Evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins
Evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins continues to be a wildly popular voice among atheists. The famed scientist is using his name and clout to help nonbelievers around the world in their fight against the influence of religion in society.
In a new article by Daily News & Analysis, Dawkins is quoted as making some wild proclamations about the beliefs of various U.S. presidents (that a number — including Obama — have possibly been atheists), while delving into his ideas about how the education system can be used to strip religion out of society. His statements were apparently made at the Jaipur Lit Fest in India on Monday, where, among other subjects, he tackled his belief that education is key to defeating religion.
In order to understand the correlation the scientist sees between knowledge and belief in a higher power, one must first delve into his views on children’s learning. For Dawkins, education is the only “antidote” that can help stave off religion. What he essentially believes is that kids are being indoctrinated into believing in a higher power.
“We need to protect children from being indoctrinated. It goes on to the next generation and then they see that their children get indoctrinated,” he said. “Children are getting educated into the religion of their parents. We shouldn’t just assume that a child of a Christian becomes a Christian.”
But his qualms with religion go far beyond these statements. Dawkins believes that kids are taught that they do not need any evidence to believe in something when they embrace faith and religion. This, he said, “paves the way for the minority to become extremists.”
This is likely one reason why Darkins wrote the children’s book, “The Magic of Reality: How We Know What’s Really True,” which is focused upon delving into some of the world’s greatest wonders. Dawkins, of course, couldn’t help but include what he calls ”the Judeo-Christian myth,” as he apparently seeks to pass his atheism on to young readers. This, too, many would call a form of indoctrination.
Below, watch him describe the book:
Dawkins also contends that atheism is on the rise. In America, this is certainly the trend, although the proportion of non-believers is still relatively small, as 16 percent of the country counts itself as “unaffiliated.” It is increased education, though, that he believes will drive up this proportion.
“There seems to be a correlation with education. It’s certainly true within the US — the more educated people are more likely to give up religion,” Dawkins said.
While this notion is a commonly held belief — that the more educated one is, the more likely he or she will be to give up or simply not believe in religion — a recent study we reported on shows very different results. In fact, in this particular examination, it was working-class Americans who were more likely to leave their faith behind. Last August, we reported:
A new study released by the American Sociological Association has found that Americans who have only a high school diploma are dropping out of church faster than those who are more educated. According to LiveScience.com, in the 1970s, half of white Americans with a high school diploma attended church services at least monthly. Now, this proportion has dropped to just 37 percent.
Here’s the irony: 46 percent of Highly-educated, white Americans attend church now. In the end, among non-educated Americans there has been a 13 to 15 percent drop in attendance, compared to only a five percent drop among the highly educated.
This seems to challenge the contention that the more educated you are, the more likely you are to abandon or simply not embrace religion.
Here’s another study that found something similar.
Where Dawkins goes next in the DNA article is intriguing, as he claims that Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama were potentially nonbelievers. Of course, he uses their intellect as a basis for his theory.
“I think Lincoln, Kennedy, Clinton, Obama may well be an atheist,” he said. “Obama’s a very intelligent man. He probably is an atheist.”
The Times of India quoted him as saying:
“I suspect we have already seen several atheist US presidents, they just didn’t admit it. I suspect Lincoln was an atheist, probably so was Kennedy. Obama is an intelligent man, so I wouldn‘t be surprised if he’s a closet atheist.”
Watch Dawkins in a past video interview showering praise upon Obama below:
Dawkins went on to say that, with 535 members in the U.S. Congress, “It’s inconceivable that only one of them is an atheist. There’s got to be at least 50% of them.”
The one individual he’s referring to here — the only declared atheist in Congress — is Rep. Pete Stark (D-CA).
These statements come after the famed atheist also said late last year that Jesus Christ would have been an atheist too. Dawkins has also been active in the formation of a support group for former clergy members who are now nonbelievers.

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 12:42pmThink the president is an ardent believer in ‘social justice” – that the government is the distributor of goods and justice . And that he and the government ” knows best.” Maybe that’s where the arrogance of the Left enters the picture as they always act t;like they are the smartest guys in the room . They generally look down their noses at people who believe in God and the Bible. A weird mix of love and hate when you decide that you/ government gets to reward the poor and to punish the rich by “redistributing” stuff because Big Daddy Government knows best. A new form of old Marxism wrapped in a flag of justice. Not sure how God fits into these beliefs but don’t think the Lefties think God is nearly as smart as they are !

