BOSTON (AP) — Researchers who secretly spy on people using public restrooms say that Americans seem to be washing their hands more often.
Checks during August in Chicago, Atlanta, New York and San Francisco found 85 percent of people washed their hands, up from only 77 percent in 2007.
It’s the best rate since these periodic surveys began in 1996.
One thing hasn’t changed: Men are still dirtier. About 23 percent of men failed to wash up compared to only 7 percent of women.
The results were reported Monday at an infectious diseases conference in Boston.

Posted on September 13, 2010 at 8:27pmWell the reason for more hand washing is due to a cultural habit, wiping your butt with your hand and smearing it on the walls. When you don’t belive in toilet paper, what do you exspect. But we are not allow to talk about trhis since there is too much Islamaphobia happening now…Scott Baker,..You should be ashamed of yourself for exposing this issue…Naughty,Naughty..Wink wink…

Posted on September 13, 2010 at 7:01pmReminds me of the old joke about the kid trying to get through his first day at boot camp. He got yelled at for taking too long of a latrine break. He said “Sergeant, I had to wash my hands” to which the Sergeant replied, “In school you got taught to wash your hands after you pee, but in the Army we expect you to avoid peeing on your hands.”

Posted on September 13, 2010 at 3:22pmMy question is, why do most public restroom doors open in, forcing you to grab the handle even after washing up? Things that make you go hmmmm…..

Posted on September 13, 2010 at 3:57pmGreat question! I use a paper towel to open the door, and I have seen more trash cans by the door since others are doing the same. I cannot imagine not washing my hands.

Posted on September 13, 2010 at 3:04pmanother fine example of our tax dollars at work. this is completely worthless information just as the mating habits of whatever species of animal they decided to investigate. I am so sick of people “spying” on me just to make a point. truth is, I think they make most of this stuff up just to make their point and to get our money in the name of research.

Posted on September 13, 2010 at 2:58pmAmazing. Some people can’t read a little health update without using it to demonize the government. I don’t know how you get through the day with that much hate in your heart.

Posted on September 13, 2010 at 8:14pmWe’re demonizing BIG government… There’s a difference. Government has a proper function.
Report Post »Problem is… They take on more than they have the power or the right to,
neglecting their proper role ,which is spelled out in the constitution.

Posted on September 13, 2010 at 2:50pmThese studies come out every few years. Quite a few years ago a similar study was done. This one had a twist. If the researcher was present in the restroom the women washed their hands more than men. However, if there was no one in the restroom the women were less likely to wash their hands than men. They concluded that men were less concerned with peer pressure when it comes to hand washing.
What does this mean? I haven’t a clue. But it is one of those bits of trivia that somehow got filed away in the recesses of my mind.

Posted on September 13, 2010 at 3:01pmSpeaking as a woman it just illustrates that women are vain and do things out of propriety when others are looking. They wash their hands for show to the other ladies in the loo. We’re just as nasty as men- ask any restroom attendant or janitor.
