several professions in this country that require by law that you speak english (tho most dont enforce it). I dont bother even giving apps to someone who asks for it in spanish.

      wrong, i work for a global company and you must speak english as well as contractors. people got hurt and when they were going to get fired they would say “NO ENGLISHA i did not understands the wules”.

      people have tried to change it but the company has stood by it..

    Perhaps we can go back to ‘foreign’ languages as an elective in public schools.

    And while we’re at it:
    -Stop posting Spanish along side English; unless of course, ALL other foreign languages are posted as well.
    -Stop asking “for Spanish press #__”; unless of course, there’s an option for ALL other foreign languages.
    -Stop providing Spanish interpreters at govt facilities; unless of course, there are interpreters for ALL other foreign languages.

    It’s about time someone did this. We need to demolish the language barrier that is being built. I have no problems with any race, but I think it’s only common courtesy to learn the language of the land you live in. If I would move to mexico, I would learn spanish.

      plus… there is no such law that states one cannot discriminate based on language.. as well as there shouldn’t be.. seeing as some jobs, such as a diplomat, require a person to speak certain languages to perform said job.

      Really ??? ..this is old news … I am surprised that the Blaze would even put this up !!! I am Native American ..so please stop with this English only bs… tourists do come to this country you know … what ???? is it now required that they know and speak English before they visit the United States ??? For someone in the Restaurant business this guy seems clueless …and besides my 9 year old could have done a lot better with the grammar in English on that sign ..geez !!! There are far more pressing issues that are destroying this Republic than this Speak English Only bs …!!!!

      It is one of the numerous variants of the English language, reflecting local cultures, tradition, and usage. Others are “British English,“ ”Australian (or New Zealand) English”, “Canadian English,“ and ”pidgin English” a very irregular creole of English and one of several Oriental languages.

      I come from that John Wayne school of thought…..Why in the h3ll do I need to press anything to speak to someone in English in the Untited States?

      I have also learned that by telling companies that use the press one and so on BS that I will not do business with them has started to change they’re tune. If more people did it I think we would see a change in that way of thinking.

      oh yes, that would be awesome. I grew up in El Paso and was informed I needed to speak Spanish to get a decent job. I refused to learn Spanish. My kids are having to take two years of Spanish. No other language is offered. Do I care if they pass the class, yes. Do I care if they ever use it, NO! English only is the way this country should be. That is the American language. Learn it or get out.

      The last time I was in Paris, it was almost impossible to find a non-chain restaurant that didn’t speak French ONLY, and they expected the clientelle to also speak French…China was even more uni-lingual at local eateries.
      I guess it‘s only in America we’re not free to speak any language we want in our own place of business?

      Excellent demonstration Axel. I was going to bring up France myself, since when I go there I make it a point to speak French. It’s just good courtesy, one should not expect a foreign nation to cater to your linguistic needs. Not in France, and not here.

      Design, Mexicans were in Texas, for example, before the white folks came. Texas is close to 40% hispanic. Since the Mexicans where in Texas first, maybe Texans should adopt the Mexican culture. Or the American Indian culture. As the melting pot of the world, the US is a blend of many cultures, some although some areas have retained much of the culture, such as the Mexican or German culture.

      The workers in a Wal Mart in New Jersey only speak Spanish. All of the announcements over the public address system are in Spanish. I wish Wal Mart would fly the flag of Mexico over these new stores catering only to illegal aliens. I did write a nasty letter to the CEO in AR but I never received a reply.

      So you are against a owner setting rules on his establishment? Same thing happened a few years ago in Philly, the owner was actually an immigrant and was sick of people slowing his line up by not being able to speak english. He had a very busy sandwich shop and just simply posted a sign, order in english only. The only ones upset were the ACLU and Libs. This guy will do just fine, cause there are a lot of us “Rednecks” that will give him business.

      Long long time ago once upon a time when I used to work as a GM of a huge hotel , there were a bunch of housekeepers who worked there but never spoke a word of English. They never took any instructions from their supervisor if they were in English and demanded translators everytime.
      I had given up on them when one fine day one of them needed to go home early and she came directly to my office and in perfect English asked me to let her punch out early .
      I asked her why she was speaking English now and she said

      Today a postal truck driven by a man who was Chinese pulled up in my driveway to deliver a package. He did not speak English but pointed to the address on the package and grunting Chinese. When can we expect a new flag flying at the local post office.

      No smoking for buildings you have no choice but to be in. (Federal, State, and Local governmental buildings, police stations, fire stations and hospitals).

      He said one of the smartest things possible and as one of my Tactics is titled Changed the Narrative. He made this not a racial situation but a communication problem!!

