Revealed: The First Pictures of the Model Who Lost Her Eye, Hand in Propeller Accident

It’ been about a month-and-a-half since the young, beautiful model Lauren Scrugs lost her left eye and left hand when she walked into a plane propeller after looking at Christmas lights. And now, the first pictures of her have been released.

The media company Double Vision Media snapped the photos of the 23-year-old as she was leaving the hospital with her parents on Tuesday. Both TMZ and The Daily Mail have the picture, with the Daily Mail including several others. Here’s the photo making the rounds on both sites:

New Pictures of Model Lauren Scruggs From Propeller Accident

Nick Stern/Double Vision Media

The patch over her left eye is clearly visible, and her left arm is tucked within her hoodie.

TMZ has more on the aftermath of the accident:

According to a federal report just released, the pilot of the plane claims he attempted to warn Scruggs about the propeller and guide her to safety. When he thought she was out of harm’s way he returned to his seat, only to then hear someone scream, “Stop, Stop.”

From experience—I can tell you that a prop airplane is dangerous. You can not “see” the propeller that well because of the speed–you feel the air……she probably turned fast and felt it and put her hand up—too late. Yes, it can happen to people who do not know prop airplanes—so, guys, put your jokes aside, this is a sad thing. Thank heavens she didn’t walk into it any faster…..she would be dead.
My sympathy and prayers for Lauran and her family.

If anyone has ever ridden in one of these small puddle jumper planes, it is scary enough on board to feel the plane buffeted by every puff of air. And, as this girl found out, the hazards don’t end when you exit.

If you have ever been in the Air Force working on the flight line AT NIGHT or worse, a NON flight line AF member forced to do additional duty unloading luggage for big wigs who flew in on this type of plane and have to unload the luggage in a DARK, freezing cold and horribly windy night, people walked into the wings banging their heads all the time despite being warned to keep heads down. . I can see this horrible accident happening to anyone – even this poor girl because it is easily done. My sympathies go out this young girl and her family. God bless them.

Yes it is sad for all parties involved. It would only be sadder if she had died. I do think she comes from a good family and that God has big plans for her. I have several family members that have had amputations and it doesn’t make life any easier. I haven’t read what any of the nitwits are writing but instead of your little smart remarks, why don’t you lend a hand and help someone else.

Don’t forget that this incident happened at night, and she probably had some sort of hearing plugs in here ears to make things worse.

Yes, the pilot may have been better off not letting the engine run with an exiting passenger, but everyone should have exercised some deeper common sense when operating around running aircraft.

I‘m glad she’ll be ok. I bet she even learns to fly eventually.

I flew small planes (Cessna 152, 172 and Cherokee 140′s) and I hate to say this, but the first thing you do before anyone boards or exits is turn the plane off unless they are a pilot as well. I don’t know the entire story but this is kind of a “no brainer”. Why was the prop running while walking in front of the plane in the first place? Also, a prop is quite loud (scary as well) and to “not notice it”, I am sorry I find that very hard to believe. Glad she is alive though.

This young women made a mistake. She assumed the risk when getting on the plane. If she was that incompetent she should have waited for further assistance. Further more she was instructed on what to do upon getting off the plane. She clearly did not do as instructed. She now has to deal with the consequences. Am I somehow going to feel sorry for her? @THEPOSTMAN

LMAO I thought the same EXACT thing when I read this. OMG.

Anyway, I’m glad that she is doing better. Just goes to show you that anything can happen at any moment to completely change our lives. Prayers to her and her family that they will use this tragedy in their lives to become better and stronger and not let it make them bitter or drag them down. It is the goal for all of us. To use the hard lessons and hard times in our lives for our good and not let it win against us. I’m pulling for her.

I still have to wonder how she could have been out of it so bad, as to walk into that prop.Atempted suicide maybe?

No, it was not attempted suicide. It was an accident.

Now the Iranian executed in Houston, THAT has sinister connotations. It was blowback from us killing one of their nuclear scientists.

The props are barely visible while spinning and what you do see is distorted in regards to the depth perception. Walking into props was a fairly common incident in the military before the jet age. With her father being a pilot she is more than likely very comfortable around aircraft on the ground and running. Unfortunately she was too comfortable and possibly careless on this date.

      Well said rafter.
Depth perception, plus the difficulty in even seeing the props while they are spinning. And, she went for a ride to see Christmas lights.. so I’m guessing this was at night, making it even more difficult.

As a pilot (~150 hours), I don’t think the pilot should have let her out of the plane with the engine running. I was taught to open the window or door and yell ‘clear’ and wait for a possible response before cranking the engine.

Have you seen a picture of the plane or type of plane?
NBC/Today is still showing a turboprop plane propeller spinning when they report on this story. I still haven’t seen them show a picture of the actual plane type. It took a bit of searching to find the plane type a while back. It’s a high-wing tail dragger called a Aviat Husky A-1C-180. The pilot and passenger sit in-line rather than side by side.

I believe the plane shown ‘at The Daily Mail’ article is the wrong plane type.

Blowback, blowforward, who cares an Iranian terrorist is dead. Praise be to Allah. May many, many more of their scientists bite the nuclear dust. Better them than us.
I hope the young model has a very speedy complete recovery and is able to get on with her life, the same as our young men and women of the Armed Forces who have suffered disabling injuries from Iranian made IED’s.

@RAFTERC4 You have a good point. On the aircraft carrier I was on we had a man walk into a prop of a S2 when he walked onto the flight deck, he died.

I’ve seen injuries that would make a corpsman lose his lunch from the props on MODEL planes so I think that she is DAMN lucky to survive hitting a full size propeller. The guy whose brain I got to see in Navy safety videos during my training at Pensacola was not so lucky.

Sucks to have to suffer the loss of an eye and a hand, but she survived. That is a blessing in itself.
