Rev. Sharpton Responds to Blaze ‘Shocking Racism’ Video

Rev. Al Sharpton is responding to a video posted on The Blaze Tuesday morning, by saying the message emphasized in the video was not indicative of the “whole rally.”
The Blaze stands by the video which includes Sharpton’s concerns over the 8/28 “Restoring Honor” rally in DC and his assertion on Saturday that “They want to disgrace this day.” The video contrasts segments from Saturday’s “Restoring Honor” rally with the “Redeem the Dream” event held on 8/28/00 in the same location. That event was co-sponsored by Sharpton’s National Action Network.
http://blip.tv/file/4066020
The most controversial sections of the video include comments by New Black Panther activist Malik Zulu Shabazz. Shabazz would become the leader of the New Black Panthers shortly after the 2000 rally.
The video features Sharpton’s affirmation of the New Black Panthers and Shabazz declaring solidarity with Sharpton.
After leading a call that has the “black jury” finding “white America” guilty of “injustice and racism,” Shabazz calls on black young people, including “gang members,” to unite against the “common enemy.”
Shabazz goes on to articulate a “black dream that when we see caskets rolling in the black community…that we will see caskets and funerals in the community of our enemy as well.”
I talked with Rev. Sharpton Tuesday evening about his concerns over the video. He disagreed with The Blaze characterization of the event as a “Sharpton rally.” He explained that his National Action Network was a co-sponsor of the event along with the Southern Leadership Christian Conference.
Sharpton further explained that he disagreed with the message of Shabazz and says he expressed his disagreement at the time. I asked Sharpton how and when he made that expression. He indicated that the overall tone of the “whole rally” made the message clear. Further, he said that he was asked about Shabazz’s comments at a news conference after the event. Sharpton said he did not remember hearing Shabazz’s “caskets” comments. He recalled being asked if he agreed with Shabazz’s view that the dream of Dr. King had become a “nightmare.” He said he indicated his disagreement with that sentiment. The Blaze could not independently verify Sharpton’s recollection about the news conference.
We did reexamine the video of the event. Sharpton does return to the podium immediately after Shabbaz. He makes no comment about Shabbaz’s speech and simply moves on to introduce the next speaker.
I did ask Rev. Sharpton about his charge that the “Restoring Honor” rally would “disgrace this day.” Sharpton said he felt that the actual event was different than how he believed Glenn Beck had originally characterized it, but that he didn’t want to get into a “name calling thing with him.” After he expressed some areas of agreement with Beck, I asked him for his current opinion of the 8/28 event. He said it was “fine.”

Posted on August 31, 2010 at 10:30pmAl, your lies and deceit is catching up to you. You tried to spin this on O‘Reily and that didn’t work. The clip on Becks show today really shows your lies. You continue to try and keep the racial divide going as much as possible. Time for some soul searching, Rev. Sharpton, it’s not too late for you to close the book on race baiting and really try to unite all Americans regardless of race, religion, etc.

Posted on August 31, 2010 at 10:29pmCan anyone tell me exactly why one should care what Al Sharpton has to say? He was “ordained” at the tender age of “9 or 10” per his bio…has no legitimate job, other than to deem himself all important and knowledgable about race relations, simply because of his skin color. Why does the media cover this clown?

Posted on August 31, 2010 at 10:56pmI agree with you & the only explanation I can give is because he gets face time, so he becomes the “de facto” spokesman for the race industry. Like Paris Hilton, he’s famous————for being famous. The light at the end of the tunnel, I believe, is that his act (along with J. Jackson’s) is a rapidly depreciating asset. As more & more minorities move up the American food chain in politics/business his blatant race baiting simply won’t resonate. I believe that process is beginning to accelerate.

Posted on August 31, 2010 at 10:25pmSharpton isn’t the first or only one of a long line of “wolves in sheep’s clothing” Christ so characterized the false power-mongers whom He said would “rend and tear the flock”, and warned the faithful to “Be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.” Sharpton and his fellow, false, ‘spiritual’ leaders have it backwards. Jesus said to Pilate: “My kingdom is not of this world, for then my servants would fight.” He set the example of meekness before brutality, and so we should likewise…the contrast is profound–as it was between the the two rallys on 8/28.

Posted on August 31, 2010 at 10:20pmYou can see that some people will always use the us verses them type of speech. Glenn never said anything about having anything black or white. I think Martin Luther King Jr. had a message about people eventually getting to the place where color was not an issue. In fact when he mentioned color it was all about us all living together as he paints a picture where what color you are will only serve as a testimony of what God can do to bring us together. We will never achieve his “Dream” so long as any race uses the us verses them mentality. Remember your scars can either keep you in the past or propel you into the future and ultimately into your destiny.

Posted on August 31, 2010 at 10:19pmI believe the tempered response to the follow-up questions about Glenn Beck and the 8/28 event are the direct result of Glenn having stated, on several occasions, that he has no personal animosity toward Al Sharpton. I believe this is an example of the success of the driving theme behind Glenn’s message, one of love and its source, and the true measure of a man is a forgiving spirit in the face of undeserved assailing. This truth resonated with Al Sharpton at his core, and his truer character was compelled to respond in that light.
Captain America
Posted on September 1, 2010 at 12:01amI disagree. I don’t think that was his inner character. I think he had the light of truth thrust in his face, and he couldn’t respond. Maybe he should get a portable teleprompter.

Posted on September 1, 2010 at 7:31amOn the surface I can appreciate your sentiment. I would suggest that the targeted attacks on Glenn would put him in a better position to articulate what I am about to suggest as he is currently a target because he hold truth and openly speaks of it and would admit that his oppression is to a lesser degree then Al Sharpton found himself in when he promoted truth. It was not so many years ago that terrible oppression was thrust upon the black people in America, and I cannot imagine the scars left and bitterness engendered in him and others in the civil rights movement that were endured as a simple fact of life simply because of their color. When you add to that the years of targeted abuse in every form, from repeated physical violence that was largely endorsed by the culture, legislative impediments to full citizenship, and systemic oppression, I understand the resentment and fear of letting go. I compare it to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. If you are forced to suffer enough it, on some levels, it changes who you are, and I think that is the Al Sharpton who uses inflammatory speech based in part on that remembered pain and fear. I think that is also why he refused to go on the attack of Glenn and the 8/28 event because that truer part of him, undamaged by the lifetime of abuse, still can see the light and sees it in Glenn. Violence can change people in tragic and unexpected ways and everyone has their breaking point. I maintain that there is still light in Al Sharpton and Glenns intentions, on some level, mitigate Al’s experience just enough to consider trusting again.

Posted on September 2, 2010 at 5:46amNo – YOU’RE thinking about the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In order to gain more adherents to the Liberation Theology gospel (an oxymoron for sure because that has nothing to do with Good News), you have to put your energies toward showing black people how they have been, presently are, and will continue to be, under the shoe of the white man UNLESS they’re willing to “act up”, and turn it upsidedown.

That is a threat, and I think you should be excused from being here, since threatening people is intimidating and frightening, not to mention illegal. Furthermore, you say you don’t want any liberal….racist of any kind here…Well, then you may need to leave too. Because calling someone the N word, and to threaten them places you in that category of racism, and terrorist, because you threatened to destroy someone, or their property.
