‘Reverse Engineering’: Terror Investigators Seek Two Dozen More Packages

WASHINGTON (AP) — After intercepting two mail bombs addressed to Chicago-area synagogues, investigators are searching for two dozen more suspect packages that terrorists in Yemen attempted to smuggle onto aircraft in a brazen al-Qaida terror plot.

Authorities on three continents thwarted the attacks when they seized explosives on cargo planes in the United Arab Emirates and England on Friday. The plot sent tremors throughout the U.S., where after a frenzied day searching planes and parcel trucks for other explosives, officials temporarily banned all new cargo from Yemen.

Several U.S. officials said they were increasingly confident that al-Qaida’s Yemen branch, the group behind the failed Detroit airliner bombing last Christmas, was responsible.

President Barack Obama called the coordinated attacks a “credible terrorist threat.”

A Yemeni security official said the investigation involved about 26 suspected packages. Some had left Yemen and others were still in the country, he said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release information.

Authorities were questioning cargo workers at the airport as well as employees of the local shipping companies contracted to work with FedEx and UPS, the official said.

In Dubai, where one of the two bombs was found in a FedEx shipment from Yemen, police said it contained PETN, a powerful industrial explosive, and bore the hallmarks of al-Qaida.

The white powder explosives were discovered in the ink cartridge of a computer printer, said a police statement carried by the official state news agency WAM. The device was rigged to an electric circuit, and a mobile phone chip was hidden inside the printer, the statement said.

The police said the bomb was prepared in a “professional manner.”

Yemen promised to investigate the plot. The U.S. has FBI, military and intelligence officers stationed in the country to conduct an inquiry. There are only a handful of international shipping locations in the impoverished Arab nation, but U.S. officials worried that record keeping would be sparse and investigators would have to rely more on intelligence sources to identify the would-be bombers.

The other package was found at an airport in central England. Preliminary tests indicated the packages contained PETN, the same chemical as in the attempted Christmas attack, U.S. officials said.

In San’a, the capital of Yemen, there was no visible security presence Saturday at the UPS and FedEx offices, which are located on the same street.

An employee at the UPS office said they had been instructed not to receive any packages for delivery for the time being. He refused to be identified by name because he said he had been instructed by authorities not to talk to reporters.

Rep. Jane Harman, a California Democrat who serves on the Homeland Security Committee and was briefed by John Pistole, the administrator of the Transportation Security Administration, told The New York Times that both packages contained explosive-filled printer cartridges. One, she said, had a timer and the other was rigged to use a cell phone as a detonator.

No explosives were found on an Emirates Airlines passenger jet that was escorted down the coast to New York by American fighter jets.

“The forensic analysis is under way,” Obama’s counterterror chief John Brennan said. “Clearly from the initial observation, the initial analysis that was done, the materials that were found in the device that was uncovered was intended to do harm.”

While Obama didn‘t specifically accuse Yemen’s al-Qaida branch, Brennan called it the most active al-Qaida franchise and said anyone associated with the group was a subject of concern.

That would include the radical U.S.-born Muslim cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, who now is in hiding in Yemen. He has been linked in the Christmas attack and has inspired other terrorists with his violent message. Also hiding in Yemen is Samir Khan, an American who declared himself a traitor and helps produce al-Qaida propaganda.

The terrorist efforts “underscore the necessity of remaining vigilant against terrorism,” the president said.

The Homeland Security Department said it was stepping up airline security, but White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said Americans did not need to change their travel plans.

After a day of searches in Philadelphia, Newark, N.J., and New York City, no explosives were found inside the United States, though the investigation was continuing on at least one suspicious package late Friday night.

Intelligence officials were onto the suspected plot for days, officials said. The packages in England and Dubai were discovered after Saudi Arabian intelligence picked up information related to Yemen and passed it on to the U.S., two officials said.

Most of the officials spoke on condition of anonymity, citing the ongoing investigation.

U.S. intelligence officials warned last month that terrorists hoped to mail chemical and biological materials as part of an attack on the United States and other Western countries. The alert came in a Sept. 23 bulletin from the Homeland Security Department obtained by The Associated Press.

Since the failed Christmas bombing, Yemen has been a focus for U.S. counterterrorism officials. Before that attack, the U.S. regarded al-Qaida’s branch there as primarily a threat in the region, not to the United States.

The Yemen branch, known as al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, has since become a leading source of terrorist propaganda and recruiting. Authorities believe about 300 al-Qaida members operate in Yemen.

The Yemeni government has stepped up counterterrorism operations, with help from the U.S. military and intelligence officials.