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 1:19pm“The Atheist Paradox is the logical impossibility of proving that a greater being does not exist.
It is similar to the logical impossibility of proving that mathematics is free of errors. Godel proved that we can never know if mathematics is consistent, or error-free.
A greater being could reveal himself to some but not others. The most an atheist could ever say is that he has not yet become aware of a greater being. That begs the question of whether the atheist is still looking, or has given up.
Many atheists are in fact anti-Christians who find it more advantageous to preach as an atheist than as anti-Christian. Those who censor prayers by children, as in classrooms, are engaging in anti-Christian activities. An atheist would be unconcerned with loving prayers that he simply did not believe in. “

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 2:14pmAnother example of an academic making claims that he‘s always assumed are true but hasn’t actually researched and, in fact, aren’t true. Regardless, I really don’t care what he believes. He’s making a claim to support his position with only anecdotal evidence. Not worth listening to…. much like 2012OBAMA2012.
If you want to make claims, provide examples. You can certainly find examples where the Republicans voted for legislation that limited freedoms, grew government, etc. I mean, seriously, as a whole they’re better than the democrats on these issues but they are far from principled. Were you to lazy to do a little research or did you just want to vent off some steam?
Either way we really need a way to “ignore” some posters and “prefer” others. There are several posters I really don’t want to read ever again. I’m also not interested in seeing posts by people with little to no posting histories…. and there are others I do like to read because they’ve earned a measure of respect from me. A little java script and a small header inserted into each post by the server would handle this nicely and let people set their own viewing options, ignore lists, etc…

Just look at the way he ligislates, and know he does not believe in God. democrats have a goal of replacing parents and God, thus the nanny state. They lean to the left, keep going left, and you run right smack dab into communism. What is the first thing you get rid of when you start or begin a communist nation? They alwasy get rid of people owning guns and bibles. how easy is it to get a Bible in China?
You can not believe in Bible truth and support abortion, large scale welfare, socialism…..and all the other ideals that make the democrats what they are today. Pelosi, Reid, Obama, Clinton…. the whole lot is anti God, and anti Christian. You cannot spend 20 years in the midst of Jerry Wright and call yourself a Christian. Obama’s shows of “faith” usually manifest after prolonged and high profile cycles of criticisms that question his faith. Like walking to church in the fashion of Jews walking to temple and making sure he’s photographed. You cannot make statements like “punished with a child” and “abortions help fullfil dreams” and be of faith.

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 4:07pmOh Dickie Dwakins — there was once a time when you only made me laugh watching you attempt to pass off your logically incoherent arguments as philosophy or even sound science, but now you simply have become a joke yourself.
Outside of his insignificant little cult of personality, does the man have any shred of reputation left?
Is this how desperate it’s gotten for him? Randomly claiming that historical and/or political figures are/were atheists because of their assumed high intelligence? This means that Dawkins is now roughly operating on the level of Internet atheist trolls who consistently lay claim that any historical figure who ever spoke a single critical word about religion. I’ve even seen them attempt to argue the atheism of Washington and Adams, both of whom were provably religious.
What’s next? claiming that Isaac Newton, John Locke, Francis Collins, and CS Lewis were/are atheists as well? Their high intelligence is without question, after all.
While I appreciate that the man is chasing his dream of being a stand-up comedian, I think Dawkins should leave the comedy to others and get back to what he’s really good at — running away from William Lane Craig.

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 4:11pmRight, the Bible was all about people living their lives as they see fit. Right. You might actually read the Bible before you speak.
God demands, through scripture, certain behavior. For example, gay behavior has no favor in the Bible. Yet the Left demands we accept it. So people must choose; God’s way, or man’s way. You chose the Left and man’s way. Others choose God’s.
Are some on the Right whacko. Sure. But the Left has “left” the Bible and God’s laws long ago. Time to reap what has been sown. And boy is coming in spades.

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 4:35pmI don’t believe that there is any logical proof for atheism: From my (limited) understanding of the functioning of the universe (i.e., what I learned through Chemistry, Biology, and Physics), it is obvious that the Universe is an EVENT.
This particular EVENT begins all physical (Matter, Kinetic Energy, etc.) and unphysical (TIME, Mind, Space [distance], Potential Energy, etc).
In fact, the universe is, obviously, an on-going Event: It is still happening. It is not something that can exist or not exist-i.e., a “random event.”
I don’t know of any physical, or non-physical, event not preceded by a previous event(s). Scientists can go back into time and space and determine exactly where, and when, the universe began: The “Big Bang.” Obviously, with the initial event of the universe, begins Time, Space and Matter.
But, as I already stated, “I don’t know of any physical, or non-physical, event that is not preceded by an event(s).” Therefore, logically, some event took place which initiated the Universe Event.
What could that Event be-or, better yet-What could that initiating Event be like?”
Since The Universe Event is both physical (matter, etc.) and non-physical (mind, time, etc.), and the two co-mingle apparently seamlessly, whatever caused the Universe Event must include matter, time, mind, etc.-in short, everything that is in our Universe Event-because no Event, that I know of, is spontaneous: Something that isn’t

