Rev. Sharpton Says Raise Debt Ceiling ‘In the Name of Ronald Reagan’

Yesterday on MSNBC the Reverend Al Sharpton squared off against Congressman Mo Brooks of Alabama about the debt ceiling negotiations, and Sharpton invoked Ronald Reagan to make his point. The Reverend pulled out an audio clip of Ronald Reagan from 1987 that apparently criticized gamesmanship surrounding the debt ceiling back then. Based on this, the Reverend instructed Congressman Brooks to “go back and do the right thing tonight” by raising the debt ceiling.
As to the audio clip in question, Reagan did say “Congress consistently brings the government to the edge of default before facing its responsibility. This brinksmanship threatens the holders of government bonds, and those who rely on social security and veteran’s benefits.”
However, as seen in the full Reagan radio address here, Sharpton takes the excerpt he plays of the radio completely out of context. The Congress at that time was threatening a default to force President Reagan’s signature on legislation meant to pave the way for new taxes. In that same radio address, Reagan said:
“For those who say more taxes will solve our deficit problem, they are wrong. Every time Congress increases taxes, the deficit does not decrease, spending increases. It’s time for a clear and consistent policy to reduce the Federal budget deficit.”
It would seem difficult to square this reality with the current position of the democrats and the Obama administration. But this did not deter Sharpton in the least. Watch the video below and see the Reverend Al make the case that Obama is somehow like Reagan when it comes to the national debt:

Posted on July 20, 2011 at 7:08amAnd we give this guy air time, why?? These dems glom onto a buzz word (lately “Ronald Reagan” recently uttered by BO) and use it whenever they can, even if they use it out of context. They have no shame and are relying on ignorant American people to hear what they say and believe it, then perpetuate the lie.

He and Jesse Jackson are the real racists out there and every time I see them getting national coverage it makes me sick. They are both out for themselves only and thrive on any publicity they can get.

Posted on July 20, 2011 at 8:40amI listened to this clip last night, and could not even imagine that this clip was being used on the Democratic side. It just shows their stupidity. Ronald Regan was slamming the congress for even putting us in the situation of having to raise the debt. If the point had been taken then, we wouldn’t even be having this discussion now.
Report Post »Isn’t it amazing that the president said he will veto ANY bill that makes the US only spend what it takes in? He is saying, “I need the legal right to spend more than we can afford”.
Guess what happens if we raise the debt ceiling now, we will be having this discussion with the new president in 1 1/2 years and the Dems will be screaming that we are killing the country.

Posted on July 20, 2011 at 10:26amI agree. Sharpton is nothing but a shyster who loves to play the race card whenever anyone criticizes him or his political stance.
Furthermore, the financial situation today is not remotely similar to what it was when Reagan was president. To take his comments out of context and twist them for his own purposes is typical Sharpton behavior.
Reagan’s presidency was based on three principals: smaller government, lower taxes and more personal freedom. Today’s democrats seem to have a three pronged solution to every problem: bigger government, higher taxes and LESS personal freedom. For any of them to even utter the name of Reagan is a travesty. For Obama to invoke it as if he would approve of his policies today is simply more evidence that he is an idealogue without a clue.

Posted on July 20, 2011 at 10:00amI lived through the Reagan years too. Reagan was NOT a small government republican, he TRIPLED the size of the government payroll and wasted a trillion dollars on a failed Star Wars defense system and lined the pockets of his cronies.
Report Post »Communism (the USSR) collapsed under its own weight and Reagan happened to be sitting in the White House at the time. The Berlin Wall would have come down regardless of who would have been sitting in the Oval Office. He was a great orator and understood PR very well. In today’s world his policies would be tagged RINO to you people.

As Blazers always say, “watch the other hand”. Well, Sharpton always is the hand in your face and he’s great at it. He’s loud, obnoxious, and never fears just blabbering on about things he has no clue about. He makes great noise, the media turns it’s attention to him like a great shiny object, he gets all the limelight and can slam the Right as hard as he can, and meanwhile we miss the attention on the real issue.

Posted on July 20, 2011 at 2:48amInteresting article on the debt ceiling:
Debt Ceiling Psy Op: Broken Promises Broken Dreams
White House and Congressional efforts to reach a Grand Bargain are merely a distraction. The basis for such a bargain – reduce spending so the debt limit can be raised – is fraud and folderol. Nothing that we’ve seen suggests the government’s even pretending to solve the debt problem.
Last week’s discussions, before they fell apart, centered on deficit cuts of $4 trillion, $2 trillion or $1.5 trillion over 10 years. These proposals are nonsense. For example, $2 trillion in deficit cuts over 10 years amounts to a deficit reduction of just $200 billion per year.
The government’s current deficit is $1.65 trillion. So under that proposal the government would have to borrow $1.45 trillion per year rather than $1.65 trillion. What this means is, either way, over the next 10 years the national debt will double. Moreover, what this means is the big charade going on in Washington is not addressing the debt problem.