    How could the plot be foiled if it was already on these flights ready to blow? Maybe blind luck of no phone reception was the reason, or cell phone turned off by itself because of low battery? You have reached Achmed….I am in Yemen and I cant come to the phone right now because it turned off in-flight and I couldnt detonate my bomb. Please leave your message at the booooom! insane “asylum I like’em”

    The lady that was arrested shoulda had “Lifelock” because the bomber used “Deathclock”. And, that failed to preserve his reputation. Now his bomb-exploding credit score has gone way down.

    The AP and CNN said there were no bombs, just toner carts. Rush L. says it would be a boost if it had been a stopped plot. An hour later the WH calls a press comf. and says it was bombs.

    This message if for the blaze who is ignoring the big story that there is a movement similar to the Tea Party going on across the globe. A movement to oppose Political and Militant Islam. A movement to take our countries from those who would threaten our freedom and our free speech and our very lives.

    It‘s springing up in the form of the Defense Leagues that have sprung up in every country across the globe that is now being threatened by the totalitarian political and militant ideology that they call Islam and it’s enforcer, brutal Sharia. It’s threatening our way of life and theirs! And it started with the EDL (English Defense League) in England. They have 40,000 facebook members now and they’re growing every day. They are fed up and they’ve had it, so they are taking their country back. Does that sound familiar? Of course they are doing it for a different reason. What’s the reason you say?

    Well, around a year ago, when they were having a homecoming parade for their returning soldiers who were coming back home from Iraq the Islamist’s were hurling insults at them and calling them killers and every name in the book, so they said we’re not going to take this anymore and they are taking a stand. They are standing up for English values. The values of honoring their English Armed Forces!

    Prior to that they had been dealing with all kinds of assaults on their way of life. For instance the Islamists were going around to the shops and asking them to stop selling pork, cigarettes and alcohol and they were telling the people to get rid of their dogs. In one instance, some Muslims were walking past a cafe where they were frying bacon and they complained to the authorities that they found the smell of bacon offensive so the cafe owners were ordered to get rid of the fan in their cafe. Their demands had become coercive because the Muslims had infiltrated the police department and they were threatening the people who wouldn’t comply by sending them threatening emails and whatnot. So, when this happened with their returning soldiers it was the straw on the camels back, so to speak.

    The EDL’s leader is Tommy Robinson. He’s a courageous man. Last weekend he travelled to Holland to show his support for Geert Wilders, another courageous man who is being demonized, who has been fighting to preserve his culture in Holland, which also has become overrun by the Islamists whose demands are getting more and more there as well. It‘s where Vincent Van Gogh’s grandnephew was stabbed to death multiple times in broad daylight and a fatwa was stabbed into his chest on Ayaan Hirsi and America for producing a documentary called Obsession. Van Gogh was brutally killed for making a documentary! For exercising his right to free speech!

    We in America need to be aware of these Defense Leagues that are sprouting up all over the world, including places like Indonesia and recently Turkey. Turkey is now going from a Secular State to an Islamic one, where a truck driver was executed just recently by several blackhooded Islamists who were standing behind him as he sat on the floor waiting to be executed. After they were done with their usual diatribe of Allahu Akbars one of the hooded barbarians stood beside the sitting man and shot him through the side of his head. After he was down they shot him two more times in the head.

    So you see, you guys are not covering this. You are missing the big story. The beginning of a grassroots movement across the world to fight back. Including here in America with the ADL. A movement to fight back on the infringement on Western Civilization by Militant and Political Islam and it’s assault on freedom and free speech wherever they go. A movement that is going to seek to put a ban on Sharia and a ban on the issuing of fatwas. In America, at our ADL facebook page, you will see that we are also going to make sure that Hamas-linked CAIR and ISNA is shut down and we are going to make sure that no more of the CAIR and ISNA people are going to infiltrate Congress and key committees because we think this Obama Administration is no longer looking out for we the people and we are sitting ducks waiting for the next attack.

    Anwar al Awlaki may be the first American on the CIA’s kill or capture list, but he was also a lunch guest of military brass at the Pentagon within months of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, Fox News reported Wednesday.

    Documents exclusively obtained by Fox News, including an FBI interview conducted after the Fort Hood shooting in November 2009, state that Awlaki was taken to the Pentagon as part of the military’s outreach to the Muslim community in the immediate aftermath of the attacks.

    The incident was flagged by a current Pentagon employee who came forward and told investigators she helped arrange the meeting after she saw Awlaki speak in Alexandria, Va.

    The employee “attended this talk and while she arrived late she recalls being impressed by this imam. He condemned al Qaeda and the terrorist attacks. During his talk he was ‘harassed’ by members of the audience and suffered it well,” reads one document.

    According to the documents, obtained as part of an ongoing investigation by “Fox News Reporting,” there was a push within the Defense Department to reach out to the Muslim community.

    “At that period in time, the secretary of the Army (redacted) was eager to have a presentation from a moderate Muslim.”

