Rick Perry: Social Security ‘Is a Ponzi Scheme’ for Young People

While campaigning in Iowa over the weekend, Texas Governor Rick Perry shared his thoughts on Social Security, stating:
“It is a Ponzi scheme for these young people. The idea that they’re working and paying into Social Security today, that the current program is going to be there for them, is a lie,” Perry said. “It is a monstrous lie on this generation, and we can’t do that to them.”
These same sentiments about Social Security are mirrored in Perry’s book, “Fed Up.” The Wall Street Journal reports:
In his fiery anti-Washington book, “Fed Up!”, published last fall when he had no plans to run for president, Mr. Perry called the program, which turned 76 on Monday, “a crumbling monument to the failure of the New Deal.”
He suggested the program’s creation violated the Constitution. The program was put in place, “at the expense of respect for the Constitution and limited government,” he wrote, comparing the program to a “bad disease” that has continued to spread. Instead of “a retirement system that is no longer set up like an illegal Ponzi scheme,” he wrote, he would prefer a system that “will allow individuals to own and control their own retirement.”

Stop being stupid throwing votes away on candidates who don’t have the personality or the brains it takes to turn this country around! Paul OBVIOUSLY has autism! No world leader is going to work with him and everyone will laugh behind his back! He needs to retire! Perry is not very smart and has memorized a formula for getting people to give him a surface understanding of something and tell him what to do! He’s totally disloyal and a huge flirt! I don‘t EVER want to hear tea partiers talk about flip flopping when they support a former democrat who ran Gore’s campaign for president! Don’t care what year it was…that’s a MASSIVE DEAL BREAKER!! There’s NO EXPLANATION that could excuse those incredible mistakes in judgement! Wise up people!!! We are putting up with Gore’s crap today because of what Perry did putting Gore on the world stage!!! No Way!

Reagan was a conservative Democrat and back when he was a Democrat it was a conservative party. Rick Perry was a democrat when it had changed to far left. There is no excuse for him, he cannot be a true conservative as he was already an adult and in the Democrat party during the Reagan revolution. Al Gore was already a far left “ozone man” when Rick Perry supported him. The only reason Rick Perry switched parties is he seen more political opportunity becoming a Republican. It was totally about Rick Perry. His mandating the HPV vaccine is more than a mistake, it was worse than poor judgement. It was corruption in the worst form and a political payback to Merck. This guy is a corrupt as corrupt can be and if he is nominated say hello to Obama for another 4 years and you can take that to the bank.

As far as Ron Paul not even close to electable. Sarah Palin is a self serving opportunist who has sadly turned into a media whore who needs to save her golly geez for endorsing good conservative candidates. Bachmann not electable. Gingrich not electable. Rick Santorum I do like him but he couldn’t win an election in his own state. Herman Cain is electable but does not have the name recognition or resources to compete. That leaves Mitt Romney who is very electable and the only one the polls are showing can defeat Obama. The sooner we get behind him the better chance we have of defeating Obama.

My parents (life long democrats until this administration when they claim to be independents) have it right. they said that the republicans now are more like the democrats of their day and the democrats are FAR left. Social Security has helped many millions of disabled and elderly Americans survive with dignity since the 1930′s. It currently has 2.6 trillion dollars in the bank – enough to fully cover recipients for a couple of decades, after which, minor adjustments to the cap could offer full coverage forever. This is a ponzi scheme for Perry and his followers? I think he should look up the word in his dictionary.

Yea, Perry/Paul or better yet, Perry/Bachmann . They’ll run on a platform of ending Social Security, FEMA, Medicare/Medicaid, public education, unemployment benefits and the like. Then all the money saved will be given to the rich as tax cuts. That’s what I call, Transforming America. You know, that thing republicans have been accusing Obama of doing ever since he took office. Canada will be the new America.
Republicans want to take America back to the end of the 19th to beginning of the 20th century. That’s the sweet time period for republicans, were blacks, women and minorities knew their place and the children of immigrants worked in factories and industrialists were gods.
Obama won’t even have to attend any of the debates. He’ll just let them talk and hang themselves over and over.

