Reuters: Iran to Practice Closing Strait of Hormuz, Crippling Gulf Oil Exports

Iran Plans to Practice Shutting Strait of Hormuz

A member of Iran’s parliament made a shocking claim on Monday. According to him, Iran is set to practice shutting down the Strait of Hormuz, which would cut off oil transport in the Gulf region. But while the threat is disconcerting, there has been no confirmation that the strait is currently closed or that the statement is more than just an empty threat.

Reuters reports:

The legislator, Parviz Sarvari, told the student news agency ISNA: “Soon we will hold a military maneuver on how to close the Strait of Hormuz. If the world wants to make the region insecure, we will make the world insecure.”

Contacted by Reuters, a spokesman for the Iranian military declined to comment.

Iran’s energy minister told Al Jazeera television last month that Tehran could use oil as a political tool in the event of any future conflict over its nuclear program.

“If the world wants to make the region insecure, we will make the world insecure,” he reportedly said. The move would apparently be to scare detractors who oppose Iran’s nuclear program.

“About a third of all sea-borne shipped oil passed through the Strait in 2009, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA),” says Reuters, “and U.S. warships patrol the area to ensure safe passage.”

According to Bloomberg news, oil prices shot up as a result of the speculation:

Crude advanced as much as 3.6 percent after the state-run Fars news agency reported the military maneuvers will be “soon,” citing Parvis Sorouri, a member of the parliament’s national security and foreign policy committee. The Strait of Hormuz is a bottleneck for oil exports from the Persian Gulf. The Fed is scheduled to release a statement on monitory policy later today.

However, as Zero Hedge points out, the shipping channel is still open. For now.

China is moving part of their fleet to some islands disputed by them and the Philipines in the west Pacific; or at least the India Times mentioned yesterday. This could be just a single ship, yet the timing here is no coincidence either.

A few months back Iran moved the two or more warships to Syria; one being a support ship for the establishment of a naval installation. Along with a sub, though speculation is there are more than just one there.

Consider this — Iran “closes” the straight just as the last of our troops pull out. Suez canal is taken and shut down by the Brotherhood, our fleet base at Bahrain is struck along with Saudi Arabia by an terror attack offensive; sunder the main trade lines of the sea, and then a quick land offensive into Iraq…one step closer to the Caliphate and the end of Israel.

Think about it from THEIR point of view before anyone criticizes me on the ‘impossiblilty of this happening.”

When iran tried this in the 80s, by laying mines in the straight, Ronald Reagan did something about it. If I remember correctly, he took out the mine layers and he took out a few oil platforms as well. These are fleas on the back sides of dogs. They are no match fo an unleashed US military, too far for Israel without help. Alongside the pissed off Brits, this countries (aryan/iran) ability to hold a slingshot fight could be decimated by air power alone. I sat we have some US Marines and a couple of Embassys we need payback for. Its time to go 1941 on thier donkey/camel asssesss. Who’s with me??? At nearly 47 I would almost rejoin the USMC if I was guaranteed a rifle in that fight…. Except for my boxer Sammy, my sweetheart.

No nuts nobama would let them go ahead and lay mines, shutting down the Straight, and veto the Canadian oil pipeline all in the same day.

@smackdown33… “Yes, we are the root of all evil. Sadly, and I mean that with all sincerity, we are becoming an axis of evil.

We’ve bombed Serbia, for what reason?”
The Serbs–whose strategic goal was to create a new Serbian State of Republika Srpska, encircled Sarajevo with a siege force of 18,000 stationed in the surrounding hills, from which they assaulted the city with weapons that included artillery, mortars, tanks, anti-aircraft guns, heavy machine-guns, multiple rocket launchers, rocket-launched aircraft bombs and sniper rifles. They were sniping everybody. They were monsters and decimating civilians. They were ethnic cleansing entire cities. We were there for humanitarian reasons, to end the slaughter of people.

We’ve involved ourselves in Kosovo, for what reason?
In the mid 90s ethnic Albanian Kosovars wished for independence from Yugoslavia. In response, Slobodan Milosevic’s Serbian security forces started a ruthless campaign against them. How about the WWII style war crimes, concentration camps, and killing every man, woman and child within a besieged city.