    In addition, Awlaki “was considered to be an ‘up and coming’ member of the Islamic community.

    After her vetting, Aulaqi [Awlaki] was invited to and attended a luncheon at the Pentagon in the secretary of the Army’s Office of Government Counsel.”

    I say to Al Qaida, how much bloodshed is enough bloodshed to satisfy your god Allah? The Bible tells us that death and hell are never satisfied.
    The book of James, written to the 12 tribes of Israel scattered among the nations (see James 1:1) gives us two kinds of wisdom. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. BUT THE WISDOM THAT COMES FROM HEAVEN is first of all PURE; then PEACE-LOVING, CONSIDERATE, SUBMISSIVE, FULL OF MERCY AND GOOD FRUIT, IMPARTIAL AND SINCERE. After Hagar became pregnant, she despised Sarai and so Sarai sent Hagar away. The angel of the Lord met Hagar near a spring in the desert and asked her where she was going, and then sent her back to her mistress. In verse 10 the angel of the Lord said to Hagar, “I will so increase YOUR DESCENDANTS that they will be TOO NUMEROUS TO COUNT (because Ishmael was a son of Abraham the friend of God). Then he also said in verse 11, You are now with child and you will have a son. You shall name him Ishmael, for the Lord has heard of your misery. He will be a wild donkey of a man; his hand will be against everyone and everyone’s hand against him, and he will live in hostility toward ALL his brothers.
    Now Hagar gave this name to the Lord who had spoken to her. She said, You are the God who sees me, and she also said, I have now seen the ONE who sees me. So she went back to Abraham and Saria and bore Ishmael. The important thing to note is that she KNEW THE GOD OF ABRAHAM, GOD ALMIGHTY, the God that Abraham worshiped, the Creator God of the universe; not a false god. After ISHMAEL was born, he was brought up to know God Almighty, the God of Abraham, as well. Abraham and Ishmael DID NOT WORSHIP false gods. They were a Shemitic/Semitic race.
    Many empires have come and gone, though they slaughtered people who opposed them, but what good did it do any of them? People grow again and rebuild their nations, and then another wave of marauders comes against them. It is a vicious cycle. Though nations came against the people of Israel, whether the Israelites lived in their own land or were scattered and dispersed in the world, God always came to rescue them, and He will again. Scripture tells us over and over again that God will NEVER forsake His people Israel, and that He will never lose sight of them. No one can wrench them out of God’s hand.     Wasn’t there extremist rhetoric about how Obama will fail because of his philosophy on the Jewish?

    Yet, there is still this olympic contest of “Back Bends”. So no. I don’t believe Obama was correct to say that we elected him only because his middle name was Hussein. Had that been the case, the will of the American people, and their good graces and prayers alone would have solved the Middle East conflict by now.     You Can’t Fix Stupid – but you Can Vote ‘Em Out !!!

    Our great country was founded by and for the citizens of the thirteen colonies. It was designed to insure that a central government was controlled and limited by representatives of those citizens. It was given a limited amount of power, with many checks and balances, to secure the rights and freedoms for its citizens. They were making sure that an American Government would and could not become as Britian had. England enacted laws and taxes on their American subjects, but without allowing the colonies a say in their government. Ignoring the will of the people of America, they bullied and took away what limited rights they had and tried to force them to comply. Sound familiar? Yes, we don’t have to look far across the Atlantic at a despotic leader, we have only to look at the Oval Office in Washington, D. C. and to those whom we had entrusted the liberties of the people and the country. Our representatives, Senate and the House, are there to represent the will of the people. Instead, they have consistently lied to their constituents, both during campaigns and when in office. They have consistently robbed the American people, not only of their money, but also by stealing their liberties, little by little. The incumbent office holders allow themselves to be above the law, they allow themselves to steal by back-room corrupt deals and the like. They ignore the very people who put them in office, they even resort to passing laws, under cover of darkness. They hide laws and corrupt deals in the midst of thousand of pages of laws. This has always been a trick of unethical lawyers. Their mindset is to bog down any opposition by inudating them with mountains of paperwork. Then, they laugh and call the people stupid and ignorant, or worse! No doubt, I could go on and on. Their lack of character, morals and ethics makes them unfit to be employed anywhere, let alone entrusted with the security, freedom, and economic growth of this great country. They have taken your freedom to worship, especially targeting Christianity. They have tried to rewrite the American history, to further their agendas, just like the Moslems continue to do with Israel.

    Soon after deciding what sort of Government America was to become, that very question was asked of Benjamin Franklin. In reply Franklin said, “A Republic….if we can keep it”. This is a question that should be upon the lips of all true American patriots. If we can’t or more correctly, if we won’t, then we don’t deserve it. The choice is up to us, the American people, and the answer should be and must be yes we will!

