Rev. Jim Wallis & Progressive Christian Friends Party Down at Left-Winged ‘Wild Goose Festival’

The following article is by Blaze contributing writer David Urbanski.

Christian outdoor summer festivals featuring music and speakers are nothing new. Creation. Cornerstone. Jesus Northwest. They’ve been happening every summer since the early 1970s. But a new one took place last weekend in North Carolina—the Wild Goose Festival—and its decidedly left-of-center focus on “justice, spirituality, music, and art” generated quite the buzz and drew almost 2,000 participants. Below, watch a promo video for the festival:

Rev. Jim Wallis & Progressive Christian Friends Party Down at Left Winged Wild Goose Festival

Jim Wallis speaking at the Wild Goose Festival

And whereas Christian festivals always feature music as the prime drawing card, the Wild Goose Festival took flight on the strength of its cadre of left-leaning speakers, such as Jay Bakker, Brian McLaren, Tony Campolo, and Shane Claiborne. Most notable was Sojourners’ Jim Wallis, who “called us movingly, sanely well to organize, march and provide the wind behind Obama’s sails in order to change his priorities from war to education, compassion and justice,” blogged Frank Schaeffer, a left-leaning Christian leader who attended the festival.

Schaeffer—son of the late evangelical Christian thinker and author, Francis Schaeffer—has distanced himself from his father’s views in recent years. To wit: He titled his blog “The Wild Goose ‘Revival’ for Doubters and Jesus Victims (Like Me)” and observed that “we understood each other, understood why it was a big deal that some of us were gay, open and happy in spite of everything, understood why some of us still wanted to follow Jesus, even though the world we came from—far right, hate-and-fear-driven wacko religion—has done its best to turn Jesus into Attila the Hun and/or Michele Bachmann.”

Indeed, it’s seemed that the most common denominator among festival organizers and attendees is that they “love God but aren’t thrilled with institutional Christianity, particularly the religious right,” according to a USA Today article.

The festival Web site notes that Wild Goose “is rooted in the Christian tradition and therefore open to all regardless of belief, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, denomination or religious affiliation.” A writer for the National Catholic Reporter observed “young tattooed evangelicals, musicians with instruments slung over their shoulders, gay Christians of all stripes and seasoned members of the Christian Left emerged, most carrying backpacks, water bottles and sleeping bags.” Most notably, longtime Christian singer Jennifer Knapp—who has come out as a lesbian—played the festival.

Already, the festival has drawn the ire of more conventional evangelical bloggers who don’t like its broader view of Christian spirituality or openness to gays and lesbians. “The wise Christian will have nothing to do with these neo-Gnostic fools who’ve unbuckled themselves from the Word of God and have embarked upon their Wild Goose Chase of subjective experience,” wrote Southern Baptist blogger Ken Silva of New Hampshire-based Apprising Ministries.

Not that the Wild Goose Festival is a new and unique phenomenon: It’s modeled after Greenbelt, a British Christian rock festival now in its 37th year. (And in case you were wondering, the term “wild goose” is a Celtic metaphor for the Holy Spirit: noisy, passionate, not easily tamed and tending to flock together.)

The political tone of the festival could hardly be called Reagan-esque. One of the speakers, Rev. William Barber—North Carolina state president of the NAACP—shared his thoughts last Friday under a tent to about 200 people. Barber, who’s been arrested three times in recent months protesting budget cuts to social programs, said the Tea Party has adopted the language of bigotry and racism, according to a second National Catholic Reporter article. Obama’s election has also produced “a violent backlash that always starts with language,” Barber noted, such as “Take Back America.” Five of the six elements of the Tea Party take their roots from hate groups, Barber said. Watch Barber, below, discussing “economic justice” at a previous protest:

Some people said Obama’s election “would represent post-racism,” Barber added. “But we know better than that.” The current Republican strategy is “to segregate voting power, wealth and educational opportunity,” he said. “Tax cuts are about isolating wealth in the pockets of a few.”

Interestingly one online comment from the National Catholic Reporter article took issue with the decided lack of color among Wild Goose attendees, as well as their motivations:

“Dr. [Martin Luther] King would have had nothing to do with a bunch of white people lying on blankets and sipping white wine. He would have told them to get off their asses and do something with the Gospel. I’m tired of people bastardizing Dr. King’s legacy by associating it with soft causes, especially the black people who have made a living by saying they knew him way back when. The only place you can understand Dr. King is in the trenches, not on picnic blankets. These are the kinds of Christians Dr. King marched AGAINST.”