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 5:14pmJust as an addendum to this Blaze article:
According to Pew, the 16% unaffiliated here in the United States (mentioned in the article) are not atheists, although folks at organizations like FFRF love to try and skew those numbers. Of that 16%, only 1.6% self-define as Atheist, 2.4 as Agnostic, and 6.3% as Secular Unaffiliated.
So depending on how generous your want to be with these numbers, the % of atheists/agnostics here in the U.S. is somewhere between 4-10%, at most 1 person per 10. Historical trends also show that those who list as “unaffiliated” are not necessarily non-theistic, and most will come to some type of religion as they get older.
While Billy Hallowell did a good job at disrupting the atheist = smartypants meme (used in honor of DIckieD), I really wish these % were used in a more accurate manner when it comes to articles such as this one, particularly with Dawkins making his ludicrous “50% atheist congress” claim.

Okay, chuckles…
Give me one… ONE area where the Dems’ platform is in line w/ the Bible, w/o trying to say Jesus’ individual mandate (the only one I will voluntarily comply with) to tithe (not give to the gov’t- giving to God, mind you)…
Let’s check them off!
-God: Thou Shalt not kill. Dems: Thou shalt not kill people convicted & sentenced by a jury of his peers as a murderer, but unborn children who have never hurt anyone? KILL ‘EM ALL!
-God on homosexuality: “Do not lie w/ a man as one lies w/ a woman” Lev 18:22
“Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex w/ men … will inherit the kingdom of God.” 1Cor 6:9-10 (abridged)
- Jesus on wealth: “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions & give to the poor, & you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” Mat. 19:21 Notice Jesus gave the man a choice to give up his riches, & he said give it *directly* to the poor. Not that the gov’t forces his wealth to be redistributed. God on wealth: “Thou shalt not covet.” Dems: “Those evil rich people make too much money & we should take it to give to the poor!”
-God: “I AM the Lord your God. You shall have no other Gods before me.” Dems: “If you want to pray, you‘d better not do it in a gov’t building b/c we’re a diverse nation of many gods.”
I could go on but it would be pointless. You clearly are lost & w/o a clue.
God bless you. I pray one day the wool be pull

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 6:54pm@EdCoil To say that there’s an “Athiest Paradox” as you describe it, is logically unsound. A person of faith simply makes the alternate claim of an atheist. There is no way to prove the existence of God, any more than there is a way to prove non-existence. There’s no way to “prove” anything. There’s only claims with evidence, and claims without evidence. An atheist simply claims there is evidence that a personal God does not exist. A theist claims there is evidence that a personal God does exist.

It may seem strange that any men should dare to ask a just God‘s assistance in wringing their bread from the sweat of other men’s faces; but let us judge not that we be not judged. The prayers of both could not be answered; that of neither has been answered fully. The Almighty has His own purposes. ‘Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!’ If we shall suppose that American Slavery is one of those offences which, in the providence of God, must needs come…”

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 12:34pmLOL – yet more laughable statements if it weren’t so tragic. This man is beyond foolish. The only thing I agree with is that we’ve probably had some atheistic presidents. So? What he leaves out are those that were very intelligent and are on the record as stating they were indeed ardent Christians AND lived lives that indicated they were and gave reasons why — like Washington, Adams, most of our Founders. (www.wallbuilders.com)
Report Post »Lincoln wrote that he was an agnostic I believe until the Battle of Gettysburg(?) when he became a true Believer. I guess you could say they were lying or something since no one knows one’s heart, but don’t think you can say with any credibility they were probably atheists.
Oh yes, and then there are the intelligent scientists who are Believers (book “Scientists Who Believe”).
Re indoctrination of religion – atheism/humanism/liberalism are religions and they are the ones being taught in our schools. And no – the more you research facts, history, the Bible can be proven to be true without reasonable doubt. And no, Christians don’t tell children you have to “believe” without proofs, just the opposite. Proofs are everywhere. People who remain atheists do so simply b/c they have chosen not to seek the Truth, don’t want to be “accountable” to a “God”.
I pray for him and all others to be “enlightened” before it’s too late………….