    You’re probably asking how do we insure that we will keep this nation a free Republic. Oh, we voted for only those who promised no more taxes, no more spending, etc., etc. Of course they all were proven to be liars again (or should I have said they were just not quite forthcoming or perhaps they were a little disingenuious?). Then we did the “best of the two evils” choice. This was no different than the “Magician’s Choice” trick! We now know that there is no difference between Republicans and the Democrats when it comes to which is telling the truth. Neither has the best interest of America at heart, probably not even in mind! Their goal is simply to acquire power, money, more power and more money while doing and saying anything to remain in office.

    So what is the answer? They don’t listen when the people, overwhelmingly, protest and tries to voice their opposition. So the American people need to get their UNDIVIDED attention. How? WE THE PEOPLE, must vote any and all incumbents out of office. It doesn’t matter if they are better than most. If they haven’t been part of the solution, then they are part of the problem. THEY MUST KNOW AND WE MUST LET THEM KNOW THAT GOVERNMENT WILL NO LONGER BE RUN BY ROUGUE LAWYERS AND OPPORTUNISTS, PROGRESSIVES (AKA SOCIALISTS), ETC. THEY ARE NOTHING MORE THAN MODERN-DAY CARPETBAGGERS OR WANNA-BE DICTATORS. THEY MUST BE EDUCATED TO THE FACT THAT THEY WILL BE VOTED OUT AGAIN AND AGAIN, UNTIL THEY LEARN THAT OUR REPRESENTATIVES ARE NO LONGER ABLE TO RUN THEIR OWN VERISON OF CRIME, INC.
    AND THOSE THAT ARE ELECTED TO OFFICE, BUT CONTINUE TO DO WHAT IS BEST FOR THEIR OWN BENEFIT WILL SOON LEARN THEY WILL HAVE ONLY ONE TERM IN OFFICE.

    We, the people, need to lobby our newly elected representatives to enact new laws to insure ALL our freedoms, our security, etc. Enact laws that ethical or criminal behavior of representatives will be prosecuted swiftly and severly, with no possibility of any pardon…not by a state Governor nor by a President! Enact laws or amendments to limit a President to one term only, ensuring that any damage to our country will not be as damaging as is obvious with this Government. Further limit the terms of our Representatives, both in the Senate and the House. Imperative to limit the term of all Supreme Court Justices to no more than an eight year term and make an amendment that the justices can no longer re-interpret the Constitution, but uphold the laws as it was written and intended by the original framers.

    So, the bottom line is this: unless the American people get the undivided attention of those in government…when you and your family members are homeless and hungry or at the very least jobless…remember, you have only yourselves to blame.

    THE ONLY WAY TO INSURE THAT YOUR FUTURE REPRESENTATIVES WILL LISTEN TO ITS CONSTITUENTS IS VOTE OUT ALL INCUMBENTS!!! FROM THAT POINT ON, EACH REPRESENTATIVE MUST KNOW WE WILL VOTE THEM OUT AGAIN AND AGAIN UNTIL WE HAVE RESPONSIBLE REPRESENTATIVES THAT UNDERSTAND THEY ARE THERE FOR THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE.

    I find it hard to trust these things, especially around election time.

    We can find these threats, but not Bin Laden, not 9/11, seal the border.
    We have scientists that claim global warming, can read your thoughts, and H1n1 but cant cure cancer, or anything else.

      Agreed, that at least the UAE and UK are watching and warning, our president and Napoletano are good at solving spin induced options that are all talk and worth the hot air they are based on.

      By the way, has anyone thought that Soros may be funding these kooks? Think on it, they destabalize the country with chaos and terror, he and the Progressives use them as enemies and swoop in to “Save the Country” in the great hour of need.

      I still can’t believe this president continues on the campaign trail instead of staying in Washington and dealing with the threats. But then that IS all he know how to do is to campaign. As far as national security he is “one scary dude”.

      With the above said, my mom said that it was on the news that one security person stated that this goes on all the time, it just never makes it to the news stations.

      STAY ALERT PEOPLE! While the newscasters and America are diverting their attention to this new “threat” NO ONE HAS THEIR ATTENTION ON THE REPORTS OF VOTER FRAUD ALL ACROSS THE COUNTRY. KEEP YOU EYES ON THE BALL.

      (There was a news story that the absentee ballots in Bucks County PA have been sequestered due to possibility of fraud.)

      The UAE are not our friends. Any Muslim country that is an “ally” of ours is looking out for its own economic and/or political interests. Bush had it right when he said, “You are either with us or you’re against us.” We need to threaten these countries with the sword if they do not help us fight terrorism. Unfortunately, the Kenyan-born usurper in the White House is not willing to do that.

      Obama is now burning books like the Nazis did.