I read the link you provided from p23 and soon thereafter I found this quote:
“Important omissions add to the image of America as enemy. According to the World Bank, by 2004 the US had given more than $1.3 billion to the PA and its NGOs (by now more than $1.5 billion), making the US the single largest supporter of Palestinians in the world. There is hardly a Palestinian infrastructure that has not benefited from US aid, including schools, hospitals, universities, water systems, road development, sports and more. Yet this US economic aid for the Palestinians was completely left out of the schoolbooks. By contrast, American financial aid to Israel is taught and is presented as an important indicator of alliance. The schoolbooks cite American economic aid to Israel as one example indicating that Israel is America’s “strategically.” [Contemporary Problems, grade 12, pp. 21-22] But as stated, there is not one reference to the monumental aid or the infrastructures that were built by the US.”
So basically they hate us despite the aid we give them so why would they leave us alone for any other reason? If Ron Paul wants to cut off foreign aid I say fine, but to ignore Iran getting a nuke, no way. I don’t make the mistake of judging my enemy by my own standards of life and justice. If we let them, they’ll eradicate western civilization in favor of Sharia law.

Rick Perry’s photo scares me. His face says a thousand words. It looks like he’s been many places, done many things and, has probably lots of closets full of t-shirts to prove it. I don’t know. I sense instability somewhere and, it really irks me. He asked if we Texans should tell everyone what we really think of Rick Perry. I’ve only been here for about 6 years, so Rick is all I’ve known as governor. I lost interest in him when he became a cheerleader for the Trans Texas Highway. I think he’s just as progressive of a Republican as George W. was. I like one other poster who said the difference between a Republican progressive and a Democrat Progressive is that Democrats want a one world order, and Republicans are more into national progressivism. The only way I would vote for Rick Perry is if he’s running against Obama.

Posted on August 29, 2011 at 10:07pmRick Perry is a shill for the Republican good-ole-bays. He is a Progressive and a wolf in sheep’s clothing. While Rick Perry has done some things correct for Texas, he is a big spender and he knows how to fool people with what he says. He may be better than Obama, who is driving our country into a socialist state. Bottom line: No matter who the Republicans put up against Obama, we ALL need to stand behind that candidate. We cannot have a split vote on a Republican candidate and an independent and expect to win the election against Obama. While our Social Security system needs massive overhaul, we MUST be willing to do with it as other countries have done. That is; we need to take the money that comes in and separate it from the government spending programs. re-invest that money in stocks or bonds or even Gold. The point is; that money MUST grow so that when its needed, not only the principal is there but also the growth money. Talk of privatization and other pie in the sky solutions are nice talk, but individuals do NOT have the capability to make the money grow like the weight of the government can. More money invested in many diverse ways makes for overall winners when it comes time to return the money to its rightful owners, the individuals. Bottom-line: We MUST get back to the Constitution. Term limits are the only way to assure we have a turn-over of people in government so that we are not stuck with Progressive candidates.

Do a bit of research on what happens with the SEC closes a ponzi scheme. When a ponzi scheme is folded, money (what is left, if any) is given to the first comers but prorated. Unfortunately, there is no money left in social security. It is just used a hidden tax for whatever they need it for. You may not like it that you are having your “money taken away”, but your anger and resentment is misplaced. Perry, in this case, was telling the truth about SS being a ponzi scheme. Your anger should be placed on those politicians who, not only created the system, but let it go on AND increased the tax.

Let people be responsible for themselves and their own retirement. People used to turn to family and church, and then government stepped in forcing me to provide for others when charity should be a choice.

