Revealed: Here’s What Facebook Just Changed About Your Profile

Say goodbye to your Facebook profile — at least its design. In the coming weeks your Facebook profile will become a timeline, which Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg says will allow you to “express who you are” and “help you tell the story of your life.”

This is what Facebook's new Timeline will look like. (Image: f8 conference via BuzzFeed)

“Express,” one of Zuck’s key words for the day, alludes to what feels like transformation of Facebook from social networking to blog site. This is especially apparent in the layout of the new profile timelines, with a banner image spanning the top and categorizing content (map of where you’ve been, things you’ve cooked, your apps, etc.). Timeline will show “the story of your life.”

Watch Facebook’s promotional video for Timeline:

Mashable’s Ben Parr writes that Timeline will “resurface all the content you have created on Facebook.” Could this be an eek moment for some? Facebook will automatically populate your timeline when it is released, you will be able to control the life events you may not want up there and update with some Facebook may have missed. Zuckerberg said “It’s fun and easy to fill out your timeline.”

If you’re interested in being one of the early adopters of Timeline before its mass release, sign up here. This is basically how a Timeline profile will look:

At the conference, Zuckerberg also confirmed previous speculation that Facebook would be updating the “like” button, allowing you to more than just “like” something:

“We are making it so you can connect to anything you want. Now you don’t have to like a book, you can just read a book,” he said. “You don’t have to like a movie; you can just watch a movie.”

Zuckerberg also talked about Spotify, a music streaming service entered into a partnership with Facebook earlier this year. Zuckerberg said at the conference that Spotify allows Facebook users to listen to music that their friends are listening to. When you are listening to Spotify, or using any Facebook app Zuckerberg notes, it will be added to the ticker, a new feature launched this week along with other updates to the News Feed page. that tracks real time Facebook friend activity.

It is through the ticker that Zuckerberg believes apps, music and more will be spread. See this vision in action:

Facebook users are already expressing themselves over these impending changes. Here are a few snapshots of comments on the Facebook blog:

GEE, thanks Mark Zuckerburg. I don’t and never will have a “facebook” page. If people need to get ahold of me, I have a cell phone and email. I think that’s enough exposure. To all of you who have a facebook page, best of luck.

USMC, i agree with you 100 percent i also don’t even own, nor do i want a cell phone along with that i own an old car without any of that GPS or onstar crap. People had better start to WAKE UP and see that our freedoms are being taken away a little each day by allowing this company to keep information on us and some other GPS company track us everywhere we go and don’t forget about the smart phones recording everything you do for the past 365 days.

I am getting to the point that i have, and most of you will say oh no this guy is nuts, but i am thinking about not using computers from home anymore at all, if i need to use the computer i can go to the library and use their computers and that will keep me private from the data miners that want to keep track of me and my IPS address.

One more thing if you have time look up whats happening over in England they are going to a national I D card, they have cameras watching them everywhere they go and now some people in their government are talking about putting RF I D chips into each and every person under their skin so the government can track EVERYTHING their SUBJECTS (that’s right once this starts they OWN YOU) not citizens do. Once that happens you no longer have ANY FREEDOM and i will FIGHT that happening here TO THE DEATH, we are people not NUMBERS.

I have a facebook page and a business page, but only so people can find me if they want to. All my facebook “friends” are people I actually know personally. I never post anything on it. No pictures, no personal info, no “status updates”, and I don’t “Like” any pages. I have all the privacy settings locked down so even my “friends” can’t see any more than the general public. I basically use it for a way to find and be found, and also a way to snoop on my friends. And I play in an occasional fake poker tournament and smoke a fake cigar.

This is off-topic, but since someone mentioned OnStar: I’m a little old-fashioned. My truck is equipped with “OffStar”, and I control the high-beams with my foot. It has a carbureted big-block engine, and gets 10 miles to the gallon if I’m going down hill with a tail wind. If gas goes up to $10 a gallon, I’m still going to drive my gas hog. It sounds cool, and I’m trying to make my carbon footprint as huge as possible. I like big stuff.

