Reports: Obama Set to Take Action on Housing, Student Loans Without Congress

This summer, Obama mentioned twice that he would like to circumvent Congress when it comes to pushing his agenda. Now, according to Reuters and the Associated Press it seems he is doing it.

“President Barack Obama this week will announce a series of actions to help the economy that will not require congressional approval,” Reuters reports, “including an initiative to make it easier for homeowners to refinance their mortgages, according to a White House official.”

It should be noted that not everything the president does needs congressional approval. But the wire service explains just what it is Obama is working to do:

The Obama administration has been working with the Federal Housing Finance Agency, the regulator for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, to find ways to make it easier for borrowers to switch to cheaper loans even if they have little to no equity in their homes.

The FHFA intends to loosen the terms of the two-year-old Home Affordable Refinance Program (HARP), which helps borrowers who have been making mortgage payments on time but who have not been able to refinance as their home values have dropped.

They are also set to reduce loan fees that Fannie and Freddie charge and waive fees on borrowers that refinance into loans with shorter terms, the Journal said.

In Denver Wednesday, Obama will announce a student loan initiative.

The Associated Press adds that the moves will come with their own catchphrase:

Seeking to circumvent congressional opposition, President Barack Obama will announce a series of executive branch steps aimed at jumpstarting the economy this week, beginning with new rules to make it easier for homeowners to refinance their mortgages.

With the president’s jobs bill struggling in Congress, the White House is refocusing its efforts on steps Obama can take to address the nation‘s economic woes without getting lawmakers’ approval. During his three-day trip to the West Coast this week, Obama will use a new catchphrase to try to push Republicans into action: “We can’t wait.”

It’s his latest in a string of slogans aimed at placing blame on Republicans for lack of action on the economy.

“The president will continue to pressure Congressional Republicans to put country before party and pass the American Jobs Act, but he believes we cannot wait, so he will act where they won’t,” White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer recently told The New York Times.

In July, Obama told the Hispanic group La Raza that the idea of “doing things on my own is very tempting:”

Then in September, the president told the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute that “There are times where — until Nancy Pelosi is speaker again — I’d like to work my way around Congress.”

It should be noted that La Raza chanted “Yes you can!” after his first comments. And now, it seems, he is.

    2 failing programs, one of which for sure CAUSED 2008′s monetary collapse. Yeah, real good idea Barry. Oh, – and you can’t do this – the House starts all spending programs, and since this will undoubtedly be spending, the Constitution says hands off, executive branch. And, to use such things as yet another “chicken in every pot” get elected buy using taxpayer’s money, well, we are not dumb, Barry. We are indeed pissed, though……
    Impeach this evil fool now. We do not have 1 year left.

      Repeating the Rush lie that Fannie and Freddie caused the financial collapse is ignorance at its best. Wall St. created to vehicles, mortgage back securities and credit default swaps. The first was created to avoid the Banking regulations regarding mortgage qualification and underwriting regulations. The second was created to avoid insurance regulations relative to reserves. All you need to do is look at the portfolio of subprime loans to see who pushed them, who abused them and who used them. As far as him taking some action…it is about time. Congress is a joke. We have the best politicians money can buy on both sides of the isle.

      We are Bankrupt. Truth is, we have been since 1933. A “stimulus Package” or “Jobs Bill” is nothing more than a loan from the Federal Reserve to keep us in debt with them. The government struck a deal in 1933 to pledge it’s people as collateral to the federal reserve. We have been operating under Emergency Powers since then. These “Bailouts” are to purposely keep us indebted to the global elite.
      Someone owns you. They have a copy of your birth certificate, and trades you on their stock market just as if you were a livestock commodity.

      I’m going to stick my neck out here…I say..Let Obama do it!
      Now hear me out….Fannie has been begging for federal funds even after the democrats bailed it out. What led to the mortgage meltdown was mostly democrat lobbying for “affordable housing” which led to predatory lending, which led to the financials loading their books with bad paper after giving loans to people who really shouldn’t qualify for loans. And here’s Obama using executive order to do the exact same thing. I say…let him do it, pin it squarely in his emaciated chest and let him twist in the wind with it in 2012. Look….we‘re going to keep hurting as long as Obama’s in office, this is clear now….so let him continue the hurt until November 2012.

      Unfortunately, it sounds like he really isnt planning on spending any more money. They money was allocated by Congress in the Stimulus already.

      It seems he is simply allowing people who can pay their mortgage to refinance, where-as before, if you could already pay, you couldnt.

      Before it was aimed only at buying low-income votes. Now its expanding to try to buy votes from people would could already pay.

      Neither will fix the real problem of declining values, though. Just re-financing more underwater people into newer mortgages.

      He should have been impeached when Congress got the letter and I mean all congressmen House and Senate that he was ineligible to hold office but for some reason they ignored it the question is why? Someone mentioned all the presidential candidates and why they are not seeking out about the takeover the United States I do recall Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul taking issues with this. This should be front and center in these debates and not attacking one another in a public forum on their social stances. The only other one that has continuously spoken out was Sarah Palin but then again the media portrayed her as a far right winger,for me I believe she was right on the issues and still is but then again the feminist which is one movement for the Communist Party, for they fall into the trap that is best for their gender. The same goes for the gays and lesbians where now it is a hate crime for us to speak out, in fact they are more protected than a corrupt businessman. Changing the parties that represent us will not solve this problem unless they are true believers in the Constitution, that’s why you need to study the person running for local office, and state office and federal office know your candidate.