Posted on August 29, 2011 at 9:42pmSICBOY, that article is nothing but a lame attempt to smear Perry. It portrays him as some evil big government politician using the system for personal gain, while the article doesn’t provide any actual evidence of fraud or corruption. Everything Perry did in the past as governor to earn money has been open to the public and within the law.
There aren’t any deep dark secrets about Perry like Libs would like you to believe. All they can do is dig up dirt (if you can call it dirt) on stuff he did in the private sector. That little thing about his wife becoming a nurse to earn extra money, come one really? That’s corruption? Or that bit about him boarding with other lawmakers in Austin so he could save money, how is that evil? If I were him I might do the same. Or him having positions on various different boards and getting paid for it, how is that wrong? He was invited to those groups and took part in them, so he got payed for his part. TELL ME WHATS WRONG WITH THAT??
This is just another example of liberals attacking the rich and capitalism. Everyone, even politicians, have the right to earn money and keep their wealth if they do it legally and openly. There’s nothing dirty or dishonest about that, he’s just being a part of the American capitalistic system. And quite frankly, after what he’s done for Texas, I’ say he deserves that money.

He hates Perry because of his Conservatism. Yes, California and New York got a shuttle. And NASA is based where? Houston TX. Also, do a little research on the wildfires that burned a good portion of Texas. Obama refused to declare TX a disaster area. Again, because Obama HATES Perry.
Perry and Paul are from TX. Both have similar ideas. The big difference is that Perry would not turn a blind eye to Iran and give them the green light to go nuclear.

Posted on August 30, 2011 at 1:08amRon Paul’s vote of YES on investigating Bush impeachment for lying about Iraq in 2008. First, Bush and his administration were very careful about their statements on affiliations between Iraq and Al Qaeda. Second, evidence supports these claims even if they were made as well as Iraq’s support of numerous other terrorist organizations. Denying this fact does not make it any less true. Third, information from intelligence agencies all over the world agreed with the threat that existed. Decisions were made based upon this intelligence, they were not lies. And lastly, this evidence was not something that was cooked up by “Neocons to start a war” as Ron Paul would say. The issue of Iraq has existed and been discussed for over 2 decades so the only reasonable explanation for such a vote would be if you believed in some type of 2 decade long conspiracy. So does Ron Paul really believe that or did he just make another dangerous politically motivated vote. I will let you decide on that one.

Posted on August 29, 2011 at 8:33pmSocial Security has been a ponzi scheme for everyone; not just the young. Bernie Madoff is in jail for playing the same game in the private sector. For Perry to say this to the young people is just an attempt to get them on board with his campaign. He would never say this to the millions of baby boomers that are just now getting their Social Security benefits. In the 1950′s there were 9 workers paying for the benefits of the beneficiaries now their are less than 3. Hate to tell you Rick the people in their late 40‘s and early 50’s are the ones who are going to get screwed the most. People like me who have been working since they were 15 and paying will get nothing. If people paying into Social Security have paid their way then how can we be at deficit spending in 2015? Not only has the government been raiding the SSI funds people have not been paying adequate amounts into the fund for many reasons.
So Mr Perry are you going to propose that SS taxes increase and age requirements are extended into the future so that people are not relying on SSI for 15+ years, far beyond the original intent of the entire progarm? Some how I doubt you are going to propose any real reforms to the system because there are too many advanced baby boomers who are the largest voting block. Just like a typical politician… promise something for nothing.

Posted on August 29, 2011 at 8:12pmPerry is absolutely right. A Ponzi scheme is an investment swindle in which early investors are paid off with money put up by later ones. The whole thing collapses when the “later ones” want theirs, and nothing is left to pay them with. That’s where we are now. The only thing left in the “trust fund” are IOU’s from the Treasury. Congress (both parties) took the cash and spent it. Guess who gets to pay the IOU”s? We do. We get to replace our own money. With interest. In 2010, we reached the point where the system is paying out more in benefits than it takes in in taxes. No question, it’s a Ponzi scheme. Now what do we do about it?