You are what we call late adopters. You use cell phones and email, but 15 years ago there was someone saying, “I don’t have an email, never will – if someone wants to get a hold of me they can write me”. So, 15 years from now, the late adopters will be saying “I don’t have a ____, never have never will – if someone wants to talk to me they can facebook me”.

It’s the cycle of [product] life. You aren’t impressing anyone with your inability to keep with the times, you are just labeling yourself in the late majority.

Nothing to be proud of, but congrats?

      Bush troll,
Facebook, twitter, google and all of “social media” are for tracking and herding. Nobody is trying to impress you. People are trying to impress UPON you to stop being a stupid little sheeple. Do some actual reading into the technology used and why people at facebook left early on. Cycle of life? Social media is the exact opposite of life. “You’re not impressing anyone” with anything.

      @DTOM_Jericho
That’s weird, because my housemate and I are both software engineers and he actually worked for Facebook. I think we understand Facebook’s technology a little more deeply than the average person (that would be you).

Facebook openly data-mines, yeah, but the only data they have to work with are things you supply them. Their only exposure to you is A) The things you do and say on their site, and B) The things you do and say on sites that supply them with information. If you aren’t doing or saying anything online then facebook should be irrelevant to you.

Also it should be noted that they data-mine anonymously. That is to say, while their servers know all the ins and outs about you, no human does. There are 500 Million+ users on facebook sharing literally billions of bits of information daily. No one working at facebook can possibly know or care what YOU are doing, it’s all done using algorithms.

      So cut the act.

      @VOTEBUSH

You really shouldn‘t tell half truth’s about the nature and capabilities of Facebook.

Its information mining is initially anonymous simply because of the sheer volume of information being mined. That doesn’t mean its not being recorded, tagged, categorized and saved.

It’s only anonymous for as long as the person is. Stand up and become slightly noticeable or an annoyance to the wrong person, and this ‘anonymous’ information is surprisingly available.

I think most people intrinsically know you are lying anyway, but it was a nice try. I’m sure it was WAY beyond your ability to consider an algorithm could also be written to filter through FB databases looking for pieces of data with one of several specific attributes. Add in some facial mapping software and you’ve got yourself Big Brother.

Considering Zuckerberg is a world class DB with not much in the way of ethics, I’d rather err on the side of him having less information rather than more.

What Facebook “IS” is a voluntary database that the government really wanted to construct on you that it didn’t get popular support for (or funding) that you yourself create. Sure Mark is the guy who created it. I know that. But government still uses it as a ‘tool’ for a long list of stuff it otherwise wouldn’t have access to. That YOU! provide to them. 5th Amendment Rights? Not if you have made it ‘public’ knowledge.

If I have to watch an advertisement I would rather it be about something that interests me.

      Definitely,

I always appreciate my propaganda to be more effective by analyzing my likes and dislikes to determine which half-truth is more likely to be believed. Working in advertising I can attest to the fact that we NEVER twist the message to show only the good points and obscure the bad.

Add in the fact that information is NEVER misused by those in power and I‘m extremely confident that it definitely wouldn’t be used to manipulate public opinion more effectively and create a more loveable totalitarian state.

LOTS of losers feel like celebrities when they post information about themselves on Facebook or any other social networking site. You have “followers”, “friends”, even “fans.” There are sections that show which movies, TV Shows, and music artists you like right there on your page.

So, a loser’s pathetic update that reads “Just got my hair done” makes them feel famous and important next to the info about real celebrities, real movies, TV shows, recording artists…REAL famous people. People try to be like celebrities, sad but true!

So with Facebook, everybody’s a “star”: At least in their own little world and circle of “acquaintances”. I had a Facebook account for about 3 months, never posted to it, deleted it. Of course I can log back in at anytime and it will still be there.

I have a fake Facebook account under a fake name that I use to find out more about potential job candidates and others I work with. Some people tell you everything on there. In two minutes or less I can find out an applicant’s circle of friends, their character, where they are from, where they went to school, etc. just by looking at their Facebook page. That’s how I personally use it.

Whoever can see ALL of this data has a very useful tool for tracking people. Social networking is the precursor to chipping I’m afraid. How cool will it be when we all have chips and everything we do and everywhere we go just automatically updates to our Facebook so everyone will kn