      Thats the angle ALL American businesses need to follow. Stop hiring bilingual employees as that does nothing but enable the communication problem! I find it quite insulting that a certain population comes to the US… oh heck Im going to say it spanish decent is in the US who REFUSES to speak and learn english. Stop enabling them corporate America they have NO RESPECT for you or this country.

      Before anyone attempts to attack me I take exception to this being the son of an immigrant(my father) from Italy who went the proper channels to gain citizenship. Who had to go to school here and learn to read and write in english, and learn this nations history to gain citizenship. On my mothers side they too were from Italy at the turn of the century and the policy in the households was to ASSIMILATE into American culture. I am sick of hearing press #1 for english or signs in english and spanish. Enough already and I hope this guys business quadruples over one of his competitors who gives in to those REFUSING to learn our language!!

      We need more like him, Joseph Vento (of Genos Steaks in Philly) etc etc to stand up in America against political correctness!!

      I think its more a matter of “ latino pride” than anything else with such people. They are told its beneath them to speak the language of the country and people they are supposed to exploit .

      Clearly, no one posting here has ever visited a foreign country. Outside of Europe – where a large majority of people are at least bilingual unlike the US ( tell me that is evil) – the people in that country do not, you know, speak English as a rule. Do they still manage to sell food to you in a restaurant? Well yeah! I’ve only been to China and Japan but for one, they have displays of the foods they offer, and if not that, they have a menu with pictures and prices. You point, they nod, they smile, you pay and you get what you ordered.

      I won‘t get into speculation about this guy’s nice, tidy description of what set him off. Because I don’t know.

      But I will comment on his statement that his business “tripled” (although he said it only tripled in March). Was that because he could take more orders because their was no language barrier that slowed taking of orders? No, that’s not possible. If his business increased it was because he refused have non-English speaking customers (which no businessman trying to maximize profits would do), it was because he was he declared that his restaurant was “whites only” just like the good old days.

      Maybe you think that’s great, but it is, if anything, bad business.

      @JZS – I have traveled all over the world and spoken either English or Spanish only. The only times that I spoke Spanish are the times in which it suited me better. People in Italy, France, Germany, and even Japan have all shown an extraordinary ability to speak English when my money was at stake. English IS the language of multinational business.

      I speak Spanish when I am working with Central/South American street vendors (in rural situations only) or farmers in the same region. I expect everyone else to know English and speak it when they want my money. It’s not racist, just honest business. Get over yourself.

      I would think that someone as well-traveled as you presume to be would be used to speaking English in France and demanding prompt and courteous service accordingly. That has always been my expectation and will continue to be so. When I hand a Chinese businessman my card, it will have one side printed in English and one in Chinese (Same is true in almost all Asian cultures). But when he hands me his, one side is also printed in English as well. All of our meetings are conducted in English. Even the Communists in China realize that English is the language of business…why can’t you?

      I admire the work of your secretary in having business card printed in two languages. Good for her or him. But you’ve shown your true colors as a “Yankee” and “ugly American” with at least two statements:

      Long long time ago once upon a time when I used to work as a GM of a huge hotel , there were a bunch of housekeepers who worked there but never spoke a word of English. They never took any instructions from their supervisor if they were in English and demanded translators everytime.

      My grandparents came from Italy, and they wouldn’t even speak Italian in their home because they were so determined to learn English. They did learn it and spoke it, and were so proud that they did. They were proud to be Americans, God Bless Them! What happened to that mindset? Oh yes, liberals yet again ruining this country.

      This guy‘s lucky Clinton isn’t in office. He‘d turn ol’ club foot Reno loose on him and he‘d end up like Randy Weaver’s son and wife, or the Branch Davidians. ‘Course, if BO wins a second term, there’s no telling what the fool might do along those lines. Whatever…it’s his business and he can by God run it how he sees fit…as long as his employees aren’t unionized, otherwise the NLRB will stick their shi**y noses in it like they’re doing with Boeing.

      “Love thy neighbor” is Messiah QUOTING Torah(The Law) and your neighbor was in the context of a Torah community/theocracy. When God/Messiah(“I and The Father are One”) ordered the Israelites to take the land from the Caananites was that loving thy neighbor? When David, a man after God’s heart took 200 Philistine foreskins when only requested 100, was that loving thy neighbor? How was Saul rewarded when he DID NOT kill(loving thy neighbor) all the Amalekites?

      Taking single QUOTES and turning them into hippie “jesus”-speak is insulting, inaccurate and offensive. I would advise you to get your head out of “church” anachronisms and read in context. A Jewish context.