Schaeffer concluded differently:

“Wild Goose Festival is going to grow into the largest, best run, most dynamic religious happening in the U.S. There are lots of smart spiritually hungry people with their eyes open…Next year, be there. And if you’re an atheist, agnostic, whatever, you’ll like it too because you’ll be amongst those rare sort of religious people who will admit that we’re all in the same boat and that certainty is a killer and humility is all that works, if, that is, you want to live and let live instead of using ideas as weapons.”

I hope none of you associate these morons with NC bc this meeting happened in NC. I am a proud North Carolina girl, love my country, follow Jesus, and am a Christian but these people and I have nothing in common. I do want to rid our state of corruption brought on by democratic leadership, such as Edwards, Easley, Purdue and more, whom have all covered their tracks pretty well just like Obama. I don’t know about the rest of the Wild Geese in this mob, but I can tell you Barber of the NAACP is nothing but a racists and hatemonger. He comes around to stir up hate in our schools and cares nothing for our children’s education. These people are only looking trouble and will not be happy until they anger us into a revolution. May God Bless America.

When will christians start understanding that there are alot of pretenders in the christian faith who are purposely leading God’s children astray with lies. They only understand lies because their “god” is the father of lies, the devil. They are fools who intent to bring everyone down with them.

    1. You can’t know the heart of a person. My Bible tells me that there is only one way to heaven, throught faith in Jesus Christ. Therefore, one’s own Salvation is between man and God.
    2. There is beauty in the sacrafice that Jesus made. We do not have to fix anything before we come to the cross. We have to simply offer ourselves.
    3. God does not hate gay people. God does not hate people who are active participants in a gay lifestyle. If that were the case then He would hate all who are alcoholics but have faith or those who lust. We all sin. It is very clear in the Bible that homosexuality is a sin, but so is anger and a slip of the tongue. It truly is sin that He hates.
    4. Just because a person struggles with a sin does not mean that he or she is not saved. The goal in this life is not to sin less than others; it is to recognize our own sin, be devastated by it and then pick ourselves back up and do it all over again, continually recognizing our need for a Savior.
    5. It isn’t the job of one Christian to judge another, especially one he or she does not know.
    6. Finally, and the most important thing second only to Salvation in Christ is this: hatred, judgement and cruelty are not ways to show others the absolute stunning, selfless, perfectly beautiful Lord that Jesus truly is. To fellow Christians, I beg you, remember who you represent and represent Him will. God doesn’t need defending. He needs people to follow in the footsteps of the true, Gospel Jesus.

It is one thing to commit sin, even homosexulity but fight against it and ask God for forgiveness. It is another thing to not only practice homosexuality, promote it to others, be PROUD of it and try convince the world that it is acceptable and not a sin.

They and those who support them want to make sins a virtue and virtues a sin. Furthermore, their arguements that we should not judge them is false. We are not judging them, God is. We simply acknowledge what God has already said about the acts of homosexuality. If they have a problem with God’s judgement on it, they should take it up with him. Not us.

Why is it that so many of you ignore the scriptures that you don’t like? Judge not lest you be judged was not written in the manner you are using it. You are taking it out of context and not reading the entire verse. It means don’t judge with an evil heart.

Christ and the Apostles spoke often of staying vigilant against those who preached false lessons. You cannot do that without judging; however, it must be from a place of sorrow and caring. You do so because you know that they have erred from the scriptures. We are also supposed to admonish each other gently….

1Cor. 6:2-3 Do you not know that the saints [saved] will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases? Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life!
John 7:24 Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.
Phil. 1:10 so that you may be able to discern [judge] what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ…
Phil. 1:7 It is right for me to feel this way about all of you…

It‘s understandable that people don’t want to stop sinning – we’re all sinners. But to take scripture out of context to justify the continuance of it is just wrong. Homosexual sex is a sin. God doesn’t ask but commands Christians to stop sinning. That means if you’re engaging in homosexual sex on a regular basis (can you say ‘lifestyle’?), then you aren’t trying to stop sinning. The same applies to heterosexual sex outside of marriage. The same applies to ALL sins, both of the flesh and of the mind.