      1) The trial takes place in the Senate, which he still controls.

      @teamarcheson … didn’t see anything in the article about a Nov 9 date for his pronouncements, but that IS the date he (via his surrogates) will trip the Federal EAS system at 2pm, for a full 3.5 minutes.       Why not do what Florida is doing. The mortgage company‘s’ are going with 50 year mortgages. This way people continue to afford a mortgage payment. When the economy gets better they can
      re- mortgage their loans to a lesser term.

      This President should have been impeached. For him to continue to promote and spend beyond the means of our capacity. What he is doing is treason on the U.S. What the House needs to do is stop
      the funding on programs not yet executed to offset every dollar of spending he is proposing without going thru the House. His jobs program is not supported by enough democrats as well. Where is the ethics committee and Finance committee in the House. He must be halted going around Congress.
      He is treasonist for he knows this will collapse the system. Everything he is doing is wrong. Remove
      him in whatever way necessary. Look at removal that is not normal protocol also. Doesn’t the House

      President Bush appointed her to The HELP Commission whose goal is to “improve the effectiveness of US financial flows to other nations”… in other words, to improve the redistribution of wealth to foreign nations through mortgage-backed securities FRAUD!

      They bundled these deliberately bad morts together and sold the debt to foreigners! They got their money up front, allowed the market to collapse, and now FOREIGNERS are set to acquire the defaulted properties! Banks only SERVICE most of these loans! So they just collect money for the foreigners…from the taxpayer FHA-backed loans!

    I dont get it????? A student loan initiative? I can agree that college is rediculous and to pay 50k per year to go to college is a tough pill to swollow. I better not be on the hook for these people who chose to go to these colleges. I chose to go into the military to assist myself in paying my way. I have no debt because of the choices i made.

    What about the colleges themselves? How do they justify the price? I dont like this.

      My question is this.Why doesn’t every student question the pricing scales and assets of the colleges that they attend?I know it costs money to run a school.I also think that most schools have a responsibility to assure payment if something should go wrong[closures indictiments].Why are colleges that have tons of assets still recieving government subsidies?Until the students delve into and stand up for this principle I don’t see how it will change.

    Under the Constitution the President CAN NOT do this, He can only spend money for National Emergencies or a War period, Banner time to step up and start the Impeachment Process, that’s enough of this!!!!!!       LIVEFORFREEDOM. People must stop saying that he can’t do this. He is. Nobody is stopping him. When will we realize that only we the people can and will stop him? We have no representatives on our side anymore. No one is doing their job anymore. What will it take for everyone to finally see the truth and move?

    This is becoming crazy scarey.. This man (term used loosely) is destroying every principle that was the basis of our constitution. I still am not sure his displyed Birth Certificate was ever authenticated, I have doubts. For Him to say and do what he has been saying and doing for the past almost 3 years is bordering treason. We need a strong group of Conservative Leaders to emerge and start questioning this mans authority.. Where is John Boehner, Where is Sarah Pailin, Where is Newt Gingrich, Where is Herman Cain? We cant wait any longer and have our last bastion of our founding way of life stolen and denegrated. I wish I had the voice and the backing I would be out there saying what needs to be said.

      Well Miller maybe Joe McCarthy was not wrong,I do believe Glenn Beck asked you to read the naked Communist published in 1958. Patriotism morality spiritual life, families environmental groups hate crimes. Socialists who call themselves progressives are Marxists progressivism believes in communism by evolution rather than communism by revolution early on you were called a gradualist read the book read the goals identify the goals there are 45.Being a Christian I been criticized by my family for saying when they pass these laws you know the ones with the crosses, progressives getting into the churches speaking of social issues, and all I ever heard was the Christians need to turn the other cheek, you do not have to hate we should have been out in numbers speaking out against this many years ago. But instead we are afraid of our Christian faith and one wonder what others might think of us I believe that’s where we went wrong. As you can see where we are now as a society no morals, rule of law gone, that‘s one reason I believe Glenn left Fox news I know from my CNN days watching him he hasn’t lost sight of this but yet everybody believes he is a nut,my question is he or are we for allowing this to happen to the greatest country in the world, the question is how do we put an end to this? I mean in a nonviolent sort of way because that’s what they want violence and we can allow that to happen because then they win.

      PB we allowed this to happen go back to the DUI check points to me that was the start of the TSA why in a country as America we preach liberty but allow ourselves be subject to these check points. They serve no purpose other then to control whether you believe driving drunk is right or wrong if you get in an accident until someone under the influence then you must do the time against humanity nobody‘s fault but your own that’s liberty thank you mothers against drunk drivers. There are all kinds of these groups out there that state it best for you that we are here to save you, it‘s the same ones that helped the heroine addicts with free needles before you go on thinking I don’t know what I’m talking about when you have a family member for 27 years than accepting Christ it was not a free group handing out free needles that saved him but us the family members. But then again the communist don’t want family members because that only creates unity amongst us get to know them they are at all levels of government look around you. For me the only way out of this is Jesus Christ whether you want to believe or not that’s up to you the corruption is just too great to be solved by mere government.
