Revealed: Michigan Union Manual Instructs Teachers on How to Use Children as ‘Propaganda’

“For more than two years, the Michigan Education Association [MEA] has had a manual that urges its members to use students as propaganda in contract negotiations and also lays out how to organize strikes,” writes Tome Gantert of Michigan Capitol Confidential.
Considering the fact that teacher strikes are illegal in Michigan, some may find it odd that the MEA has been encouraging this sort of behavior. In fact, the MEA has done a lot more than just “encourage” potentially illegal activity. As Gantert reports, the organization produced an anonymously written 28-page manual titled, “Building Full Capacity Locals — Crisis Planning, It’s Never Too Early To Start!”
While much of the rhetoric in this “crisis planning” handbook is unsettling (”The worst time to plan for a crisis is when you are in the middle of one, so crisis planning should commence at the same time that planning for actual bargaining begins”), perhaps the most disturbing moment occurs when one section appears to quote almost verbatim Saul Alinksy’s “Rules For Radicals.”
Alinsky instructs his followers to “Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it.” Likewise, the MEA manual instructs teachers to “Pick a target—personalize—and polarize the opposition [pg. 17].” And those are just the verbatim quotes; the entire manual is a handbook for creating, managing, and profiting from crises.
Representatives of the MEA were unavailable for comment when The Blaze contacted them for more information.
“What’s really troubling about this publication isn’t what’s inside, it’s right there on the cover. This organization has decided it is above the law that has empowered them so much in so many other ways,” said Paul Kersey, director of labor policy at the Mackinac Center for Public Policy, according to the Michigan Capitol Confidential article.
“We have given them the authority to represent employees who individually may not support them, and to collect dues and agency fees from them and have them fired if they refuse. But the union does not feel it is bound by the law’s prohibition of government strikes,” he said.
The manual states that the “MEA…supports and defends its members who engage in a strike,” which, again, is illegal in Michigan.
But if an out-and-out strike isn’t your thing, don’t worry! With a variety of passive aggressive protest methods, the manual has you covered. One of the passive methods suggested by the MEA is “Work-To-Rule” actions where employees refuse to do anything outside of what is included in their contract.
“Understand that a local is limited only by its collective imagination when it comes to specific work-to-rule actions,” the manual states. “If you carefully examine your contract you will probably find a number of work-to-rule opportunities. Keep in mind, however, that you don’t want to violate the contract or past practice; you want to adhere to it … exactly!”
And of course, what union protest would be complete without the exploitation of children in the bargaining process?
“In terms of a bargaining message, the public responds most positively when we talk about children, quality in the classroom and the future,” the MEA manual states. “There may come a time when it’s appropriate to talk about money and benefits, but lay the groundwork first.”
The manual even suggests one slogan that it claims has worked for other locals: “It’s not about dollars and cents; it’s about our children.”

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 4:44pmWisconsin must have the same manual, the progressive view is alive and well in Wisconsin classrooms. If a student expresses a different view, they are chastised in the classroom. Complain about it and your student gets an “F.” Take it to the administration, and you’re told that the teacher has been talked to about discussing personal beliefs, and nothing is done. Truth…..

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 4:50pmWhy do we continue to allow this and not make our voices heard? Is it the best we can do to voice our opinions on a blog where it matters not to anyone authority in any of these crazy places?
Stand up! Write the governments of these states and the school boards in them telling them how crazy this crap is and why you refuse to travel to their state and spend your hard-earned dollars there. EMail companies located within those states the same and how they are losing your dollars of support on their products due to the crazy crap going on in the state they are headquartered. Write your congress people and express your displeasure. Let them know you will mobilize and do everything in your power to ensure they do NOT get voted back in come their election time unless they seriously attempt to get this crap changed.
There IS power in numbers and these things will work if everyone jumps in and participates. Our freedoms and liberty and common-sense values are far too precious to be too lazy to get involved! Run for your school boards, city, town, county offices. Get some decency and common-sense into places of power and start changing our country back to what it is supposed to be! DO NOT STOP! If you don’t, these crazy leftists will eat us all for lunch!

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 5:05pmIt’s called the Delphi Technique……most professors and teachers are sent to conferences to learn this technique……it’s known as [non-critical thinking], keep the students inside the box thinking…most of America’s teachers today are Liberal Arts studies graduates……cookie cutter teachers, all inside the box thinkers, no critical thinking skills whatsoever, while the rest of the world is thinking outside the box…kind of like Steve Jobs did, but then he was never brainwashed by a University professor……The Delphi Technique gets the student into the habit of only asking questions that the professor/teacher feels comfortable in answering…..e.g., his own questions…..if a student goes off the plantation, they are attacked and humiliated. Most kids would not choose to be the laughingstock of the class. Therefore, the Delphi Technique is working. Saul Alinsky (Obama and Hillary too) would be proud!

Wait just a minute–does The Blaze really suggest that in arguing for greater quality in the classroom, teacher have to refrain from mentioning children at all? That is just stupid. This article is incredibly misleading–all of you should demand better, less manipulative reporting.
And by the way, all you strict Constitutionalists–aren’t you upset that it is illegal to strike in Michigan? That’s a violation of the right to free speech, which is incorporated by the 14 amendment.

Report Post »i am a mathematics and science teacher…i routinely jest with my students…make fun of them if you will…but it is all in good fun…i try not to be mean about it but it comes off as sarcastic at times…
the students hate being ask to validate any thought they have….it is all plug and chug type of mentality…even in other subjects where they have to write…simply respond to the question asked by the teacher…
i hate it…
i love the Socratic Method much better…i routinely ask them Why? even if they give me the right answer to a question. I try to avoid “black or white” questioning but leave open ended answers where they have multiple choices and have to provide justification. I encourage my students to ask about anything on topic…some use it to be silly and stupid but that is because they want the plug and chug they have been trained with.
It has caused me some problems…I taught in 6 schools in 13 years in teaching. Only two of the moves were of my own accord, the first from Private to Public…doubled my salary…the next from CA to TX…I felt I had to stand where God wanted me and was calling me to be, so I took Glenn’s advice, prayed, and got here as fast as I could.
After 6 months in TX…students still behave the same…just a little more aware of adults and their language…but hey..at least I got my wife to finally let me have guns in the house…finally…and she is on board with learning how to use them…sweet.

I don’t know how you would do it, but for starters, I would rely on an intense interview, a thorough check on their resume, and or education background.
Then I would trust my gut feelings.
Finally, and most importantly if my gut steered me wrong, would be my absolute right to kick their worthless a$$ out the door when, and if it becomes apparent that they can not think their way out of a paper bag.

It’s now the second semester in Tennessee, which means the teachers start training the kids to take the TCAPS (standardized tests). They train (not teach) these kids for months before the test, then stop teaching after it’s over, even though there are weeks to go until the end of the school year.
One intermediate school in the eastern part of the state has started making the 4th graders go to different classes for math. Why? Some of the students aren’t performing as well as they should, so they all get to travel to the various classrooms, hopefully learning enough from the better teachers before the test. This is for the children, right? We know they’re not just trying to protect the bad teachers, right?