And above poster is right – proclaiming that God is okay with it is blasphemy – also, proclaiming the Word of God is not judging. God loves ALL His children but He wants us to turn away from our sin and concentrate on Him (that means constantly learning His Word). “Command” doesn’t mean “try”. Every Christian has the power to turn away from sin – you were separated from it the moment you trusted Christ for your salvation. That doesn‘t mean you’re not ever going to sin again and it most certainly isn’t a license to sin:

“What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. We who died to sin, how shall we any longer live therein?” Romans 6:1-2

I completely agree that taking the Scriptures out of context is not right. However, you still can‘t know a person’s heart. You can’t know their relationship with Jesus. I agree, also, However, I have an issue with Christians judging others with hatred, as a lot of the former posts on here suggested, when these people don’t even know the heart of those they are condemning. Jesus would have admonished them, yes, but with a pure heart, not hatred. My prayer is that I can see all people as Jesus sees them. Not with the heart of politics. I don’t like that this festival has happened. However, for me to say that a person across the country does not have eternal life because of the veil over their eyes is wrong. Sin is a constant struggle. Again, I don’t like it, but I think it is unfair to point our fingers.

I agree, but you can certainly know when someone is sinning and trying to justify it by claiming it‘s okay when it isn’t. You try to help them by reminding them of the Truth (and, yes, not in a hateful way)….. I just don‘t react well to those who point at me and say I’m judging when all I’m trying to do is NOT allow them to get away with lying about the Word of God. We’ve all witnessed the same behavior almost on a daily basis when commuting. Some jerk cuts you off, almost hitting your vehicle and then gets mad at you when you let him know it was wrong. I have a strong dislike for that kind of arrogance and don’t react to it very well at all.

I totally agree with that. We have become to politcally correct. It just gets to me when Christians attempt to admonish another based on one aspect of their life when they don‘t know that person or the person isn’t even a part of the same church or circle. I think if a person is going to admonish they must truly love that person and not in a “lets love one another because we are Christians” kind of way. Rather, a friend to a friend. In the end, all of this makes me more said than anything because of all the lies that we are constantly fed about the weighing of the law and the Gospel. Jesus’ sacrafice is not a get out of jail free card (at least not when it comes to owning up to our sin). However, it also doesn’t allow us to do whatever we want in the name of Jesus which, unfortunately, happens on both conservative and liberal ends.

I think the point made by ALL the posters in this section is a valid and important one. Like JKENDAL, I too “do not react well” to arrogance and defiance. I try, sincerely, to approach those who break the commandments of God (or even the laws of this land) with love and concern for them. I’m not always successful at it, but I keep trying AND asking God to forgive my weaknesses.

We (conservatives, fans of Beck, patriots-whatever you prefer to call yourselves) need to be doing all we can to be worthy of the power and guidance of God in these last days. That includes being more like doves than serpents, and I am openly admitting that responding like a soft, gentle bird is not NEARLY as satisfying to my mortal desires as hissing and striking like a snake. Nope. And, depending on who you are responding to- in most cases, it is also a heck of a lot less effective.
BUT, evil influence is SMART and devious, and will always try to get us to act in UN-Christlike ways and it is most insidious in the Christian who believes that their “righteous indignation” (which I believe is a gift of discernment) should be allowed to run unchecked until it becomes a raging river (which is a curse).

Hi, my name is Jabber and I’m an Angerholic. There. I said it. I claim it. And now that I have recognized it in myself, I must repent and strive to eradicate it from my life. Meetings will be held here with lots of buttered popcorn and Pepsi. :)

Radke chose Community organizing Andy Stern chose Union’s, Ayers education Wallis chose religion since it was the one area where people would least expect a radical to be in other words they all are trying to lead the country into Communism by stealth or by under sheeps clothing or out in front in plain sight and in the open with a captive audience . Anyone can call themselves a Christian but that doesn’t make it so. JESUS says in Matthew 7:21-23 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!” Being a Christian means that you follow CHRIST and HIS teachings. You die to your flesh and pick up your cross daily. These folks are living for their flesh and worldly desires and not by the Word of GOD. JESUS also tells us in Matthew 7:13-14 that “narrow is the gate and that few find it”. I truly pray that these people would come to repentence that leads to salavation through JESUS CHRIST before it’s too late.

