Reports: Obama Will Ask for $1.2 Trillion Increase in Debt Limit by Week’s End

Obama to Ask for Increase in Debt CeilingBack in August, Congress passed a deal to raise the nation’s debt ceiling after a highly contentious debate between the two parties. Back then, the fight was over about a $2 trillion increase in spending. So imagine what might happen when Congress returns from vacation to find the president has asked for a $1.2 trillion increase in the limit.*

According to Reuters, that’s exactly what Obama is getting ready to do:

The debt limit is projected to fall within $100 billion of the current cap by December 30. President Barack Obama is expected to ask for additional borrowing authority to increase the limit by $1.2 trillion.

Under the new budget, Congress can only vote to block the debt-ceiling extension with a disapproval resolution. Lawmakers have 15 days within receiving the request to vote down the debt limit increase.

The debt limit currently stands at $15.194 trillion and would increase to $16.394 trillion with the request.

Also of note: the supercommittee launched at the time of the debt deal that was tasked to find at least $1.2 trillion in cuts failed in late November. The minimum amount the committee was supposed cut spending by is, coincidentally, the same amount the president is set to ask Congress to increase the debt limit by. That means automatic cuts of that amount will begin in January 2013 — a condition included in last summer’s deal.

The national debt has soared because the government has run record annual deficits over the past decade. That has stoked intense partisan debate in Congress over spending and taxes. Polls show growing voter anger with the inability of both parties to reach solutions to the country’s budget problems.

In late summer, Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK), an outspoken critic of the debt deal, said the agreement wouldn’t end up cutting spending.

“In spite of what politicians on both sides are saying, this agreement does not cut any spending over 10 years. In fact, it increases discretionary spending by $830 billion,” he said at the time.

“I voted against this agreement because it does nothing to address the real drivers of our debt. It eliminates no program, consolidates no duplicative programs, cuts no tax earmarks and reforms no entitlement program. The specter of default or a credit downgrade will still hang over our economy after this deal becomes law.”

It looks like he was right.

*UPDATE:

The Associated Press notes that the new $1.2 trillion increase is in line with the debt deal agreed to in August. Back then, the debt limit increase was to take part in three steps, and there have already been two increases. This would be the third. Still, that doesn‘t mean congressional Republicans are happy and won’t try to stop it:

The Obama administration will ask Congress to raise the nation’s borrowing limit by $1.2 trillion this week, marking the third and final increase from a deal negotiated over summer.

[...]

Congress has voted twice since then to raise the debt limit by $400 billion in August and by another $500 billion in September.

House Republicans voted against the second increase. But they failed to block it because the Senate approved it. The increases are scheduled to take effect unless both chambers vote against them.

This story has been updated with more information. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

This will put gold over $2,000 an ounce and silver at $50.00 an ounce. All gold minded in China is being stockpiled and not just because it is pretty.

      Okay, this is insane.
1)The House passed the tax cut for 1 year
2)Senate and Obama come back with 2 months
      3) House puts up a lame fight – Obama campaigns with blogs in tow with his 40 dollar BS
      4) Republicans blamed for being against the tax cut, Obama scores victory.
      5) Next BS – New debt ceiling – another campaign move – another political game Obama is playing.

And of course, just weeks from this, the 2 months are up….
The Republicans should have made their message short and sweet to the media. One short mantra like “We passed it for 1 year, Senate denied and said just 2 months, Obama refused to call them back to settle it.” Repeat this mantra when any question is asked – provide only this sound bite, nothing else.

People – WAKE UP!! Republicans in office – WAKE UP!!

I like the line from Braveheart where King Richard Longshanks tells a room full of advisors, “The problem with Scotland is that it’s full of Scots.” In this case the problem with Washington is that it’s full of corrupt politicians. It’s high time all the establishment prostitutes were kicked out. It’s time to vote in Tea Party Constitutionalists who will abide by term limits and be earning no more than $75,000.00 per year with the same benefits we all have from private insurance companies like Blue Cross Blue Shield, Humana, and United Healthcare. No more Cadillac plans, no more pensions, no more inflated and bloated salaries. They should be hourly as well, have them punch in like the rest of us. This is why we DO NOT need a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution. The amendment they have now says they won’t spend more than 18% of GDP UNLESS they vote to spend more than 18% of GDP.. they won’t raise your taxes unless they vote to raise your taxes… Everything they have says UNLESS they VOTE to do so. They give the President the power to set the agenda (HE does not according to the Constitution, it’s the CONGRESS.. you know We the People.) It gives he president power to raise taxes and decide how much to spend on what. It’s really a BAD idea given the similarities to this. The BBA gives them authorities to spend that they do not currently have.

they’re going to start another war. They are trying everything they can to provoke Iran. It’ll be probably come down to a fabricated terror attack on american soil, they blame Iran and poof….we have WWIII.