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 12:45pmI agree. Some good books to back up what you said are The Case for Christ by Lee Strobel. He was an atheist Yale law graduate who hated christians. He set out to disprove the Bible. On his journey, he realized that the Bible is true. He became a Christian.
Walt Brown, PhD frm MIT wrote Compelling Evidence for Creation and the Flood. He gives scientific proof of the creation and flood. He also writes the evolutionist theory so you can compare and decide.
Josh McDowell has a list of specific prophecy Jesus fulfilled.
There are many scientific and logical books written about the Bible. We don’t not blindly believe.
The Bible says to have a reason for why you believe.

People who believe they can do whatever the hell they want and apologize to some obtuse figure who will absolve them from any responsibility are truly pathetic. As a human I subscribe to the church of being a nice person, always trying to do the right thing, accept people for who they are, and apologize to the people who you actually have hurt, not to some mythical figure. In addition to the obvious scientific fallacies lies this sheer absurd belief that a child molesting murderer will go to heaven if he apologizes for what he has done, yet I will go to hell, despite dedicating my life to a career in medicine where I treat children with brain cancer, while being in a difficult marriage so my husband can protect our country? Please. I have sadly seen many kids pass away and God is never in that room, but in the rooms where kids are saved is not God, but a scientist who believes the existence of God is laughable at best. Ask my husband about God, he will let you know if God does exist, he apparently is to much of a ***** to be in the war in the middle east and when things get rough, you rely on your teammates and your training because that is what you can count on, “God” wants nothing to do with you then.

Welcome to your first day on the Blaze. Read your previous posts. It must have been a tough day for you.
You went from:
“when you see a 3 year old child battling a brain tumor the size of a baseball, it makes it hard to believe God actually exists.”
“thank god they believed in my dreams”
You sound conflicted.
But you did hit all the leftist agenda points on your first day defending gays, abortion, atheism and the newest agenda of mercy killings. You’ve had quite an busy day, seemingly, before and after going to your job of helping kids with terminable brain cancer. Why exactly are you on a conservative news and opinion site?
Oh and sorry…..but this one makes me think you’re creating you are a poser:
“I have unfortunately seen many people pass away, I practice neuro-oncology so it comes with the territory, but the people who are the most unhappy when they die are people who………believed some obtuse belief in god would save them.”
I know of far too many people who have died in Christ and their experiences immediately prior for this statement to be true. You are being disingenuous at best.
P.S. Do you consider “being a nice person” as calling others pathetic and weak? I guess that is relative considering abortion is perfectly acceptable to you.

from reading the comments in your post i think that you don’t think God is big enough for you ie: why doesn‘t he just swoop down and fix all of man’s problems? why do bad things happen to good people and good things happen to bad people? why is there suffering?
if you look at God through the prism of time i can see where people come up with “what in the world is God doing?” i can assure you he is in the hospital rooms, on the battlefield and yes he does forgive those who ask for forgiveness “not apologize, (true repentance)” but he knows their hearts so i will let him be the final arbitor on that matter.
if you look at God (omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient) through an eternal prism (as much as a person can reason eternity) then you see that suffering only last for a blink of an eye and for that matter the whole of time as we perceive it lasts for only a blink of an eye.
sin is the problem, it is the decay, it is the suffering, it is the fall of man. sin has always been paid for by the shedding of blood, whether it is mans inhumanity to man or it is the work of Jesus Christ on the Cross, one leads to ruin, one leads to eternal life.
darkness does not exist in and of itself, it is just a word that man has given to describe the absence of light. i cannot flip the dark on i can only turn the light off.

While trying to stay awake so I do not miss skype with my husband overseas, I decided I had to comment. Usually I just read the articles and some of the comments and feel an instant need to cleanse my body of any residual racism, ignorance, sexism, or hate that may have rubbed off. Then go in search for conservatives who believe in freedom, like actual freedom, fiscally and socially. As far as my statement regarding people who pass away in reference to their belief in God, I stand by it 100%. Its a pattern I have seen, on a daily basis, as well as other Physicians I know who treat terminal patients. The sad truth is even while people are in the midst of dying they feel a need to comfort the ones they love, and family and friends feel a need to feel like they are at peace with it. Usually, its not genuine of the real feelings of that person, the conversations they have with their family and friends is often times at complete odds as to what they are telling their DR. Its not some theory I have, I witness it every day. In response to the weak comments, I made those to people who were attacking others based on sexual preference etc. People being cruel to others who they think are different are weak. My husband fought for his gay brother’s rights in the military, that is a man.