We’ve invaded Iraq, for what reason?
We were already actively bombing Iraqi anti radar sites daily. Iraq was building missles in violation of UN limitations. THEY DID HAVE WMDS, REMOVED BY RUSSIAN SPECIAL FORCES TO SYRIA, the MSM showed satellite photos on the news for a couple of hours before the entire story was removed and washed. If you pick a fight with Iran, it has become increasingly clear you will also be taking on Russia.

To the south of Iran is the Persian Gulf, to the north is the Caspian sea (a major waterway for Russia) to the West is Iraq, Turkey and Azerbaijan to the East, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan, to the west of those China.

Now you have a situation where China has told its troops to prepare for warfare (last week) and Russia has its own domestic problems which have traditionally led them into war (they also have become big players on the world oil markets, primarily selling to China and Europe which they use for leverage in the UN) Are you starting to see the set up? A lot harder…..

Crude oil prices aren’t determined on actual supply and demand alone……

In reality, crude oil prices (and gasoline for that matter) are determined mostly by anticipated levels of supply and demand at some point in the future (that‘s why they call them commodity ’futures’ contracts) as opposed to actual levels of supply and demand in the present moment.

In other words, there‘s a lot of folks making bets out there as to what the price of crude oil is gonna’ be at some point in the future and this influences the price of oil and gas moreso than the inventory that is presently on-hand.

In fact, I read last month where the U.S. was a net exporter of gasoline for the month of November…so that means that whatever gas that U.S. consumers didn’t buy was purchased and sent outside of the United States (’cause there’s always somebody out there somewhere else that needs some gas).

The main people that will be hurt by Iran shutting down the Gulf of Hormuz is Europe. It will affect us to some extent. Our energy use and acquisition is cut very close in relation to each other. The rest of the world should practice closing down the Iranian oil fields. Iran can practice exporting sand via animal pack trains to save their economy.

We should also tell the world, that if we have to spend treasure and blood to re-open the straits, they belong to us. Otherwise, take care of the matter without American help. Other than Finland, not one European nation ever attempted to repay their war debts after WWI or WWII. We need to tell the world that America has to be paid, if we’re to keep pulling them out of the troubles that they cause themselves.

We should be as helpful as possible to all of these countries that have never been able to help themselves out of trouble, but from now on, we need cash in advance.

I forgot one thing. At the end of any war – losers pay all costs, no matter how long it takes. Every American life lost to be billed at one hundred million dollars.

Zec 2:8 For thus saith the LORD of hosts; After the glory hath he sent me unto the nations which spoiled you: for he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye. (Zecharia is referring to the nation of Israel that was restored, after 2000 years, miraculously, in 1948 in ONE Day) Remember the story of David and Goliath? Goliath was a Philistine (Palastinian). That historical story is about to be play out again with the same amazing ending. God will again amaze the world with His sovereignty when it comes to Israel. The U.S. better NOT alienate Israel. how is this a “shocking claim”. these idiots have been asking for a war for quite some time. they are losing the support of their own people especially after the arab spring and need to flex some muscle to try and gain support again. not surprised, small country wants to cause big trouble

I wonder where our closest carrier group is now? For reasons I cannot understand Iran wants a war. I believe they are going to get what they want.

Our closest carrier group is already in the region, ready to make war on Iran when the Military Industrial Complex decides the incredible amount of money already given to them isn’t enough.

So nepthene its all just a vast conspiracy to make the rich get richer? Are the Bildeburgs or the Masons involved? How about the Illuminati? How does it all tie in with the fake moon landings? Did Oswald shoot Lincoln to?
i love conspiracy theories, so funny.

Not with the current admin it won’t. Heck, not even with any of the GOP candidates! Iran, et, al knows America has become a paper tiger and are pushing to destroy us. They’re being aided by the current admin. and a large majority of our congress. The only way to stop the decay of the U.S.A. is to stop this admin and stop the corrupt in our governments. How do we do this? How do you think?
