Rick Perry Now Regrets ‘Heartless’ Immigration Comment During GOP Debate

Will Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s immigration policies harm his presidential prospects? As time progresses, it seems like more and more conservatives are finding themselves disenchanted with the presidential contender’s take on border security, immigration policy and the like.
Following controversial comments during the Fox News-Google debate, Perry is now apologetic. As you’ll recall, he originally said the following last week in response to conservatives who opposed helping the children of illegal immigrants:
“I don’t think you have a heart“ if ”you say that we should not educate children who come into our state for no other reason than that they’ve been brought there through no fault of their own.”
In an interview with Newsmax, though, he’s now singing a different tune:
“I was probably a bit over-passionate by using that word [heartless] and it was inappropriate. In Texas in 2001 we had 181 members of the legislature – only four voted against this piece of legislation – because it wasn’t about immigration it was about education.”
Watch these statements, below (around 5:28):
Perry continues to be critiqued over his immigration statements and policies. Last week, Arizona State Senate President Russell Pearce appeared on “Radio ALRA,” a show produced by the Arizona Latino Republican Association. During the dialogue, Pearce, who has become known for his staunch opinions on immigration, called Perry out. Watch below:
The infamous immigration enforcer told both the hosts and the audience that the Fox News-Google debate “outed” Perry on immigration. He continued, saying, “What’s really sad is when you reward lawbreakers — you encourage more lawbreaking.” Here, the state senate leader was referring to Perry’s stance on tuition assistance to the children of illegal immigrants.
Perry, of course, supported and signed a controversial Texas law that provides in-state tuition for children of illegal immigrants — a measure that is drawing negative attention in many conservative circles.
Also, a point that Pearce brought up was Perry‘s opposition to Arizona’s controversial immigration law that was passed back in 2010 (SB1070). Pearce, who became well-known across the nation after he sponsored the legislation, highlighted Perry’s pledge to veto any similar bills in Texas. The media reported on this back in 2010:
Pearce also discussed Perry’s past negative opinions on a U.S. border fence. Below, watch Perry say, ”The idea that we’re going to build a wall is nonsense.”
If Perry can pass these views off as common sense, he will be successful in staving off further immigration criticism. But if public opinion drives the discussion (68 percent of Americans supported a border fence back in June 2010), he may find himself with an uphill battle.

The only office he held was governor for 4 years. His salary I heard was 1$/year. I believe he earned a total of $4 for serving as governor.
I completely agree with you on Perry. He was and I believe he still is a Democrat by evaluating his record while serving as a life long career politician.

The Texas Tea Party Caucus Advisory Board, a citizen group that advises the caucus’s 27 state legislators, will attack Perry for being insufficiently tough on so-called sanctuary cities at a press conference next week…

Posted on September 28, 2011 at 10:02pmI’ll give Perry credit for the only foriegn policy experience he has and experience with the real world. The good people here would deny a young person and education in Texas even though they’ve lived there their entire lives, even though they’ve outperformed a white person in school and were accepted to a Texas college. They could probably contribute to this country, more than some white guy who didn’t do so well in high school. That’s a merit based system.
But of course it’s not popular. You can’t get the TP vote unless you want to spend a few 100 billion searching out and deporting Mexicans and spending another couple of billion building, arming and maintaining a 30 foot wall between the US and Mexico. A wall, which is a fantasy, that will keep very few people out even if it were built. Besides, US businesses along the border wouldn’t allow it: they get too much cheap labor from Mexico.

TIME FOR A REAL LEADER!
The window for Allen West to jump into the race is closing soon. However, after watching the lackluster display of the GOP Presidential Candidate debates, we are not ready to give up on our efforts to persuade Allen West to jump into the race.
Now is the time to put in one big effort: call his offices, post on his Facebook page, send faxes, write letters to Allen West to let him know that you are not satisfied with the current selection of candidates, that none possess the knowledge, intelligence or leadership skills that he embodies, and that our country desparately needs in our next President.
None of the candidates have won the confidence of the people of this country. We need the conviction, values, and inner strength of a true leader. Allen West talks frequently of the qualities required for a leader of this country. Remind him that he is describing himself!

Compare this Romney, who hired a bunch of Bushes economic advisers, thought that Romney care would reduce health care costs for people in Massachusetts, and says that Social Security is an “essential safety net”. Please Mr. Perry, don’t backtrack and try to explain this away. Now all us voters paying attention know fully what your feelings are, no need to apologize at all.
Cain/West – 2012.

Posted on September 28, 2011 at 5:59pmThere is no perfect candidate. He realized that what he said needed to be further explained. I take him at his word. He is right when he says building a fence is not the answer because it isn’t. It certainly helps but the only thing to stop them from crossing the border is boots on the ground. Serious boots on the ground. Once that is done many of the other problems will go away. Good for him and so I hope he gets back on track because I think he does understand the enormous problems and has the leadership to step up to the plate and get this country turned back around.

Posted on September 28, 2011 at 5:54pmBut, but, but…. what I mean’t to say was… lemme’ explain. Lol. Like the ump said… 3 STRIKES… YER OUT!
Perry and some others just don’t get… most Americans don’t want illegals here for any reason… woman, man OR child. Plain and simple. Don‘t let ’em in, and the ones that ARE here… start sending them a packin’.

Posted on September 28, 2011 at 6:23pmWe try to hard to seem/act compassionate when in fact we are probably the most compassionate country in the world anyways… always have been. We really need to start being A-Holes for our own good. Sometimes even compassion can go a bit too far like many other things…

Posted on September 28, 2011 at 6:22pmWhat I’m loving is all the people here on the Blaze and elsewhere getting behind Herman Cain. Over the past few days, I hear people calling talk radio, on YouTube and everywhere lauding Cain. The media is going to try to hang onto Romney and Perry but we can overcome that if we just keep at it. They’re still using the term, “front-runners” but the front-runner is whoever the people want it to be.

Posted on September 28, 2011 at 5:52pmI’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. Perry was a beneficiary of a lot of good Texas laws and policy before he ever came on the scene. He has far too many strikes against him
1) He was a Democrat in Texas before he switched parties. That is just wrong on so many levels.
2) He pushed mandatory HPV while he was receiving political favors. While the contribution may be relatively minor, it was absolutely wrong.
3) He’s not even as slick as Clinton.
Go away, Perry. This country needs a leader and it isn’t you.

Posted on September 28, 2011 at 5:47pmSeriously? There is never going to be a perfect candidate. That’s why there are so many candidates up there at the debates, because so many on the right are trying to find the perfect candidate.

Posted on September 28, 2011 at 5:54pmTake it a step further. Debates are not enough. Find out who the candidates really represent. What have they done, what positions have they held. Dig deep people. Don’t let the media tell you who to vote for.

Posted on September 28, 2011 at 6:34pmTX, you’re right. And I have done so. It seems to me that the only consistant one is Ron Paul.

Posted on September 28, 2011 at 6:35pmTX_45_ACP,
I watched the debate and it wasn’t the media telling me anything I saw and heard Perry throw up all over himself for myself. There was no media distortions involved here. Thanks but no thanks but if I was from Texas I would be totally ashamed of this fraud. I know everything is bigger in Texas and that includes a bigger bulls#$ter and a very big RINO Governor.

Posted on September 28, 2011 at 10:18pmI’m not looking for perfect, just someone who makes sense, plain old common sense.
Report Post »Giving freebies to illegals then strapping the burden to the backs of working Americans to pay for it makes no sense. It’s enabling law breakers. We should be able to expect our representatives to uphold our laws at the very least.
I read the other day that “common sense is now a super power”. Could be.