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 7:30pmI am currently watching a video series on on the Christian Inquisition. For more than 600 years, good, pious Christians tortured, interrogated and burned people alive as a way of bringing Europeans into the gentle hands of an intolerant Christ church. Sure, in those days Christian hands became blood-stained and a bit burned, but they happily spread terror and tragedy in the Lord’s name. Back then, Christians thought they were saving sordid souls for the Pope and Rome so the Christian Church would use any method, commit any barbarism and call it Jesus. No, Christians have been horrific in the past and the only reason people like Dr. Dawkins aren‘t being publicly beaten and burned at the stake today is modern day Christians don’t have the power they had in the past to commit mass murder for their squalid beliefs. Absolutely true. “Question everything” is an attitude everyone ought to adopt. Of course if the interpretation of God a person might subscribe to (take your pick of the thousands of gods and millions of interpretations as the “right” answer) includes the caveat that doubt and investigation are a sign of the devil or a general prerequisite for the express train to hell, then you arrive at faith without evidence even quicker. Faith through fear and/or tradition certainly, but not faith through rigorous examination.
The uneducated are poor. I’d argue that the poor have much less reason to have faith, so the larger drop doesn’t surprise me. I can’t help but laugh that “more educated people are dropping out, but not as quickly” is portrayed as if that’s a pro-faith statistic.
As someone who is educated (formally and informally), my life has been easier. More money, less problems despite the phrase; the religious see less problems = more “blessings.” My life is great, but I rather doubt that God is so interested in my happiness that the billions in poverty and other misery must be just less interesting to the God. If the Almighty refuses to protect the innocent and those who believe, can we be surprised that those who especially experience that lack of protection – the uneducated poor – are coming to grips with rea

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 5:01pm@LIBERTARIAN_ATHEIST — The well-thought response is appreciated, but you have quite a few problems with your argument here. While “Question everything” sounds good on paper, but this is impractical and impossible. Does anyone seriously question the basic axiomatic logic behind 2+2 =4?
How often do we seriously question if we are who we think we are? Do we seriously question if the universe was created 15 seconds ago with the appearance of age?
There are certain properly basic beliefs that we take at face value everyday, otherwise we wouldn’t be able to have a productive existence. In both life and in school, ALL education is a form of indoctrination to varying degrees.
When it comes to moral or ethical truths, do we ask that our children (for example) question the immorality of cold-blooded murder? No. Indoctrination, I say!
Additionally, there are numerous studies showing that children tend to come to teleological explanations on their own, based simply on observation and logic. So if children naturally tend toward belief in a higher power, is embracing theism a greater or lesser example of indoctrination than atheism?
The problem with militant atheists is that they simply don’t like the somewhat-naturally and culturally occurring religious “indoctrination” that roughly 90% of the global population and at least 84% of the U.S. population participate in.
After all, it‘s only indoctrination if it’s not atheist approved.

Posted on January 24, 2012 at 12:16pmWhen your opinion is unpopular, and despite all of your efforts, cannot be proven empirically, the next step on this road is to try to convince people that the powerful, great, and the good, all secretly hold to your belief.
His next step will be to find all the villians he can, and try to convince people that they were deeply religious.
As SYCHINLEGACY remarked, this tends to be a weapon used by the insecure. I have seen it used by Christians that are insecure about their faith.
The problem for the Atheist is that as a Christian grows in his faith he becomes closer, and more secure with his Lord, and he see’s these tactics for what they are, lies and deception. They become unnecessary because of the powerful reality of God Almighty.
The athiest on the otherhand never grows, he is never comforted with the assurance of Truth. He has stopped wondering, stopped asking questions, because there is nothing there but emptiness. All he can do now is refine the old arguments, sharpen his knives of deception, but it will never be enoug.
It always leads to the same damn place. A desolate life, and a shattered, broken soul.

Man, are you in for a disappointment when you draw that last breath and wink out of existence. Just like before you were born. Enjoy your meaningless, misguided Life, it’s all there is.

If you are right then I have nothing to lose by taking the moral teaching of the Bible and God’s word to live my life. You can live your life by the teachings you dictate.
When I die and wink out of existence, I will have made a difference by living a decent life. However, if you are wrong and there is something after and that something is God and his judgement of how you used “His” gift of life to iimpact the world, I will let you worry about that situation.
Bottom line, The option is there. God has put out the Word and you can do with it what is right for you as can I and trying to eliminate God will not happen.