“How do you win the “won”? How do you say to someone who says they know Jesus no you don’t?”
I am a part of a street witnessing ministry and the hardest people to talk to are the so-called “Christians” that are actually relativist and pluralist and have no clue of the true gospel message and salvation through JESUS. They like to live for their flesh and come up with their own “beliefs” to follow which are contrary to the Bible. We always take them to the scriptures and let the HOLY SPIRIT convict them. JESUS made some very radically statements saying that “HE is the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the FATHER except through HIM.” (John 14:6) We take them to John 3 when Nicodemus comes to JESUS and we talk about what it means to be born again. That being born again is a new life with CHRIST. You are made new by the HOLY SPIRIT dwelling inside you. Romans 6, Ephesians 4, Colossians 3, are just some of the verses that talk about becoming a new creature in CHRIST. Romans 8 talks about dying to your flesh and walking in the SPIRIT. Hebrews 10:26-27 says “For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries.” You probably know all these scriptures but I just want to encourage you to speak the truth in love. LIberal progressives will sink to the lowest gutter of filth, lie cheat and steal, and create the most vile of hypocrisy to discredit those who don’t agree with their evil and destructive ways. Then turn around and call us intolerant liars. Just look at that hate-filled tirade of Van Jones last weekend. Every word out of his disgusting sewer of a mouth was an outrageous lie. Anyone with two brain cells to rub together could have easily seen right through it. But not the leftist morons. They still defend his thieving racist crimes against humanity.

Obviously, this gathering of leftist moonbats is attempting to drum up some “Christian” support for themselves. Unfortunately, their politics spell out nothing but the utter destruction of America. No thanks…

Spiritual dead-heads. Imitators trying to sell the idea that God can not only be mocked, but can be totally cool with any kind of sexual deviant behavior, because they are enlightened.

There is a great and mighty coming day of the Lord. He will carry judgment with him, and he will slay the beast and those that follow the beast with a sword that comes from his mouth. the blood will flow up to the bridles on the horses.

Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Mocking of the Lord is the height of blasphemy.

Meaning that even a doofus like me can have a measure of God’s wisdom and truth.
No way are these people walking in the truth. When thinking about Wallis, it is scary knowing what he is bringing down on himself. Leading people astray the way he is. I’m not judging, just decerning the truth from God’s Word. Wallis‘ fate is in God’s hands as with everyone.

They are self centered, inward looking, unspiritual, ungodly, commandment breaking lawless ones who spew hate constantly at those who atleast try to live in accordance with Gods will, law, mercy and grace through Jesus Christ who set the real captives free from the bondage of all sin. Social Justice and all this devisive talk will melt away and be un-needed as they would then truly love their brothers and sisters if they themselves would really repent of their own ungoldy ways before the Lord. But no, its not about that, again its all about politics, control and more power over everyone else they deem unholy and misguided. I can’t wait to meet my jailer and torturer who will no doubt be one of these people. Its coming folks. timarina – “Judge Not, yet you not be Judged.”- Actually if you read the Bible, Christians are admonished to discern and judge those who call themselves Christians. The judge not command relates to judging non-Christians for the very things you do yourself.

People often put “judge not….” out there when you are just calling sin what it is …sin. We are comanded to be salt and light that means we call sin sin. Christians real ones do not say, “you are going to hell” but they do say homosexuality is sin or murder is sin ect. If we do not do that how will the world know those things will kill them?

The socialists’ credo is a direct quote from karl marx- “From each according to his ability, to each according to his need”. We heard zero say the same thing just yesterday using different words. Here’s what I heard him say, ” We must force the producers in this country to give up their production so I can give it to those who can’t (or aren’t willing to) produce.” There’s another word for this – it’s called THEFT! And theft is theft whether or not it is sanctioned by the government.

And these people call themselves Christians. Jesus had a word for these kinds of people – hypocrites…..

@ Rational Man- Judging is ok as long as it is done righteously. John 7:24 Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.

Don’t judge hypocritically Matthew 7:3 And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye’; and look, a plank is in your own eye? 5 Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

We need to judge in order to expose that which is wrong Ephesians 5:11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.