Another scenario, they blame a domestic group, declare martial law, ask for more $$ to fund TSA, homeland security and begin hauling off citizens to the fema camps.

I can’t believe they think we are this stupid and are just going to bend over and allow them to hand us over to the UN and the globalists.

There has been no budget since BO has been president. How do we know how much he is really spending? The continuing resolution for 2 months (Jan.-Feb 2012) is reported to be $1 trillion. Simple math says we are spending $6 trillion a year (not $3.5 trillion reported by the media).
That means we are borrowing over $3 trillion a year, not the $1.5 trillion reported by the media.
Why aren’t the republicans demanding a budget? Where is the accountability?
Cloward and Piven and Aulinsky must be very proud. We are very close to the end.

the MSM will not tell you the truth they work for Obama. the republicans can demand a budget but without control of the senate it will fall on deaf ears. we need control of the senate in 2012 and retain the house just in case BO gets reelected then the republicans will have power. lets face it the republicans don’t have any power right now to speak of they need the senate.

I come from a family with a history in politics. I have always held the Office of the President in high respect–no matter who held the position.

It has taken me over two years to get to this point, but I am overwhelmed with hate and contempt for this man. I feel RAGE at this story. He is creating a future in which my children will be slaves. I am devastated by the shackles he is placing on the coming generations. I‘m not sure it’s even possible for us to recover from what has already been done.

Does anyone know the story of Man O’ War? He was so fine & so strong and he beat all his opponents. The solution of the time was to add more and more weight until they broke him down and other horses could have a chance to “beat” him. The story of America is similar. They both break my heart.

Why not increase the debt ceiling to $100 Trillion. That should last a few months. The GOP is working with the Democrats now to destroy our nation. If anyone complains the US Armed Forces will arrest you as a terrorist and ship you to a FEMA Concentration Camp. Both the GOP and Democrats are plunging the dagger into our backs.

Bingo. The breakpoint may be much closer than most realize. The untold story is that the fed gov’t is having cash flow problems already. All the existing programs/projects (that I’m aware of anyway) have been given budget cutbacks the past few yrs, while the fed is in the midst of record budgets (& thus deficits). A question to ask is where has all the money gone to, what will it be/has it been used for?

The rich rules over the poor, And the borrower is servant [properly slave] to the lender. (Proverbs 22:7)

      A review is in order:

Exodus 20:1-17 And God spoke … saying: “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of … the house of bondage.
      I. “You shall have no other gods before Me.

II. “You shall not make … any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; (5) you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, (6) but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.

III. “You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain…

V “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God is giving you.
      VI “You shall not murder.
VII “You shall not commit adultery.

This won’t stop until people realize that the only way to slay the beast, is to stop feeding the beast. We are working day and night in order to lose more and more of our income to these evil lunatics, which makes us in fact our own destructors. It is time for a tax revolt, and I mean a real one, the one where we stop paying to feed this monster en masse.

They won’t stop, as long as we continue to pay for our own destruction, and why should they? We’re expected to tow every line and follow every inane rule, while they run around as lawless thugs who openly scoff at the restraints we want them under (the Constitution). When did it become good and right to pay off evil lawless thugs?

We are at a point where the John Galt solution is the only viable way to put this to an end. Problem is, so many are so comitted to their own destruction that they’ll rationalize it to the bitter dregs, all the while drowning in laws, regulations, taxes and edicts.

Won’t help. We are at the point now where all this government talk of taxing the rich is meaningless. They know if they want money they just print it. A tax revolt means nothing to them. They are using the printing presses to drain the life out of our country without even a vote on it.

Ah, but you see, if we’re all not paying taxes, that means we’re all not “obeying” their edicts any longer either. The nation cannot be saved, ultimately it is going to fall. We can move to create our own economy out of their evil grips, or we can participate in funding our destroyers. End of the day, we need to let them flail about on their own and suffer their idiocy alone. They can print all the money they want, if nobody is using it (say, oh I don’t know, if some smart chaps come up with an alternative currency), the destructors get to starve.

Outside of actual violence, which would be horrific beyond compare, there are no other alternatives left I’m afraid. And “hoping and praying” is not an alternative, it’s sitting around doing nothing and wishing somebody else, be it God or man, takes care of the problem for you.

Factor in that many legitimate, moderately wealthy people are having difficulty turning a profit in this economy and there’s little to nothing to even tax anymore.
